Imagine one dry afternoon inside a village where dust dey fly anyhow and the sun dey hot like fire. On a normal day, everyone dey find shade to hide their head, but for one small dusty path, a young girl dey run with tired legs, her eyes heavy with tears wey she dey try hide. She hold one small, dirty bag wey her few tattered clothes dey inside. Behind her, inside a big, fine compound, a woman dey stand with her hand for waist, her face red with anger, as she dey shout, “Comot for my house! Pack your load and never return!” The young girl kneels down for the hot sand, begging, “Please, Madam, have mercy on me! I no get anywhere to go!” But the rich woman just hiss, turn her back, and slam the heavy wooden gate. The poor girl, with nowhere to go and no family to call, start to wander into the dark night, not knowing say that same gate wey dem slam against her na the key wey open the door to her royal destiny.
How a poor, hated servant girl take comot from sleeping inside abandoned hut to sitting on the most respected golden throne of the land is a story wey go make you believe say God dey use the foolish things of this world to confound the wise.
To understand how this massive turnaround take happen, we must go back to the beginning, to the time when the village of King Chima was peaceful and everything dey bubble with life. For this village, a rich merchant named Gogo lived. Gogo was not just rich; he was a man wey get sweet heart, and everyone did respect him. When time reach for him to marry, he choose Shalawa, the beautiful daughter of Amope, the bead goddess of the town. Their wedding na the biggest event the village had ever seen. Because of how popular and kind Amope was, people from far and near bring different-different fine gifts for the new bride. But among all these expensive beads, gold, and clothes, one special gift stand out. A small, innocent servant girl named Kemi was given to Shalawa as a wedding gift. The elders wey bring Kemi hold Shalawa’s hand and give her one strong advice: “Treat this girl with kindness. Never maltreat her, and your home go always get peace.”
For the first few months, Shalawa try her best. She did treat Kemi like her own younger sister. She go buy her simple clothes, allow her to eat the same food, and they go laugh together inside Gogo’s massive compound. Kemi, on her part, was extremely grateful. She go wake up before the birds, sweep the whole compound, cook sweet soup, and make sure her mistress no even bend down to do any work.
But as the elders do say, the character wey person get inside, na condition go bring am out.
Eight months after the wedding, Shalawa get pregnant. Everyone suppose dey happy, but instead of joy, a dark spirit of jealousy and anger enter Shalawa. She start to see Kemi as a slave, not a sister again. She go send Kemi under the hot, biting sun to fetch heavy water from the stream, or make her climb the dangerous hills to cut heavy logs of firewood. Sometimes, if Kemi do any small mistake, Shalawa go lock the kitchen and refuse to give her even a spoon of garri to drink. Kemi go sleep with empty stomach, crying into her dusty mat.
The real tragedy happen when Shalawa walk enter labor room. After many hours of pain, she lost her baby. The child die.
Instead of Shalawa to look for comfort in the arms of her husband or pray to the gods, her heart fill with bitter poison. She look for the nearest person to blame, and her eyes fall on Kemi. She run enter the compound, grab Kemi by her hair, and start to drag her on the floor. “You are a witch!” Shalawa screamed, her voice shaking the compound. “You carry bad luck enter my marriage! Your black leg na him cause the death of my first child!” Kemi weep, she swear by the soil say she no know anything about the death, but nobody listen to her. Even when Shalawa later give birth to two beautiful daughters and one son, she never stop cursing Kemi. Every bad thing wey happen for that house, dem go say na Kemi cause am. Kemi’s life turn to one painful cycle of heavy labor, insults, starvation, and deep loneliness. Yet, Kemi never allow the bitterness to enter her soul. She go still pray for her madam and work hard, hoping say one day, the sun go shine on her own side.
One afternoon, Shalawa call Kemi. “Take this message go meet my friend for the Village Square,” she barked. “If you delay, I go peel your skin today!” Kemi grab her wrapper and start to run.
The sun on that day was merciless. It dey beat Kemi’s head like say the sky dey angry. Her feet were bare, burning on the hot, dusty ground, but she no dare stop because she know say Shalawa’s anger no dey get mercy. As she dey run through the bustling market crowd, sweating and breathing heavily, she did bump into a young man. The man was dressed in simple clothes, but he get one majestic carriage wey you no fit hide.
It was Prince Tao, the only son of the King.
Prince Tao was famous across the seven villages for his deep wisdom and soft heart. He was walking through the market to see his people when he spot Kemi. He notice the pain on her face, the tattered nature of her dress, and the way she dey run like say death dey chase her.
“Hey, young lady,” the Prince called out, his voice gentle like morning breeze but commanding enough to make Kemi freeze.
Kemi turn around, her heart jumping. When she realize say na the Prince dey speak to her, she quickly drop to her knees in the dust, bowing her head. “My Prince,” she whispered.
“Who are you, and why are you running inside this hot sun without shoes?” Prince Tao asked, his eyes filled with genuine concern.
“My name is Kemi,” she replied, her voice shaking. “I dey run errand for my Madam. If I late, she go beat me.”
The Prince look her for eye and see a pure, beautiful soul wey heavy suffering don sit down on top. He no want to delay her make her madam no go punish her, so he tell her, “Go quickly and finish your errand. But tomorrow, when the sun dey set, meet me for this same spot.” Kemi look those kind eyes, and something inside her tell her say she fit trust this stranger. She nod her head and run go deliver her message.
But as she reach house, the wall of her world collapse.
“Why you delay?!” Shalawa roared the moment Kemi step enter the gate.
“Madam, I… I bump into person for market…” Kemi try to explain, but Shalawa no even let her finish. A heavy slap land for Kemi’s face.
“You dey lie! You go play with men for market while my work dey suffer!” Shalawa screamed. In her hot, blind rage, she run enter Kemi’s small corner, pack her tattered bag, and throw am outside the gate. “Pack your dirty load and leave my house! I don tire for your bad luck! Never step foot for my compound again!”
Kemi fell to her knees, crying, begging her mistress to remember the advice of the elders, to have mercy on a motherless child. But Shalawa slam the heavy wooden gate. Kemi look left, she look right, the sky was already turning dark. She grab her tattered bag and start to walk. She find one old, abandoned mud hut for the corner of the village, she crawl inside, hug her tattered bag, and cry herself to sleep as rain start to beat the leaking thatch roof.
What would you have done in this situation? If you were Gogo, the husband of Shalawa, would you have stood by and watched your wife chase an innocent orphan girl into the dangerous night, or would you have fought for Kemi to stay?
The next morning, Kemi wake up with body pain. She carry her bag and start to walk again, her legs heavy like lead. As she dey walk, not even knowing where she dey go, she look up and see Prince Tao standing there. He had been waiting for her since morning.
When the Prince see her state—her wet clothes, her swollen eyes, her tattered bag—his heart bleed. He sit her down under a big tree and ask her to tell him everything. Kemi open her heart, she pour out all the years of pain, the starvation, how her madam blame her for the dead child, and how she throw her out into the cold night.
Prince Tao did listen with his head bowed. When she finish, he stood up, stretch his hand to her, and said, “Dry your tears, Kemi. From today, you no be servant again. Come with me to the Palace.”
When Kemi enter the Palace, she feel like say she dey dream. The servants take her, bath her with sweet-smelling water, give her fine royal wrappers, and keep her inside one beautiful room wey get soft bed. For the first time in her life, Kemi sleep and wake up without hearing anybody scream her name or threaten to beat her.
As weeks pass, Kemi start to help around the Palace. Even though she was a guest, her humble nature no allow her to sit down idle. She go join the palace maids to sweep, clean, and cook. But anyone wey see Kemi know say she no be ordinary girl. Her intelligence, her grace, and her golden heart did shine brighter than the palace gold. Prince Tao spend more time with her, walking through the royal gardens, teaching her how to read, and listening to her talk about her simple dreams.
Slowly, the Prince realize say he don find the bone of his bone. He no want any of those proud princess daughters from neighboring towns. He wanted Kemi, the resilient girl wey get gold inside her heart.
One cool evening, under a sky full of bright stars, Prince Tao lead Kemi to the center of the royal garden. He hold her rough hands, look deep into her eyes, and said, “Kemi, I don’t want you to be a servant or a guest anymore. I want you to be my wife. I want you to sit beside me on the throne as my Queen.”
Kemi freeze. She look the Prince, she look her hand, she think say maybe she dey dream. “My Prince,” she whispered, tears of joy running down her face. “I na ordinary house-girl. How I go fit be Queen?”
“Your heart get more gold than the crown wey I dey wear,” Prince Tao replied. He pull her close, and Kemi, with a heart full of gratitude, said yes.
The news of the Prince’s engagement to the former servant girl spread through the seven villages like wild fire. People dey rejoice because they know say Kemi get sweet heart. The King himself gave them his full blessings, and preparation for the grandest royal wedding start.
But inside Gogo’s house, Shalawa was dying of jealousy.
“How?!” Shalawa screamed, breaking her expensive clay pots on the floor. “That dirty, cursed servant girl! The one wey I feed with my leftover! She want to become the Queen? Over my dead body!” Her heart turn to a dark pit of hatred. She plot say she must destroy Kemi’s happiness before the wedding day.
First, Shalawa start to spread wicked rumors. She go tell the palace guards, the chiefs, and the market women say Kemi na witch, say she kill her baby with juju, and say she want to enter palace to destroy the royal family. But the rumors fall like pack of cards because the people of the palace already know Kemi’s pure character.
When her rumors fail, Shalawa decide to do the unthinkable. She decide to kill the Prince.
“If the Prince die,” she whispered to herself with a wicked smile, “there go be no wedding. Kemi’s helper go be gone, and dem go chase her comot from the palace back to the gutter.”
Shalawa look for one palace maid wey she did treat bad years ago when she was still a rich bride. She offer her heavy gold coins and give her a small bottle of deadly poison. “Put this inside the Prince’s food,” Shalawa instructed her. “Make sure Kemi na she go serve the food, so that when the Prince die, everyone go think say na Kemi poison him!”
But the devil is always a liar.
The maid take the poison, but as she look the bottle, her mind run go back to many years ago. She remember when she was working for Gogo’s house and she mistakenly broke a very expensive clay pot. Shalawa had grabbed a heavy cane to beat her to death, but Kemi had jumped in front of the cane, taking the heavy blows on her own back to save the poor maid.
“Kemi save my life,” the maid said to herself, her eyes filling with tears. “I no go ever destroy her.”
Instead of putting the poison, the maid secretly went to a local herbalist and got a special leaf wey go make person fall into a deep, heavy sleep wey go resemble death, but without any harm. She switch the poison with the sleeping portion and put am for the Prince’s soup.
That afternoon, Kemi, not knowing anything, carry the bowl of soup go serve her prince. Prince Tao eat the soup, and within thirty minutes, he collapse on the floor, his body cold, his breath silent.
The Palace was thrown into heavy mourning. The King wept, the chiefs tore their clothes, and Kemi fell on the Prince’s body, crying like her heart want to burst. “My Prince! My love! Wake up!” she screamed, but he no move.
Shalawa, from her house, was celebrating. “I don win!” she laughed. “That witch don lose her helper!”
But on the second day, a massive miracle happen. Prince Tao open his eyes, yawned, and sat up on his bed! The whole palace erupt in massive celebration. The King immediately ordered a heavy investigation. The guilty maid, unable to carry the weight of her lie anymore, ran to the throne room, fell on her knees, and confessed everything.
“It was Shalawa!” she wept, pointing her finger outside the palace. “She gave me poison to kill the Prince and blame Kemi! But I switch the poison to save Kemi, because of the kindness she show me years ago!”
The King and the Prince were shocked. The truth was finally out. The chiefs and guards immediately marched to Shalawa’s house, but before they could reach, the gods of the land had already started their own judgment.
A massive, mysterious fire had erupted from the kitchen of Gogo’s compound. Within minutes, the heavy fire consumed the entire house, burning all their riches, their gold, their clothes, and their barn of yams to ashes. Gogo, inside his struggle to save his children, was trapped under a falling roof and lost his life. Shalawa only managed to run out with her three children, clutching nothing but the tattered clothes on her body.
She was bankrupt, homeless, and a widow—all in one single day.
Do you believe say the fire wey burn Shalawa house na natural accident, or na the instant karma of the gods wey dey fight for Kemi?
Three days after the fire, Kemi and Prince Tao stood before the altar. The wedding was the most beautiful event the village had ever witnessed. Flowers from the royal garden covered the walls, and musicians played sweet tunes. Kemi, dressed in a magnificent white and gold royal wrapper, looked like a true goddess. When the King placed the heavy crown on her head, the crowd went wild with joy. Queen Kemi had finally taken her seat.
One morning, as Queen Kemi was sitting on her golden throne beside her husband, a guard walk enter the palace hall. “My Queen,” the guard bowed. “There is a poor, homeless woman outside with her children. They are begging for food and shelter. The woman say she know you.”
“Bring them in,” Queen Kemi said gently.
The heavy wooden doors open, and a woman crawl enter the throne room. Her wrapper was dirty and torn, her face covered in soot, and her eyes hollow with deep shame. Behind her, her three children were crying from hunger.
The woman look up, and her heart stop. Standing before her, sitting majestically on the golden throne wey glitter like sun, was Kemi—the same Kemi she had starved, beaten, and chased out like a dog.
Shalawa fell flat on her face, weeping, her body shaking with heavy guilt. “My Queen!” she wailed, her forehead touching the cold palace floor. “I am sorry! I treat you like animal, I accuse you of witch, I even try to destroy your marriage! Please, don’t kill me! Just give my children small food to eat, even if you go throw me inside the dungeon!”
The entire palace guard draw their swords, waiting for Queen Kemi to give the order to lock her up or execute her for treason.
But Queen Kemi slowly stood up from her throne. She walk down the stairs, her long royal wrapper trailing behind her. She stop in front of Shalawa, bend down, and use her soft royal hands to lift her former mistress from the dirt.
“Dry your tears, Shalawa,” Kemi said, her voice filled with a peace wey pass human understanding. “I no get any anger or bitterness for my heart. When you chase me comot for your house, you think say you dey punish me, but you no know say you dey push me go meet my destiny. I forgive you completely.”
Kemi turn to the palace staff. “Provide a fine house for Shalawa and her children. Give them new clothes, food, and make sure her children go to the royal school. Let Gogo’s family find peace again.”
Shalawa look Kemi, she look the King, she fall to her knees again, but this time, na tears of deep gratitude and repentance dey flow from her eyes. She realize say Kemi’s greatness no be just because of the crown on her head, but because of the infinite capacity of her heart to show mercy to those wey least deserve am.
King Tao and Queen Kemi went on to rule the kingdom for many happy years. They brought an era of unparalleled peace, justice, and prosperity to the land. And their story was told from generation to generation, teaching every child say:
Decency and a clean heart go always outshine the most expensive crown, because when men plan your downfall, the gods go use their own hand to build the ladder for your elevation.
