Long lines of cars filled the road while angry drivers pressed their horns endlessly under the hot weather.
Inside one crowded BRT bus, tired workers sat quietly with sweaty faces while some people argued loudly near the entrance. Lola Daniel sat close to the window holding her handbag tightly on her lap. Her cream-colored office shirt was slightly rough from the stressful day she had at work, and her low heels were already hurting her legs badly.
But the pain in her heart was far worse than the pain in her body. At 29 years old, Lola was beautiful, educated, hard-working, and respected in her office. Yet, none of those things seemed important to her family anymore because, according to them, a woman without a husband was incomplete. Lola rested her head gently against the bus window and closed her eyes for a moment, hoping to enjoy small peace after the stressful day.
But, suddenly, her phone vibrated inside her handbag. She slowly brought it out and checked the message. The message was from her auntie, Auntie Shade. Please, don’t come alone this time. People are already asking questions. Lola stared at the message quietly without replying. Before she could even lock the phone, another message entered immediately.
This one was from one of her cousins, Kemi. Your younger sister is marrying before you. This life no balance, oh. A third message entered almost immediately again. At this rate, your younger cousins will soon marry before you. Some people inside the bus laughed loudly over a funny video one passenger was watching.
But, to Lola, it felt like the whole world was laughing at her. She swallowed hard and looked outside the bus window as tears slowly gathered in her eyes. Her younger sister, Jasmine Daniels, was getting married in Benin in just a few weeks. And instead of happiness, the wedding preparations had become another painful reminder that Lola was still unmarried.
Every phone call from home now felt like punishment. Every family group chat became another opportunity for mockery. Lola was tired, very tired. She was tired of pretending she did not care whenever aunties asked her when she wanted to settle down. She was tired of hearing people say her standards were too high.
She was tired of acting strong while secretly crying herself to sleep at night. By the time the bus finally stopped near her area in Surulere, darkness had already started covering the city. Lola slowly stepped down from the bus with tired eyes and crossed the road carefully before entering the small supermarket near her apartment building to buy bread and noodles for dinner.
Even there, she still could not escape marriage discussions. Two women standing near the cashier were gossiping loudly about another woman in the neighborhood who recently got divorced. “Career women always have attitude.” One woman said loudly. “That’s why many of them cannot keep a husband.” The women laughed while Lola quietly paid her things and left the supermarket without saying a word.
When she finally reached her office apartment upstairs earlier the next morning, the stress continued again. Lola worked as an executive secretary at Johnson Holdings, one of the biggest companies in Lagos owned by billionaire businessman Chief Richard Johnson. Everybody respected Lola because she was intelligent and hardworking, but some people secretly mocked her behind her back because she was still single.
Around lunchtime that day, Lola walked toward the restroom after finishing an important meeting for her boss when she suddenly overheard two female colleagues gossiping near the corridor. One of them was Vanessa Cole, a stylish woman who always acted superior around other workers. “See Lola.
” Vanessa said mockingly while fixing her lipstick. “Beautiful woman, good job, good salary, yet no husband. Something must be wrong somewhere.” The other woman laughed immediately. “Maybe she’s too proud. Men don’t like women that act too independent.” Vanessa nodded proudly. “Successful single women usually have bad character. Normal men don’t avoid good women for no reason.
” The women laughed together while Lola stood quietly behind the wall holding some files tightly against her chest. Her eyes became watery immediately, but she quickly forced herself to walk away before they could notice her. Throughout the rest of the day, Lola pretended everything was fine. She smiled professionally during meetings, answered office calls politely, and typed documents calmly.
But inside her chest, she felt broken little by little. When closing hour finally came, Lola returned home emotionally exhausted. The moment she entered her apartment, she removed her shoes carelessly and dropped her handbag on the couch before sitting down heavily. The silence inside the apartment suddenly made the loneliness worse.
Lola looked around the quiet room and slowly covered her face with both hands as tears finally rushed out uncontrollably. She cried deeply and painfully like somebody who had been holding sadness inside for too long. Suddenly, loud knocking interrupted her crying. Lola, open this door before I break it.
It was Mebal Okafor, her best friend and neighbor. Lola quickly wiped her tears before opening the door. Mebal entered immediately carrying nylon bags of suya and soft drinks. Mebal was loud, funny, dramatic, and impossible to ignore. The moment she entered and saw Lola’s swollen eyes, she dropped the nylon immediately.
Who died? She asked dramatically. Lola forced a weak smile and said, my dignity. Mebal sat down quickly beside her. What happened again? Lola slowly explained everything. The messages from family members, the gossip at work, the pressure from her mother, the shame she constantly felt whenever married discussion started. As she talked, her voice broke repeatedly until tears filled her eyes again.
I’m tired, Mebal. She whispered painfully. Everybody talks like my life has no meaning because no man married me. Mebal looked at her quietly for some seconds before suddenly speaking. Then, hire one. Lola stared sharply. What? Mebal shrugged casually. Hire husband for the wedding. Fine boy, small acting, everybody will rest themselves.
Lola stood up immediately in anger. Are you insane? She snapped angrily. What rubbish idea is that? But Mebal only laughed harder and she continued eating suya comfortably. Okay, oh. Continue crying every night then. Lola hissed angrily and entered her bedroom. But later that night, another painful phone call entered from her mother, Mrs. Helen Daniels.
Her voice sounded tired and disappointed. Lola, please try and understand. People are talking too much already. Your sister’s wedding is becoming embarrassing for me. Lola closed her eyes painfully. Mommy, but before she could finish talking, another voice suddenly entered the call loudly. It was Auntie Shade.
Helen, leave her. Some women enjoy acting like men until old age catches them. The women laughed softly. Lola’s chest tightened painfully. Auntie Shade, good evening, she said quietly. Auntie Shade ignored the greeting completely. Lola, if you don’t have husband yet, at least borrow one. Don’t disgrace your mother in Benin. More laughter followed.
Lola ended the call immediately before they could hear her crying again. She sat quietly on the edge of her bed staring at the darkness inside her room while the painful words repeated again and again. Borrow one. Borrow one. Borrow one. After almost 30 minutes of silence, Lola slowly picked up her phone with shaking fingers.
Tears rolled down her cheeks quietly as she searched for Mabel’s number. The phone rang twice before Mabel answered. Hello? Lola swallowed hard emotionally before whispering softly into the phone. Find me the husband. Lola barely slept throughout the night after calling Mabel to find her a fake husband because even though she had agreed emotionally, the whole idea still sounded completely ridiculous in her head.
And several times she almost called Mabel back to cancel everything. But each time she remembered the painful laughter from Auntie Shade and the disappointment in her mother’s voice, her chest tightened painfully again. And she remained quiet on her bed staring into the darkness until morning finally came. The next day at work, Lola could not concentrate properly because her mind kept drifting back to the shame waiting for her in Benin during Jasmine’s wedding.
And even while typing documents for Chief Richard Johnson, she mistakenly typed wrong date twice. Something she almost never did because she was usually very organized and focused. Around lunchtime, Mabel suddenly sent her a message. “Your husband candidate is ready. Meet us by 5:00 p.m. for cerelery.” Lola stared at the message for almost 1 full minute before replying slowly.
“This is madness.” Mabel immediately replied, “You need husband, not prayer meeting.” Lola shook her head tiredly and returned to work, but deep down, nervousness had already started building inside her stomach. By evening, heavy traffic had already started filling most roads in Lagos again when Lola finally reached the small buka Mabel had chosen for the meeting in Surulere.
The place was crowded with noisy customers eating amala, pepper soup, and roasted meat while loud Fuji music played from one old speaker hanging near the counter. Lola instantly became uncomfortable because the environment looked too rough for what she expected. She had imagined meeting a calm, neat, mature man who would at least look presentable enough to convince her family.
But Mabel sat comfortably near one plastic table smiling like somebody preparing for entertainment. “Relax,” Mabel said excitedly as Lola sat down. “You’ll like him.” Lola folded her arms immediately. “If this nonsense embarrasses me, I swear I’ll block you everywhere.” Mabel burst into laughter. “You’ve not even met him yet.
” Lola checked the time again angrily. “He’s already late.” Just then, a loud male voice suddenly shouted from the entrance of the buka, “Babylicious!” Everybody turned immediately, including Lola. Her eyes widened in horror as one tall, handsome man walked inside wearing faded jeans, a black T-shirt, and blue bathroom slippers while chewing roasted corn loudly and holding a bottle of Coke in his other hand.
Lola’s mouth slowly opened in disbelief. “Please tell me that’s not him,” she whispered. Mabel started laughing uncontrollably. “That’s him.” Lola almost stood up immediately to leave, but before she could move, the man had already reached their table smiling confidently like he owned the entire buka. “Sorry I’m late.
” he said cheerfully while dragging plastic chair noisily. “One old woman named Jelly was fighting conductor, so traffic held me.” Then he stretched his hand toward Lola with roasted corn still in the same hand. “I’m Efe Johnson, future temporary husband.” Lola stared at the roasted corn first before slowly looking at his face.
“You came here wearing bathroom slippers?” she asked in complete disbelief. Efe looked down proudly at the slippers. “Italian.” Mabel nearly choked from laughter. Lola closed her eyes briefly like somebody fighting headache. Efe suddenly faced Lola seriously for the first time while wiping his hand. “Look, I know I seem unserious.” he said, “but I can do this job very well.
Just tell me what kind of husband you want.” Lola folded her arms immediately. “First, stop shouting everywhere.” “Okay, baby.” “Don’t call me baby.” “Okay, honey pie.” “Jesus Christ.” Mabel laughed so hard tears entered her eyes. Lola pressed her fingers against her forehead tiredly. “Second,” she continued firmly, “you must behave responsibly in Benin.
No unnecessary jokes, no embarrassing behavior, no flirting with anybody, no touching me, no emotional attachment. You’re simply acting for one weekend and that’s all.” Efe nodded seriously like student receiving instructions from teacher. “Understood.” “And please,” Lola added sharply, “dress properly.” Efe looked offended immediately.
“What’s wrong with my slippers?” Lola looked at him speechlessly while Mabel almost fell from her chair laughing. After some minutes, they finally agreed on payment and travel plans for Jasmine’s wedding in Benin. Efe would pretend to be Lola’s boyfriend and future husband for one weekend only. After the wedding, everybody would go their separate ways and forget the arrangement completely. Simple.
At least that was what Lola hoped. But before the meeting even ended, Efe had already started causing embarrassment again. The waitress returned with food and as people around them ate quietly, Efe suddenly shouted loudly across the buka, “My sweet parliament, pass the pepper now!” The entire restaurant turned toward their table instantly.
Lola nearly died from shame. One man nearby laughed loudly, while another customer muttered, “This guy no get shame.” Lola covered her face briefly, while Mabel almost screamed from laughter. Efe smiled proudly like somebody who had done something impressive. “See chemistry,” he said confidently. Lola stared at him with complete regret already forming inside her chest.
For the first time since agreeing to the fake marriage plan, fear suddenly entered her heart deeply. What exactly had she gotten herself into? But Efe simply leaned back comfortably on the plastic chair with roasted corn still in his hand, smiling confidently like a man already enjoying the chaos he had brought into her life.
The journey from Lagos to Benin started very early in the morning. As Lola sat quietly inside the bus beside Efe, with her arms folded tightly across her chest while trying her best not to lose her patience before they even reached Benin. Because from the moment Efe entered the park, he had already started attracting unnecessary attention to himself by greeting random passengers loudly like long-lost family members and joking with food sellers as if he had known them for years. At one point, he bought boiled
groundnuts from one old woman and started arguing dramatically that she gave him only 19 pieces instead of 20, while the woman laughed loudly and called him a troublesome boy. Lola sat quietly watching him with tired eyes, wondering again how her life had suddenly reached the point where she was traveling to her younger sister’s wedding introduction with a fake boyfriend wearing sunglasses too big for his face and behaving like a comedian on national television.
Throughout the journey, Efe refused to stay quiet for than 2 minutes, he kept talking about random things, making jokes about people sleeping inside the bus, and trying to force Lola into conversations even when she clearly wanted silence. “Relax your face, small.” He whispered at one point while smiling.
“You look like somebody going for court case.” Lola hissed softly and faced the window again while Efe laughed quietly to himself. Several hours later, they finally arrived in Benin where the Daniel’s family house was already filled with wedding activity. Women carried trays up and down the compound while music played loudly from one speaker near the gate and different relatives moved around preparing food, arranging chairs, and discussing wedding plans excitedly.
The moment Lola and Efe entered the compound together, several people turned immediately to stare. Lola instantly became nervous, but before she could even introduce him properly, Efe suddenly transformed into another person completely. He greeted elders confidently, shook hands warmly, smiled brightly, and moved through the compound like a politician campaigning for election. “Good afternoon, sir.
” He shouted cheerfully while greeting one uncle carrying drinks. “Mama, you are looking younger than your daughters.” He told one auntie causing the woman to laugh loudly in embarrassment. Even the children instantly gathered around him because he started sharing biscuits from his bag while asking them funny questions.
Lola stood there in complete shock watching the same unserious man from Surulere suddenly behave with so much confidence and charm. Then came the biggest surprise of all. Lola’s grandmother, Mama Rebecca, slowly walked out from one of the rooms with her walking stick while two women supported her carefully. Mama Rebecca was respected deeply inside the family because of her age and strong personality, and she rarely liked strangers quickly.
But the moment Efe saw her, he rushed forward dramatically and knelt down immediately. “Grandma!” he shouted excitedly, like somebody who had known her forever. “Please, tell me your secret because you are too beautiful for this age.” The entire compound burst into laughter, while Mama Rebecca covered her mouth shyly. “This boy has sweet mouth,” she said, laughing.
Efe quickly carried her small bag and escorted her carefully to her chair, while still joking with her nonstop. Within less than 10 minutes, Mama Rebecca already loved him completely. “Lola finally brought good man,” she announced proudly to everybody nearby. Lola almost laughed from disbelief. The same relatives who normally treated her like expired bread suddenly started respecting her because they assumed Efe was rich, confident, and romantic.
Some of her aunties even started whispering among themselves admiringly, while younger cousins looked at Lola with surprise, like she had secretly won jackpot. But, not everybody was convinced. Auntie Shade stood quietly near the kitchen area, watching Efe suspiciously with narrow eyes. She did not smile once. “Something about this boy is too smooth,” she whispered quietly to another aunt. “I don’t trust him.
” Meanwhile, the real problem started when different family members began asking Lola and Efe how they met because Efe could not keep one story consistently. To one uncle, he confidently said they met during church program in Lagos. 20 minutes later, Lola overheard him telling another aunt they met on Twitter after arguing about football online.
Then, later, he told Jasmine’s fiance Toby that he met Lola at gym while helping her carry weights. Lola nearly lost her mind. She quickly dragged Efe to one corner behind the house angrily. “What is wrong with you?” she whispered harshly. “Why are you changing stories? Effe blinked innocently. Creativity. Lola nearly screamed.
You are going to expose us. But Effe only grinned confidently. Relax, your family likes me too much already. Lola stared at him speechless before walking away in frustration while Effe laughed quietly behind her. As evening approached, more relatives arrived for family dinner and the compound became noisier with music, laughter and conversations happening everywhere.
During dinner, everybody sat around large tables eating pounded yam, egusi soup, rice and meat discussing wedding plans excitedly. Effe continued entertaining people with stories and jokes until one dangerous moment nearly destroyed everything completely. One elderly man named Uncle Bassi, known for being very strict and proud, started talking seriously about how young men nowadays lacked discipline and respect.
Trying to be funny, Effe laughed loudly and said, “Uncle, if discipline worked that well, why do you still have high blood pressure?” Silence immediately covered the table. Lola’s heart almost stopped. Several people froze completely while Uncle Bassi slowly lowered his spoon and stared at Effe with dangerous eyes.
Even the music outside suddenly felt quieter. Lola wanted to disappear from existence immediately. “Young man,” Uncle Bassi said slowly, “are you insulting me?” Before Lola could even apologize, Effe suddenly stood up dramatically and held his chest like actor inside Nollywood film. “Sir,” he shouted emotionally, “how can I insult future father-in-law’s elder brother? Impossible.
” Some people began laughing nervously. Effe quickly continued before Uncle Bassi could speak again. “I only meant that men like you are too too and stubborn to rest. That is why Nigerian fathers refuse to grow old peacefully.” More laughter spread around the table gradually. Even Uncle Bayo’s serious face finally softened slightly.
“This boy talks too much.” He muttered while shaking his head. Everybody laughed loudly again and the tension disappeared completely. Lola released the breath she had been holding painfully while Efes sat down proudly like man who had just survived war. Later that night, after most people had gone inside to sleep, Lola stepped outside briefly to get fresh air because the day had completely exhausted her mentally.
The compound was quieter now with only soft sounds of distant music coming from another street nearby while moonlight covered the large family compound softly. As Lola walked slowly near the side of the house, she suddenly noticed Efes sitting alone quietly on one wooden bench far from everybody else.
For the first time all day, he was not smiling, he was not joking, he was simply staring into the darkness silently with a strange sadness that Lola had never seen before. His shoulders looked heavy suddenly like somebody carrying invisible pain inside his chest. Lola watched him quietly from a distance feeling confused because only minutes earlier he had been making everybody laugh loudly during dinner.
Yet now, he looked completely broken and lost in thought. Before she could move closer, Efes suddenly noticed her standing there and immediately forced another onto his face. “Why are you looking at me like ghost?” He joked quickly while standing. Lola stared at him quietly for some seconds, but instead of asking questions, she simply shook her head slowly and walked back inside feeling strangely unsettled by the sadness she had briefly seen hiding behind all his laughter.
By the next morning, the Daniel’s family compound had already turned into complete madness as wedding preparations filled every corner of the house with noise, movement, music, shouting, and endless confusion while women carried trays of tomatoes and peppers across the compound and hired decorators moved chairs around under the hot Benin sun.
Lola woke up already tired because she knew controlling Ify for another full day would be like trying to control generator noise during power outage. The moment she stepped outside, her fear immediately became reality because Ify had somehow already joined the women cooking team behind the house wearing one apron over his clothes while laughing loudly and helping them pound yam like somebody contesting for village chief.
“Turn it properly.” one woman shouted while laughing as Ify struggled dramatically with the heavy mortar. Sweat covered his face, but he continued making everybody laugh nonstop with jokes and funny stories until even strict Auntie Nkechi, who hardly smiled, was wiping tears of laughter from her eyes. Lola stood there in shock watching several women already behaving like Ify had been part of the family for years.
“What exactly are you doing?” she whispered angrily while pulling him aside briefly. Ify blinked innocently. “Community service.” Lola nearly screamed. “You’re supposed to act normal.” Ify looked around at the laughing women proudly, “But everybody likes me.” Before Lola could answer, one teenage cousin suddenly shouted loudly from nearby, “Ify, come and dance.
” Loud music had started playing from one speaker near the gate and within seconds, Ify rushed there happily abandoning Lola immediately. Soon, he was dancing publicly with village women, younger cousins, and neighborhood girls while people gathered around clapping and laughing loudly. Even small children followed him around the compound excitedly because he kept buying sweets and joking with them carelessly.
Lola watched everything with growing frustration because the more she tried controlling him, the more impossible he became. At one point, she caught two neighborhood girls whispering excitedly while staring at Ify. “He’s very handsome.” one girl whispered shyly. “And funny, too.” The other girl nodded quickly. “Lola is lucky.
” Lola almost laughed bitterly because if only they knew the truth behind the fake relationship they were admiring so much. Later that afternoon, while decorators arranged flowers and chairs for the engagement dinner, Jasmine quietly entered Lola’s room looking emotionally tired. Unlike the excitement everybody expected from a bride-to-be, Jasmine’s face looked strangely heavy.
She sat beside Lola quietly for some moments before speaking softly. “Can I tell you something honestly?” Lola looked at her carefully. “What happened?” Jasmine hesitated briefly before lowering her voice. “I envy you.” Lola almost choked. “Me?” Jasmine nodded slowly while staring outside the window where Ify’s loud laughter could still be heard from the compound.
“Ify genuinely makes you happy.” Lola stared at her sister in surprise. Jasmine smiled sadly. “I’ve never seen you laugh this freely before.” Lola became uncomfortable immediately. “Jasmine, you’re about to marry rich man. What are you talking about?” But Jasmine shook her head slowly. “Toby is good man, yes. Responsible, too. But everything with him feels serious all the time.
Business, reputation, class, money, rules.” Her eyes slowly filled with emotion. “But when Ify is around you, you become lighter.” Lola remained quiet because deep inside, part of her new Jasmine was right, even though the relationship itself was fake. Jasmine smiled weakly again. “Sometimes, I wish somebody could love me loudly the way Ify loves you.
” Lola looked away immediately, feeling guilty because Jasmine did not know the truth. Before she could even reply properly, loud shouting outside interrupted them as more guests started arriving for the evening engagement dinner. By nightfall, the family compound looked beautiful with lights shining everywhere, while music played loudly and expensive cars parked outside the gate as relatives, friends, and neighbors gathered excitedly for the ceremony.
Lola wore a beautiful wine-colored gown, while Ify, surprisingly, dressed properly for once in black senator outfit that made several women stare at him openly. Even Lola herself became briefly speechless when she saw him, because underneath all the jokes and noise, Ify was actually very handsome. The engagement dinner started peacefully with food, music, dancing, and family introductions, until one unexpected arrival suddenly changed the atmosphere completely.
A black luxury car stopped outside the compound, and moments later, Lola’s ex-boyfriend, Femi Losin, stepped out confidently beside his glamorous fiance, Sandra. The moment Lola saw him, her stomach tightened immediately. Femi was the same man who had broken her heart 2 years earlier after constantly complaining that she was too independent and too career-focused.
Now, he worked a successful banker in Lagos and behaved like somebody who had conquered life completely. Sandra, his fiance, followed beside him proudly, wearing expensive designer dress and shining jewelry. Several relatives immediately started greeting Femi warmly, because many people in the family had once expected him to marry Lola.
Femi greeted people confidently until his eyes finally landed on Lola and Ife standing together. A slow mocking smile appeared here on his face immediately. “Wow!” he said loudly enough for people nearby to hear. “Lola finally brought man.” The atmosphere suddenly became awkward. Lola forced a tight smile politely, while Ife watched quietly beside her.
Femi shook Ife’s hand casually before smirking again. “Hope you can handle her strong character.” Sandra laughed softly beside him. Lola’s face tightened painfully, but she remained silent. Then Femi looked around dramatically before speaking again. “Honestly, when I heard Lola finally found somebody, I was shocked.” Some relatives exchanged uncomfortable glances already, sensing danger.
Femi continued smiling carelessly, “But life surprises people, sha. Even people nobody expect can still find husband somehow.” The insult vibrated heavily. Silence spread slowly around the area. Lola felt heat rising painfully inside her chest as old humiliation returned. Then Femi laughed softly and added the final painful statement.
“Although these days some people live on rent relationship just to survive family pressure.” Sandra laughed openly this time, while several relatives looked down awkwardly. Lola felt completely humiliated. Even Auntie Shade suddenly looked suspiciously at Ife again. Lola opened her mouth to speak, but before she could say anything, Ife suddenly stepped forward calmly.
For the first time since arriving Benin, his playful smile disappeared completely. His face became serious in a way Lola had never seen before. He looked directly at Femi quietly before speaking. “You know something funny? People always talk about marriage like it’s competition. Like a woman becomes a failure because she hasn’t won a ring.
Femi’s smile slowly faded. Ife looked briefly at Lola before continuing. “Do you know how many women are suffering inside bad marriages right now because society pressured them to marry anybody?” Nobody spoke. Even the music nearby felt distant. Ife’s voice became deeper emotionally. “Lola is one of the hardest working and kindest women I’ve ever met, but instead of respecting her for that, people reduce her entire life to whether a man has married her.
” Several older women shifted uncomfortably while listening in. Ife looked directly at Femi again. “And any man who makes a woman feel small because she’s unmarried does not deserve her in the first place.” Complete silence covered the compound. Lola felt tears gathering instantly inside her eyes because nobody had ever defended her publicly like that before, not even her own family.
Femi looked embarrassed immediately while Sandra crossed her arms awkwardly. Mama Rebecca nodded slowly with an emotional expression on her face while some relatives murmured quietly among themselves. Even Auntie Shade looked briefly speechless. After some seconds, Femi forced a dry laugh awkwardly, but nobody laughed anymore.
The atmosphere had already changed completely. Later that night, after most guests had gone and the compound finally became quieter, Lola lay awake inside her room unable to stop thinking about Ife’s words earlier during dinner. Her chest still felt strangely warm and emotional remembering how confidently he had defended her without hesitation.
Around midnight, unable to sleep, she quietly stepped outside to get fresh air. The compound was dark and peaceful now with some soft cricket sounds filling the night air. As Lola walked slowly near the side of the house, she suddenly heard soft sounds nearby. She stopped immediately. Somebody was crying quietly.
Confused, she moved closer carefully until she saw Effie sitting alone outside in the darkness with his head lowered while silent tears rolled down his face. Lola froze completely in shock. The same loud funny man who spent all day making everybody laugh was now sitting alone crying like somebody carrying deep pain inside his heart.
Before she could even move or speak, Effie quickly wiped his face and looked away into the darkness while Lola stood hidden silently feeling something painful shift inside her chest for the first time. After the wedding weekend finally ended, Lola honestly felt relieved because even though Effie had surprisingly helped her survive the constant embarrassment from family members in Benin, she was still emotionally exhausted from pretending and secretly looked forward to returning to her quiet Lagos life again.
Early Monday morning, Lola and Effie boarded the bus back to Lagos while most family members stood waving goodbye happily, especially Mama Rebecca who held Effie’s hand tightly and warned him not to break her granddaughter’s heart. Lola nearly laughed from guilt while Effie smiled confidently and promised to visit again soon.
Throughout the journey back to Lagos, Effie remained unusually quieter than normal and several times Lola caught him staring outside the window thoughtfully instead of cracking jokes non-stop like usual. Once they arrived Lagos, the reality of normal life slowly returned again. Lola went back to work while Effie disappeared briefly to settle some things.
At first, everything seemed fine until later that same evening when Lola returned home from work and nearly screamed in shock after finding Effie sitting outside her apartment building surrounded by several bags and one old mattress. “What happened?” she asked immediately in confusion. Effie scratched his head awkwardly before speaking casually like it was no big problem.
Small misunderstanding with landlord. Lola narrowed her eyes immediately. What kind of misunderstanding? Effe smiled weakly. He said if I don’t pay rent this week, I should misunderstand myself outside. Lola stared at the bags again slowly. You are evicted? Effe pointed dramatically toward the sky. Technically, yes.
Lola almost turned around immediately because deep inside she already sensed danger. But before she could speak, Effe sighed softly and suddenly looked strangely defeated for the first time. I’ll figure something out, he muttered quietly while looking away. Lola’s chest tightened painfully again because despite all his jokes and noise, she suddenly remembered the lonely tears she had seen him crying secretly in Benin.
After several seconds of silence, she sighed heavily and finally spoke. You can stay for a few days. Effe blinked immediately. Inside your apartment? Lola pointed one finger quickly. Few days only and you must behave yourself. Before she could finish talking properly, Effe suddenly grabbed his bags excitedly. God bless your future children.
Lola closed her eyes tiredly because she already knew peace had officially left her life. From the very first night, Effe completely destroyed every normal routine inside Lola’s apartment. He behaved like somebody who had lived there for years already. The next morning, Lola woke up to loud off-key singing from the bathroom.
While Effe loudly performed old Nigerian songs while bathing like musician preparing for concert. Hey, Jehovah over do! He screamed so loudly that one neighbor even knocked the wall angrily. Lola rushed toward the bathroom immediately. Will you keep quiet? Effe opened the door slightly with foam still covering his face. Music is healing.
Lola nearly lost her mind. That same afternoon, she discovered Effe had finished her expensive imported cereal and eating the chicken she had been saving inside the freezer without even asking permission. “Why are you eating everything?” she snapped angrily. Effia shrugged carelessly while chewing meat comfortably. “Food is temporary.
Hunger is dangerous.” Lola wanted to throw a pillow at his head. But the embarrassment became worse 2 days later when Lola returned from work exhausted, only to discover three elderly women from the compound sitting comfortably inside her apartment laughing loudly with Effia while drinking malt and eating chin-chin.
“What is going on here?” she asked in complete confusion. One woman smiled immediately. “Your husband is very funny.” Another woman added happily. “He fixed my television this afternoon.” Lola stared at Effia in disbelief while he smiled proudly like local celebrity. After the women finally left, Lola faced him angrily.
“Why are you inviting neighbors inside my house?” Effia looked offended immediately. “Community relationship is important.” Lola almost screamed into the ceiling. Yet, despite all the chaos, something strange slowly started happening inside the apartment. Lola began laughing again naturally without forcing it.
The quiet loneliness that once filled her evenings slowly disappeared because Effia somehow turned ordinary moments into entertainment. One evening during power outage, Effia performed fake motivational seminar using torchlight while pretending to be a billionaire life coach. And Lola laughed so hard tears entered her eyes for the first time in many months.
Another night, he forced her to join him dancing in the sitting room during rainfall after NEPA took light again. Slowly, without fully realizing it, Lola’s apartment stopped feeling cold and empty. Even Mabel began noticing the changes immediately. One afternoon while eating noodles inside Lola’s kitchen, Mabel watched Lola smiling absent-mindedly at one of Effia’s stupid jokes from the sitting room and narrowed her eyes suspiciously.
“You are falling for him.” she announced suddenly. Lola almost dropped her spoon. “Who?” Mabel pointed dramatically toward the sitting room. “Bathroom slipper Romeo.” Lola hissed loudly and walked away pretending annoyance, but deep inside her chest the words unsettled her badly because part of her already knew Mabel was not completely wrong.
Meanwhile, at work things also started becoming more complicated because after returning from Benin, Lola’s colleagues suddenly became more interested in her personal life. Vanessa especially kept asking suspicious questions. “So, why did you hide this mysterious boyfriend all these years?” she asked mockingly one afternoon.
Another colleague laughed immediately. “Maybe he just returned from abroad.” Lola forced polite smile while avoiding details carefully because explaining Efe to anybody felt almost impossible. But, the real disaster happened 3 days later during lunch break when Lola was organizing files quietly inside the office reception area and suddenly heard loud familiar voice from downstairs shouting, “My sweet parliament!” Lola froze completely.
Her heart almost stopped instantly. Before she could even react, Efe entered the office building wearing one bright yellow shirt, bathroom slippers again, and carrying a nylon bag of roasted corn greeting security guards loudly like old friends. Several workers turned immediately to stare. Lola wanted the ground to open instantly.
“What are you doing here?” she whispered harshly while rushing toward him. Efe smiled proudly. “I brought lunch for my hard-working wife.” Lola nearly fainted from embarrassment because Vanessa and several other workers were already staring openly from nearby offices. What’s still, Efe suddenly greeted one senior manager loudly.
“Chairman, sir, you are shining like imported generator.” The confused manager blinked repeatedly while some workers struggled not to laugh openly. Vanessa crossed her arms suspiciously while watching Lola carefully. “So, this is the husband?” she asked slowly. Lola wanted to disappear permanently from Earth while Ife stood there smiling confidently like a man completely unaware that he had just turned her professional office life into another public circus.
As the days slowly passed, Lola began noticing that behind all of Ife’s noise, jokes, and unserious behavior, something deeper seemed hidden inside him. Something painful that he tried very hard to cover with laughter every single day. First, she ignored the feeling because Ife still behaved like complete trouble inside the apartment.
He still sang loudly while bathing, still argued with television presenters during football matches like they could hear him, and still annoyed her by finishing food carelessly without asking permission. But little by little, Lola started seeing strange moments that did not match the funny version of Ife everybody knew. Some nights she would wake up suddenly and hear movement from the sitting room only to find Ife sitting quietly in darkness unable to sleep.
Other times she noticed him staring into space with sadness in his eyes before quickly forcing another joke the moment she realized she was looking at him. One night, around 2:00 a.m., Lola woke up after hearing a strange sound from the sitting room. She walked out quietly and found Ife sleeping restlessly on the couch, sweating heavily and breathing fast like somebody running from danger inside his dream.
Suddenly he shouted softly, “Daniel!” before sitting up immediately in fear. Lola froze near the doorway while Ife looked around confused for a few seconds before realizing where he was. The moment he saw Lola standing there, he quickly forced a weak smile. “Bad dream,” he muttered casually while wiping sweat from his face.
Lola wanted to ask questions, but something about the pain in his eyes stopped her. The next morning he behaved normally again, joking loudly and pretending nothing happened, but Lola could no longer ignore the strange feeling growing inside her chest. Then another thing started bothering her. Sometimes Ife disappeared for hours without explanation.
He would leave the apartment in the afternoon and return late evening looking tired but refusing to explain where he had gone. Anytime Lola asked, he always gave funny useless answers. “Secret Baloney a meeting.” he would say jokingly or “Government mission.” One Saturday afternoon Ife left the apartment again claiming he was going to hustle.
Lola suddenly made up her mind to follow him secretly because curiosity had already started disturbing her deeply. She entered taxi quietly after seeing Ife board one bus heading toward Yaba. For almost 40 minutes Lola followed him carefully until she became completely confused because instead of going anywhere suspicious, Ife finally stopped in front of one small old orphanage hidden inside quiet street in Yaba.
Lola remained inside the taxi watching in surprise as children suddenly run outside screaming happily the moment they saw him. “Uncle Ife!” they shouted excitedly while hugging him tightly. Lola blinked repeatedly in confusion. She watched Ife laugh freely with the children while carrying some of them on his shoulders and sharing snacks from nylon bags he had brought.
The same loud unserious man who annoyed her daily suddenly looked completely different around the children. Softer, gentler, happier. Lola slowly stepped down from the taxi and moved closer carefully without Ife noticing her immediately. One older woman standing near the entrance smiled warmly at Ife while shaking her head.
“These children have been waiting for you since morning.” she said. Ife laughed softly. “Tell them I’m not Dangote.” The woman laughed while Lola stood quietly nearby trying to understand what exactly she was seeing. A few minutes later the older woman finally noticed Lola standing there awkwardly and walked toward her kindly. “Can I help you?” she asked.
Lola looked uncomfortable immediately. “I I know Ife.” The woman smiled warmly. “Ah, you’re one of his people.” Lola looked toward Ife again, where he sat on the floor helping one little girl with homework while several children surrounded him happily. “He comes here often?” Lola asked quietly. The woman nodded proudly. “Almost every week.
” Lola looked surprised. “Why?” The woman smiled softly. “Because he has good heart.” Then, she introduced herself as Mama Bisi, the owner of the orphanage. Slowly, she explained how Ife had been helping the children quietly, even though he himself clearly struggled financially. Sometimes he bought food, sometimes clothes, sometimes medicine.
Mama Bisi lowered her voice emotionally. “Three children here are still in school because Ife secretly pays their fees.” Lola stared in disbelief immediately. “Ife?” Mama Bisi nodded. “That boy pretends too much with jokes, but his heart carries heavy things.” Suddenly, Lola felt something shift deeply inside her chest.
She looked toward Ife again and realized she truly knew almost nothing about him. The children clearly adored him. Even the way they hugged him and laughed around him showed it was not his first time there. Lola quietly watched him for several more minutes before leaving silently without letting him know she had followed him.
That evening, when Ife returned home carrying bread and groundnuts casually like nothing happened, Lola stared at him differently for the first time. “Why you looking at me like police officer?” Ife asked suspiciously while removing his slippers. Lola shook her head slowly. “Nothing.” But inside her mind, one question kept repeating again and again.
“Who exactly is this man?” As the days continued passing, the atmosphere between Lola and Ife slowly changed without either of them fully realizing. Their conversations became softer. Their laughter became more natural. Sometimes they sat together watching television quietly without arguing. Sometimes, Lola caught herself smiling before opening the door because she already knew Ife would say something stupid the moment she entered.
Even Mabel noticed the difference immediately. “Your eyes are shining these days,” Mabel teased one evening. Lola denied it quickly, but deep down she knew something dangerous was already happening inside her heart. Then, one night, heavy rain suddenly started falling across Lagos. While Lola and Ife they sat inside the apartment eating noodles.
Minutes later, NEPA took light and darkness immediately filled the room, except for a small candle light glowing near the table. Rain continued beating loudly outside while cool air entered softly through the windows. For once, Ife was unusually quiet. Lola looked at him carefully across the candle light. “Why do you hide everything with jokes?” she asked softly before she could stop herself.
Ife looked surprised briefly before smiling faintly. “Because if people laugh, they stop asking questions.” Lola remained quiet. After some seconds, she spoke again. “You act like somebody running away from something.” Ife stared at the candle silently for long moment before speaking quietly. “Maybe I am.” Lola’s chest tightened slightly.
Rain continued falling heavily outside while silence filled the room again. Then, Ife suddenly looked at her and asked softly, “Have you ever felt like people only see what you failed to become?” Lola swallowed slowly because the question touched somewhere painfully immediately. She nodded quietly. “Every day.” Ife smiled sadly. “Same.
” They talked for long time that night about loneliness, disappointment, family pressure, broken dreams, and pretending to be okay when everything inside hurts. For the first time, Ife saw him without noise or performance, just a tired man carrying hidden pain quietly. At one point, Ife almost spoke again, like he wanted to finally reveal something important.
“There are things about me you don’t know,” he said quietly while staring into the darkness. Lola looked at him carefully. “Then tell me.” Ife remained silent for few seconds before suddenly forcing another small smile. “One day.” He quickly changed the topic afterward, but Lola barely heard anything else because her heart was already beating strangely inside her chest.
Later that night, after Ife had fallen asleep on the couch, Lola remained quietly inside her room staring at the ceiling while rain continued falling softly outside. Slowly, painfully, she finally admitted the truth to herself. She was falling in love with him. The following Monday started like every other busy morning at Johnson Holdings.
As workers moved around the large office building carrying files, answering calls, and rushing from one department to another. While Lola sat quietly at her desk trying to focus on work, even though her mind kept drifting back to Ife and the strange feelings growing inside her heart. Things between them had become softer during the past few days.
And for the first time in a very long while, Lola no longer dreaded returning home after work because somehow Ife had turned her lonely apartment into a place filled with laughter, noise, and life. That morning, before leaving for work, Ife had annoyed her again by dancing around the kitchen while frying eggs badly and singing old songs loudly until she laughed despite trying not to.
But even while smiling, Lola still could not stop thinking about the strange sadness hidden behind Ife’s jokes and all the unanswered questions surrounding him. Around midday, one of the senior managers suddenly informed Lola that Chief Richard Johnson needed some important files urgently for a private meeting happening inside his office.
Lola quickly gathered the documents and headed toward the executive floor without thinking much about it. As she reached the large office door, she adjusted her clothes neatly, knocked softly, and entered carefully. Several board members sat around the office discussing company matters seriously, while Chief Richard Johnson stood near the large window speaking calmly.
Lola walked in respectfully carrying the files until her eyes suddenly landed on a huge framed family portrait hanging on the wall beside the bookshelf. Instantly, her legs stopped moving. The files nearly slipped from her hands. Her heart began beating wildly inside her chest. Inside the picture stood Chief Richard Johnson surrounded by several family members smiling proudly in expensive clothes, but Lola no longer saw anybody else because one face completely froze her blood. Efe.
Younger, cleaner, wearing expensive suit and standing confidently beside Chief Johnson with one hand inside his pocket. Lola stared at the picture in complete shock while her mind struggled to understand what her eyes were seeing. It was Efe. There was no mistake. The same face, the same eyes, the same smile.
Only this version looked richer, calmer, and more polished than the funny man currently sleeping on her couch at home. Lola? Chief Johnson’s voice pulled her back slightly. Are you all right? Lola swallowed hard immediately. Sir? Chief Johnson noticed her staring at the portrait and his expression changed softly.
For a few seconds, he looked at the picture quietly before speaking in lower voice. “That is my son,” he said slowly, “Eric Johnson.” Lola felt her knees weaken immediately. She forced herself to remain standing normally while Chief Johnson sighed deeply. “My missing son.” The office suddenly felt too hot.
Lola could barely breathe properly anymore. She slowly placed the files on the table while trying hard not to react. The meeting continued around her, but the voices inside the room now sounded distant and blurry because her entire mind had already exploded into confusion. Eric Johnson, missing son, Effa. After the meeting finally ended and the other men left the office one after another, Lola remained behind pretending to arrange some documents because she desperately needed answers.
Chief Johnson walked slowly toward the portrait and stared at it quietly for few seconds before speaking again without even looking at her. “Five years now,” he murmured sadly, “nobody knows where he is.” Lola looked at him carefully. “What happened to him, sir?” Chief Johnson remained silent briefly before sitting down heavily on one chair, looking suddenly older and more tired than usual.
“Family problems,” he answered quietly, “betrayal, pain, mistakes.” Lola listened silently while her chest continued beating painfully. Chief Johnson rubbed his forehead tiredly before continuing. “Eric was my first son, brilliant boy, strong-headed, too.” A faint sad smile crossed his face briefly.
“Too emotional sometimes.” Then his expression darkened again. “Things changed after his younger brother Daniel died.” Lola froze slightly, remembering Effa shouting the name Daniel in his nightmare. Chief Johnson continued speaking slowly, almost like a man carrying deep regret inside his chest. After Daniel’s death, this family scattered.
Accusations started, business problems entered. Somebody accused Eric of stealing money from the company. Lola’s eyes widened slowly. Did he do it? Chief Johnson sighed deeply. I don’t know anymore. The pain in his voice sounded real. At that time, everything happened too fast.
My wife kept insisting Eric had changed badly after Daniel’s death. We argued constantly. Then one day, he disappeared. Silence filled the office briefly. Chief Johnson stared at the family portrait again quietly. No calls, no explanation, nothing. Lola felt goosebumps slowly rise across her skin because every piece of information connected directly to the strange brokenness she had been noticing in Efe all along.
Suddenly, many things started making sense. The nightmares, the sadness, the way he avoided talking about his past, the hidden pain behind his laughter. “Sometimes,” Chief Johnson said softly, “I still believe he’s alive somewhere.” Lola quickly looked away before her face exposed anything dangerous. After leaving the office, she spent the rest of the afternoon completely distracted.
Her mind could barely process what she had discovered. Efe was not just some funny struggling man surviving random jobs in Lagos. He was actually Eric Johnson, son of the owner of Johnson Holdings, the missing heir to one of the biggest companies in Lagos. Nothing made sense anymore. That evening, after work, Lola secretly began searching through old company articles online, and slowly more shocking information appeared.
Old newspaper reports mentioned Eric Johnson disappearing mysteriously years earlier after internal family scandals and rumors surrounding missing company funds. Some articles even called him the lost son of Johnson Holdings. Lola sat frozen in front of her phone for long minutes staring at Efe’s old pictures online.
Even dressed in expensive suits beside politicians and business executives, his eyes still looked exactly the same. When Lola finally returned home later that night, Efe was lying comfortably on the couch eating biscuits and watching football loudly like normal. The moment he saw her, he smiled casually.
“My sweet parliament has returned.” Lola stared at him differently now, almost like she was seeing another person completely. Efe quickly noticed something strange in her face. “Why are you looking at me like that?” he asked suspiciously. Lola quickly forced a small smile. “Nothing.” But throughout the evening, she behaved unusually quiet and distracted.
Several times Efe caught her staring at him strangely before quickly looking away again. “Did somebody die in your office?” he asked jokingly while eating noodles later that night. Lola shook her head quickly. “I’m just tired.” Efe narrowed his eyes slightly like he sensed something deeper but did not push further. Later that night after Efe fell asleep peacefully on the couch with one arm hanging loosely beside him, Lola quietly stood near the doorway staring at him in silence with confusion, fear, and curiosity battled heavily inside her
chest. The loud funny man she thought she knew suddenly felt like a complete stranger. Slowly she whispered into the darkness with tears gathering inside her eyes. “Who are you really?” After discovering the truth about Efe at Johnson Holdings, Lola could no longer look at him the same way because every smile, every joke, and every careless behavior now felt like a mask hiding something much deeper and more painful underneath.
For two full days, she moved around the apartment pretending everything was normal. But inside her chest, confusion kept growing stronger. Each time Effe laughed loudly at television or argued with neighbors jokingly, Lola kept remembering the expensive young man smiling confidently inside the family portrait hanging in Chief Richard Johnson’s office.
She barely slept properly anymore because her mind remained full of unanswered questions. Why would the son of one of the richest businessmen in Lagos abandon everything and start living like this? Why did he hide his identity completely? Why did he look so broken whenever nobody was watching? And most importantly, why did she feel so scared of losing him suddenly? Effe also started noticing her strange behavior immediately.
Lola became quieter around him. Sometimes, she stared at him for too long before quickly looking away. Other times, she seemed lost in thought even while he joked around the apartment. One evening, while they ate rice quietly inside the sitting room, Effe finally dropped his spoon and looked at her carefully. “All right,” he said slowly.
“What’s going on?” Lola forced small smile quickly. “Nothing.” Effe shook his head immediately. “You’ve been behaving strange since Monday.” Lola looked away. “I’m fine.” Effe leaned back slowly while studying her face. “Did I offend you?” Lola remained silent for few seconds before standing up suddenly. “We need to talk.
” Something in her voice immediately made Effe serious. He slowly placed his plate down and watched her quietly as she stood near the window trying to gather courage. Her heart beat painfully inside her chest because she had no idea how this conversation would end. Finally, she turned toward him slowly. “Who is Eric Johnson?” The moment the words left her mouth, all expression disappeared from FF’s instantly.
Silence filled the room completely. Even the television noise suddenly felt faraway. Lola watched shock enter his eyes immediately before he quickly forced small laugh. “Who?” Lola swallowed hard. “Please don’t lie to me.” FF slowly stood up from the couch, now looking tense for the first time in days. “Lola.” She interrupted him softly.
“I saw your picture in Chief Johnson’s office.” Complete silence returned again. FF stared at her for long seconds without moving, while Lola felt tears slowly gathering in her eyes. Finally, he turned away slowly and rubbed both hands across his face tiredly. “Damn.” He whispered softly. Lola’s chest tightened painfully, because in that moment she already knew the truth before he even spoke again.
FF remained quiet for almost one full minute before finally speaking in low voice. “My real name is Eric Johnson.” Lola closed her eyes briefly as painful emotions rushed through her chest. Hearing him finally admit it made everything suddenly feel more real and heavier. FF walked slowly toward the window and stood there quietly with his back facing her, while rain clouds gathered outside.
“I never planned for you to find out like this,” he said softly. Lola looked at him emotionally. “Why did you hide it?” FF laughed bitterly without humor. “Because Eric Johnson died a long time ago.” Lola felt goosebumps rise slowly across her skin. For the first time since knowing him, FF no longer sounded playful or unserious.
He sounded tired, broken, defeated. Slowly, he finally began telling her everything. “Yes, Aliyah, his life had been completely different. He grew up surrounded by wealth, security, expensive schools, and powerful people because he was the first son of Chief Richard Johnson. But according to him, money did not protect people from pain inside that house.
After his mother died, Chief Johnson remarried a woman named Victoria Johnson. At first, she acted caring and supportive, but slowly things changed. Victoria became obsessed with power and influence inside the family and constantly manipulated situations to push Eric aside while positioning herself closer to the company and his father.
“She hated me,” Effa said quietly while staring outside. “Not openly at first, but little by little she turned my father against me.” Lola listened silently while tears gathered slowly in her eyes. Effa explained how things became worse after the death of his younger brother Daniel, the same name he had shouted during his nightmare.
His voice broke slightly the moment he mentioned him. “Daniel was my best friend,” he whispered painfully. “That boy trusted me more than anybody.” Lola’s chest tightened. Effa slowly sat down again while rubbing his forehead tiredly. “Everything scattered after he died.” He explained that Daniel died during a terrible family conflict involving arguments, accusations, and company tension that completely destroyed the peace inside the Johnson family.
After Daniel’s death, Victoria started accusing Eric secretly of changing badly and becoming dangerous. Then later, huge amount of company money suddenly disappeared and suspicion immediately fell on Eric. “I didn’t steal anything,” he said quietly while tears gathered slowly inside his eyes. But nobody cared. Lola felt her own tears fall softly now.
Efe laughed bitterly. My father didn’t even defend me properly. He just kept asking me questions like I was criminal. Pain filled his face as he continued talking. Everywhere became toxic. People I trusted started avoiding me. Reporters started gossiping. Family members whispered behind my back. Then one night, after another terrible fight inside the house, he packed few things quietly and disappeared.
I just left, he whispered. I didn’t even know where I was going. Lola covered her mouth emotionally while listening. Efe explained how he changed his name completely and started surviving through random jobs, acting gigs, and anything that could bring money. At first, I thought I would return after few weeks, he admitted softly.
But the longer I stayed away, the easier it became pretending Eric Johnson never existed. Tears slowly rolled down his face now openly. It [snorts] was easier being nobody than being hated inside my own home. Lola could no longer hold herself back. She walked toward him slowly and hugged him tightly.
For few seconds, Efe remained stiff in surprise before finally breaking down completely against her shoulder. Lola held him quietly while he cried softly like a man carrying too much pain alone for too many years. How on heart broke listening to everything he had survived secretly, while still finding strength to make everybody around him laugh every day.
Much later that night, after Efe finally calmed down, they sat quietly together in the dark holding hands while soft rain fell outside. Neither of them spoke for long time because too many emotions already filled the room. But far away in another part of Lagos, danger had already started rising quietly. Inside a luxurious mansion, Victoria Johnson sat inside her bedroom looking through old family documents when one nervous private investigator entered carefully holding envelope.
“Madam,” he said quietly, “I found him.” Victoria’s expression immediately changed. “What?” The man handed her recent photograph secretly taken of Femi outside Lola’s apartment building. Victoria stared at the picture in complete shock. “Eric,” she whispered slowly. Fear and anger slowly filled her eyes at the same time because the son she thought had disappeared forever was suddenly alive again and his return threatened everything she had fought desperately to control for years.
After [snorts] Femi finally revealed the truth about his real identity, life changed so fast that Lola barely recognized anything anymore because within just a few days, the quiet, peaceful world they had built together inside her small apartment suddenly became filled with attention, gossip, pressure, and confusion from every direction.
At first, Femi still tried behaving normally, joking around the house and pretending nothing had changed, but Lola could already see the tension growing inside him each time his phone rang or somebody stared too long at him outside. Somehow, the rumors had already started spreading quietly that the missing son of Chief Richard Johnson was alive and hiding somewhere in Lagos.
Lola did not even know exactly how the information escaped, but one morning while entering the office building, she suddenly noticed workers whispering while staring at her strangely. The moment she reached her desk, Mabel rushed toward her looking panicked while holding her phone tightly.
“Lola,” she whispered urgently, “see this.” Lola collected the phone and instantly felt her stomach tighten. One gossip blog had already posted old pictures of Eric Johnson beside new blurry pictures of Efe taken secretly somewhere outside her apartment building. The headline read, “Missing billionaire’s son spotted alive in Lagos.” Lola’s heart immediately started beating fast.
Before she could even process it properly, more notifications started entering non-stop. Another blog posted the same story, then another one. Soon, social media became flooded with rumors and speculations about Eric Johnson returning after disappearing for years. By lunchtime, reporters had already started gathering outside Johnson Holdings hoping for information while workers inside the office whispered endlessly about the scandal.
Lola felt completely overwhelmed because now everybody suddenly looked at her differently after discovering she was connected to Efe. Vanessa and the other office women who once mocked her for being single suddenly became strangely friendly. “Ah, Lola,” Vanessa said with fake smile during lunch break, “you didn’t tell us your man is from rich family.
” Lola forced small smile weakly while trying to avoid conversation. But inside her chest, anxiety kept growing stronger. Meanwhile, things became even more uncomfortable online because people started posting opinions everywhere. Some people praised Efe for surviving alone after abandoning wealth while others mocked him harshly.
Even worse, random women suddenly began claiming they knew him personally. One influencer posted old picture beside Efe claiming they once dated secretly. Another woman wrote online that Eric Johnson broke her heart years ago. Lola scrolled through the comments feeling sick because strangers now discussed Efe’s life like entertainment.
Back at home, things also became chaotic quickly. Relatives who once mocked Lola shamelessly suddenly transformed overnight into caring, loving family members. Her phone barely stopped ringing anymore. Aunties who ignored her for years now called constantly asking about their in-law. Even her mother’s voice sounded different now whenever she called.
Lola, please make sure you take good care of Effia, she kept saying softly. Good women support their men during difficult times. Lola almost laughed bitterly because only few weeks earlier these same people treated her like a failure because she was unmarried. But the most shocking change came from Auntie Shey, the same woman who once mocked Lola openly now suddenly started calling every evening pretending deep concern.
Our precious daughter, she said sweetly during one call. You know family is important during moments like this. Lola nearly dropped the phone from shock because she had never heard Auntie Shey speak to her kindly before in her entire life. One afternoon, Auntie Shey even sent voice note praying loudly for Lola and Effia’s future marriage while calling them God’s chosen couple.
Lola listened to the message in disbelief while Mabel rolled on the couch laughing uncontrollably. Money changes anointing very fast, Mabel said while wiping tears from her eyes. But while everybody else suddenly wanted connection to Effia, Effia himself only seemed more uncomfortable and restless as the days passed.
He stopped going outside freely because reporters had already started searching around different places trying to locate him properly. Several times Lola caught him staring nervously through the curtains whenever strange cars slowed down near the apartment building. Maybe I should leave, he said quietly one evening while sitting on the couch.
Lola immediately shook her head. No. Effia sighed deeply. I don’t want this mess affecting your life. Lola moved closer and held his hand softly. I already affected your life long ago, she whispered gently. Effia smiled faintly but the sadness in his eyes remained. Unknown to both of them, somebody else had already started making dangerous plans quietly.
Inside the Johnson mansion, Victoria Johnson sat inside her private study angrily reading different online articles about Eric Johnson’s possible return. Fear slowly mixed with anger inside her chest because she understood exactly what his return could destroy. For years, she had controlled everything around Chief Johnson and the company carefully, but if Eric returned fully, all that control could disappear.
“We cannot allow him come back publicly,” she told one trusted lawyer sharply during private meeting. “Not now.” The lawyer looked nervous. “Madam, people are already asking questions online.” Victoria’s face hardened dangerously. “Then we destroy him before he destroys us.” Days later, Victoria arranged secret meeting inside expensive restaurant with one beautiful social media influencer named Bianca.
Bianca was young, glamorous, manipulative, and famous online for chasing rich, powerful men publicly. Victoria looked at her coldly across the table. “I need you to get close to someone,” she said quietly while sliding envelope across the table. Bianca opened slowly and smiled after seeing a first photograph inside. “Handsome,” she muttered.
Victoria’s eyes became cold. “I don’t care whether he’s handsome. I want scandal.” Bianca looked up curiously. Victoria leaned forward slowly. “I want his relationship destroyed completely.” Meanwhile, back at Lola’s apartment, Ife remained completely unaware that danger was already moving toward him quietly while he sat comfortably on the floor arguing with Mabel about football and making Lola laugh despite all the stress surrounding them.
But deep inside Lola’s heart, fear had already started growing because for the first time since meeting Ife, she finally realized that loving him would never be simple again. The pressure surrounding Ife continued growing every single day as reporters, bloggers, and strangers online kept spreading different stories about his return while Lola struggled to protect the little piece remaining in her life.
Everywhere she went, people stared too much or whispered too loudly. Even inside Johnson Holdings, workers now discussed her relationship openly like public entertainment. Some people admired her while others mocked her secretly, claiming she was only with Ife because of money. Lola tried acting strong, but deep inside she was already emotionally exhausted.
Meanwhile, Ife himself looked increasingly frustrated because he hated the sudden attention and constantly refused interviews or public appearances. Most evenings, he simply stayed inside the apartment quietly watching television or sitting silently on the balcony lost in thoughts. One afternoon, while Lola walked inside her office, Vanessa suddenly rushed toward her holding her phone dramatically.
“Lola,” she whispered loudly, “have you seen this?” Lola collected the phone carelessly at first, but the moment her eyes landed on the screen, her entire body went cold instantly. A beautiful glamorous influencer named Bianca had just posted several pictures online beside Ife with shocking caption underneath. “I’m tired of hiding.
Yes, I’m pregnant for Eric Johnson.” Lola’s heart stopped completely. Her fingers began shaking immediately as she scrolled through the post again and again trying to understand what she was seeing. Bianca had posted pictures where she and Ife stood together smiling at one expensive lounge. Another picture showed Bianca touching Ife’s chest playfully while he laughed at something else.
Thousands of comments already filled the post within minutes. Poor Lola, men are wicked. So, billionaire son don’t cheating. That village girl don’t lose. Lola suddenly felt dizzy. Before she could even breathe properly, more blogs started reposting the story instantly. Different gossip pages began dragging Lola publicly while praising Bianca as the real woman in Ife’s life.
Some people mocked Lola cruelly saying she was only temporary girlfriend. Others insulted her appearance and claimed Ife obviously preferred classy women like Bianca. Tears slowly gathered inside Lola’s eyes as humiliation crashed heavily over her chest. She immediately called Ife repeatedly but his phone remained busy.
By the time she finally reached home later that evening, reporters had already started gathering outside the apartment building while neighbors whispered openly around the compound. Lola rushed upstairs angrily and found Ife inside the sitting room staring at his own phone with complete confusion written across his face.
“Lola, listen to me.” He started immediately but Lola interrupted him sharply. “Who is Bianca?” Ife stood up quickly. “I swear it’s not what you think.” Lola laughed painfully through tears. “Then what exactly should I think?” Ife ran a frustrated hand across his face. “I met her only few times at events years ago.
We never dated seriously.” Lola held up her phone emotionally. “She’s claiming she’s pregnant for you.” Ife looked genuinely shocked. “Pregnant?” His confusion looked real but Lola’s heart was already too broken and overwhelmed to think clearly anymore. “Everybody is insulting me online because of you.
” “Everywhere I go people are laughing at me again.” Ife moved closer desperately. “Lola, please believe me. I have not even seen Bianca in long time.” But before Lola could answer, another notification entered her phone immediately. Bianca had just posted another video crying emotionally while claiming Ife abandoned her after discovering the pregnancy.
Lola felt her chest tighten painfully again. The comments underneath were even worse now. Bloggers had already started creating dramatic headlines calling Ify heartless and Lola desperate. Unknown to both of them, Victoria Johnson sat comfortably inside her mansion secretly paying different bloggers and gossip pages to spread the scandal more aggressively online.
Every hour new fake stories appeared claiming Bianca and Ify had been secretly dating for years. Some blogs even claimed Bianca once lived inside Ify’s apartment. Victoria watched everything coldly while smiling slightly because exactly what she wanted was happening perfectly. Meanwhile, Chief Richard Johnson desperately kept trying to contact Ify privately after hearing about the scandal because he wanted to reconnect with his son before things became worse publicly.
He sent messages, called repeatedly, and even came personally to the apartment building one evening, but Ify refused. The moment Lola told him his father was downstairs, anger immediately entered his face. “Tell him to leave,” he said coldly. Lola looked at him carefully. “Maybe you should at least talk to him.” Ify shook his head bitterly.
“That man only remembers he has a son whenever scandal enters newspaper.” His voice carried deep pain and anger that Lola had never heard before. Downstairs, Chief Johnson waited sadly inside his car for almost 1 hour before finally driving away quietly. But at that moment, Lola herself was already too emotionally shattered to focus on fixing family problems because the online humiliation had become unbearable.
Everywhere she opened her phone, people insulted her. Even strangers sent cruel messages mocking her relationship with Ify. That night, after another painful argument inside the apartment, Lola finally broke down completely. “I can’t do this anymore.” she cried painfully while packing clothes into a small bag.
Ife looked terrified immediately. “Lola, please.” She shook her head while tears rolled down her face non-stop. “I’m tired.” Ife moved toward her desperately. “I swear I don’t understand what’s happening.” Lola looked at him with heartbreak all over her face. “Maybe I don’t know you as much as I thought.
” Those words hit Ife deeply and silence filled the room painfully. Few minutes later, Lola left the apartment despite Ife begging her not to go. She entered a taxi crying heavily while Ife stood helplessly outside watching the woman he loved disappear into the night. The next morning, Lola traveled quietly back to Benin hoping distance would help her escape the humiliation, pressure, and emotional pain destroying her heart.
But even inside Benin, peace still refused to come because by the time she reached her family house, everybody there had already seen Bianca’s posts online, too. Life in Benin became emotionally exhausting for Lola because instead of finding peace after leaving Lagos, she walked straight into another wave of gossip, pity, and uncomfortable questions from relatives and neighbors who had already seen the scandal involving Bianca online.
Everywhere Lola went, people whispered. Some pretended to comfort her while secretly enjoying the drama. Others spoke carelessly about how rich men always cheated. Even Auntie Shade suddenly changed behavior again and started speaking about Ife suspiciously like she had never praised him before. “I said that boy was too smooth.
” she whispered loudly one afternoon while other women listened carefully. Lola pretended not to care, but each comment stabbed painfully inside her chest because despite everything happening, part of her still wanted desperately to believe Efe was innocent. Deep down, she knew the confusion in his eyes that night did not look fake.
Meanwhile, back in Lagos, Mabel refused to believe Bianca’s story completely because something about the whole scandal felt too arranged and suspicious. The more she watched Bianca’s interviews and emotional social media videos, the more irritated she became. “This girl is acting movie.” She muttered one evening while scrolling through Bianca’s posts angrily inside Lola’s apartment.
Mabel had already become protective of both Lola and Efe because she had watched their relationship grow from fake arrangement into something real, and she refused to sit quietly while everything collapsed because of online drama. Without telling anybody, Mabel secretly began investigating Bianca herself. She started by visiting some entertainment blogs and asking questions quietly through friends who worked in media circles.
Slowly, strange inconsistencies began appearing. One blogger admitted Bianca had changed her pregnancy timeline twice during different interviews. Another person revealed Bianca was recently seen drinking heavily at nightclub despite publicly claiming she was pregnant. The more Mabel dug deeper, the more suspicious the story became. Meanwhile, Efe himself was slowly beginning to uncover darker truths surrounding his family and the company.
After Lola left, the apartment became painfully quiet and empty. For the first time in many years, Efe stopped joking almost completely. He barely slept and spent long hours sitting alone thinking about everything that had happened since his identity became public again. Slowly, anger also started growing inside him because the Bianca scandal felt too targeted and too organized to be random.
One evening, he secretly met an old trusted family accountant named Mr. Adebayo, who had once been close to Daniel before his death. During their conversation, Effe began learning disturbing information about suspicious company transactions, hidden accounts, and financial fraud connected secretly to Victoria Johnson over several years.
“Your father never paid attention properly,” Mr. Adebayo whispered carefully. “He trusted Victoria too much.” Effe’s chest tightened painfully while listening, because for the first time he began suspecting that the accusations against him years earlier might have been carefully planned from the beginning. At the Johnson mansion, Chief Richard Johnson himself also slowly started realizing how badly Victoria had manipulated the family for years.
Small details that once seemed normal now suddenly looked suspicious after Effe’s return. He remembered how Victoria constantly encouraged distance between him and Eric after Daniel died. He remembered how she always pushed him to focus on protecting the company instead of listening emotionally to his son. One night, while sitting alone in his office staring at old family pictures, Chief Johnson quietly admitted something painful to himself for the first time.
“I failed my son.” Meanwhile, another problem quietly started growing inside Jasmine’s marriage. Since returning from Benin after the wedding, Jasmine and Toby had already been arguing more often because Toby disliked how emotionally involved Jasmine remained in Lola and Effe’s situation.
At first, the arguments were small, but gradually Toby’s jealousy and insecurity became more obvious. “Your sister’s drama is too much,” he complained angrily one evening while Jasmine defended Lola emotionally. “Not everything is about money and scandals,” Jasmine snapped back. Toby looked irritated immediately. “You and Lola act like Effe is some saint.
” Jasmine became quiet briefly before speaking softly. At least he made her happy. That statement caused another serious argument because Toby secretly hated how much Jasmine admired Efe’s emotional support towards Lola. Their marriage slowly started developing cracks beneath the surface. Back in Benin, Lola spent most evenings sitting quietly outside Mama Rebecca’s compound unable to stop thinking about Efe despite all the pain surrounding his name now.
Sometimes she replayed their conversations during rainy nights in Lagos. Sometimes she remembered the way he defended her publicly when everybody mocked her. Other times she remembered how gently he played with the children at the orphanage. The more she tried forcing herself to hate him, the more her heart resisted.
One evening while sitting outside watching sunset quietly, Mama Rebecca slowly sat beside her and looked at her carefully. “You love that boy.” The old woman said softly. Lola’s eyes filled with tears immediately. She tried denying it weakly, but Mama Rebecca only smiled knowingly. “Love is painful when fear enters it.
” That night Lola cried quietly alone inside her room because for the first time she fully admitted the truth to herself. She genuinely loved Efe. Not because of his family name, not because of money, but because somewhere between the fake relationship, the laughter, the chaos, and the hidden pain, he had slowly become home to her heart.
Meanwhile in Lagos, Mabel’s investigation finally reached shocking breakthrough. Late one afternoon, she secretly met one nurse working inside small private clinic where Bianca recently visited. The nurse nervously revealed that Bianca had never actually tested positive for pregnancy. Mabel’s heart almost stopped immediately. After pressing further carefully, she finally obtained proof showing Bianca paid for fake pregnancy documents and ultrasound images.
Mabel stared at the evidence in complete shock while anger rushed through her chest. “This girl lied about everything.” she whispered. Then suddenly, another terrible realization entered her mind. If Bianca’s pregnancy was fake, then somebody powerful had organized the entire scandal. And immediately, Mabel knew exactly who that person probably was.
Everything started exploding so fast that within just a few days, the Johnson family scandal completely took over social media, television programs, blogs, and gossip conversations across Lagos. Because the truth Mabel discovered about Bianca’s fake pregnancy finally leaked publicly and instantly turned the entire story upside down.
It started when one anonymous account released screenshots of payment sent secretly to Bianca from accounts connected to Victoria Johnson’s personal assistant. Then another blog released copies of the fake clinic reports proving Bianca had never actually been pregnant at all. Suddenly, the same bloggers who had spent days attacking Efe and mocking Lola quickly changed direction and started dragging Bianca mercilessly instead.
Videos of Bianca crying online became national embarrassment overnight as people accused her of chasing money and fame. Reporters immediately surrounded Bianca outside her apartment while she tried hiding her face from cameras, but the damage had already spread too far. By morning, another shocking audio recording leaked online where Bianca’s friend secretly confronted her about lying publicly.
Inside the recording, Bianca angrily admitted Victoria Johnson promised her huge money if she helped destroy Efe’s image before he could reconnect fully with the company and his father. Lagos exploded instantly. Meanwhile, inside the Johnson mansion, Victoria completely lost control as reporters flooded outside the gate while television stations discussed the scandal non-stop.
Chief Richard Johnson sat inside his office in complete disbelief listening to the leaked audio repeatedly while pain and shame filled his face. For years he trusted Victoria completely, defended her decisions, and ignored his own son’s emotional suffering because he believed she was protecting the family. But now every hidden lie slowly started coming into the open one after another.
“How long?” he asked quietly one evening while confronting Victoria inside their living room. “How long have you been manipulating this family?” Victoria immediately became defensive and angry. “Everything I did was for this family.” she shouted. But Chief Johnson no longer looked convinced. For the first time in years the illusion surrounding Victoria had started breaking completely.
Meanwhile, Efe himself had become consumed by painful anger and confusion after learning more shocking truths connected to Daniel’s death years earlier. Through old company records, hidden messages, and conversations with former staff members, Efe slowly discovered that Victoria’s manipulation went far deeper than anybody imagined.
Years earlier, before Daniel died, Daniel had secretly uncovered suspicious company transactions connected to accounts Victoria controlled quietly behind Chief Johnson’s back. According to what Efe discovered, Daniel planned exposing the fraud to their father, but before he could do so, terrible family conflict suddenly exploded inside the house.
Arguments became frequent, tension became unbearable. Then one night Daniel died during mysterious car accident after leaving the house emotionally upset following another serious argument involving Victoria and company money. Officially it was called accident, but now Efe began suspecting there were truths nobody ever fully investigated properly because too many things suddenly looked suspicious.
The realization shattered him emotionally because Daniel was not only his younger brother, but also the person he loved most inside the family. One evening, Effa sat quietly alone inside the apartment staring at old picture of himself and Daniel as children while tears rolled slowly down his face. “I failed him.
” He whispered painfully to himself. But the biggest emotional blow came when Chief Johnson himself finally admitted his own mistakes openly during emotional conversation with Effa. After days of trying repeatedly to see him, Effa finally agreed reluctantly to meet his father privately inside one quiet restaurant after closing hours. The moment Chief Johnson saw his son sitting across from him again after so many years, tears immediately entered his eyes.
For several seconds, neither man spoke because too much pain already existed between them. Finally, Chief Johnson lowered his head heavily and whispered brokenly, “I should have protected you.” Effa remained silent while pain tightened inside his chest. Chief Johnson’s voice shook emotionally as he continued speaking.
“I failed you as father. I listened to everybody except my own son.” Effa’s eyes slowly filled with tears, too, because despite all the anger he carried, hearing his father finally admit the truth still hurt deeply. Meanwhile, inside Johnson Holdings, company board members slowly began turning against Victoria after more financial irregularities connected to her account surfaced publicly.
Several directors demanded immediate investigation while investors started panicking about the growing scandal. Reporters camped permanently outside the Johnson mansion hoping for statement while online discussions became even more chaotic daily. Everywhere, people now talked about betrayal, hidden family secrets, and the missing billionaire son who returned to expose the truth.
In Benin, Lola followed everything quietly from her phone while emotions battled heavily inside her heart because the more truth surfaced, the clearer it became that Effia had truly been deeply hurt and betrayed for years. One evening after another emotional conversation with Mama Rebecca, Lola finally realized she could no longer continue running away because despite all the chaos surrounding Effia’s life, her love for him remained stronger than her fear.
“If you truly love somebody,” Mama Rebecca told her softly while holding her hand, “you don’t abandon them when storms come.” Those words stayed inside her heart the entire night. By the next morning, she had already made her decision. She packed her bags quietly while her mother watched nervously nearby.
“You’re going back to Lagos?” Mrs. Daniels asked carefully. Lola nodded slowly. “I can’t leave him alone in all this.” Her mother sighed deeply but said nothing more because even she now understood how serious Lola’s feelings had become. Several hours later, Lola finally arrived back in Lagos feeling nervous and emotional as she stood outside her apartment building again after days away.
Her heart beat fast while she slowly opened the door and stepped inside quietly. Effia sat alone on the couch looking exhausted and emotionally drained while TV news discussed another scandal involving Victoria in the background. The moment he looked up and saw Lola standing there with her bags, shock immediately filled his face.
For few seconds, neither of them spoke. Then slowly, Lola dropped her bag and walked towards him quietly before wrapping her arms tightly around him. Effia held her immediately like man terrified she might disappear again. Tears entered both of their eyes while silence filled the room softly.
Finally, Lola whispered against his chest, “I’m here now.” And for the first time in many painful days, Effia finally allowed himself to breathe again. The entire Johnson family scandal continued spreading across Lagos like wildfire as television stations, bloggers, and newspapers discussed Victoria Johnson’s fraud and manipulation every single day.
While reporters remained permanently outside the Johnson mansion waiting for updates about the missing billionaire son who had finally returned after years of silence. Everywhere Ife went now, people recognized him immediately. But despite all the attention surrounding him, the pain inside his chest only grew heavier because the more truth came out, the more he realized how deeply his own family had failed him when he needed love and protection the most.
Lola stayed close to him through everything, refusing to leave his side again no matter how difficult things became. Sometimes, she woke up at night and found him sitting quietly alone staring at old photographs of himself and Daniel while lost in painful memories. Other times, she noticed him struggling silently with anger anytime television programs discussed Victoria’s betrayal publicly.
One afternoon, Chief Richard Johnson finally requested another private meeting with Ife. This time, begging him emotionally not to refuse. At first, Ife ignored the messages completely. But after Lola quietly encouraged him to face his father honestly instead of carrying the pain forever, he finally agreed reluctantly.
The meeting happened inside one quiet conference room at Johnson Holdings after work hours where only Johnson and Ife sat facing each other across the long table while silence filled the room heavily. For several seconds, neither man spoke because too much pain already existed between them. Chief Johnson looked older and more tired now compared to the powerful, confident businessman everybody once feared.
His face carried deep regret and emotional exhaustion from everything happening around the family. Finally, Ife broke the silence first. “Do you know what hurt me the most?” he asked quietly while staring directly at his father. Chief Johnson lowered his eyes slowly. Ife’s voice became heavier with emotion as years of hidden pain finally started pouring out openly.
“Not Victoria, not the scandal, not even the accusations.” His eyes slowly filled with tears. “It was you.” Chief Johnson looked up immediately while pain entered his face. Ife continued speaking emotionally. “I lost my brother. I was drowning emotionally. Everybody around me turned against me. And instead of standing beside me, my own father treated me like a criminal.
” Tears rolled down Ife’s face now openly. “I needed love from you. I needed somebody to believe me, but all you cared about was protecting company image.” Chief Johnson’s body shook slightly as he listened silently. Ife stood up angrily now unable to control the emotions anymore. “Do you know how painful it is to feel unwanted inside your own family?” His voice cracked heavily.
“I disappeared because I truly believed nobody would miss me.” Chief Johnson suddenly broke down completely. For the first time, tears rushed down his face openly while he covered his mouth painfully. “I’m sorry.” he whispered brokenly. “God forgive me. I’m so sorry.” Ife stood there breathing heavily while years of buried pain exploded out of him finally.
Chief Johnson slowly looked at his son again through tears. “My greed destroyed this family.” he admitted painfully. “I became too obsessed with protecting the company, money, and reputation. I stopped paying attention to my own children.” His voice shook deeply. “By the time I realized what was happening, I had already lost both my sons.
” Silence filled the room again while father and son sat emotionally broken before each other. Meanwhile, outside the family drama, Victoria Johnson herself had already started panicking desperately because investigations into the company fraud kept getting worse daily. Several hidden accounts connected to her had already been exposed publicly, and police officials quietly started monitoring her movements.
Realizing the walls were closing around her, Victoria secretly arranged plans to escape Nigeria with large amount of stolen company money hidden inside foreign accounts. Late one night, while most people believed she remained the mansion, Victoria quietly left for the airport wearing dark glasses and carrying small expensive luggage hoping to disappear before authorities could stop her.
But unbeknownst to her, investigators had already received information about her plans. Just as Victoria attempted checking in for international flight, security officers suddenly surrounded her publicly inside the airport. Shock spread across the terminal immediately as travelers watched police officers stop the once powerful woman while cameras from journalists nearby quickly started recording the scene. “Mrs.
Victoria Johnson, you are under investigation for financial fraud.” one officer announced firmly. Victoria immediately started shouting angrily and demanding lawyers, but within minutes videos of her arrest had already flooded social media everywhere. Back in Lagos, another unexpected problem suddenly appeared when Femi Lawson returned shamelessly into Lola’s life after seeing the Johnson family scandal unfold publicly.
Femi had been watching everything online quietly, and after realizing Lola still remained close to Efe despite all the chaos, jealousy slowly started growing inside him again because deep down he never expected Lola to move on emotionally without him. One afternoon, while Lola left work heading toward nearby restaurant to buy food, Femi suddenly blocked her path near the parking lot wearing expensive suit and fake emotional expression.
“Lola, please can we talk?” he asked softly. Lola looked at him coldly immediately. “About what?” Femi sighed dramatically. “I’ve been worried about you.” Lola almost laughed from disbelief. Femi continued speaking smoothly while following beside her. “Honestly, this whole Efe situation opened my eyes.
You deserve better than all this drama.” Lola stopped walking slowly and looked at him carefully, already irritated. “Excuse me?” Femi smiled weakly. “I made a mistake losing you before, but maybe this is our second chance.” Lola stood speechless for few seconds before suddenly laughing loudly in disbelief right there inside the parking lot.
Several workers nearby turned to look immediately. “Second chance?” she repeated mockingly. Femi nodded confidently. “I still care about you.” Lola’s expression immediately hardened. “You care because you suddenly realized the woman you mocked can still be loved properly.” Femi’s face tightened awkwardly. Lola stepped closer with anger slowly rising inside her chest.
“When you humiliated me publicly during Jasmine’s wedding, where was this care?” People nearby now openly watched the confrontation while Femi looked uncomfortable. Lola continued sharply. “You left me because you thought I wasn’t worth enough. Now you want to return because another man showed me love publicly.
” Femi tried speaking again, but Lola raised her hand immediately. “Please don’t embarrass yourself.” Her voice became calm but painfully firm. “The version of me that once cried over you is dead.” Femi stood there speechless while several nearby workers pretended not to watch openly. Then, Lola looked him directly in the eyes one final time and said quietly, “And for the record, Efe fought for me when everybody mocked me.
You only returned because you saw another man value what you threw away.” Without waiting for response, Lola turned around and walked away confidently, while leaving Femi standing there completely humiliated in public. And for the first time since their breakup years earlier, Lola finally felt truly free from that chapter of her life forever.
After months of pain, scandal, betrayal, and emotional chaos, things slowly began calming down around the Johnson family as the truth about Victoria’s crimes became clearer publicly, and investigations continued quietly without the constant madness that once everybody. For the first time in many years, Effe finally started breathing like someone no longer carrying the entire weight of the world alone on his shoulders.
Although the emotional scars inside him still remained deep, something important had changed. He no longer felt completely abandoned anymore because slowly, little by little, real healing had finally started entering his life again. Chief Richard Johnson also changed greatly after everything that happened. The proud businessman who once cared more about protecting company image now spent most of his time trying to repair the relationship he destroyed with his son.
At first, things between him and Effe remained awkward because years of pain could not disappear overnight, but slowly they began reconnecting properly. Sometimes they sat together quietly discussing old memories about Daniel. Other times, Chief Johnson simply listened while Effe spoke honestly about the years he spent suffering alone after leaving home.
One afternoon while walking together near the company garden, Chief Johnson stopped suddenly and looked at Effe emotionally. “I know I cannot change the past,” he said softly, “but if you allow me, I want to become your father again.” Effe remained quiet for a few seconds before finally nodding slowly with tears gathering inside his eyes.
It was not full forgiveness yet, but it was the beginning of something real again between them. Meanwhile, Effe himself started focusing on rebuilding parts of his life that still mattered deeply to him. One Saturday morning, he secretly returned to Mama Bisi’s orphanage in Yaba after staying away during all the public scandal.
The moment the children saw him entering through the gate, they screamed excitedly and rushed toward him happily while hugging him tightly. Some of them even cried because they missed him badly. Lola stood nearby watching emotionally as Efe laughed freely with the children again for the first time in many weeks. Mama Bisi smiled warmly while shaking her head.
“These children refused to stop asking for you.” She said softly. Efe looked around the small crowded building quietly before suddenly asking Mama Bisi to follow him outside. A few minutes later, he handed her one envelope silently. Mama Bisi opened it slowly and gasped in shock after seeing the documents inside. Efe had secretly bought a bigger building for the orphanage along with enough money to renovate it properly and improve the children’s lives completely.
Tears instantly filled Mama Bisi’s eyes as she held his hands emotionally. “God will bless you, my son.” She whispered through tears. Lola watched the moment quietly from distance because no matter how much wealth or attention surrounded Efe now, his heart still remained soft in the places that truly mattered.
As days passed, the relationship between Lola and Efe also became deeper and more honest than ever before because finally, there were no more lies, fake acting, or pretending between them anymore. One evening during quiet dinner on the apartment balcony while cool Lagos breeze moved softly around them, Lola suddenly looked at Efe carefully and smiled faintly.
“You know something funny?” She asked softly. Efe looked curiously. Lola laughed quietly. “I hired you because I was scared of being lonely.” Efe smiled slowly while holding her hand gently. “And I accepted because I needed money. Both of them laughed softly before silence settled warmly between them.
Then, Efe’s expression slowly became serious as he stared into her eyes deeply. “But somewhere along the line,” he whispered softly, “you became the best thing that ever happened to me.” Lola’s eyes immediately filled with tears while her heart beat painfully with emotion. She squeezed his hand gently before whispering honestly, “I love you, Efe.
” For a few seconds, he simply stared at her quietly like man hearing something precious he thought life would never give him again. Then, he smiled emotionally and touched her face softly. “I love you, too, Lola.” And for the first time since everything began, there was no pretending attached to the words anymore.
Meanwhile, another painful truth slowly unfolded inside Jasmine’s marriage. Because the more time passed, the clearer it became that Toby’s controlling behavior was becoming worse instead of better. He constantly complained about Jasmine defending Lola and spending time with her family too often.
He monitored her movement excessively and became angry whenever she disagreed with him publicly. One evening, after another serious argument where Toby insulted Lola harshly again and demanded Jasmine stop behaving like independent woman, Jasmine finally broke down emotionally and realized she could no longer continue living inside constant control and emotional pressure.
Few days later, she quietly packed some bags and returned temporarily to her mother’s house. Despite Toby begging afterwards. For the first time, Jasmine fully understood how much damage family pressure about marriage had caused both her and Lola for years. Slowly, even the Daniels family itself began facing uncomfortable truth about how badly they mistreated Lola simply because she remained unmarried for so long.
The same relatives who once mocked her openly now felt ashamed remembering their cruel words after seeing how loyal and loving Lola remained even through Effiong’s family scandals and public humiliation. One Sunday during emotional family gathering in Benin where everybody came together quietly after many months of tension and embarrassment, Mama Rebecca slowly stood up with tears in her old eyes holding Lola’s hands gently before everybody.
Silence filled the room immediately because the old woman rarely cried openly. “Forgive us.” Mama Rebecca whispered painfully. Lola looked shocked immediately. Mama Rebecca’s voice shook emotionally as she continued speaking. “We made you feel incomplete because no man married you.” Tears rolled slowly down Lola’s face while other family members lowered their heads in shame.
Mama Rebecca squeezed her hands tightly before saying, “But you were already complete before any man entered your life.” Several women inside the room started crying softly while even Mrs. Daniels wiped tears from her eyes quietly. Lola hugged her grandmother emotionally while years of hidden pain slowly began leaving her heart at last.
And as Effiong stood nearby watching the family slowly heal together, he realized something beautiful and unexpected had happened through all the chaos, heartbreak, lies, and suffering. For the first time in many years, he finally understood what a real family truly felt like again. ; Several months after the storms, scandals, betrayals, heartbreak, and emotional pain that almost destroyed them completely, peace finally began settling gently into Lola and Effiong’s lives like soft morning sunlight after long heavy rain.
Things were no longer perfect, but they were finally real. The chaos surrounding the Johnson family had reduced greatly after Victoria’s arrest and the company slowly stabilized again while Chief Richard Johnson worked hard every day trying to rebuild both his family and himself properly. Jasmine also looked happier and stronger after leaving her toxic marriage because for the first time she finally chose peace over pressure.
Meanwhile, Lola’s own life changed in ways she never imagined possible because the same woman who once cried herself to sleep believing nobody would ever truly love her now woke up every morning beside a man who looked at her like she was the safest place in the world. Yet, despite all the healing around them, Efe had been behaving strangely for almost 2 weeks.
Sometimes he disappeared secretly making suspicious phone calls outside. Other times he smiled at his phone quietly whenever Lola entered the room before quickly hiding it. Lola became frustrated and suspicious immediately. “If you’re planning nonsense again, I’ll beat you.” she warned one evening while folding clothes inside the bedroom.
Efe laughed loudly and raised both hands innocently. “I’m reformed now.” But his suspicious behavior only became worse. One Saturday morning, Efe suddenly woke Lola up very early and insisted she dress nicely because he wanted taking her somewhere important. Lola complained sleepily throughout the journey because Efe refused explaining anything.
“At least tell me where we are going.” she kept asking while sitting inside the car beside him. But Efe only smiled proudly and said, “Patience is beautiful.” After almost 1 hour driving through Lagos roads, they finally arrived near beautiful beachfront area decorated with flowers, lights, white chairs, and soft music playing gently beside the ocean.
Lola blinked repeatedly in confusion as she stepped out of the car slowly. Then suddenly she froze completely. Standing across the beach smiling warmly were Mabel, Jasmine, Mama Rebecca, Chief Johnson, the orphanage children from Yaba, Mrs. Daniels, and several people she loved deeply. Everybody clapped happily the moment they saw her.
Lola covered her mouth immediately in shock as tears rushed into her eyes. “Efe.” She whispered emotionally while turning toward him. Effe smiled softly and held her hand gently. “You once hired me to pretend for one weekend.” He said quietly. “Today, I want to become your real husband forever.
” Lola immediately burst into tears while everybody around them clapped and laughed emotionally. Mabel screamed loudly and nearly fell while dancing excitedly with the children from the orphanage. Mama Rebecca cried openly while thanking God repeatedly. Lola stood there overwhelmed completely as realization slowly entered her chest. This was their wedding.
A real wedding, not fake, not acting, real. The ceremony itself became deeply emotional and beautiful beside the ocean while soft wind moved through the decorations and sunset slowly painted the sky orange and gold behind them. Lola looked stunning in her white dress while Effe could barely stop staring at her throughout the ceremony.
Like a man still shocked life had finally given him something beautiful again after so many painful years. During the vows, both of them cried openly while holding hands tightly. But the moment that completely broke everybody emotionally came during Effe’s wedding speech. He stood quietly for a few seconds holding microphone while looking directly at Lola with tears already gathering inside his eyes.
The beach became completely silent. Then softly he began speaking. “There was a time I stopped believing in family.” He said slowly. “I stopped believing in home. I stopped believing anybody could truly stay beside me after seeing my broken parts.” Lola’s tears rolled down immediately. Effe smiled emotionally while staring at her.
“Then one tired woman hired one foolish man wearing bathroom slippers to pretend for one weekend.” Everybody laughed softly through tears. Effe’s voice shook slightly as he continued. “She hired me for one weekend, but somehow she became the home I stopped believing existed. At that point, almost everybody was crying openly, especially Lola, who completely broke down emotionally while covering her face with both hands.
Even Chief Johnson wiped tears quietly while Mama Rebecca held Jasmine tightly. The orphanage children clapped excitedly while Mabel screamed, “Bathroom slippers finally won!” causing everybody to laugh through their tears again. After the ceremony ended, the beach became filled with dancing, laughter, music, and celebration as both families slowly mixed together peacefully for the first time without shame, secrets, or pressure controlling them anymore.
Chief Johnson danced awkwardly with Mama Rebecca while Mabel dragged unwilling guests onto the dance floor forcefully. Lola laughed freely while resting her head against Efia’s chest as soft music played around them and the ocean waves moved gently nearby. For the first time in many years, both of them finally felt safe emotionally.
Later that night, after most guests had left and the beach became quieter, Lola and Efia stood together alone near the water, holding hands silently while looking at the ocean. “Can you believe all this started because my family refused to let me attend wedding alone?” Lola asked softly while laughing. Efia smiled and kissed her forehead gently.
“Best accidental job of my life.” Both of them laughed quietly before holding each other closely while the cool ocean breeze surrounded them peacefully. And slowly, after all the lies, scandals, betrayals, heartbreak, loneliness, pressure, and pain they survived together, true love finally won at last. The lesson of this story is that marriage does not define a person’s value, real love cannot be forced by pressure or money, and sometimes the people society looks down on are secretly carrying the purest hearts of all.
Never judge people by their relationship status, appearance, or past because behind every smile, there may be hidden pain. And sometimes, the person who enters your life unexpectedly can become the greatest blessing you never saw coming. Thank you for following Lula and Ethi’s beautiful journey.
