He hired his sister, who was 16 and had been running his books for 2 years, as his office manager, which she accepted with the air of someone formalizing an arrangement that had already been in place for some time. By the end of 1989, Bontrager Agricultural Castings had 37 regular customers across Hardin County and four adjacent counties.
It had produced castings for John Deere, International Harvester, Allis-Chalmers, and Oliver Equipment. It had a binder of metallurgical test results from the Cedar Rapids lab that was now 3 in thick.
