Jaclyn Hill: Beauty Guru to OUT OF TOUCH Influencer – Ty
My ears are open. I’m listening. I’m reading your comments. You guys are saying that like you’re sick of luxury. She wants to know where did her audience go because people are just not interacting anymore. Let’s just say people let her have it. It’s like there’s an influencer handbook that lays out all the steps.
Start out being humble and relatable. Grow a large following. Make a ton of money. You start to spend that money in really extravagant ways. You start to lose yourself by flaunting your possessions and your money. I promise you right here and now that I will never sell out. I promise you that I will never lie to you.
; Documents you’ve seen. You don’t know what’s in process. You don’t know what’s happened. You don’t know who’s lying out there. You don’t know unless you literally work for me. You don’t know. ; I promise you that I will never put money above a relationship with my subscribers. I promise you that I will stay true to myself.
; You’re just talking about this because you were paid to promote it. Yeah, people are done. Influencers are realizing in real time that the gravy train has reached the end of the tracks. Jaclyn Hill is the most outofouch influencer. The Jaclyn Hill name on social media is makeup, right? ; It cannot be easy to receive that much very blunt direct feedback and just human to human, I sympathize with how she must be feeling right now in this moment.
; Behind the scenes of the camera that has led to me making the decision on my own to shut down both Jaclyn Roxan jewelry and my cozy comfort line. ; ; Can you outspend your fame like you can outspend your fortune? ; Now it’s like I put videos out there and sometimes I just feel like I’m talking to myself.
; Beauty guru Jaclyn Hill was one of the most famous beauty gurus on YouTube. But after she constantly shilled out makeup products to her audience, including her moldy lipstick line, huge one. I know. It’s like there’s more than one. Yeah, definitely. ; Oh my gosh. ; I’m sorry, but you can’t make this shit up.
; And the superersized, now bankrupt Morphe makeup PALETTES to this year showcasing her closet filled with hundreds of designer shoes from her years of accumulated wealth. This is my ugly house life reset. Jaclyn Hill became known as the most disingenuous and outofouch beauty gurus. ; Jacine is the perfect example of a social media capitalist.
Classic Capitalists have always taken advantage of their fan bases, but thanks to social media, Jacqueline also has a direct communication with her customers, meaning that they have an extra parasocial relationship where her followers think, “She couldn’t possibly be lying to me. She’s my friend.” ; Being able to get on camera and connect with you guys and leave my house and meet you guys. Hi.
; There’s one thing that’s undeniable. Jaclyn Hill is a brilliant beauty salesman whose success was attributed to her ability to market new beauty products and sell them to her millions of adoring fans who trusted her advice and the way she raved about the next makeup item. I don’t even want to like overhype this collection up.
Like I want this video to be so short and sweet even though it’s probably going to be 45 minutes long. It’s so amazing. It’s so creamy. It’s so buttery. It’s so pigmented. It can be yours right now for $49. [laughter] Like I don’t want to do that because it’s just so good. But it’s like once you get it, once you go swatch it, once you have it for yourself, like the proof is in the pudding.
That’s all I’m saying. ; Once Jacine lost her credibility and the trust her audience had in her, her shine lost its luster. But Jaclyn Hill is a master of social media and has masterfully reinvented herself multiple times throughout the course of her career. Able to build herself back up whenever a genre of content fails.
; I started on YouTube 14 years ago. Like, that is insane. I have been here for every single era consistently uploading downloading every new platform. Like watch the birth of Tik Tok, you know, like I remember when Instagram became a thing. It was like this new app and we were posting the square photos.
Like I’ve been here for all of it. ; Recently, Jacqueline switched platforms and began posting more and more lifestyle content on Tik Tok, becoming known for overconumption and flaunting her wealth. ; I fear I blacked out. Let’s do a shoe haul. until eventually her views dropped more and more and Jacqueline complained that no one was watching her content.
; I feel like we are in such a weird place on social media as content creators where I am like fighting. I feel like I am trying to run through mud to connect with my followers. ; It seems people were fed up with Jacine’s videos and what they represent. O-touch influencers trying to shove new lifestyle products in people’s faces constantly and flaunting their wealth and consumption, which contrasts starkly with the current reality.
Most people are living paycheck to paycheck, groceries overpriced, and the overall price of everything skyrocketing. Before we get into this video, it’s time for today’s sponsor. While everything is getting more and more expensive, home prices are skyrocketing. The onus ends up being on us to keep up with increasing prices and manage our finances in turn.

Thank you so much to RocketMoney for sponsoring this video. ; ; Jacquine, like many early content creators, started her content journey organically and came from a normal background.
Like many early famous YouTubers, she was a normal person who wanted to make YouTube content. Jacquine was born Jacqueline Eers on July 20th, 1990. Jacqueline grew up near Mineral, Illinois on a 700 acre commercial farm that had been in her family for four generations. She lived with her mother, Robin, her father, James, and her two siblings.
Her father ended up having a tragic car accident, and both of his legs were injured, preventing him from working. I was first introduced to addiction through my father. He was in a life-changing accident when I was 7 years old. And I’ll never forget 7 years old, my mom getting a phone call and just losing her mind.
My dad was on his way to the Quad Cities. My dad was a farmer for generations and generations. My family was always farmers. on his way to the city one day when it was snowing and a semi came across the median and hit him 120 mph head on ; smashed his car so badly that when the police got to the scene they didn’t even check his car because they just presumed that whoever was in that car they did not make it they were and the outcome of that was I mean basically every bone in my dad’s body was shattered his hipbone was sticking out of his skin like he was
mangled he was in surgery for almost 18 hours I think it was and somehow they managed to save his legs although one was 3 in shorter than the other ; and inside it was all metal metal everything. ; Um and so because of that we lived in Illinois and my dad was a farmer. He was told that he would never walk again.
; So in 1998 her family moved from their farm to Tampa, Florida after her father said he was called by God to pursue missionary work and become an evangelist. ; Continuing her rags to rich’s story. The reason Jacqueline’s dad left Hog Farming is because in 1997 his car was hit by a truck, breaking both of his legs, leading him to receive over $4 million in insurance money.
I just want to say that again, $4 million. So, he went from being one of the most successful hog farmers in that part of Illinois to also being the recipient of a massive cash payout. Jaclyn was homeschooled as her family traveled around the world to preach Christianity. But by 2012, her parents divorced. Jako remained estranged from her father ever since.
; As you can imagine, with an accident that brutal, the pain medication that was prescribed to him was never ending. He had already struggled with addiction. He was in and out of AA. He got clean. Uh felt like I was like his second chance at being a father cuz he really wasn’t there in a lot of ways for my brother and sister.
There was a lot of favoritism with me because of that. So, as my father was developing this horrible addiction to painkillers and opiates, he also had this very strange connection with me cuz I was his second chance. So, I felt growing up like I got the brunt of it. It was more so like, “Oh, your brother and sister, they don’t have to have a strict curfew and they can do what they want.
” But me, it was like he was like obsessed with me, obsessed with like ; controlling me, obsess like it it became a very codependent relationship. It got so dark, you guys. So, when I was younger, I I struggled with panic attacks really, really bad. ; Um, I still remember my first one like in the mall out of nowhere, my hand just like cramped up and my heart was racing.
I thought I was going to pass out. I ran home and my dad was like, “Take this. It’ll help you. It helps me.” And I did not know until like 8 years later that he was giving me ; Mhm. ; Oh, wow. ; And I was like 14 ; and he was It’s like I feel bad even talking about this, but after my marriage to my ex-husband, I had to completely cut my father off.
I actually had to file for a restraining order. Her father ended up passing away in March of 2020. Jacine has mentioned that her childhood was not easy and her family faced many financial struggles. Jacine also has talked about her relationship with her mother who she described as her biggest supporter. ; My stepdad is sitting behind the camera right now just smiling ear to ear watching us.
But this is my mommy here on my YouTube channel. This is the first time we’ve ever sat down and actually filmed like this before. ; I know it’s my first appearance on YouTube. I think a lot of people probably don’t remember this, but I used to work for you and she was actually my first employee. The ; whole thing started because she was doing makeup for people.
She was doing models, etc. They would not pay her fully what they promised. Yeah. I said, “You need you need somebody to help manage this.” I said, “I’m I’m going to make sure you have contracts so you get paid what you’re due and what you’re worth.” Because she worked really hard. She would spend almost the entire weekends with no sleep.
; And this is when I first started YouTube. ; And so I said, “Look, I’m going to manage you. I know you can’t pay me, but I just wanted to protect her and help her grow her business. And everyone thought I was crazy for what I was doing cuz at the time, this was 11 years ago, social media was so so fresh.
She, for some weird reason, was like, “No, she’s got this.” Like very gungho. Never for a second. You always were like, “Just keep going. It’s going to get better. You’re going to keep making more money. You’re going to be successful at this. Like, don’t stop.” She bought me my first camera, my lighting.
I mean, she did everything. She was my number one supporter and all that and then became such a core part of like my brand and everyone just loved her so much. After Jacqueline graduated from high school, she attended college in Sarasota, Florida to study photography. Around this time, 2010 2011, posting on to YouTube wasn’t very common.
It wasn’t even imagined that you could potentially do it as a career path. Jacine first started posting videos onto YouTube in 2011. She was working as a makeup artist and an employee at MAC Cosmetics. Her very first YouTube video was uploaded on December 20th, 2011. Okay. So, again, [snorts] very wearable holiday look inspired by Kim Kardashian.
She’s going to be on the cover of Glamour and it’s like a New Year’s Eve festive, fun, girly, like sleepover inspired. And I saw the promo shots for it and I was like, “Oh my gosh, yes.” Don’t think that like I’m trying to say I look like her or anything. I know. I get it. I’m not cute. If you’re not so annoyed that you haven’t turned off this video already, keep watching.
Okay, so I have already done my foundation and my concealer and my eye primer. I’m sorry my eyes are so bloodshot. I’m absolutely exhausted. Um, first thing I’m going to do is I’m going to take a highlight color underneath my brow because Kim is always beautifully highlighted. Any color would work like right here.
Any color from this entire palette would work. ; Jacine uploaded videos in her home sharing makeup tutorials on how she did makeup, usually with a fun fabric backdrop. ; I accidentally deleted my intro, so this is what you get. Hey guys, so today I am going to be doing a makeup tutorial for you. I wanted to do something random. And ; though I think what’s important to know is even scrolling through Jaclyn Hill’s videos on YouTube, Jacine quickly began sharing her favorite makeup products, making her YouTube channel quickly about overconumption itself. While
many of us look fondly back on the days of the beauty gurus of the 2015 era as a time before overconumption really took over the influencing industry when people could just share organic fun makeup tips. What had made the beauty influencing industry so popular so quickly and most notably so profitable was the fact that it was easy to market products.
And what made the top influencers rise up so quickly was their ability to market products and work with the top makeup companies in marketing those products. Jaclyn Hill is a prime example of this quickly. Even in her early makeup content, she would share her favorite beauty products on the market.
Though her audience likely didn’t think she was marketing products to them, instead they viewed her as a trusted source, an expert in beauty who made amazing makeup tutorials whose advice they trusted. So when she came to them and told them whether or not a product was good and the variety of ways it would be used, they trusted her advice in that as well.
; No. Hey guys. So today I’m going to finally be doing my best of beauty for the year of 2014. If you are not familiar what that video is, then basically it is just a roundup of my favorite products from the entire year of 2014. Hey guys. So for today’s video I’m going to be doing my June beauty favorites.
I have so much to talk about, like this much. Like my desk is filled like this entire section with products to talk about. So, this is going to be a long one. So, strap in, grab yourself, get yourself a whole meal, okay? Because at this point, it’s probably going to be like 45 minutes long. ; So, almost immediately, Jaclyn Hill’s career skyrocketed, and she set the precedent for how beauty brands collaborated with beauty influencers, how they became known on YouTube at the time, beauty gurus.
By 2013, Jaclyn Hill collaborated with makeup brand Sigma Beauty. She created the Jaclyn Hill favorites brush set, which became a bestseller, instantly showing the power of the beauty guru. ; Hi everybody. So, today is a very exciting video for me because not only am I doing my most requested video of all time, but I am also filming with a brand new camera. So, I am an HD mother.
what brushes I think are the best, what brushes are absolutely necessary to have, what I think the brushes you should own if you’re starting professional makeup kit, all these different things. Um, I do have my iPad right here with me so that I can look up some of the things online like prices and stuff and help you guys out a little bit.
So, I’m sorry if I’m like looking down all the time. And no, I’m not one of those people who carries my iPad around with me everywhere thinking that I’m like so fabulous. This was a Christmas present from my husband and tell you guys right now that if I were someone who didn’t have any brushes or I had like a few brushes from the drugstore and I didn’t know what to do, I would buy a kit.
That’s what I would do. I would invest my money in a kit and I would invest my money in a kit from Sigma. Um MAC does not sell kits, which I don’t know why they really should. I’ll put a link below. And you know, for the Sigma um Sigma Beauty website, I would invest in the Sigma premium kit. This is what I think that everybody would use these brushes in here.
It’s $164 and you get 15 brushes. Jacqueline was a master at marketing new beauty products, making them look alluring, interesting, and like the best next thing that you need in your beauty shelf, which kickstarted the success of the beauty influencer collaborations and how well a beauty influencer can sell a product.
Just 2 years after Jacquine began filming makeup tutorials, she was doing meet and greets, meeting her fans. The first major successful collaboration that Jaclyn Hill participated in that really showcased the power of the beauty influencer and how influencers were starting to outperform mainstream celebrities in collaborations with brands was in 2014 when Jaclyn Hill collaborated with makeup brand Becca Cosmetics to create what’s now known as the iconic Champagne Pop Highlighter, which again instantly definitely
became a bestseller. ; So, here’s the packaging of Jaclyn Hill’s highlighter. It’s in a reflective gold kind of champagne rose gold finish. The box has a really pretty texture on it and it says Becca followed by Jaclyn Hill’s signature. And this is the back of the packaging. It has a beautiful photo of Jaclyn Hill followed by some words written by her.
You can see the pink and the gold. It’s really just a true reflective champagne tone. So, I’m going to go ahead and swatch it for you on my finger. You can already see the gorgeous pink and gold reflectiveness to it. ; Everything Jacine touched turned to gold or champagne gold. The champagne pop highlighter hit the market at the perfect time as well.
As around 2014, highlighters were a newer concept in the makeup industry. And before this time, they weren’t really widely used as much. Beauty retailer Sephora sold more than 25,000 units of Champagne Pop within 20 minutes of its release, breaking sales records. Becca Cosmetics ended up being bought by Estee Lauder for 200 million in 2017.
Champagne Pop was one of the beauty products that undoubtedly put Becca Cosmetics on the map. 3 years ago, Jaclyn Hill created a custom highlighter with Becca Cosmetics that she marketed as a limited edition, but after they sold out, it was restocked in stores only a few months later. This is known as artificial scarcity, when a company pretends that there’s a limited amount of a product to make it seem more exclusive and valuable.
Jaclyn Hill is not the only person who does this in the makeup industry, and it’s fairly common in capitalism. Jacine just happens to be a repeat offender, meaning that we can probably assume that she’s doing it knowingly and not just as a mistake. Jaclyn Hill continued collaborating with beauty brands with her collaborations instantly selling out almost every time and allowing those beauty brands to gain more mainstream recognition.
In 2015, Jaclyn Hill was declared a brand ambassador for a fairly new and not as established cosmetics brand known as Morphe. ; She even stopped making tutorial videos and started only doing videos when Morphe had something to sell sell. ; Morphe brush Morphe Morphe brush Morphe brushes. Morphe. ; Looking back now, it seems like before then, Jacine participated in a lot of undisclosed ads for Morphe before she officially worked with them.
Today, we are going to be doing my Frankie. Don’t mess with me. Today, we are going to be doing my favorite brushes by Morphe. I’m not exactly sure how I’m going to name this video, but something along the lines. You see it, you clicked on it, you know what it’s called. It’s all good.
But I have seen so many requests for this video and so many people are saying that they want me to get it up as soon as possible because they want to purchase Morphe brushes for the holidays and they want to see my suggestions. So I was like, “Okay, if I upload the makeup tutorial, I’m going to have people upset that I didn’t upload this one first.
” So I am taking the opportunity today to film this video and then I will film my makeup tutorial in the next 2 or 3 days and you’ll be seeing the makeup tutorial very soon. So, with that being said, Morphe actually reached out to me and offered me an exclusive 15% off discount code for this video, which is so amazing. They did this for me as well when um the 350 palette came back in stock.
And that’s only going to last for 72 hours. I will put all the information in the bottom bar to the exact day and time that that discount code will be cut off so that you guys are fully aware of it. It is JH15 in all caps. Overall, the cosmetics brand Morphe success was largely defined off of working with beauty influencers as affiliates for the brand.
As someone who used to cover a lot of multi-level marketing, affiliate marketing when it comes to influencers feels very sketchy. Essentially, an influencer has an affiliate code that they promote out to their audience who loves them, trusts them, and oftentimes wants to support them. Every time a sale is made using that affiliate code, they get kickback.
It’s this idea that the brand wins, the influencer wins. The more sales the brand makes, the more sales the influencer makes. So, it’s in the influencers’s best interest to constantly promote the brand out as much as possible if they’re an affiliate partner. If an influencer is doing a sponsorship, everything is pretty cut and dry.
It’s pretty easy to understand the length of the partnership, how much an influencer is working with that company. It’s all pretty well defined. When an influencer is doing affiliate marketing, they can promote that company endlessly and constantly make it look like they just love that product so much that they have just enthusiastic support for this product.
And that’s why they’re constantly marketing that product out even though every time someone uses their link, they’re getting kickback. The entire influencers brand was built off of this idea of authenticity, of genuinely recommending certain products, giving genuine advice, whether it’s makeup advice or anything else.
And then they over time completely flip that around where they’re only giving advice over certain products or recommending certain products if they get a kickback from it because the limits of that partnership aren’t clearly defined or always communicated to the audience. And often times influencers make it appear as if they’re genuinely recommending these products.
They’re so enthusiastic about them even though they’re getting kickbacks. That’s why sometimes affiliate marketing feels very disingenuous to me personally and a way to take advantage of an influencers’s audience’s goodwill. But because Morphe so heavily implemented affiliate partnerships, they took off in success so rapidly through utilizing beauty YouTubers, allowing beauty YouTubers to make a lot of money off of promoting their brand in a way that not a lot of other beauty brands were doing at the time. So, though Morphe was fairly
unknown, they rose to the top fairly quickly due to all of their collaborations with prominent beauty influencers who all raved about Morphey’s products. I wonder why. Morphe products often being their eyeshadow palettes with a massive number of eyeshadows all contained into one palette.
And there’s been a lot of criticism over the Morphe eyeshadows, the lack of quality, or the fact that even though these eyeshadow palettes would contain a ton of various eyeshadows, they would all be way too similar of colors where you wouldn’t really be able to properly use every single eyeshadow in this palette. The Morphe and Jaclyn Hill collaboration came seemingly out of nowhere, especially because at the time Jacine was set to collaborate with other companies, but completely abandoned them to work on similar collaborations with Morphe instead. That
being said, Jacine still did continue some of her other collabs, like in 2015 when Jacine collaborated with Gerard Cosmetics, naming one of their lipsticks after herself and earning royalties from any sales made from the lipsticks. The problem is the owner of Gerard Cosmetics, Jen Gerard, ended up entering into a big beauty YouTuber controversy when she was called out by Manny MUA in a Snapchat video.
Manny called her out for allegedly calling a fellow beauty YouTuber, Karina Kaboom, the ugliest person ever. So, there is a huge beauty YouTuber called Manny MUA. A lot of you would probably already know him. So, basically on his public Snapchat, he took a clip of himself and the owner of Gerard Cosmetics, Jennifer, who is the woman who was emailing me watching a YouTuber post a negative review of Gerard Cosmetics.
And in that video clip, Manny says, “We’re just watching this haters review of Gerard Cosmetics.” And you can hear Jennifer, not very clearly, but you can definitely hear Jennifer, the owner of Gerard Cosmetics, say she’s the ugliest person ever. That is noting cool. Side note, I personally kind of think this might be what went wrong in the beauty industry during this whole beauty guru era.
Beauty YouTubers were constantly interacting with each other, causing major drama, even interacting with the drama channels who were reporting on this. A blurring of boundaries constantly happening. Even owners of major cosmetics companies were way too close and personal with so many beauty influencers and getting involved in major drama and gossip.
Like, you’re all owners and CEOs of cosmetics companies. And these are beauty YouTubers meant to promote your products, yet you’re all gossiping, going to dinners and trips together, exchanging gifts. Where is the sense of professionalism, the sense of boundaries? That being said, Jen Gerard, the owner of Gerard Cosmetics, claimed that this video was taken out of context and caused major damage to the brand.
In the wake of all this drama, Jacine tried severing ties with Gerard Cosmetics and her collaborations. More about this situation has unfolded over the years. Jen Gerard has spoken about how Jacqueline ghosted her in the wake of the scandal. ; We could talk about it. And she’s like, “Well, no, I don’t call. I only text. I I’m not good on the phone.
” And I’m like, “Who are you telling this to?” You know, cuz we talk on the phone like all the time. ; [laughter] ; Yeah. ; So, it just felt more like my way or the highway. ; On that note, I don’t necessarily feel like Jacquine owed Jen or Gerard Cosmetics her undying loyalty, especially after she already helped promote the brand quite a bit and boost their credibility.
If she was entirely loyal to them after it seemed like the owner called another beauty YouTuber ugly, that might be a little bit ridiculous. The onus is kind of on Jen Gerard to clear up a misunderstanding or the video being taken out of context, right? The only responsibility I could see Jacquine having in this situation may have been to fulfill contractual obligations.
That being said, it seems that Jacine felt that she deserved more from her partnership with Gerard Cosmetics after ghosting them and didn’t let the partnership just end there. Jen Gerard posted onto Reddit emails where Jacine appears to extort money. allegedly from her over her likeness being used on the Gerard Cosmetics website.
She asks to be paid $250,000 for the collaboration because her products were top sellers for the business. Jacqueline was eventually removed from the Gerard Cosmetics website. And I said to her, you know what, like really, thank you for everything. I’m perfectly fine with our with our business relationship ending. I’ll have your name off the website.
You know, I wish you nothing but success. You know, like that kind of thing. had to really really take a breath ; and yet continued to request a buyout for the lipsticks that she named allegedly. ; Then did she email you saying that she didn’t want to get anything messy, but she demanded you pay her quarter of a million dollars? ; Um, yes.
; For what? ; Well, I was confused about that, too. So, I asked that like, what do I get? Like, ; she’s already made commission. I mean, what was the setup? Was she Was it a payment that you gave her to collaborate on the product or is it like a percentage of sales? ; I paid her 30% commission. Okay. ; Plus a royalty for each unit sold.
So then she wants an additional quarter of a million just for parting ways. ; Correct. ; Were you confused? ; Very much so. Yeah. ; She says with that being said, and this is all you posted this on Reddit recently. I did. She says, “My likeness will continue to be attached to 1995 Rose Hill, Buttercup, and Buttercream since they are colors that I created/named and branded on my YouTube channel, and I’m willing to allow their sale on jerk cosmetics.
com in exchange for $250,000. I’m aware that my colors are top sellers and will continue to be lucrative for your business and that people will continue to recognize these shades as my creations. If we cannot agree on a buyout, I would respectfully request the colors be removed. ; I didn’t understand why I would buy back my own product.
She could say all day long, I created this and I created that, but no, you didn’t. And at some point in the emails, I did say to her, well, if if you created them, you have my permission to recreate them. If you created them, then you should be able to recreate them, right? Should be easy. when Jacine only really to be brutally honest slapped her face and name on the products.
In my opinion, though I’m not a business expert, I feel like what’s fair is you either stop selling the products altogether or they continue selling the products and you get affiliate kickback as the original deal was. When you take $250,000 out of a business upfront, that’s money that they could put into production, all of these other things, and you’re completely wiping that away, which could potentially cause a lot of harm to the business.
Beside for the product, Gerard Cosmetics did all the production, formulation, distribution when Jacqueline only slapped her face and name on the products. ; People who didn’t even know me were sticking up for me. ; So, what was her main reason for wanting to part ways? Was it the Karina Kaboom? ; She indicated that in the initial email, but like I said, we were talking about it for the two months in between and she was like, “No, I’m not getting hate.
” So, that wasn’t the case then, but what I do know that did happen in between was the Becca launch had happened. Do you think they were telling her like you can’t work with anyone else? ; No, but she made multiples of what she made with us in a year. ; Yeah. ; With Morphe on just the Jaclyn Hill favorites palette, you like ; um and she shared with me like what she was earning.
It was just a s like I said a significant multiple of what she had earned with us in an entire year. And I think it was just to the point where I can cut her loose. I got something better. After Jen’s post circulated on Reddit, Jacqueline herself visited Reddit to make an apology. She stated that she requested an overall buyout, which was the $250,000 versus the monthly affiliate deal that they had had previously in place.
She wanted to have $250,000 as the overall buyout because she had made $600,000 in the affiliate deal thus far from promoting her collaboration of lipsticks with Gerard Cosmetics. Instead, Gerard Cosmetics just removed her name and likeness, which seemed to be the only thing she added to the product in the first place, which was the deal.
If she had her name and likeness, she would get affiliate kickback. And they proceeded business as usual, not giving her a $250,000 payout. Saying all of this out loud sounds absolutely absurd to me personally that someone would think that just their name and likeness is worth $250,000 to a product when an entire company does all of the production, formulation, distribution, and an influencer has no involvement with that whatsoever.
It does take quite a bit of audacity to think you are worth that much. But also, this was at a time when beauty influencing promotion can make or break a cosmetics company. A bad review of a product could really tank those sales. A beauty influencer who was wellrusted and well-loved with millions of followers hyping up a product could also boost the sales exponentially.
So, was Jaclyn Hill overinflating her value or just knowing her worth? I guess I’ll leave that question to you. On the other side, I guess I will say that a lot of young and naive people entering into business do have a really hard time asking for fair compensation for what they bring to the table.
It seems from early on Jacine understood the value she brought to the cosmetics companies from her promotion and demanded fair compensation or more than fair compensation in turn. That does not mean it’s okay to screw people over continually for your own personal gain. It seems like Jaclyn Hill throughout her career has done this a few times.
But when she describes all of these events in her own recollection, other people’s hurt and pain over the events that took place are kind of described as an oopsies to her and something that just happened but was never intended and she was just going through a lot in her life at the time. So, well, things happen in the chaos. I do think a lot of people live like that, not understanding the pain they may cause when their own life is in chaos or because they themselves are hurting.
Would it be far-fetched to say that most people actually live this way at one point or another? But eventually, when the storm calms, if others got caught up in your storm, you have to acknowledge if they were hurt in the process. On the other hand, I often shut myself off completely if I feel like I’m going through something cuz I don’t want to be a burden to other people.
But also, there are people who care, who will want to weather that storm with you, if you are one of those people, too. In December of 2015, Jacine posted a video titled Trying to Make a Change about social media and negativity and how it was starting to weigh on her. ; I just want to get this off my chest and just talk to you guys like a real person.
Cuz I feel like sometimes you guys forget that I’m a real person just because I get on here and I’m talking about makeup and I’m just like, “And we’re going to blend out the crease.” And I’m just always like, like so peppy. I do not want this video to be taken in the way that I’m addressing negativity. I am in no way wanting anyone to feel sorry for me because I live a very blessed life and I’m very happy to do everything that I do on YouTube, off YouTube. I love my life. I do.
I know I can’t bring world peace. I know that I’m not God. And really, Frankie, taking things out of my trash can. In the past two weeks, I’ve had to disable the comments on two videos of mine. Been two specific videos recently where the negativity has been so bad and so overwhelming that it’s like bringing me down and it’s making me not want to go to my videos.
It’s making me not want to film videos. It’s making me not want to get creative. It’s making me scared of my YouTube channel. And I know that there’s hundreds and more like thousands of people out there that feel the exact same way as me that are scared to leave comments on my video that are scared to interact with me because of the negativity that has been happening.
This video is notable because it felt very vulnerable, open, honest, and like Jacine was having an open dialogue and conversation with her audience about what she wanted her platform and community to be. I think through this video, you can see why so many people loved Jaclyn Hill. There seems to be a genuine honesty and a way of bringing her audience in and having a conversation with them that made her so magnetic.
; ; Only 2 years after Jacquine’s 2015 video, wanting to make a change and Jacine’s career had exploded. To such an extent, she was collaborating with famous people and topping the YouTube charts. On July 11th, 2017, Jacine uploaded a video titled Get Ready with Me and Kim Kardashian.
It received over 7 million views in a month after its release and is also Jacqueline’s channel trailer. ; Hey everybody, welcome back to my channel. For today’s video, I am doing a collab video with this girl right here, Miss Kim Kardashian West, joining me on my channel today. This is not fair. I got sprayed last night by Jimmy Coco.
I have my leave in. You still look better than me on camera. Because Jacqueline collaborated with a Kardashian, someone who is considered a mainstream celebrity, this prompted many to compare Jacine to Kim. Some making fun of the way Jacine acted when next to Kim Kardashian. ; Minutes like I just cut her off so much.
I watch it and I’m like, JUST LET HER TALK. LIKE JUST LET KIM TALK, WOMAN. Like just look like so just glowy throughout the entire day. Like keep your makeup on because [laughter] everlasting. She’s got La Prairie, of course. Yes. She’s got La Prairie, of course. I know that. ; This is my favorite beauty blender ever.
I mean, it’s a beauty sponge. It’s not by Beauty Blender. It’s by Morphe, but it is my favorite. It’s pretty white considering how tan I am. I really am. ; Do you see how white mine is right now? Kim, can we please just What are we going to do? ; Oh my god. Like, honestly, I feel bad for me.
Like, I feel bad for me in this moment cuz do you see how white mine is, Kim? Like, why am I acting like we’re best friends? And then she’s just like so calm. She’s like, “What are we going to do?” like trying to like create conversation with my bitch ass. Like it’s just like all around a catastrophe. ; Others speculating that beauty influencers had such widespread influence that they were now comparable to mainstream celebrities and Jaclyn Hill was a trends setter in this regard.
Jaclyn Hill collaborated in 2016 with Becca Cosmetics to create an entire Champagne Pop collection. While Jacine’s name wasn’t inherently branded into Champagne Pop, people knew Champagne Pop to come from Jaclyn Hill and to be incredibly successful and a well- reggarded collection overall. ; I will tell you that’s something that we love about working with Jaclyn and why we’re so proud to have Becca X Jacqueline Hill and be part of Champagne Pop. So, grab your glass.
Let’s say it’s to host to Champagne Pop. ; Honestly, I know that this sounds so extremely cheesy and I don’t care. Um, Champagne Pop has always represented more than a highlighter or a makeup product. To me, it truly is. I said this when I was at Sephora speaking. I say this on YouTube, on Snapchat. When you look at it, I just want everyone to know that dreams come true.
I don’t care how cheesy it sounds. John and I have been through so so much struggle. One day, I hope to write a book cuz I don’t have the confidence to reveal all the secrets quite yet. But let me just say that the fact that I had a company like Becca with such great people behind it, so much moral, so much heart come to me and give me a chance like little old me who couldn’t pay bills and used to sit in the dark and light candles with this guy.
And the fact that I can actually see my face in a in a place that I shopped at for years, the place I used to go to my lunch break and couldn’t afford. Even if someone can’t afford it, even if you don’t own it, I just hope you know that from the bottom of my heart, Champagne Pop really stands for the fact that dreams do come true. ; A year later, on June 21st, 2017, Jaclyn Hill collaborated with Morphe to create her own eyeshadow palette called the Jaclyn Hill eyeshadow palette, which sold out within hours of its release.
; I I don’t even know where to start. I feel like I’m dreaming because I’ve literally had so many dreams, good ones and nightmares, about me filming this exact video. have no idea what to say right now cuz I just feel so overwhelmed with excitement. So bear with me, okay? I’m going to try to do this to the best of my ability.
So for today’s video, we are finally going to be talking about my palette that I created in collaboration with Morphe. It is called the Jaclyn Hill palette, which just sounds so weird for me to say, so I just call it my palette cuz I don’t know, it’s just weird to say like the Jaclyn Hill palette. It seems so like official. We actually when we first started collaborating on this, we actually wanted to name it something different.
Like we wanted to name it like the master palette or we wanted to name it Jacine’s life palette or and then we also wanted to do Jacine’s dream palette and we were like that sounds too much like Barbie’s dream house. Inside there is a clear plastic thing to protect the shadows that just went flying out across the room. That’s fine.
Here’s the thing. I keep throwing around sold out instantly, but let’s bring up some financial stats so you really get the gravity of how effective Jacine was at promoting these products and just how massive her influence and reach really was at this time. Jaclyn’s collaborations with Becca and Morphe were reported to have sold 10.
7 million and 12.2 million in EMVs, Europ, Mastercard, and Visa, respectively. 10.7 and 12.2 million. Glamour wrote an article about Jaclyn Hill titled Everything Jaclyn Hill touches sells out instantly. That was her reputation in the beauty industry. And if that’s your reputation, can you imagine how much brands would be willing to pay you for you to promote their products? Ultimately, what makes a successful beauty influencer? A successful beauty influencer or any influencer who’s constantly pushing out products is a
master salesperson. ; Okay, this is the shade twerk. And this is like, oh, it’s so yummy. Like, can we talk about the fact that it is like two different colors in one? The fact that it actually kind of has like some of this exact same purple in it. It’s like I don’t want to call it blue and I don’t want to call it purple and I don’t even know if I could call it royal blue, but it’s like it is just so showstoppping.
It is just I’m obsessed with that color. And if you follow me on social media, on Instagram and Snapchat, I will let you guys know the exact time it is going live soon as I know. Even if you can’t buy this palette, if you can’t afford to buy this palette, it doesn’t matter. Like, just the fact that you guys watch my videos, you like my photos, you comment, you engage with me, I’m just I’m so lucky.
I love you guys so much. And that’s why this palette is dedicated to you because if it wasn’t for you, my name would not be on this. I would not have had this opportunity. I would not be able to feel this joy that I’m feeling right now. So, I just want to say thank you so much to each and every one of you who support me along the way.
You’re so incredible and honestly, you guys make even the bad days a little bit better. I don’t even want to like overhype this collection up. Like, I want this video to be so short and sweet cuz I don’t want to sit here and be like, “It’s so amazing. It’s so creamy, it’s so buttery, it’s so pigmented, it can be yours right now for $49.
” [laughter] Like, I don’t want to do that because it’s just so good. It’s like once you get it, once you go swatch it, once you have it for yourself, like the proof is in the pudding. ; They make everything look like the next thing you need to buy. Something interesting about Jaclyn Hill to reflect on later in this video is that Jacine herself is constantly buying new things and has admitted to a shopping problem, over consumption problem.
; That’s actually not all of them. Like I said, I have a problem. I think I can be deemed queen of overconsumerism for today. ; So, when Jacine got on video and gushed about new products saying she just bought it and you need it in your collection, it could be possible that she wasn’t faking it or putting on a facade.
Draco was able to sell so many products and promote overconumption in the beauty industry so seamlessly and naturally, maybe because it was a genuine part of her life. About the Morphe palette selling out instantly, Glamour wrote, “The Jaclyn Hill favorites palette was set to go on pre-sale at the stroke of midnight, and the 25-year-old makeup artists followers knew they’d have to act fast if they were going to kick off 2015 with the $28 28 color set in their hands.
You know what happened then? Website crashing, purchases thwarted, makeuploving souls crushed. Same old story. Jaclyn Hill said the site’s IT guy had assured everyone it was ready to smoothly handle up to 1.5 million visitors at a time and some sort of hacking situation caused the issues.
Once the site was responsive again, the pallet promptly and predictably sold out. People have theorized before that this website crashing thing to instantly selling out thing that a lot of hyped products often do is a farce in order to promote products a sort of scarcity tactic to make you desperate to want to buy the product and that in actuality not that many people rushed the site at once.
But who am I to say? 2016 to 2018 was the height of the beauty influencer industry on YouTube with constant new product releases that beauty YouTubers were making entire videos about and promoting in turn promoting the idea of overconumption of makeup products. ; I tried really hard you guys to narrow down my products to just like my absolute loves loves of 2017.
Everyone has their own rules of course with their own channel but the way I always do this video is I pick out my most used most favorite products of the entire year. Some of these products did launch in 2017 and some of these products might might have launched in 2009. These are just the products that I found myself using over and over and over throughout the year and I just loved it so much.
What’s up guys? Welcome to my channel. I’m trying to crush this little knuckle ring on my finger that’s too fat for it. Today’s video is going to be a Sephora haul. It’s been many moons since I’ve done a Sephora haul and I recently did an order. Oh, look at my address. I ordered a whole bunch of stuff that I really wanted to try out.
And then um I got some stuff in PR too, which I’ll talk about the end of the video that is new at Sephora, but I didn’t buy it because it was sent to me. But if it wasn’t sent to me, I totally 100% would have bought it. Hey guys, welcome back to my channel. For today’s video, I’m going to be doing my current beauty favorites.
And the reason why I’m calling this my current favorites is because it is currently July 11th. So, it’s that awkward time of the month where it’s too late to call it my June favorites, and I know that this is one of the most popular and requested videos here on my channel. My subscribers really enjoy these videos.
This past month, I have done quite a few try-on hauls, and I’ve discovered some new things that have made their way into my everyday routine. So, those are a lot of the favorites that we’re going to discuss and some other things that I have secretly been using behind the scenes that I just can’t wait to share with you all. So, let’s start talking about the good.
Only because the beauty influencer industry was so fresh and new, people weren’t really tired of the concept yet. Kind of like laboo when they first hit the market or pickle Rick when it first hit smoke shops. The problem is unlike a laboo, makeup has an average shelf life. The way that so many YouTube beauty gurus were constantly promoting the next product that you need to buy wasn’t really factoring in this concept of a shelf life.
If the average person was buying as much makeup as these beauty gurus were recommending, you probably couldn’t use that much makeup in your lifetime. Even if you were a creative makeup enthusiast, I mean, look at these beauty gurus themselves who are constantly using a variety of these makeup products in their promotion, in their tutorials, in their creative endeavors, and still have to constantly give away makeup because they have too much.
They can’t even keep up with their overconumption. and yet they’re promoting it out to people and recommending you consume it. Ultimately, overall, it’s incredibly wasteful and offensive to the general public’s overall intelligence. And more and more shady business dealings were happening behind the scenes as well. In August of 2017, emails were leaked between Jaclyn Hill, her mother, Robin, and the CEO of Makeup Geek, Marlina Stell, who also made beauty content back in the day, as well as Marina’s team.
Jaclyn was in the middle of a collaboration with Makeup Geek to create an eyeshadow palette. But according to Marina Stell, Jaclyn Hill continued to string the brand along for months while simultaneously collaborating with Morphe and leaving Makeup Geek in the dark and eventually in the dust, likely in favor for a more profitable collaboration with Morphe.
; Basically, what happened was they had a collaboration. Yeah, he had his eyehadow palette. I still use it to say I don’t know if Manny’s watching this, but I still use that palette. It’s old as hell, but I’m still putting it on [laughter] my face. I love that. ; Yeah, Manny seems like a really nice person.
; Yeah, he was literally a dream to work with and so was Kathleen. Both like absolutely an angel. We love to work with like just uh it was just a really good experience. And so I was, you know, I’m thinking that ; with this collaboration, I was friends with Jacqueline. ; Not like this was a random stranger.
I’ flown out to see her several times. She came out to LA. We decided to do a collaboration and worked on everything. There was just it became a really difficult process of getting email correspondents from her. So my team and myself would reach out, hey, we’ve got these samples. Did you try your products? Do you like it? What do you want changed? Just like the whole process.
Everything was just very like took a long time. ; So you wanted to give her like a lot of say in in the collab and allow her to have, you know, a lot of feedback and give her opinions and pick the colors. ; Yeah. Pick the colors. You pick the textures. What do you want your box design to be like? We wanted her to be happy with this project.
; And this was like 2016. ; The process started in 2015. ; 15. Yeah. In 2015. ; Okay. you known her a couple years at this point and what was it supposed to be? An eyehadow palette, I’m assuming. ; Yeah, it was a 9wall eyeshadow palette and um it became a battle to get the a contract signed cuz we had a contract in place and it was like oh I just need to it was trying to narrow down the date to get the launch happening and she had other collaborations with other brands going on that time. I was like, “Okay,
that’s cool. Like let’s make something work. I can be flexible. I just, you know, I want this to work for everyone. I want everyone to be happy.” ; Cuz that’s there’s something legal with that, right? Where brands don’t want you obviously doing two launches at the same time. ; You have to space them out. Yeah. Okay.
; So, if you have an agreement with one brand, they want to say you have to wait x amount of months before you can launch another thing. So, it’s like, okay, well, let’s figure that out. Um, and so that date just kept getting pushed around and pushed around. ; In the text messages, Jacine says, “Why did you give Unknown Drama Channel permission to make a video about our failed collaboration? His video is filled with lies.
He said he spoke to you about it.” Marina responded, “I haven’t watched his video yet.” He asked me what happened and I told him it was timing with Morphe collab and Becca and that it ended on good terms. Jacine never signed a contract with Makeup Geek. Probably a bad move on Makeup Geek’s part, honestly speaking. And according to Marina, the brand Makeup Geek lost approximately $1 million allegedly due to Jaclyn Hill leaving their collaboration midway through.
Years later, both Marina and Jaclyn Hill ended up posting receipts of emails and text messages from this collab and onward about their general relationship and friendship onto Reddit. And apparently, original receipts can also be found on Beauty Guru Chatter. A few YouTubers also reported on this drama. Jaclyn Hill claimed that after completely abandoning the partnership, she thought they ended on good terms and had no idea that Merina had a problem with her.
Marina has claimed that Jacine abandoning their partnership midway through essentially caused the downfall of the brand Makeup Geek. They had a ton of unused inventory. And again, because everything Jacine touches turns to gold, they likely were really looking forward to this collaboration, were investing a lot into it, thinking it was going to do wonders for them and the Makeup Geek brand like it had done for Morphe and Becca Cosmetics and all these other brands.
Instead, Jacine leaves that collaboration for something that’s more advantageous for her. They have all this unused inventory that they tied up into the collaboration and allegedly lost a million dollars. And it ended up being this downward spiral effect. And I remember this conversation specifically. It was with me and my COO.
And my COO was the one that was connecting with her and and her mom and the project. He had asked me, he said, you know, we’ve if this launch is going to happen because she didn’t know what date, we didn’t want it to become an issue of, well, she wanted this date, we couldn’t pull it off because it takes time to get production going.
So, we didn’t want the other extreme to happen where, you know, she wasn’t happy that we couldn’t get product in time. So, I remember the conversation with my COO. We were on the phone. He was like, should we order the product or not? He was like, I’m still waiting for the contract and all of that.
I was like, are all of the shades approved? Yeah, everything’s approved. like and I had had made the decision that I very much regret now and everyone will remind me of that I didn’t get the contract signed first, but in my mind I was like, “Oh, we’re friends.” Like this is ; not going to run. ; There’s no way she would pull out of this.
There was no indication that she didn’t want to do this. Um it’s a huge financial opportunity. We were going to pay very well for this project. And I think a lot of people thought too like, oh, she backed out because she got paid more by someone else. This was definitely not the case. Like this was a huge financial um opportunity like well over half a million dollars that she would earn.
showed her the product was in house. texted her pictures like hey your product’s here look at you know are you excited still at this point never had any indication that she wasn’t ready to go with this project was all excited for it to launch and it came down to um this stuff is expired I told her I was like this is going to expire so we have to get this launched I need a date ; and she wouldn’t commit to that and said that she didn’t think this was going to work out too ; she has too much on her plate there’s ; too much on her ; but what what more did she have to to do
; I think because she was so focused on the Morphe collab cuz the Becca collab there was issues but I think she was just all banking on Morphe. I don’t know. They had a million dollars worth of product between the packaging and the ; So, how many units is that roughly? ; 100,000. ; From 2017 to 2018, Jaclyn Hill was at the height of her career.
; I hope that you just enjoyed that small little tidbit of what it’s like to live my everyday life. This is the most requested video on my channel, which is my closet tour. Yet during this time, Jacine’s personal life hit a low. That being said, throughout this video, I won’t be touching too much on Jaclyn Hill’s personal life, just because this video is more about Jaclyn Hill’s career, not her personal life.
And personally, I feel like that’s a whole other topic that I don’t want to dive into besides just briefly covering it since some of these are very important moments. On May 16th of 2018, Jacine announced that she’s divorcing her husband, John Hill, a musician and fellow YouTuber. I have absolutely no idea like what to even say for an intro in this video.
Like, this is definitely a video that I never thought that I would actually be filming. When I thought about the possibility of having to film a video like this one day, it would make me sick to my stomach. And now I’m sitting here. Life is crazy. That’s all I can say. I just know that in my heart I have to make this.
I I know that I have to give this to you guys. And I know that I have to close this chapter. I’m not about to drag our dirty laundry out on social media on YouTube whatsoever. So, I don’t feel as though we owe any explanation as to what’s going on and why things are happening. But at the same time, I do owe my subscribers who have loved me and supported me an explanation as to why I have been so absent for so long.
We did announce that we are divorcing. I just know I know what you guys saw John and I as, and that kills me because you never know ever, and I’ve always been the first one to say this. never know what’s going on behind the camera, whether it’s a relationship or it’s just someone battling day-to-day stuff, putting on a happy face for an hour and then turning off the camera.
And [snorts] John and I were the masters at that. John Hill had been her partner throughout most of her YouTube journey. So, it had came as a shock and a devastation to many of her longtime fans, especially those who had felt that Jacine let them in on a lot of things about her personal life. Yet, this had come out of the blue.
That being said, it would later be revealed that John Hill was struggling with many things behind the scenes, including addiction. Jaclyn did receive a lot of criticism online for how quickly after the announcement of her divorce. She sort of moved on and began dating Jordan Tori. ; And you should know that it is toxic and you do deserve better.
And I did not believe that I deserved better. I was really insecure. And that’s why I feel like God brought an angel to me just to show me like what love is and what I deserve. And if I deserve it, then so do you guys. Jacine collaborated again with Morphe on August 14th of 2018, releasing the Vault collection.
These were more eyeshadow palettes, four 10pan palettes to be exact, that Jacine claimed were leftover from the original Jaclyn Hill palette. Hey guys, welcome back to my channel. For today’s video, I’m going to be doing my first official makeup tutorial using my Vault collection. I am so excited that we have a launch date.
It is going to be releasing on August 14th. I posted about it on all my socials. I do not have a time for you yet, but the second that I know exactly what time of day it is releasing, of course, I’ll post that all over my socials. I really wanted you guys to see like the creaminess and the pigmentation and the blendability of these shadows.
I don’t want to sit here and be like, “It’s so amazing. It’s so creamy, it’s so buttery, it’s so pigmented.” Of course, yellows and golds and cranberries and oranges and some purples. You guys know that like I want to be very just very similar to this. This is like just me and I love it so much.
So, anyways, I hope that you guys enjoy this as well. These shadows are so beautiful, you guys. And I am so proud of them and cannot wait for you to get them. ; I don’t want to do that because it’s just so good. It’s like once you get it, once you go swatch it, once you have it for yourself, like the proof is in the pudding. That’s all I’m saying.
But use my code. ; But almost immediately, Jacine faced backlash for the vault collection as customers started to feel the palettes were much lower quality than usual. And ; I will say that I like the concept of this collection. I like that each palette carries its own color story. And I like having smaller, more condensed palettes rather than an overwhelming 35 pan palette.
I’m not saying her palette was overwhelming. I’m saying some of Morphey’s other palettes consisting of 35 shades of brown can be overwhelming and redundant. ; Linda was so kind to allow me to develop my own formula with them and have it pressed in my own unique way so that it goes on completely differently than their other eyehadows. Let’s be honest.
If you wanted to press shit into a pan and sell it if it were legal to do so, Linda would quote unquote be kind enough to allow you to do it because Linda knows that anything that carries the Jaclyn Hill name sells and Linda likes money. So, there’s that. And then on the back there is this big picture of me.
It looks like I’m screaming at you to go use my discount code. Honestly, like it should just have like a bubble that says use code Jack Attack in all caps. But use my code. I will hype that up. Code Jack Attack all caps. I haven’t promoted that in a while. Matt Orange. Oh, bitch. She’s still good.
She went over that swatch four times. Now, when I see people working a swatch like that, the reason for doing so is usually because when you apply pressure and work the shade into the skin, the warmth of your finger helps to manipulate the swatch to appear more pigmented than it is. We would never use this amount of pressure on the eye.
So, I’m not quite sure about her explanation for this technique. The first palette I used was Bling Boss, and I actually had a really time with this palette. Two of the matte shades in this palette, this one and this one, just did not work for me. They didn’t blend. They didn’t stay on very well. They just look patchy and horrible.
But I don’t really think you should have to change your eyeshadow technique with palettes. I think you should just be able to apply the eyeshadow, you know, blend it out, but like you just can’t with these palettes. But it’s also kind of upsetting how with every video I’ve watched with these palettes, everyone had some sort of issue with the palette.
; Jacquine ended up posting a video defending the vault collection. So, I’m just going to start off by saying that there have been inconsistencies inconsist inconsistencies in the production and just putting that out there. Just first and foremost, the outpour of just lies on social media about this collection.
I have DMs to prove it. I have emails to prove it. I’m not going to show them. I’m not going to like leak them and put out anyone’s name out there and make them look bad whatsoever, put anyone on blast. It is what it is. But I cannot tell you how many people have tweeted saying, “My palette sucks. It is so patchy. It is so dry.
It is so unblendable.” And I will reach out to them personally through DM and be like, “I am so sorry that you are unhappy with your palette.” Like, please let me send you another one and hopefully it’ll be better. I don’t know what happened. I’m working on this with Morphe and I am not kidding.
Every single person, every person that I have DM’d has responded back to me, except one girl, and I’ll talk about her in a second, has responded back to me and been like, “Oh, don’t worry about it. Now that I tried it on my eyes, it’s actually really beautiful and I really like it. Sorry, girl. You’re doing amazing. Keep doing your thing.
It’s hard to say how much fault of this vault collection lies on Jacine because of course she didn’t make the products herself. She’s not the business owner of Morphe. She just signed off on putting her name and face on the product and heavily promoted it. But Jacine and other influencers received the palettes, likely saw the quality of it, and proceeded to give it good reviews, and encouraged their audience to buy it.
Use their affiliate code so they could make money off of it. Even if the bad quality would show on camera, they would say, “It’s only $15 to make it seem like it’s not that bad.” Then when others started to receive the palettes and show how bad the quality was, it exposed their disingenuousness. Morphe eventually recalled and re-released the vault collection because all the palettes had such bad quality.
; Morphe told their customers that they fixed the palettes. Except, well, from all accounts, uh, that didn’t happen. When it was re-released, people had the exact same problem. ; We are going to be doing one eye with the old formula, the other eye with the new formula. [sighs and gasps] Are any of these honestly looks because they’re all coming out really bad and I’m not really happy with them.
; Leading many to believe that they have lied. simply because Morphe would rather repackage flawed product and sell it anyways instead of throwing away thousands of palettes that they had already made. ; In quick succession after the vault collection, Jaclyn collaborated with Morphe once again to release two sets of brushes.
; This video has a very special place in my heart because, and I know you guys are going to be like, “Oh god, here we go. She says about everything.” But this is the longest I have ever worked on any collaboration in my career, which is crazy, right? You would think like, um, you collaborate with a brush company and you just made brushes.
What’s the problem? Like why that takes so long? I have actually been working on this collection for over three years. ; It started to feel like Morphe was handing Jacqueline whatever unreleased products they wanted to market, testing her ability to sell as she would test her ability to lie. As she told her audience, she worked with Morphe on the collaboration for ages.
This was the beginning of when Jacine’s audience began to doubt her. Her credibility began to fall and her audience realized that all that glitters isn’t gold. ; ; Jacqueline started off 2019 ecstatic. 2019 was supposed to be the year for Jaclyn Hill because she was going to launch something big.
In the beginning of 2019, Jacine launched Jaclyn Cosmetics, which was supposed to be a wide range of high-end nude lipsticks. Side note, this may have been why Jacine was desperate to separate the Jaclyn lipstick products from Gerard Cosmetics. Jaclyn Cosmetics was supposed to redefine nude lipsticks, but instead it redefined lipstick scandals as # liipstick gate was brought to the public.
; I’ve been fascinated by Jaclyn Hill and lipstick gate wherein makeup YouTuber Jaclyn Hill released a line of lipsticks that were hairy, moldy, had bits of plastic. ; Oh my god. Is this plastic? ; No. ; And even pieces of metal. ; That’s definitely metal. ; Working at the MAC counter, I remember exactly where I was standing.
I remember the shoes I was wearing. I remember standing there in the front of Woodfield Mall MAC store holding a lipstick, saying to myself, I want to have a brand of my own. And at the time, I was on food stamps and there was no brand in mind whatsoever. But that was my first moment of like, oh wow, I really want to do this.
I was like, I really want to start a line. And here we are. It’s so heavy, like so heavy duty and it shakes. So, so for the people who do get it, when they receive a UPS box and it sounds like something’s broken inside, that’s when you know that it’s my PR [laughter] box. Got this white lacquer box and this hexagon. I’m going to open it.
Okay, I’m going to open it. I’m going to open it. It’s so crazy. Every single time I open it, it’s just like I can’t take it. Are you joking? It’s just it’s it’s too good. There’s an LED light in there. There’s like loose diamonds and glitter backdrop paper just to make it so fun and just like a fantasy.
I I live for it. This is my nude lipstick collection. We are launching with 20 shades of all nude. ; Okay, so lipstick eight. For those who don’t know, this was 2018. I think it was 19 actually. Every like nude shade that was the whole thing was like every like a nude for someone you know any person will find their favorite nude.
By May of 2019, Jaclyn Hill was facing significant backlash over Jaclyn Cosmetics. Customers almost immediately noticed issues about the lipsticks upon receiving them. Most infamously, that a lot of the lipsticks would arrive fuzzy. Most people weren’t sure what these fuzzy lipsticks meant, whether it was mold or hair fibers found around the lipstick.
There were other lipsticks that people would open and find contaminated with items embedded into the lipsticks. So people started getting these things and they had like rocks in there. ; Rocks. ; Well, like lipstick rocks. ; Yeah, little balls. Fuzzies. ; Fuzzies. Yeah. Animal hair. There were several excuses made for it. I mean, ; I remember that era.
It was so Well, I remember like watching the video and then watching everyone’s reaction videos. Jaclyn Hill, Jaclyn Cosmetics. I’m a huge supporter. Seriously, love you. I was so excited to buy your lipsticks. Today when I went to put on decaf, I noted there was a hard ball inside of it. What is it? Can I get a replacement? This is growing out of my lipsticks.
This is the color AmazeBall #jaclin cosmetics. Jacine responded to the criticism and concern over Jaclyn Cosmetics through a series of defensive tweets, which only further escalated the situation. One Twitter user posted a photo of her Jaclyn Cosmetics lipstick to Twitter and tagged Jaclyn Hill. Why is my Jaclyn Cosmetics decaf lipstick lumpy at Jaclyn Hill? This can’t be okay, right? Jacine replied to this tweet defensively, tweeting, “You posted swatches 2 days ago loving the lipsticks.
Now you’re wondering why it’s lumpy. It’s obvious this lipstick is used and not fresh from the factory. Like any other lipstick, if you use it and other products, have dry lips, etc., things like this can happen. Jacquine eventually deleted this tweet, saying she hadn’t seen any of the other customers complaining. More and more photos and videos of strange Jacine lipsticks started to surface, and even YouTubers began reviewing the lipsticks under a microscope.
; It’s like there’s more than one. Yep, definitely. Oh my gosh, I just pulled that out. I’m sorry, but you can’t make this up. [laughter] This is insane. This is insane. I knew what glad that was. And then I had another rep at the other lab that turned down her lipsticks because it was a rush job.
She had took her other buddy CEO and was going to make them at that lab and they said no because they wanted them done in 8 weeks time. That’s physically impossible from scratch. ; Crazy. Cassandra Bankson that did the she actually got them tested or like and that’s where she found the animal hairs, you know, like looked at the lab and they’ve been known to possibly have animals running around ; which is wild.
As the problem with Jacine’s lipsticks became undeniable, she eventually had to address it. It could even be a liability or a danger for many of them to stay on the market. And not doing anything was so incredibly damaging to Jaclyn Hill’s brand, especially since she initially denied anything was happening. Jacine issued refunds for her lipsticks and an apology video on June 12th, 2019.
Hey guys, welcome back to my channel. For today’s video, I don’t even need to give you an intro. You know why we are here. I want to address some of the issues that my customers are having with my first launch of my brand, Joan Cosmetics, and my lipsticks. The first thing that I want to address before anything else is the accusations that my lipsticks are expired, moldy, or hazardous in any way, shape, or form.
I’m going to put up documents throughout this entire video so you guys can see the actual proof cuz I’m not going to sit here and like read papers to you guys. I’m going to put it right there on the screen so you can see proof. So, number one, let’s start with the expired accusation. My lipsticks did not go into mass production until the same month that I actually launched my brand.
It was only a couple weeks before, couple weeks prior to my launch that we started actual mass production. Although I had been so in-depth with my formulation, my colors, and approving all of that, mass production did not go into production until right before my launch. And because my brand has been pushed back so many times, I actually already went through the same situation with a different lab several years ago.
I went into mass production, ended up having an issue while in mass production, and then didn’t launch my brand and had to go to a whole new lab because I didn’t want those issues to happen again. So, I canceled them and went somewhere else. The little black dots or black holes that you guys are seeing.
What these black dots are are actually oxygen bubbles and they are being lifted to the surface when my lipstick bullet is being cooled off when it’s going from a hot temperature fresh out of the vat and it’s going to go into my actual component and just be cooled down so that the component cap can be put on top.
In that process, sometimes those oxygen bubbles don’t make it all the way through and you’ll see little itty bitty almost like black like holes. It’s not actually like black holes. Again, it’s not mold. It is oxygen and it is 100% safe. It is not going to hurt you, but seeing those dots are not pretty.
The second thing I want to touch on is the texture and the grittiness that you guys are seeing in your lipsticks. And basically what this is caused from is the humongous vat. that vat is not breaking down all my raw materials because we produce so many lipsticks so quickly. Let’s talk about the white fuzzies. This is the thing that gets me going.
Because my lipstick component is a silver shiny almost metall-like material, my lab instead of using a standard glove that they would use in the lab, they decided to use white cotton gloves. They’re like fluffy white gloves because they didn’t want the standard gloves to put any smears on this component. Most people didn’t really like her video.
Some people pointed out the inconsistencies. How can Jacine say she fired her old lab and is using a new one if she posted on Twitter that they changed gloves two days ago? No, sorry. It’s the best lab in the US, but also a bad lab and she’s not using them anymore. ; While Jacine took some time away, ; obviously I have deleted all of my social media accounts.
Just get back to doing what I love, which is makeup tutorials. Like, that’s that’s my real passion. I mean, I don’t want to say my real passion. It’s one of my strongest passions. ; By March 2021, she would relaunch her lipsticks in liquid lipstick form along with lip pencils. ; A lot of people say that when one door closes, another one opens.
And I disagree because sometimes you have to break that door down. This is the most anticipated, exciting, and nerve-wracking thing I think I’ve ever done because I’m coming out with lip products. To the young girls out there who are different, who don’t fit in, who are bullied, who have a big dream and feel like no one encourages them, you can be whatever you want to be.
Even if a million people tell you no, it doesn’t matter. It is up to you. You are the only one in control of your life and your destiny. And that’s exactly what this collection represents. So, I say own your mistakes, own who you are, and be outspoken. ; A little later, she launched her lipstick brand in Ulta, which is an impressive feat for a business person.
going from the most disastrous launch of all time to relaunching your business into Ulta. But I don’t know if Jaclyn Hill was ever able to escape the reputation that the launch of her lipsticks gave her. The launch of Jaclyn Hill’s lipstick brand forever altered her trajectory as an influencer. Jaclyn Hill was formerly someone whose collaborations instantly sold out.
Whatever Jaclyn Hill touched turned to gold. People trusted her recommendations. They wanted what she was selling. But that forever changed after the launch of her lipsticks. She had lost the trust of the public. Jaclyn Hill tried in 2021 filming another sitdown heart-to-he heart with her audience about her life, her brand.
But did this attempt at honesty with her audience change her trajectory? ; Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. [snorts] [sighs] Dear God, I knew I would cry. Okay. I said I have to like get my tears out of the way. But more than anything, it hurts me for everybody, not just me. I am an empath, you guys. I am a cancer. I am sensitive. I am a nurturer.
I know that everyone’s like, “Oh, you just got to build a tough skin.” Well, I refuse to do that. It’s not fair. Like, I don’t want to get a tough skin. I don’t want to get calloused. I want to continue to be a sensitive person. I want to continue to be a kind person. I can sit here and literally tell you with all the confidence in the world.
I have never in my entire life, even before social media, I’ve never in my entire life left a nasty comment about another woman or a guy or a man or whomever. I’ve never done that. Now, of course, I was immature when I was in high school and would just like, you know, get upset with like the girls who are mean to me and stuff like that on Facebook, but like I’ve never in my life commented on someone’s appearance in a negative way in my life.
And do you know how good that feels to me after all of the thousands upon thousands of comments that have been made about me? I’ve never ever ever done it back and I never will because it is disgusting. ; Jaclyn Cosmetics was also owned by Morphe, but Morphy’s parent company, Forma, declared bankruptcy in January of 2023.
Jacqueline is not the sole owner of Jacqueline Cosmetics like she once tried to say that she was. All the information that has come out as recent has given us those answers. Jacqueline insisted a number of times that this was her baby, her brand with her name on it, that she put her money into and she was not going to let anybody be under the impression that she was working with anybody else on this brand.
This was her thing. No Morphe, nothing. Honestly, the big question is just like why lie about all of this? I mean, I guess Jacine at the end of the day wanted to seem cool by saying, “Hey, this is me. This is my brand. I created this. This is nobody else is helping me, you know, foot the bill for anything.
” And maybe Morphe also wanted her to keep it under wraps. So, it wasn’t looking like another Morphe collab. But clearly, at the end of the day, lying did them no good at all. Reports surfaced that Morphe had forged a new partnership with a private equity investor who allegedly provided Morphe with an estimated $200 million in exchange for a 60% stake in the company.
This partnership would allow for Morphe to begin global and retail expansion. As we know, since the sale, Morphe has completely rebranded and expanded. ; At the time, Morphe owed Jaclyn Hill $2 million in unsecured claims, likely because of how much she had done overall in promoting the brand.
On the 29th of March 2023, Bloomberg reported forma brands the bankrupt owner of the Morphe makeup brand in agreement with lenders Jeff Finance LLC and Cberus Capital Management to be acquired in exchange for 690 million in debt relief. According to a court filing, the company once valued at 2 billion had a tumultuous stretch over the past few years.
Sales hit 400 million in 2019, according to company documents, thanks to partnerships with celebrities and influencers, but the business deteriorated after Morphe cut ties with some of them for inappropriate behavior. A form of brands entered bankruptcy in January. Morphe and Jacine were like an oraorous snake that eats itself. Both became completely tied to one another, and with the downfall of one came the downfall of another, or at least the downfall of Jacine’s lipsticks.
Ultimately, Morphe Cosmetics relied far too much on influencers and influencers alone to promote their products. So many brands go directly to social media and influencers for marketing and promotion. Influencers nowadays are constantly promoting new products, leading to consumerism and overconumption being a core component of social media content.
Brands inevitably tie themselves together with certain influencers which they utilize over and over again to promote products. So, if the influencer has a major controversy, the brand ultimately gets wrapped up in it. Women’s Wear Daily reported according to Tribe Dynamics, 80% of the top 15 beauty brand collaborations for the first half of the year of 2017 were co- ventures with influencers.
Only three or 20% were collaborations with celebrities. Even in 2017, statistics were showing that working with influencers was becoming more profitable for companies. But there’s a downside to this as well. the parasocial nature that social media demands. Jacine was one of the first influencers to be highly involved with working with other companies.
Though eventually she set out to start her own ventures after years of promoting others products. Towards September of 2021, Jacine starts a vlog journey called Jacine’s Journey, which was centered around weight loss and lifestyle changes. other than revealing and announcing products I’ve worked on and like having that sort of excitement.
Putting that aside, this is the most excited that I have been for a video since I can even remember because I’ve never done anything like this. I’m starting a new series and I have no idea what I’m going to call it, but I want you guys to help me name it something. You guys are the ones who helped me name Jack Snacks and then also a few people were calling it Snacking with Jacquine and I was like, “All right, Jack Snacks.
That’s it.” So, I know that we can come up with a name together for this, but basically, long story short, I’ve been talking about doing this for a really long time. But, I have finally come to the place in my life where I’m genuinely ready to make major changes as far as my health, my wellness, fitness.
Let’s do our little weigh-in to kind of see where we’re at right now, and then I will head downstairs, make my favorite green smoothie, and head off to work. So, let’s go. [laughter] You know what’s funny is a lot of people hate the scale. I don’t really care because I know that technically I’m overweight.
I know that my body fat is too high, so I’m like, it is what it is. who cares. And of course, this is the time to make excuses. When you start your period, you’re like, “Okay, like, come on. I get to eat ice cream. I get to have cookies. Like, the cravings are worse, right?” So, trying to really power through that because I know that I’m going to indulge when I’m in LA. Make good decisions.
If I can do it, anyone can do it cuz I always give in to my cravings. ; I’m going to eat a sandwich. [laughter] ; You’re eating a sandwich? ; A full sandwich with bread and everything. I got an Italian sub from Pot Bellies. ; An Italian stuff from Poties. ; First stop, Malibu. Second stop, Beverly Hills.
am going to be good, but I’m also going to indulge. ; While the Jaclyn’s Journey series could have started out with a positive message to build occasional healthy routines in your day-to-day life, over time the series became more and more obsessive around weight loss and diet culture, as well as the aesthetic appearances rather than research around genuine health, which can look and feel different for everyone and shouldn’t have a certain look.
A dietician, Abby Sharp, goes into how Jacquine’s series could be damaging to her young and impressionable audience because of the way that she speaks about weight loss and diet culture. ; Put a Dorito in my mouth. I literally didn’t even want to chew it. It’s kind of like willpower at this point. I’m like, “No, thank you.
This in no way is going to help me reach my goal.” ; Uh, this is giving Courtney Kardashian sniffing a donut vibes. Folks, having the willpower to say no to something that you would like and want shouldn’t be a flex. And even if you ate the whole bag of Doritos, never mind just one, it’s not going to completely kibash your weight loss goals.
Bodies don’t work like that, folks. Eating the foods that we enjoy can and should be synonymous with our wellness goals. But to do that, we really need to take them off their pedestal. So, I say we just eat the damn Doritos on occasion and move on. ; Okay. But I’m going to measure my waist. I’m going to measure my hips.
I’m going to measure my arms, ; my thighs. ; Okay. That way I can see what’s happening measurement wise instead of the scale. So Jacqueline’s recently made a point to call out that she’s focusing on how she feels. It’s not about the way you look. It truly is about the way you feel. That’s what it comes down to rather than aesthetic measurements of success.
But so far we haven’t exactly seen that play out. ; In October of 2021, Jacine announced that she was launching two new businesses at once. I’m ininit.com and Jaclyn Roxanne. Jacine Roxan or JR is a jewelry brand. I don’t even know where to start with this brand. But I will say this, in today’s video, I’m going to be showing you every single piece that I am going to be launching.
I am launching 28 pieces. If you guys have followed me for a long time, and I know that so many of you at this point are just like my OG subscribers, and you’ve been here for the past 10 years at this point, you guys know that a jewelry line is probably one of the most authentic things I could possibly do outside of cosmetics.
And I’m in it is an affiliate website where Jacqueline sells some of her most loved and personally curated items which she is getting a commission for selling most likely. Hey guys, welcome back to my channel and welcome back to another Amazon musthaves. These are actually becoming my favorite video to film. I could honestly do one of these every single month because I place an Amazon order minimum one to three times a day.
I order everything from Amazon. And this entire table in front of me that is literally like five and a half feet long is covered in Amazon must haves that I have accumulated in the last couple of months. I don’t even think I’m going to talk about all of it because I think the video will be too long. ; While Jacine is often wearing jewelry, so a jewelry brand would make sense in that aspect.
I don’t think many people immediately thought of Jaclyn Hill and thought jewelry. I’m sure you can find a pair of hoops at Walmart or something for this same exact aesthetic, but and probably for cheaper. But hopefully these last a lot longer. Initially holding the necklace, it feels so lightweight. Like it almost feels like you’re holding nothing.
It’s such a weird feeling. ; Jewelry is something you can at times upsell or mark at a high price. So it can be a business with a higher profit margin. ; She had ripped off one of her designs. ; Yeah. One of the most like wellselling necklaces. a 10ear bestseller ; which Jacine had not she wore her necklace on Instagram was promoting that brand before and you know was a supporter of it and then came out with something that looks quite similar and ; Mhm.
; you know people were like this is weird it looks very very similar and she just kind of like blew them off ; and they even acknowledged it too. posted something that was I mean not direct but very like this is our timeless piece we’ve had for a long time and I believe Jacine made a statement too along the lines of like this is based off my personal jewelry collection a lot of people are coming to defense and say oh if you make it cheaper then what’s the problem or whatever that’s fine to have something that’s inspired
by it but to like completely rip off the design completely even though Lana’s jewelry is very wellknown it’s still it’s not this massive corporation this is still a womanowned brand ; right starting an affiliate business would also in some ways make sense for Jacquine she’s always recommending her favorite products.
Why not make as much money as possible off of her recommendations, right? Well, the problem is what gravitates people towards an influencer like Jaclyn Hill is the feeling that their recommendations are authentic. Initially, viewers saw someone like Jaclyn Hill in their apartment doing their everyday makeup tutorial and thought that Jacine was an everyday person like them who was just really talented at makeup.
They wanted to know Jacine’s recommendations and how she did her makeup so that they as an everyday person could learn how to do their makeup like her. But if people know that everything Jacqueline is recommending she’s only recommending because she makes money off of it, it tarnishes the credibility and ruins the relationship between influencer and audience.
This overall has been the experience between the beauty influencer and their viewers as constant products have been recommended and pushed out by the influencer and audiences are exhausted. and knowing that the influencer directly profits off of recommending these products ruins what was once an authentic experience.
In between Jacine’s new business launches, she announced her engagement to Jordan Tori in early 22. ; So, I humbly believe here on one knees and ask you, will you [snorts] marry me? ; Are you kidding me? Oh [laughter] my god. Unfortunately, only a few months later, in August of 2022, Jacine’s ex-husband, Andrew Jonathan Hill, passed away.
; He was clean for a little while there after our divorce, and he was amazing. Um, it was beautiful to see. And during that time, he did create music. He wrote an entire album about his addiction. He even made some music videos showing it. He even hired an actress to play me. Like, we worked on that together.
But it was a passion of him, his to help people. He talked about, you know, in the last couple of years about how he wanted to get right and he wanted to do addiction counseling and he wanted to help people get through what he went through. ; In October of 2022, Jacine launches yet another new business which was called Cozy.
Cozy was a lifestyle collection of cozy robes, PJs, slippers, which you wear around your home. I’m so excited to film this video that I need to breathe. Like I feel like I like took six shots of espresso. I’m so wired and amped up. I’m so excited right now. So, I apologize if I am just like talking your ears off. Another brand. Like, am I crazy? Okay, like, hear me out.
All right, I am only going to be here on planet Earth for a short time. We only have one life to live and that’s it. You guys are just so incredible and I just want to spend this life creating amazing things for you. That’s just how I feel. Like, why not? I’ve been knocked off my horse so many times and I keep getting back up and I’m just going to keep doing it.
So, I hope that inspires any people out there who want to start their first business. my brand new brand, Cozy. My new brand is called Cozy. You have no idea how hard it was to name this brand. We probably went through 50 names. Everything was taken. Everything was trademarked. Oh my gosh. And for this brand, I really didn’t want to name it something that had my name.
I didn’t want to make it like Comfort by Jaclyn. Jaclyn loves cozy. Like what? I wanted it to be different from Jaclyn Roxam. And I wanted to prove that I don’t have to use my name in order to create good product and hopefully sell incredible luxury set. The problem was another creator, Kayn Nicholson, came out and said that Jaclyn Hill stole the business name from her.
But because Kayn never trademarked the name and had limited financial resources at her disposal, she chose not to fight Jaclyn Hill over the name or sue her for it. When Jacine first announced the brand, a lot of people were like, “That name kind of sounds familiar.” And that’s because Kaitlyn Nicholson has a long-standing brand called Co, and they’re spelled the exact same way.
Now, if Jacine and Kayn weren’t in the same space online, and if what they were selling was completely different, then having the same name wouldn’t be as huge as an issue. Jacqueline has a huge audience, so people would most likely associate that name with Jacine’s brand. Her stuff would appear in search results over Kalin’s went on to talk about the costs associated with opening co.
She had to incorporate, she had to pay for lawyers, and there was a ton of upfront costs to get the business going. ; Trademarking is something that I originally didn’t do. I was very naive in the business world. Incorporating in Canada definitely gave me some protection, but not enough protection.
And it’s no excuse, but I naively thought that nobody would in the same realm that I would care about come up with the same thing. When I fell across this Instagram, this Instagram only had like 300 followers at the time and only one post from July. And remember that it was from July cuz that will become important in a moment.
So, I just posted a comment on that Instagram post which only had a couple hundred likes just saying like, “Hey, I don’t know if this is a brand launch of somebody, but if it is, and like maybe you didn’t know I exist, but now you might.” Cost Kayn so much money to file any kind of legal proceeding against her.
Her lawyer told her it would be around $95,000, and since she’s Canadian, it would have ended up costing her a lot more. Kayn decided that she didn’t want to legally pursue anything. She knew it would cause a ton of drama and she just wanted nothing to do with it. So, she decided not to file her trademark and walk away from CO for good.
I mean, I lose following through the rebrand and even if there’s work that ends up being kind of, you know, lost in in letting go of co, I do think that I actually may have needed this push. Jaclyn Hill starting so many brands in quick succession, one after another, leads me to believe personally that she didn’t spend a lot of time working on the quality of each individual brand.
Normally, when you start a business, that’s your life’s work that you’re announcing and putting out into the world. To start three within a short time span may not mean that those businesses were very close and personal for Jacine. And it doesn’t seem like they were that successful either. By early August of 2023, Jaclyn Hill announced that she was closing all of her brands, closing all of them at once.
; It’s taken me a while to get to the place to have the confidence and the vulnerability to sit down and have this conversation with you guys. But I want to talk to you about what’s been going on in my personal life and behind the scenes of the camera that has led to me making the decision on my own to shut down both Jaclyn Roxan jewelry and my cozy comfort line.
I have finally over the last couple of months had to really admit my wrongs and where I personally up as a creator, as an owner, and as a CEO. When things are up in flames or I’m feeling extremely unhappy or depressed, I tend to put on a happy face and act like everything is totally okay. Later, I come out and I say, “Oh, I had a drinking problem.
” Or, “Oh, I was depressed.” Or this, that, and the other. And it tends to shock people. At the end of the day, guys, I don’t really want to be a brand owner. I know that so many people thrive doing that. there’s people and personalities out there that like like a Kim Kardashian like I think that’s what makes them happy is like just to like create more and more brands and for me that’s not it.
; Jacquine then moved across the country from Florida to California for a complete fresh start and around this time kind of transitioned from YouTube to posting more on Tik Tok. Hey, hey, hey. ; ; Jacqueline started posting consistently
onto Tik Tok around 2022 and gained 1.2 million followers. Her videos consistently received hundreds of thousands to millions of views. While initially many fans were excited to see Jaclyn Hill from a new perspective and on a new platform in a new medium, much of Jacine’s Tik Tok content followed a similar format to her later YouTube content in which she was consistently recommending products or showcasing hauls.
But these Tik Tok videos were also done in a more natural environment as opposed to the beauty studios with the fabric backdrops of the 2016 beauty guru era. This also meant viewers could see parts of Jacqueline’s mansion, her decadent home, her lavish closet filled with designer items. For many viewers, it set in just how wealthy Jaclyn Hill was, how many products and items she’d accumulated, and how much wealth disparity there was between Jaclyn Hill herself and those viewing her content.
And during 2025, things started to take a turn when the world was drastically changing, but Jaclyn Hill’s content was not. Jacine continued to consume more and more products and showcased this all on her Tik Tok. District 12 is tired of watching District 1 spend their entire year’s salary in one day and then hop on the internet and complain about it, stating, “Oh, well, you know what? I have too much stuff and I never use it and oh, wo is me. Such a burden.
” Anyways, let me package up some of my secondhand goods and send it out to you District 12 members. I mean, your whole entire content is about pushing hyper consumption. It might have worked, you know, 10 years ago when you first started, but we’ve gotten into the day and age where absolutely anyone can become an influencer.
anyone can pick up their phone and start creating content and people are now gravitating towards normal folk who represent their everyday life and that’s just not you. ; Jacquine does claim that everything she gets rid of in her Tik Tok videos she gives away to friends and family or donates to women’s shelters. ; Cleaning, organizing, and just getting rid of things is a form of therapy.
Especially with my job, I purchase so much more than the average person. I constantly have PR coming in and out of my house. Things I’ve used, I give away to family and friends. And things I have not used, I always donate to women’s shelters. And this is supposed to be my everyday skincare routine, but a lot of the stuff I don’t even touch.
So, I need to either put it in drawers or give it away. Oh lord. Okay. See, things like this, like I bought this on TikTok. I’ve never used it. And like, am I going to? I don’t know. It’s so frustrating. Okay. So, I just looked this up and the ingredients are actually rated quite poorly. So, I’m going to get rid of that. But the dangers of influencers showcasing overconumption is the way that it normalizes it, promotes overspending, and can even make others feel shame for the fact that they don’t have the same means that these influencers do. They
might feel like because they aren’t able to buy thousands of dollars worth or hundreds of products of makeup, designer bags, shoes that they’re failing in life when in fact they’re completely normal and doing just fine. And these influencers are really the abnormal experience. Don’t get me wrong, we all have things that we may overconume within reason and at scale because as cheesy as it sounds, the society that we live in kind of promotes that.
For example, recently I’m forcing myself to stop buying new books because I have way too many if you’ve seen my bookcase in my second channel videos or my live streams. I mean, do you want small balls? I thought that you want big balls, don’t you? We all need to get multiple vaccines to ballmax. But this is different than being an influencer that’s promoting the constant purchasing of products or the overconumption of every aspect of your life.
Being a lifestyle influencer in this way means all of a sudden every aspect of your life becomes commodified, a product to be promoted, consumed or overconumed. Of course, everyone has different lived experiences, but there’s something very tonedeaf about continuing to make this type of content and push it out into the world during 2025 into 2026 when tensions around the world are reaching a boiling point.
People are struggling economically and digital conversations have shifted where people have become hyper aware of the fact that flexing and showing off over consumption and lavish luxurious lifestyles is out of touch in this current climate. There are many people online and in social media who we may even know have this kind of lifestyle but are not currently flexing it on the general public in their content.
They have recognized that that’s inappropriate to do. And then there are other people cough cough Jake Paul who have not evolved whatsoever and continue to do this sort of flexing style content. when you’re beating everyone, putting them down to the canvas, winning knockout of the year, $10 million here, $20 million there, you kind of are like, “Who’s going to who’s going to beat me?” And then you get beat and then you’re like, ; you’re like, “Oh, ; or overconumption content, no matter what the current environment represents.” So, here are some cases of
overconumption in Jaclyn’s modern Tik Tok content. There’s the Stanley Cup collection video that she filmed where she sorted what Stanley Cups she was keeping and what she was giving away. Now, at first that might sound kind of silly. You might think, “Stanley Cup collection video, where you’re keeping and giving away Stanley Cups made into an entire Tik Tok video.
How does one do that?” Well, imagine if you have so many Stanley Cups that it fills up multiple cabinets in your kitchen. There are only two people in Jacine’s household, her and her partner. How many Stanley cups do two people need? And yet, when she sorted into the keeping and giving away pile, she still kept so many Stanley cups.
At least in this video, I guess Jacine admitted to overconumption. ; My name is Jacqueline and I am a Stanley aholic. I have to say something in my defense. Stanley did send me every single cup that they launched in the year of 2024. That’s why I own so many. But it’s at the point where it just kind of feels like a clogged pore within my kitchen.
I’m like, why do I own so many of these? Like, it’s not necessary. But I’m going to pull the ones I don’t want, put them to the side, and give them to my friends. Do I need therapy? It gives like gray marble. Okay, now all I see is millennial. Goodbye. I talked myself out of it. I like that for myself. I think this is a good color.
That’s a good orange. I’m keeping that. The black is my most used. I use this all the time, so we’re keeping it. I use this green a, too. So, I’m going to keep that. I’m going to keep this Love Shock fancy cup. This is just so damn cute. And every time my nieces come, they always want this one. Keeping the neon orange.
Feel like this is just fun for summer. This whole collection was iconic. Like, I love these colors. I’m keeping all of them. They’re so different. ; They are though. They’re so different. ; I’m not a mental health expert, but I also don’t want this video to be just looking at different habits of clinging on to things, worldly possessions, without looking at the potential reasons as to why.
I feel like that’s a surface level analysis. So, I do want to put out there that it could be possible that Jacine feels this need to overconume or to not let go of all of these things that she’s accumulated because of maybe some of her past experiences. She might still be stuck in this idea of survival. Jacine has stated from her perspective, she didn’t have a great childhood.
She didn’t come from wealth, moved around a lot as a child, which may have meant she didn’t get to keep many things. Again, this is only my personal perspective. I’m not a mental health expert. Don’t take this as gospel. Jacine has made multiple beverage fridge restock Tik Toks, which if you’re confused about what that means, I initially was too.
But essentially, Jacine has an entire separate fridge just for her beverages. And she films herself fully restocking this fridge, so it always looks full just for the aesthetics of it. ; We’re going to black out the beverage fridge and do a full restock. Out with the old, in with the new. One must wonder if the beverages in the back ever get used.
I also have just a lot of questions about the beverage fridge. The amount of waste of plastic and aluminum. The fact that an entire extra fridge was bought just for beverages. Do you drink that many beverages? Are you using all of your Stanley cups to drink all of those beverages? ; Do you wear wigs? ; Uh, no, I do not. ; Have you worn wigs? ; No, I have not.
Will you wear wigs? ; Maybe. ; When will you wear wigs? ; Jacquine even says as she’s standing in front of her fridge full of drinks that a lot of those drinks she doesn’t even like. ; A lot of these drinks I don’t even like. ; She buys an entire 12pack of beverages just because those beverages look cute to stock in her beverage fridge before she even tries them.
And if a beverage doesn’t fit perfectly nicely and look really good in her fridge for the aesthetics of it, then it gets banished. So the point of the beverage fridge all comes down to the look, the vibes. The seaoss beverage, I get it. It’s supposed to be healthy. It’s 110 calories and it tastes like absolute sewer water.
Why do you have to be this height? Unwell. I don’t want this to sit over here in the middle of this. But it’s going to have to. But I want it to go like green and I want it to flow. Well, I guess this makes me unwell. ; Jacine did an entire series purging her shoes in her super giant shoe collection.
And while a nice thing she did was send some of her shoes to people who commented on the video who had to be her exact same shoe size, this aspect feels like a giveaway that helps increase engagement. And I don’t know, it’s like Jacqueline’s old stinky shoes. I personally wouldn’t want them. And I have to say, last year I actually did a giant purge.
Let me remind you what my shoe collection used to look like. Yeah, I used to have an insane amount of shoes. When I moved from Tampa to California, I got rid of like at least half of my shoes. I still feel like it’s just excessive and I’m not wearing them. I’m not using them. They sit there and collect dust and I hate it.
I don’t like the way it feels. So, I want to get rid of them. Give them to people that will actually enjoy them. First things first, these pair of Steve Madden heels just because I don’t think I’ve ever worn them. They’ve got like little marks on the bottom of them. Maybe I’ve worn them once, but we’re done.
These right here by Ray. I actually like this brand and the shoe itself is comfortable, but I’ve never worn them. I’ve owned them for over a year and I’ve never once worn them, so why would I keep them? This is a really tough one, you guys. I have owned this Versace shoe for probably 4 years. Like, you probably can’t even find this to be purchased anymore at this point.
It’s so sassy, the gold heel, but I haven’t worn it since I bought it. It’s really fun. I just feel like it’s I don’t wear it. Maybe I just hang on to these for now. Just Just for now. Okay, we’ll see. These are very summery. I bought them last summer. I did not wear them last summer or this summer.
They’re actually very cute. I just I don’t wear them. This is my problem is I put them on and I’m like, “Wait, they’re so cute and they’re so comfortable, but I’m not wearing them, so I’m getting rid of them.” While Jacine often makes videos purging her large collections, which could help combat overconumption and normalize getting rid of things one doesn’t use and confronting one’s own consuming habits.
She’ll often juxtapose those same videos with large spending hauls, which just leads all the content to seem out of touch, especially when she casually gets rid of tens of thousands of dollars worth of designer shoes. Jacquine did the blackout shopping hauls that a lot of influencers partake in, like a blackout shoe haul after giving away her undesirable shoes.
I fear I blacked out. Let’s do a shoe haul. I tried FaceTiming my best friend. She’s at a doctor’s appointment, so I’m FaceTiming you guys instead. This might be the most out of touch video that I’ve posted in a very long time. ; She filmed her house reset of organizing her home where her audience saw the amount of clothes, designer bags, a portable flat screen TV, and in general so so much that Jacine has accumulated over the years and crammed into her mansion.
I’ve had family in town for the last 5 days, and then tomorrow we have a new batch of friends flying in for Jordan’s birthday this week. So today is the only day that I have to myself. So, this is my ugly house life reset day. These are all products that are either basically empty or expired. She’s rich.
She made something out of herself. Why would she be ashamed of what she has or show it off? I’m confused. We see all the Kardashians showing their closets of Birkens. What’s the difference here? I mean, I guess where is the line? Throwing away so much product that you didn’t use before it expired. Piling it in your elevator to send it down and walking down your stairs is something no one should be ashamed of.
It’s just showcasing success. Are we sure about that? Jacquine will buy designer bags, film herself unboxing the designer bags she just bought, but in the video claims she doesn’t know if she should keep them. You bought thousands of dollars worth of designer items and are unsure if you like it enough to keep them. So, she needs her audience’s help to decide what she should keep or return.
; And you’re going to help me decide which one to keep, which one to return. you need to either bully me into returning it or you need to force me to keep it. ; Which is, in my opinion, something she’s saying just for engagement for the video. But the concept itself is ridiculous.
If you’re that unsure about an expensive designer bag, don’t keep it. Don’t keep it. Don’t buy it in the first place. What is that? Is that a novel concept? Is that so ridiculous? Why Why are you making videos being like, “Hey, I just bought a multiple thousand designer bag, but I don’t know if I should keep it.” You need to tell me what I should do.
What? Don’t keep it. Obviously, I did some online shopping and I bought two designer bags. Okay, but here’s the problem. They are both leopard print and I could not decide by looking at them on the internet which one I wanted. So, I bought both and you’re going to help me decide which one to keep, which one to return. That’s really cute.
I want to take these off, but I’m not going to in case I return her. But they’re basically just little gold charms. It does come with a strap, but I personally would never wear a strap. Now we have the St. Lauron. Oh my god, I just love shopping way too much. Oh my god, it’s gorgeous. She’s a clutch. You need to either bully me into returning it or you need to force me to keep it.
Did you see it already? Do we love her? ; Jacqueline films videos cleaning out her closet. In one video, Jacine discussed how the reason why she still has so many jeans is because she hates her body at its current state, which by the way, I think Jacine looks absolutely beautiful and she buys so many jeans because of how she feels. I’m sorry, but that is such an unnecessary amount of denim.
Honestly, the reason I have so much denim is because I hate the way it looks on me because I just don’t like my body right now. So, instead of doing something to change my body, I just keep buying more denim. That’s not the case anymore. we are changing this life. ; Jacine’s solution to that problem is to change her body.
But from that outside looking in, not only do I think she looks beautiful, but that what Jacquine is speaking to may relate to a more common experience of using shopping as a way to cope with other things happening in one’s life. Again, I’m not a mental health expert and I’m not going to diagnose Dan in this video whatsoever, but I do want to provide some basic information on shopping addiction here from a study that was conducted by experts just as general information in case it might be helpful to someone out there. According to a study titled
psychological correlates of shopping addiction, shopping addiction refers to excessive unnecessary shopping and is characterized by an inclination to acquire unnecessary items to feel pleasure and escape negative emotions. It’s a type of behavioral addiction where the person finds a behavior rewarding psychologically while getting engaged in the activity but may later feel guilt, remorse or even overwhelmed by the consequences.
Since the advent of the CO 19 pandemic, an era of digital dependence has also ushered in. An increased reliance on e-commerce platforms has accentuated the fertile ground on which these shopping behaviors have manifested. Essentially, this means online shopping could potentially escalate shopping addictions. And what do you think? Do you think influencers contribute potentially to this online shopping epidemic? constantly promoting new products to buy and also constantly adding new products into their own life. During the height
of the YouTube beauty influencer era, a common thing were Ulta or Sephora hauls. And something that Jacine and other beauty influencers would do is they would often showcase their large receipt off of their Sephora haul. And Jacqueline brought that onto Tik Tok. I no longer actually go to Sephora. I just order on the app.
Like you can do same day delivery. You guys, it’s like Amazon but for makeup. It is the most dangerous thing. I don’t know how long this has been a thing, but I’ve been doing it for like a year. There is my receipt right there. And no, this is not sponsored at all. And when Jacine showcases her full makeup collection, it’s a lot.
Of course, literally accumulating makeup is part of Jacine’s job, but Jacine herself admits that it’s out of control. Jacine has a makeup collection that she calls just her daily collection. It’s just supposed to be for her everyday makeup. It is not even her full makeup collection. And I don’t know. What do you think? Does Jacine’s daily makeup collection look like a little bit too much? Okay, so this right here is supposed to be like my daily/weekly makeup.
This is not my whole makeup collection. I have a closet of makeup. And then I have all this right here that needs its own separate organization. Don’t get me started. But this is supposed to just be the makeup that sits next to my vanity for my daily weekly use. Jacine’s daily use makeup is like 5 to 10 times the size of my entire makeup collection and I’m barely able to get through that.
; Okay, apparently this is what I consider my everyday blushes. So, I guess now would be the appropriate time to admit I have a problem. ; Eventually, plainly speaking, people became sick and tired of seeing this type of influencer content over and over again. The overexposure to overconumption being shoved in people’s faces was exhausting to so many.
Don’t get me wrong, overconumption is a problem that many genuinely struggle with. But even those who are struggling with something like a shopping addiction don’t believe in promoting it to the masses for their own personal gain and profit. Seeing influencers constantly pushing a new thing on to people every day or cleaning out their closet of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of items in one video and the next video doing a haul of new designer items starts to wear on people when the current climate is not wealth and
prosperity for many or even a climate that’s meeting people’s basic needs. But Jaclyn Hill kept posting the same kind of videos as her audience viewed them less and less. And eventually, Jacine noticed the lack of engagement that she was receiving. Instead of realizing the content she was posting may be tonedeaf for the current environment, Jacine tried to post a video that was maybe reminiscent of one of her old heart-to-heart YouTube videos where she had a sit-down honest conversation with her audience. Except
instead of talking about negativity online, her mental health, any of that, she complained about the lack of views she was receiving. I feel like I am trying to run through mud to connect with my followers. And I feel like these apps are now controlling who views my videos. And I feel like I get punished and penalized for not showing up and creating all the time.
Sorry, life happens. I’ve been doing this for 14 years. Maybe I’m a little burnt out. God forbid. But then I come back to Tik Tok and it’s like I’m put in like this Tik Tok jail. Now it’s like I put videos out there and sometimes I just feel like I’m talking to myself. It’s just I feel like my audience is really on Instagram stories.
Like my girls are there for me on Instagram stories. Like I really know who I’m talking to over there. But I miss the days of knowing who I’m posting my content for. Do the new creators out there. Do you guys feel like you’re connecting with an audience or do you just feel like you’re kind of throwing your videos out into cyerspace and like hoping that it’s going to stick? Like I don’t know.
And like my comments like I’ll post a video and within 10 seconds I’ll get like 15 comments and they’re all slightly the same. And I’m like, this inevitably led to Jacqueline only looking even more tonedeaf. People gave her a clear answer in the comments and in response videos as to why they didn’t want to watch her content, and it was because she was an influencer who was so privileged.
Her main concern was over the views on her Tik Toks while the world was burning. Optics-wise, it made Jacine look a little bit silly and ridiculous. So lately, I’ve been seeing on my posts that I’m just not getting the engagement that I used to. Um, I have like millions of followers, and usually I’m in like the hundreds of thousands, close to the millions for views.
And lately, it’s just not been the case. I actually noticed this recently when I came back from a 3-month paid vacation mental health break. And I was super excited to launch this new candle. And normally when I have these launches, I get millions of views and thousands of orders come through immediately. But for some reason, when I came back to sell you to reconnect with you guys, it wasn’t the case this time.
And I don’t know if I’m being punished by Tik Tok because I feel like I’ve been doing everything that I’ve been doing consistently. I just figured this was like our thing, you know, where I would have a new product and then I would sell it to you and you guys would be really excited and happy for me and like give me a lot of money and then I would wait a couple weeks and then I would surprise you with something new.
Jacquine initially took in the criticism with grace to her credit and ended up uploading an old school makeup tutorial in a similar fashion to how people would watch one of her early YouTube videos. ; You miss the teaching, you miss the learning, you miss the sit down, communication, conversation, connection and that is music to my ears because that is what I miss and that is what I love and that’s why I started doing this in the first place.
I am not good at short form. I never have been good at short form. I don’t feel like the way I like to do makeup really works on this app. So, today I have pulled out my actual camera for the first time in a very long time, and I’m going to film a makeup tutorial. Almost instantly, this Tik Tok became one of Jacine’s most popular Tik Tok videos.
Yet, afterwards, Jacqueline went back to making Tik Toks similar to her previous style, like posting a Sephora haul. ; I’m back with a Sephora haul. Although this looks small, it is actually quite big. And that is definitely what he said. ; Why is that when people so clearly prefer her makeup tutorials than her other content? My personal speculation is that this sort of consumerism style Tik Tok content is being done by so many influencers for two reasons.
It’s easier to do and you make more money doing it. It’s more marketable to brands. Doing a makeup tutorial takes a lot of time, skill, effort, and production. And through all of that, there’s less marketing of products involved. When you’re filming a haul or unboxing on a couch, there’s little production involved. You can do it in one shot.
And the entire time you’re advertising products, whether or not you’re working with brands in that particular video or affiliate marketing them, brands will probably love this and probably want to work with you. There are other numerous theories on behindthe-scenes ways that influencers will work around FTC guidelines when it comes to these hauls that I’m not sure if I should speculate on in this video.
Influencers have to legally disclose sponsorships and gifts. But what if they buy these products and return them later? Is that ultimately just dishonest influencing? Not necessarily that Jaclyn is doing this, as we can see when she goes over all of her products in later videos. Also, these influencers, as noted, make a lot of money off of affiliate marketing.
Jacquine has an entire Amazon affiliate page, and much of the items she’s recommending are incredibly expensive. Did Jaclyn Hill outspend her fame? Did everyone wake up to Jacine’s constant promotion of products and become tired of it all? How out of touch with the real world and real lived experience Jacine’s content was becoming? Or is Jacquine, master of social media, simply waiting on another rebrand to come out on top once again? In the year 2026, people have grown tired of inauthentic influencers. They just want to feel like
something is new, honest, and real. Is that too much to ask? And that’s all for today’s video. Thank you so much if you made it to the end. Comment your favorite social media era if you have one. I’m feeling nostalgic. And if you made it to the end, don’t forget to like this video and subscribe if you haven’t already.
And uh check out my Patreon in the link down below if you want to support the channel. I forgot to link it in the description in the last video, which I’m feeling like a silly goof about. I also started live streaming on Twitch under Cruel World Chats. That is a tongue twister to [laughter] say, but uh yeah. So, check that out if you like live streams.
I’m trying to get better at it because I am terrible at doing live streams. We all need to get multiple vaccines to ballmax. I’m going to be editing those down into comprehensible videos and posting those on my second channel as well. F ICE on my Instagram stories. I’ve been trying to post helpful resources in that regard and I will see you in the next video.
Stay safe until then. Bye.
