Why Execution Gallows Made From Wood JJ

For hundreds of years, the gallows was one of the most recognizable symbols of execution. From medieval public execution grounds to the enclosed prison yards of the 19th century, the basic structure have remained surprisingly similar. A heavy horizontal beam supported above the ground, a rope suspended from it, and the condemned prisoner positioned underneath.

Although execution methods and gallows designs did change considerably over the centuries, one feature remained remarkably consistent. Gallows were usually constructed largely from wood. The simple reason was that wood was readily available. Before the Industrial Revolution made iron and steel much cheaper and easier to manufacture in large quantities, timber was one of the most important construction materials in Europe.

Houses, roofs, bridges, carts, ships, scaffolding, and countless other structures were made from wood. Almost every town had carpenters who understood how to work with it, meaning that authorities did not need specialist engineers to construct the gallows. Wood was also relatively inexpensive. This was very important because gallows were not always permanent structures.

In medieval and early modern Britain, executions might take place at an established execution grounds, but scaffolds and other pieces of equipment could still be constructed, repaired, altered, or dismantled as required. There was little reason to build an expensive iron structure when several substantial wooden beams could perform exactly the same function.

Despite appearing simple, wooden gallows could be extremely strong. A very thick oak beam was easily capable of supporting the weight required during a hanging. The structure needed to support not only the condemned prisoner, but sometimes several prisoners at the same time. In later periods, it might also need to support a platform, execution officials, and the mechanical equipment associated with a drop.

One of the most famous examples was the Tyburn Gallows in London. Tyburn became London’s principal public execution site for centuries. It’s famous Gallows, commonly known as the Tyburn Tree, consisted of three wooden uprights supporting horizontal beams arranged in a triangular shape. The unusual design allowed several prisoners to be hanged at the same time.

Large numbers of spectators gathered around Tyburn to witness executions until public hangings there ended in 1783. The ability to dismantle or replace wooden structures was another major advantage. Timber could easily be cut into suitable lengths, transported very well, too, and assembled using established carpentry techniques.

If part of a Gallows became rotten or damaged, an individual beam could simply be replaced. A completely new structure could also be built without the enormous expense associated with stone or iron construction. Wood became particularly useful as hanging technology grew even more complicated. Early hangings did not necessarily involve the sophisticated trapdoor that people commonly associate with the Gallows today.

In many cases, prisoners were placed on carts, ladders, or platforms, then deprived of their supports. Death frequently resulted from strangulation rather than rapid neck fractures later sought by executioners. During the 18th and 19th centuries, British hanging practices gradually changed.

The drop became increasingly important. The condemned person stood above an opening before being allowed to fall. Eventually, this developed into the long drop method, in which the distance of the fall was expertly calculated according to the prisoner’s physical characteristics. The intention was to produce a rapid fracture dislocation of the upper cervical spine rather than prolonged strangulation.

Wood was particularly suitable for constructing these increasingly elaborate gallows. A wooden platform could contain hinged trapdoors beneath the condemned prisoner’s feet. These doors were supported by a mechanical catch connected to a lever. When the executioner opened the mechanism, the trapdoors opened and the prisoner fell through.

However, this did not mean that later gallows were made entirely from wood. Iron and eventually steel became increasingly important components. Hinges, bolts, catches, brackets, and other mechanical parts were commonly associated and manufactured from metal. The rope could also be attached to strong metal fittings connected to the overhead beam.

The result was effectively a combination of traditional carpentry and mechanical engineering. The large structural components could remain wooden because timber was perfectly capable of performing that role, while metal was used for components requiring greater precision or resistance to wear. There was, therefore, little incentive to construct an entire gallows from iron or steel.

Execution authorities were generally interested in reliability rather than appearance or technological sophistication for its own sake. If a substantial wooden beam could safely carry the required load, replacing it with expensive metal beams offered relatively little advantage. Wooden gallows also belonged to a much broader tradition of scaffold construction.

Public executions were frequently staged on wooden platforms so spectators could see what was happening. Beheadings, hangings, and other punishments might therefore involve temporary wooden scaffolds constructed specifically for the occasion. The word scaffold consequently became closely associated with the execution itself.

As executions moved behind prison walls during the 19th century, the gallows became less of a public monument and more of a sophisticated piece of prison equipment. In Britain, public executions ended in 1868. Gallows were subsequently installed within prisons, where designs became increasingly standardized and carefully controlled.

Yet, wood remained useful even in this more technological age. Gallows did not need to be enormous metal machines. Heavy timber beams combined with iron fittings and a reliable trapdoor mechanism could perform the task effectively. The traditional wooden gallows was therefore not simply the result of primitive technology.

It was an example of practical engineering. Timber was cheap, widely available, strong, repairable, and easy to shape. Carpenters already possessed the skills required to construct substantial wooden structures, while damaged components could be replaced without rebuilding the entire gallows. For centuries, there was simply no compelling reason to abandon it.

Even as hanging developed from a relatively crude method of strangulation into a carefully calculated execution procedure, the basic wooden framework remained useful. Beneath the grim symbolism of the gallows was a straightforward practical reality. Wood did the job, and it did it cheaply, reliably, and effectively.
