And those capabilities will make a strategic difference, but it doesn’t make the fighting easier or the losses more bearable. Caldwell nodded slowly. Fair assessment.

The strategic picture is what matters, though. Today, your squadron and the American Mustang Groups escorted bombers to a target 200 m deep in Germany and brought most of them home. Last year, that mission would have been impossible. Next month, we’ll reach Berlin. By summer, there won’t be a target in Germany beyond our reach.

That’s what the Mustang does. It changes what’s possible. And the cost will be high. War always is, but we’re bringing the fight to Germany in ways they can’t counter. Their industrial base, their oil refineries, their transportation networks, all vulnerable now. The Mustang doesn’t end the war, but it gives us the tool to do so.
