They Accused Their Daughter in Law Of Stealing From The Family… #story #folklore #tales – Ty
If only they had known what Nkem was carrying inside her handbag that Sunday afternoon, they would not have opened their mouths the way they did. But, they did not know. And by the time they understood, it was already too late because Nkem has learned something. Two years before even the story started, she has learned some truths are wasted if you release them too early.
A truth shouted in anger gets buried under anger. Nobody will even remember the truth. They will only remember the shouting. But, when a truth was released calmly at the right time, in front of the right people, that truth cannot be argued with. Nkem had been waiting for 14 months for the right time.
She did not know exactly when it will arrive, but when it did, ; ; everybody was shocked. Nkem married into the Okafor family 9 years ago. The family owned a wholesale provision store in Alaba Market, Lagos. ; [snorts] ; Her father-in-law had built it from nothing. And the man has three sons.
The first is Dozie, which is Nkem’s husband. The second is Emeka, married, and the last is Kelechi, also married. Because of how big the business was, the father had to assign each of his sons the role they will play in the business. And they were all doing well. But, unfortunately, Nkem’s father-in-law died. And when he passed, the business was automatically transferred to the three brothers, Dozie, Emeka, and Kelechi.
No one argued about it because they all knew that the business is supposed to fall on their shoulder and they are to continue the legacy. The business is a very big one, a minimart that is popularly known in Alaba Market. After Nkem’s father-in-law was buried, they called a family meeting, the three brothers without the wives.
Dozie was the first person to speak up. My brothers, you people have seen what has happened though. Papa is dead now. And we need to continue his legacy by taking care of that business. That business is the main reason why all of us are eating today, living comfortably. We know we don’t live in the same house, but you can see that our father made sure we were comfortable, that he had to build houses for us around him.
He wanted us to feel the love of brotherhood. And that has maintained our life all this while. But now that he’s gone, we need to continue the business. And we do not want any issue to come from anybody. That is why we are going to be very transparent in each of our roles. Everyone has his section they are going to take care of.
I, Dozie, I and my wife, we have always been handling the accounting section. And also the frozen food section. You, Emeka, you have always been managing the provision section, the milk, the the the the tea and everything. And you, Dozie, you have always been managing the drink section. We are going to continue that way.
But since my wife is the one that do the general accounting, you all have to be transparent about everything we need to do. As the first son, I will be the one to be approving payment since papa is no longer available. Anything that need to be refilled, anything that needs to be replaced, any of the products that are finished should be brought to my notice.
I will sign out the money before it will be given. My wife, every ending of the month will come here with transparency and tell you people how much we made, how much gain we made, and how everything is going. Dozie, now ask them one simple question. Do anybody have any objection? If there is anything I said here you do not like, please come forward. Let us tackle it.
Do not go home and start murmuring. Do not go to your own house and start thinking on how to jeopardize this business. If this business go down, all of us we go down, and we’ll go down to zero. Please, I beg you in the name of God and our late father, anything you don’t like, any attitude you don’t like from me, from my wife, from anybody in this household, please let’s settle it amicably as family.
That is all I ask. If you have questions, you are free to ask. Dozie looked at Emeka to know if he has any question, but none. He looked at Kelechi. Do you have any question? Kelechi said no. He’s actually fine with the arrangement. Let them continue with the way things have been working, but the money approval for anything replacement will come from him, Dozie, being the first son.
The father had already told them. So, they are following their father’s wish. They dismissed that meeting, and Dozie, Emeka, and Kelechi went back to their houses. When Dozie came back, he came asked him about the meeting and how it went. Dozie was happy. They were all cooperating. In fact, I do not have any issue.
I already told them that you will handle the general accounting since you are really good with that. And none of them said no. So, I believe everything should be in place with time. And please, my wife, if you notice anything, anything that is a call for concern, let me know. We want transparency in this business. I’m not saying we’re not going to encounter problem, but let the problem not come from us, okay? Ikem was happy and promised her husband that she would do her best.
Meanwhile, Emeka went home and told his wife what they said in the meeting. And she started frowning. His wife, Lucy, turns out to be a Gen Z body. She does not work. She stays from home morning till night. And yet, they don’t have children. But Lucy believed that a man should provide and a woman is a rear core.
She’s there to eat and enjoy her life. She started putting doubt in Emeka’s mind. Hmm. So, your brother’s wife will be the one that will be doing accounting. I hope she will not steal money, oh. I hope they will not be cornering money by the side. This one your father is no longer alive. See, I don’t trust all these sister-in-law, brother’s wife thing, oh.
You guys need to open your eyes. Instead of monthly review of accounts, let’s have her do it weekly. Transparency is key. And babe, I can equally do the accounting stuff. I’m not doing anything at home. Maybe you should put me there, you know? I’m really good with money and I can be able to do accounting, too. Two of us can manage it, though.
I and Ikem, we can manage it, if possible. And I’ll be getting paid, instead of me being at home doing nothing. Uh see, see, Lucy, forget about you being good with money. You’re only good in spending. You’re not good with anything accounting. While my father was alive, it has always been her.
In came as always been the one doing accounting for my father. And my father had never complained or said any money was missing. So, calm down. Chill. We’ll look into it. If there is any sort of a corner corner or they’re trying to dope us, I would know. I know the money we make on a monthly basis in that company. Do not worry yourself. As for you, if you want to work, you go and look for work outside.
I cannot involve you in my family affairs so that you will not bring embarrassment. You only know how to spend. Only for you to come out to come out and wash your dirty linen outside. I beg, Lucy. Forget about it. Lucy angrily walked out on him. Since the blackmail did not work. As for Kelechi, immediately he landed, his wife, Obianuju, was seated waiting.
How far? How did the meeting go? Kelechi had doubts, but he could not express it. He had always been the one that is called doubting Thomas in the house. Always conny, looking for sharp sharp and sharpest way to make money. Immediately he landed and the wife asked him how the meeting went. His face changed.
See, I don’t know, but it be like say this Inkem woman, the woman really shamed everyone in this house. I was thinking that my brother will give me the accountant to be handling since papa is no longer alive. I wasn’t expecting his wife to still be in the family business. She’s an outsider. I’m supposed to be the one handling it. Obianuju looked at him.
If you want to be the one handling the accounting, then what are you doing here? You did a meeting with your brothers. Why didn’t you tell them that you want to partake in handling the accounting side? Eh, it’s because I don’t want to be like the black sheep. They’ve already given me the drinks. The drink part of the of the section.
I should be the one taking care of it. Sales and money coming from there. I will not go and be submitting it to a woman that I am older than. Who does that? That was when Obianuju dropped the bomb. I have told you you should be keeping money aside so that we can start up our own business. Our own wine and drink business.
That business that has money in it. You already know. With the sales we are making in that shop, the money that is coming on our hand on a monthly basis. Did I even say monthly basis? On a daily basis, we make millions from that drink business. That business is one of the biggest in all the section in that supermarket.
I’ve told you. Be saving up money. Be taking small money out out. Even when your father was alive, I’ve been telling you. But you are foolish husband. You don’t listen. You can give me part of the money. I will go to another location and start up a drink business. Even if this family business collapse tomorrow, it will not affect us.
We already free and will stand on our own. But your betting habit will not allow me do what I want to do. Anytime you see small money, you go and put it inside bet and lose it. Eh? Imagine all the millions you’ve lost in betting. I would have used it to open a big boutique by now. Foolish husband.
Do I even know why I married you? You are the most handsome of all, but still you are the most senseless of all. Please, Kelechi, I beg you in the name of God. Now that your father is not alive anymore and he’s no longer strict with supervising things, I use God beg you. If you put money in betting again, I will tear this house apart.
The whole house will know what is going on. I beg you. We have children to feed. Kelechi, four children, four. It is us that gave birth to the highest amount of children in this house. Open your eyes, yo, and make sure that you do not mess up this time around. 6 months after that meeting, life continued. Business continued.
Anunka was still keeping record of everything that is going on, the things they buy, the one replaced, the one they bring in newly. She was really diligent with her work. But, 8 months passed, and she started noticing some certain things that does not add up in Kelechi’s suppliers dealings. She had suspected that Kelechi was cheating, but she didn’t say a word.
She was busy keeping records and keeping evidence and copies of every invoice that Kelechi brings to her. Anunka noticed that the invoice that Kelechi was bringing to her does not match the amount of goods receipt. Every transfer Kelechi processed personally, there’s always shortage of money. She had to call Kelechi one side ; ; one evening at the supermarket and decided to talk to him before she takes action.
Brother Kelechi, good day, needed to speak to you because this is very urgent. I don’t want this thing to bring issue between you and your brothers. That is why I’m coming to you personally. I’ve noticed that the goods you are bringing in does not match what you are writing. The money you are sending every day for the sales you made does not rhyme.
After everyone has gone, I’m the last person to leave the supermarket. And let me tell you why your father trusted me and gave me this role is because I come down and I go through the counters. I count. I notice things. The money that I’ve short from what you have been sending is over 8 million. I am here to tell you that is affecting the business.
8 million naira removed from your drink business is affecting it. Look at the counters. They are almost empty. I am here to beg you. I don’t know how you are doing your things. I’m not accusing you of anything, but please Kelechi, do your accounting well and provide the money. I’m giving you only one week.
After one week and that money is not been handed over to the joint business account that I’m using to handle all the transactions, I’m going to call a family meeting and I’ll tell everyone what is going on. Kelechi felt threatened and gave Kem a very dirty slap. Kem was shocked. She was not expecting that. You just slapped me? Yes.
I just slapped you and I will slap you again and again if you talk to me anyhow. Do I look like your mate? You are here accusing me of stealing 8 million naira. What is your proof? Can you show me the proof that says that I stole to 8 million naira? It’s like because you are handling this business, you feel like you are both others. Don’t try that rubbish with me.
I am older than you and I have the right to do whatever I want in my father’s company. My company right now. So please get out of my face. You can call family meeting for all I care, but all I want you to know is that when you are pointing fingers, let my name not enter your mouth. Who knows? You have been the one stealing the money and you are looking for who to go and push the blame to.
Not me. Not Kelechi. You cannot intimidate me. Kelechi walked out on her And I came was really speechless. She was holding her cheek, still thinking and processing how that just happened. Did Kelechi just raise hand on her? I came became very angry. ; [snorts] ; She wanted to walk out immediately and go home and go and complain to Dozie what his younger brother just did.
But on her way, she jammed her friend who came to visit her. When her friend Ola noticed the red eyes, she was confused. Did something enter your eyes? Why is your eye red? But I came was too speechless to talk. I beg you, tell me now. You said we are supposed to go out this evening. What happened? It was then I came broke down in tears.
Can you imagine that? My husband’s younger brother slapped me. It is a lie, Ola said to her. That’s not true. What do you mean that’s not true? I’m telling you that he slapped me. A very hot slap. Because I was kind enough to approach him this evening to remit the 8 million naira that was missing from the accounting that he has been doing for the past 8 months since their father died.
Every receipt, every transfer, there is always money missing. Whenever they go home and the last person to leave the supermarket together with all the staff, we will do counting and record. At the end of the day, his own is always shorting. I’m not even going to talk about Emeka’s own. He too is also stealing. They don’t give me the full money and whenever they want to restock, if you see the outrageous money these people will be requesting for to restock and at the end of the day, they will not bring back 1/4 of the money that was given to
them. I do not want to cause trouble since I’m the only one that is handling the accounting. I wanted you handle it maturely. That is why I went to Kelechi. With Ola, to tell him to refund the money. Only for me to receive a hot slap. He threatened me that I should try it. Ah. That’s too much.
What? Even if he wants to threaten you, that’s fine. But why would he raise his hand on you? Is he crazy? I’ve always known that Kelechi and Emeka do not like the fact that I handle the accounting. When the father was alive, he was really strict. And the business was floating very well. But ever since this man died, look at the counters of the drink section.
And look at the counters of the provision section. They are all getting dried up. There is nothing there, because they don’t remit the full money. My husband is barely around. Anytime he’s around and I try to talk to him, he doesn’t even give me audience. Now, his brother slapped me. Ah, Ola. I will not take that insult.
Lilai. I know that Kelechi is older than me, by just months or latest 1 year. But he will pay dearly for this slap. Nkem, out of anger, then told Ola that the outing will no longer work. She needs to go home and trash this out. Ola asked her to calm down and make sure she does not overreact.
And she should also go with proof, since there is 24/7 CCTV cameras in this supermarket. She should get evidence before leaving. Nkem thanked Ola and went to the CCTV room and asked the person in charge to get the footage of what happened few minutes ago. After Nkem got it, she went home straight. But when she got home, it was a different whole situation that was happening.
It turns out Kelechi and Emeka had already called their mother, together with their wives, and complaining that her Uche was stealing from the company. Dozie, her husband, too, was also there. They provided evidence that Uche has been stealing, and she has stole over 20 million naira from the company. Immediately she walked in, the mother-in-law asked her to stand one side and answer simple questions.
Uche was confused. What is going on here? But her mother-in-law asked her to shut up and listen. No one wanted to hear her own side of the story. Her husband was just standing there mute. The man did not say anything. That was what was confusing Uche, and the mother-in-law started. So, you came into this house.
So, it has been your agenda to destroy my family, destroy our businesses, and run away with our money? Me? Mama, what are you talking about? What I’m talking about is that Kelechi and Emeka has proof that you’ve stolen over 20 million naira from the supermarket. And because of that, the business is going down.
The counters are empty, and there is no money to restock. So, they sent you, Abi? None of the daughters-in-law in this house put mouth in the business of the family. I wonder how my husband trusted you and put you in charge of that accounting. Uche was expecting her husband to come to her rescue, but the man was just quiet, folding his arms and looking at what was going on.
Mama, I did not steal any money. If you did not steal any money, show me why this money is being transferred to your account on a monthly basis for the past 8 months since my husband passed away. Check this record and tell me. Uche collected the papers, and she checked it from beginning to the ending. Mama, this is not even my account.
Yes, the account is bearing my name, but this is not my account. My BVN can never be linked to this. You can go to any of the banks and check it out. My BVN is not linked. So, anybody that brought this thing to you is trying to frame me for no good reason. I’ve been transparent about my account since from day one.
I don’t know why everybody is ganging up against me now. How can it be linked to your BVN? Obianuju, Kelechi’s wife stood up immediately and started pointing fingers. You are smart enough not to link it to your BVN so that nobody will know that you have been stealing from the company. This supermarket is the reason why your bride price was paid.
You did the most popular wedding. Your children are going to the most expensive school. And you are living a comfortable life today. It’s that supermarket, that company that you see there. But tell me why you want to break it down just because the owner is dead and no longer there to provide things. Brother Dozie, see the kind of woman you married.
I thought you said you trusted her. I thought you said she’s a good woman. Now, see. She couldn’t even talk to defend herself because she has been caught red-handed. If I were you, I won’t keep her in this house as a daughter-in-law. She’s here to kill, destroy, and tarnish. Ah, what kind of thing is this? Ikem couldn’t hold the tears that was flowing.
She was so disappointed, especially towards her husband who stood there and allowed his family members insult her. And Dozie was the only person she could face. She immediately turned towards Dozie and then asked him one question. My darling husband, you’ve been quiet all this while. And all these accusations, they were throwing it back left, center.
And you didn’t see anything. Do you believe that I, your wife, Emeka, you steal from your company using a secret account? But Dozie kept quiet. He did not say a word. Your silence means that you agree with your family. Your silence means that you do not trust your wife that have been married to you for over 9 years now.
But it is fine. It is okay. I resign. I’m no longer working as the accounting manager in that supermarket. And it also seems that you have given me your answer according to what they say. I should leave the house. I’m a stranger. And I do not belong here. If you can’t defend me, who else will defend me in this room? If your brother’s wife gang up against me, if your brothers gang up against me, I expected one person to stand by me, which is you.
But unfortunately, the man I’ve loved for 9 years refused to stand by me in this difficult time. But there is no problem. Before I leave the sitting room, I have something that I want to show everybody. Immediately, Emeka brought out the CCTV footage of what happened earlier that day and played it. Kelechi forgot that there were CCTV cameras at the supermarket and he forgot that Emeka also has access to it apart from him and the brothers.
Immediately after the CCTV was played, Emeka now turned towards the whole family. She brought out documents, screenshots, proof that says Kelechi has been the one stealing and Emeka has been the one stealing from the company. She presented everything in front of everyone. I hope you all will eat your supermarket. You should have told me Emeka.
You should have told me Kelechi. Or tell your own brother that you don’t want me to handle the business. Because of your greediness. Anyways, these are all the proof there is. As for that thing you are holding mama, it is fake. ; [snorts] ; I never opened any separate account. That money you are seeing there does not exist. You can take me to court.
You can call police on me. I am ready to face any accusation that you bring. But just make sure as you are doing that, your sons too will be persecuted for stealing from the company. Kelechi stole over 8 million while your loving son Emeka here stole over 5 million. The meat, beef, fish section of that supermarket has been on float because I handle it personally.
Nothing was missing. I only collect my salary and I’m contented with that. As for the other section, the counters are dry because your sons has finished the whole money. Here, I resign. Immediately, Dozie stood up and went and picked up those documents and went through it one after the other. And then faced his brothers for them to explain what is really going on.
He threatened to call the family lawyer and call police. Even if it would take everybody to prison. Let’s everywhere scatter. Because they were accusing his wife with so much evidence, he didn’t say a single word. Because they claimed that they found money in my wife’s bag, I decided to keep quiet. I decided not to support her.
Not even that I’m supporting evil. I waited because I know her. She’s someone that comes with evidence. I might lose my marriage for being a fool for these past few hours. But all of you will go down with me. Dozie picked up his phone and called the family lawyer. And in less than 5 minutes, the man arrived and assessed all the documents that Iken brought, including the one they used to accuse Iken of stealing.
And the lawyer made his final judgment. From the things that are presented in front of me, this is not a real account. The money that has over 20 million naira is Iken’s account. It does not exist. I just checked now. But these ones, they are real. Kelechi and Emeka has been stealing from the company. Most of the personal transfers here were fake.
The receipts here were also fake. So, the money you give to them to restock is not the money they are returning back. They are giving you fake alerts back to back. So, I think they knew how they were able to fabricate all those ones. I don’t know. But I’m just telling you what I know now. Immediately the lawyer finished talking, Iken walked out of the house carrying her bags and her two children.
Dozie tried all he could to stop her, but Iken refused. She reminded Dozie that she did not come from a poor home. She reminded Dozie that her own family is doing well and they would gladly take care of her and the two kids. She would not transfer any problem they are having to their children.
He’s free to come and see them anytime, but she can never stay in this kind of toxic environment. Never. And that’s how Iken walked out of that house and walked out of her marriage. Dozie was really heartbroken, but there is nothing he could do. His foolishness made him to lose his family. He would have stand by his wife, but he didn’t. Out of anger, he told the lawyer to share the businesses into three equal parts.
Let Kelechi continue handling his section. Let Emeka continue handling his own section. and let Nnamdi handle his own section. They will all sell in the same supermarket, but everyone will handle their accounting, restocking, and everything that has to do with the business. Everyone will handle their own. Anyone their business fail is on their own.
Everybody should just go their separate ways since they don’t want peace in the house. Since they don’t want transparency. Dozie’s mother was really heartbroken that the children had to lie against an innocent woman, but there was nothing she could do than to apologize. And she agreed that the business should be shared so that it will not bring issue in the future.
Days later, Dozie and his mother went to Ikenna’s house to go and beg her to come back, but Ikenna refused that she’s not coming back to anywhere. She will rebuild her life and start all over. That they can co-parent, but one single action have destroyed the love and the faith and the trust she had for her husband.
If you were Ikenna, would you go back to Dozie after what he did by not defending her in front of his brothers? What do you think is the right thing to do?
