Why Rommel Said American Artillery “”Broke the Front Open
11:10 in the morning, February the 18th, 1944. The sky over the Anzio beach head is low and gray and streaming with rain, and every heavy bomber in the Mediterranean is stuck on the ground because of it. One aircraft is up. It is a Piper Cub. A civilian sport plane in olive drab paint, no armor, no weapons, a skin of doped fabric you could put a fist through.
The pilot is Captain William H. McKay observing for the artillery of the 45th Infantry Division. Below him on the road running south out of Curetto, he sees tanks and behind the tanks a column of men in the open. He counts roughly 2,500 of them walking south toward a beach head that has been coming apart for 2 days.
He does not dive. He does not fire at anything. He reads a map reference into a radio. 12 minutes later, 224 guns fire. Not one battery. 224 guns, British and American, scattered along a strip of Italian coastline, most of whose crews could not see the target, could not see each other, and had not known a target existed until the numbers arrived.
The United States Army’s own account of the next few seconds is written in the flat pros of an official history. The ground the Germans were crossing appeared to blow up and when the smoke cleared, the force had disintegrated. Over the following 50 minutes, McKay moved the same wall of fire to four more places.
Now go north 400 miles and back a few months to a headquarters on the shore of Lake Garda. The most famous soldier alive is sitting there watching the war in southern Italy and trying to explain it to Berlin. He has fought the British across 2,000 mi of desert. He does not frighten easily.
And his verdict on the Italian campaign came down to one sentence. The enemy’s tremendous superiority in artillery and even more in the air had broken the front open, broken it open, not ground it down, not bled it white, opened. That is a very strange thing for a field marshal to say about guns. And it is worth taking literally because Irwin Raml meant it literally.
The Americans had not built a better howitzer. Their standard piece was practically a twin of the German one. What they had built was a procedure. There was no factory for it, no serial number, nothing a prisoner could carry across the line in his head. It had a birthplace, a handful of forgotten names, and a development cost of close to nothing, and it had been demonstrated in the open in Oklahoma since 1931, while every other army on Earth read the reports and concluded it was impractical.
And here is the part that matters. It was not aimed at the German line at all. The first time it saved a battle, nobody in Berlin was watching. It happened at a burnedout bridge over a river called the Calor 40 mi south of Naples on the afternoon of the 13th of September 1943. Part one. Half 6 in the evening, the Solerno plane 5 miles inland from the water.

Two American field artillery battalions are sitting on a gentle slope above a ford, and the only thing between them and the beach is a road. They are the 189th under Lieutenant Colonel Hal L. Moldro Jr. and the 158th under Lieutenant Colonel Russell D. Funk. Both are Oklahoma National Guard outfits belonging to the 45th Division.
Men who a few years earlier had been school teachers and oil field hands. In September 1940, that division had been called into federal service and sent for its training to a dusty post on the southwestern Oklahoma prairie called Fort Sill, which, as it happens, is where the thing they are about to do was invented.
An aerial observer has just reported 15 German tanks rolling south out of Persono, straight down a corridor between two rivers into a gap in the American line that contains no infantry whatsoever. 200 yards behind the guns sits the command post of the entire fifth army. What Muldro and Funk did next is in the record, and it is worth saying slowly.
They stripped their own gun crews down to the bare minimum and sent the surplus men forward with a rifles to dig in above the ford. Staff officers went out onto the roads and grabbed every soldier they could find walking. They put the division artillery headquarters battery into the firing line. They put the band into the firing line.
A reserve was scraped together out of 15 mechanics and truck drivers. Then the guns opened up across the river at point blank range into the heavy brush along the north bank and kept firing at eight rounds per minute per gun. Eight rounds a minute. A 105 mm howitzer crew serving a shell every 7 and 12 seconds by hand in September heat for hours.
Between them, the two battalions put 3,650 rounds into the tip of that corridor. Seven self-propelled howitzers of the 27th Armored Field Artillery arrived in time to add 300 more. At sunset, the Germans pulled their tanks back. The official army history of the battle is not a sentimental document, and its verdict is one line.
The line had been dented and even pierced, and only the guns had prevented a complete breakthrough. The following day, the same division fired 6,687 rounds, the heaviest single day of the entire Solerno landing. And the 36th Division added over 4,000 more. First Lieutenant Hilston T. Kil Collins, a forward observer of the 158th, watched six German tanks assembling near a tobacco factory and called down his battalion. Five of the six burned.
Buried in the reports of that week is a detail nobody underlined at the time. Through the worst of it, the 45th division’s fire direction center was running two airborne observers and a string of observers on the ground at once and using them to keep four separate battalions of guns firing almost without a pause.
Four battalions, one nerve center. In September 1943, no other army on Earth could have arranged that. And the reason why is not really a story about guns. Now, why was any of this necessary? Because the German plan for Solerno was never to hold a line. Field Marshall Kessler’s forces did not sit and absorb. They gathered.
By the 12th of September, elements of the 16th Panzer Division, the 26th Panzer, the 29th Panzer Grenadier, the Herman Guring, the 15th and third Panzer Grenadier Divisions had all converged on the beach head. A force drawn from six divisions, completely motorized, organized into hard little battle groups, and poised to drive the fifth army into the sea before the eighth army could arrive from the south.
Watch how they fought. Tanks in front, infantry following in halftracks. The whole group concentrating fast at an exposed seam in the line and making a short violent stab. If the ground they took led nowhere, they pulled straight back to their assembly areas, ready to hit somewhere else within a few hours. If it did lead somewhere, they left a knot of machine gunners and mortar crews to hold it against anything.
That is not improvisation. That is doctrine, and it is old and it is very good. Since 1917, the German army had built its defensive thinking around one idea, the immediate counterattack. Do not pack the forward positions. Hold the crust thinly. Let the attacker in. Let him outrun his own guns and his own supply and then hit him with the force you kept back.
It is the most successful defensive concept of the 20th century. It broke the British at Comry. It is why the Vermacht survived three winters in Russia. And it tells you something important about the word in the title of this story. When a soldier of 1943 said the front, he did not mean the line of foxholes. The foxholes were the visible part.
The front was the whole apparatus, a thin crust, a reserve that could reach the crust in time, and the roads between them. The crust was almost bait. The fist behind it was the weapon. Take away the fist, and the crust is not a front at all. It is just a row of men with nothing behind them, which is precisely the condition that a professional soldier describes as open.

At Solerno, the fist swung and very nearly connected. The second battalion of the 143rd Infantry, sitting alone in that corridor, was surrounded and lost 508 officers and men in an afternoon. It was that close. 400 miles to the north, a man was watching, and his headquarters had been in Italy for less than a month. On the 17th of August 1943, Irwin Raml had moved his staff from Munich to Lake Garda as commander of a newly created army group B, responsible for Northern Italy.
He’d come out of Africa a defeated field marshal with a reputation the propaganda ministry could no longer quite use. In Italy, he found himself in a strange arrangement. two field marshals in one country, Kessle Ring holding the south, Raml holding the north, and no agreement whatever between them about what to do. Kessler’s case was concrete.
He believed Italy south of the northern Aenines could be held for 6 to 9 months with about 11 divisions plus a couple of mobile divisions kept back to deal with any Allied landing. Raml’s case was the opposite. give up the peninsula, pull back to the mountains, shorten everything, protect the industrial north. Everything in that disagreement turned on a single technical question, though neither man phrased it that way at the time.
Can a mobile reserve still do its job against this particular enemy? In October, Hitler summoned both of them to hear the argument out. Then in November, Kessler went to see him again and made a promise with numbers in it. He could hold the allies south of Rome on a line of prepared positions and he could keep them out of the northern Apenines for at least six months. He was believed.
On the 6th of November 1943, Hitler decided for Kessler. Raml was in effect dismissed from the Italian problem and within weeks he was on the road inspecting coastal defenses in France. Kessler won that argument by pointing at Serno. Look, he could say the counterattack came within two miles of the water. The system works.
Raml had watched the same three days and drawn the opposite conclusion. Both men were reading the same battle. Only one of them was counting the shells. And here is what should have unsettled everyone in that room, though it did not. At the American gunners had been firing over open sights at tanks 300 yards away. That is not artillery in any subtle sense.
That is a very brave crew shooting at something it can see. It is not what would break a front open. What RML was reaching for was something else entirely. The ability to destroy a formation the gunners could not see miles behind the fighting before it ever reached the fighting at all. And in the autumn of 1943, that capability existed in exactly one army on Earth.
It had been developed on a stretch of southwestern Oklahoma prairie over 15 years by officers nobody has heard of on a budget that would not have paid for a single Tiger tank. Part two. Spring 1931. Fort Sil, Oklahoma. A group of instructors from the gunnery department of the field artillery school put on a demonstration for anyone who cares to watch.
What they show is a full battalion of guns dispersed, firing together onto a single point of ground. Almost nobody in the United States Army cares to watch. The country is 2 years into the depression. Congress is cutting the military budget to the bone. And the men running this experiment are majors, not generals, not theorists with reputations. Majors.
The senior one is Carlos Brewer. And his career is a small mystery in itself. West Point commissioned into the field artillery. Then five years teaching mathematics at West Point from 1916 to 1921. Which means that while his classmates were in France winning the reputations that would carry them to high command, Brewer was standing at a blackboard in New York. He missed the war entirely.
What he had instead was arithmetic. He took over the gunnery department in the late 1920s and started asking a question that sounds too obvious to be worth asking. Why does every battery fight its own private war? Consider how a fire mission actually worked in 1928. In every army on the planet, a battery commander finds a target.
He fires around. He watches where it lands. He corrects overshort, left, right, and he keeps correcting until he has hitten the thing. Every battery does this separately because every battery is in a different place, and there’s no shared language for describing where anything is. If you want two batteries on one target, you either have them both grope their way onto it one round at a time, or you send surveyors out ahead and plan the whole thing hours in advance.
Brewer and his instructors threw the groping away. Between 1929 and 1933, they built something else, a firing chart, a proper mapboard. They surveyed the gun positions so that every battery knew exactly where it stood in relation to every other. They designated targets by reference to a fixed base point on the chart rather than by describing a hill or a crossroads.
Suddenly, the observer was no longer correcting his own batteries rounds. He was reporting a location, and a location means the same thing to everyone. That was the 1931 demonstration. It worked, but Brewer could not take the final step, and he knew it. He left the arithmetic in the batteries because he could not find a reliable way to do the computing at battalion level.
His successor as director, Major Orlando Ward, solved that problem. Ward built the thing that would carry the whole idea, a fire direction center, a single room where the data for every gun in the battalion was worked out. Afterward came Lieutenant Colonel HLC Jones who refined it and the harder task by far talked the rest of the branch into accepting it.
In 1935, a captain named Rex Chandler put the case in print, arguing publicly that a battalion commander and his staff should be directing the fire of three or more widely separated batteries. In 1939 came the graphic firing table, which is best understood as a slide rule built for a howitzer.
It turns a range into an elevation in seconds and corrects for the fact that this battery sits 4 miles from that one. Then two pieces arrived from outside the artillery altogether. The first was radio. Early military sets were amplitude modulated, temperamental, and unreliable in exactly the conditions where you needed them.
A major named Anthony McAuliffe, a name that would become famous a decade later for a one-word reply at Bastonia, looked at what the Connecticut State Police were doing with frequency modulation and push the army into developing FM vehicle radios. Clean signal, roughly 40 m. The second was an airplane the air did not want.
When light plane manufacturers asked to be included in the war effort, they were brushed off. So they simply lent aircraft free of charge to generals running peacetime maneuvers and let the results speak. The results were so obvious that the clamor became irresistible. In 1942, the War Department approved organic air observation for the field artillery.
Two aircraft went to each battalion. A Piper Cub painted olive drab fitted with a radio and modified with a window cut into the top of the fuselage behind the wing so the man inside could look up as well as down. And that little aircraft did something before it called a single mission.
Its presence overhead silenced whatever was underneath it. German gun crews worked out very quickly that a muzzle flash seen from above meant shells within minutes. So when a cub was up, they simply held their fire or spat out a few rounds at dawn and dusk and then went quiet. In some sectors, the man in the air ended up directing as much as 95% of everything his battalion fired.
One unarmed sport plane loitering at walking pace could shut down a whole gun line without dropping anything on it. So put it together and follow what actually happened when Captain McKay opened his microphone over the Albano Road. He does not adjust anything. He does not say left 200 at 400. He says where the Germans are on a grid that every gun position within 20 miles has already been surveyed onto.
The fire direction center takes that one location and computes a completely different firing solution for every battery. Different bearings, different elevations, different powder charges because each battery sits somewhere else. None of those crews will see the target. None of them needs to. And the mission does not have to stop at his own battalion.
If the target is big enough, it gets pushed upstairs. Handing it to division costs about 3 minutes. Handing it up again to core costs about three more. Then comes the piece that gave the whole thing its reputation. Time on target. The fire direction center broadcasts a countdown to every participating battery. Each battery works out how long its own shells will take to fly.
A gun 11 miles out has a longer flight time than one four miles out. And each fires at its own moment inside the countdown. Guns scattered over a huge area, firing at a dozen different seconds. Every shell lands in the same one. There’s no warning round. There’s no walking of the fire onto the target. The first thing anyone on the receiving end hears is everything.
This is the part that was genuinely unique. And it is worth being precise about why because the Americans had more guns is a lazy answer and a wrong one. Every major army masked artillery. Every one of them could plan an enormous setpiece bombardment days in advance. What no other army built was technical fire direction above the battery.
A standing machine for taking a target that did not exist 5 minutes ago that nobody at the guns can see and putting the weight of a whole core on it before the target has time to move. Now ask what such a machine does to Kessle Ring’s fist. A counterattack is not a line. It is a concentration in motion. It has an assembly area, a road march, a forming up point.
For an hour or two before it strikes anything, it is the densest, most visible, least protected object on the battlefield. And it is well behind the fighting, exactly where nobody could reach it before. Nobody had designed the American system as an anti-counter weapon. Nobody wrote that on a requirement document at Fort Sill in 1931, but that is what it was, a machine for killing things that gather.
Carlos Brewer spent the first world war at a blackboard. Neither he nor Orlando Ward has a film, a monument, or any real place in the popular memory of the second. What the two of them worked out on a prairie gunnery range probably saved more American infantrymen than any weapon built between the wars. If you think that is worth correcting, the like button is the cheapest way there is to do it.
One second and their names stay visible to somebody else. There was, however, one thing the entire structure rested on and the Germans worked it out. Everything, the whole apparatus, the surveyed grid, the countdown, the core concentrations hung on a man in a fabric airplane staying in the air. In February 1944, on a strip of Italian coast overlooked from the Alban Hills, they set out to prove that he could not.
Part three. The 11th of February, 1944. Hitler personally approves an attack plan that does not happen often, and it tells you what was writing on it. The plan was called fish fun, fish catch, and its purpose was to destroy the Anio beach head entirely by driving to the sea and cutting the American Sixth Corps in half.
General Eberhard von Mackinson’s 14th Army had at least 120,000 men under command. 70,000 of them combat troops drawn from 10 divisions. Facing them holding a perimeter of nearly 35 mi. Sixth Corps had fewer than five divisions and 96,000 men, many of whom had been in the line for a month without relief.
Now, here is the number that makes this the most interesting battle of the campaign. Sixth Corps had 452 guns. The Germans had 452. They had more. They also had the Alban Hills, which meant they could see down into the beach head the way you look into a bowl. And they had railway guns that could shell the harbor from beyond the reach of anything the Americans could shoot back with.
Every advantage that the word artillery normally implies was on the German side. And German intelligence knew before a shot was fired that this would not be enough. It is in their own appreciation of the operation. They expected that the Allied ammunition supply and therefore the Allied fire would be superior to anything they could deliver.
By the 14th of February, the beach head was firing about 20,000 rounds a day. German fire into that same beach head was assessed at not more than500. They wrote that down. Then they attacked anyway. But they did not attack blind. They had studied the problem and they had identified the weak point correctly and their plan to deal with it was in cold professional terms exactly right.
Kill the eyes. On the 16th of February, the German gunners fired the heaviest counter battery program of the entire beach head. It went first onto the 45th division’s gun positions, then shifted onto the core guns. At the same time, Luftwaffa fighters were given a new job on top of strafing the front lines.
Hunt the cubs. At 10 in the morning, the third division reported its observation plane shot down and asked for fighter protection. There was none to give. German shells had already ranged in on the airirstrip at Natuno and destroyed four Spitfires as they were about to take off and the field had to be abandoned in daylight altogether.
Every fighter covering the beach head now had to fly up from Naples. On the ground, the observers were being hunted, too. First, Lieutenant Donald E. Nolton, observing for the 161st Field Artillery Battalion, set his radio up inside the oven of a farmhouse southeast of a building everyone called the factory. When enemy tanks and infantry pushed his outpost back, he refused to leave.
He kept adjusting fire, killed two Germans with his carbine and possibly a third and then took a machine pistol round in the head. His own men left him for dead. The Germans captured him. And then the fire he had called down onto his own position drove them off and he was recaptured by his own side.
That is the atmosphere. Now watch what it cost the attackers. At noon on the 16th, the 160th massed the fire of 144 guns onto German infantry near the factory. That afternoon, one of the units on the receiving end broke and ran without permission. And of all the units in the German order of battle, it was the 309th Panzer Grenadier Regiment.
Its other name was the Infantry Lair Regiment. It was the German army’s own demonstration unit, the formation used to show soldiers how infantry ought to be handled, rushed down from Germany and attached to the third Panzer Grenadier Division on the eve of the attack. It lost a high proportion of its officers to shell fire and it came apart and still the Germans were winning.
On the 17th, they opened a gap between the 157th and 179th Infantry and drove into it. Captain Felix Sparks, commanding company E of the 157th Astride the Albano Road, was reduced before dawn to 14 of his own men and four strays from company H out of ammunition. All his supply routes cut. The third battalion of the 179th was down to 274 men.
In one day, the 645th Tank Destroyer Battalion lost 14 of its vehicles. By the morning of the 18th, the German wedge was 2 miles wide and more than a mile deep. And the survivors of company one of the 157th were holding a patch of ground in front of an overpass ringed by their own barbed wire with dead Germans lying on it.
Men who moments earlier had been calling out in English, telling Company 1 to stand at ease, telling Company One that they were coming. Then came the 18th of February, and the sky closed. It rained. The cloud came down. Every heavy bomber and every medium bomber in the theater was grounded. The day before, 288 heavies alone had been over the beach head. And now there was nothing.
Fighter bombers managed 120 sorties in the MC. At 2 in the afternoon, Colonel William O. Darby took over the shattered 179th Infantry and told one battalion commander to hold his sector with whatever troops he could find and another to go through the rear echelon and pull out every man still physically fit. The Cubs flew anyway.
11:10 in the morning on the day the bombers could not leave the ground, Captain William H. McKay found them out in the open on the road south from Kerosito, the tanks and behind the tanks about 2 and a half thousand men on the march. he read off the grid. The request went up from his own division to Core, and Core answered with more than half the guns on the beach head.
12 minutes after he spoke, 224 British and American guns fired in a single breath. The formation stopped being a formation. Then he moved the weight of metal onto four more targets inside the next 50 minutes. Five core level concentrations called by one man in under an hour in the rain. Look closely at what those guns actually hit. They did not hit the German assault troops in contact with the American infantry.
Those men were already mixed in among the foxholes too close to shell. What the guns hit was everything behind. The second wave, the third wave, the reinforcement columns on the road, the units still forming up to be fed into a battle that was being won. McKenzen’s problem on the 18th of February was never that he lacked men. It was that his men could not get from where they were to where the battle was.
And this is the pattern that had been building since visible now in one afternoon. The guns were not really fighting the German line. They were fighting the thing that turns a line into a front, the ability to feed it. The Germans threw in their reserves anyway because the prestige of the German army was at stake and Hitler had signed the order.
On the 20th, the first battalion of the 71st Panzer Grenadier Regiment walked out of its assembly area north of the factory into the middle of the salient in daylight under fire from every direction. Its companies lost their bearings and became hopelessly mixed. The battalion commander called a halt and went to work out where he was.
He discovered that the regiment which was supposed to be on his right was actually behind him. That the two companies linking him to it had been destroyed and that his own third battalion had not followed at all. Isolated in the open under fire, he could neither locate nor escape. His battalion simply came to pieces.
In 5 days, the Germans lost at least 5,389 men killed, wounded, and missing. An escaped American prisoner marched up the Albano Road. reported seeing German dead stacked like cordwood in piles of 150 and bulldozers digging mass graves for what he estimated at more than500 bodies. But the number that mattered most was not on any casualty return.
It was in a report written 10 days later by Mackinson himself addressed to Field Marshall Kessler and it is the moment the German high command in Italy said out loud what was happening to it. Part four. The 28th of February 1944, Mackinson writes to Kessler about the failure of Fishfong, and the document contains a piece of arithmetic that almost nobody quotes.
75% of all German wounds in that battle had been inflicted by shell fragments. The bulk of his casualties, he reported, had come from enemy shell fire. Sit with that for a moment, because a percentage that high is not a description of a battle. In a normal infantry fight, men are hit by rifles, by machine guns, by mortars, by grenades in the close, ugly business of taking a position.
Threearters of your wounds arriving as fragments means something different. It means your army was not being destroyed in combat. It was being destroyed on the way to combat. The prisoners said the same thing in planer language. Interrogated after Fish Fang, they came back again and again to two words for the shelling. Terrific and continuous, and described what it had done to their units.
Heavy losses, ruined nerves, collapsed morale. Whole companies on the edge of panic before they had fought anybody. At the peak of the offensive, for every round, the German gunners managed to fire into the beach head. Sixth Corps threw back 15 to 20. Kessler himself later in the campaign put his finger on the mechanism when he assessed Allied methods.
What he singled out was not the weight of metal. It was air observation, the fact that the enemy could see and therefore could kill off strong point after strong point. So the Germans understood it perfectly well. Then why couldn’t they copy it? Start with what they were firing. Germany had entered the war with an artillery arm that was genuinely first class and then spent five years diluting it with whatever it captured.
By 1944, half the guns in the Vermach’s inventory on the Eastern Front were French. General Hans Eberbach, commanding fifth Panzer Army against the British in Normandy, wrote that his own artillery included pieces from every major power in Europe, and noted bleakly that the British alone had six times as many guns as he could put in the field.
Think about what that means for the surveyed grid and the printed tables of Fort Sil. Every one of those captured types has its own ballistics, its own ammunition, its own range tables, its own spare parts. You cannot compute a common firing solution across a museum. Then there was ammunition. As early as the winter of 1941 in Russia, German heavy units were often sitting on about 50 rounds per gun.
In Normandy, the gun supporting Eberbach could fire roughly a tenth of what the British opposite them fired. And when the shells did arrive, they were not always shells. At Anzio, the Germans deployed long range 170 mm pieces that could shoot from beyond the range of Allied counterb fire, a genuine tactical advantage, unanswerable, and they achieved very little with it because something on the order of 70% of the rounds were duds.
By then, the fuse plants were staffed with prisoners and forced laborers who had no reason on earth to do careful work. The heavy railway guns tell the same story from the other end. The Germans were expert at hiding them, shunting them in and out of a tunnel near Lake Albano and shifting them constantly. And for a while, they shelled the harbor with impunity.
Then on the 13th of February, American fighter bombers put their bombs on the tunnel mouth and on a bridge along the line from Campoleon. The next day, two of those guns were caught stranded near the broken bridge, attacked from the air, and then shelled by the core guns with the fall of shot corrected by a Mustang pilot circling overhead.
One gun car was derailed, the other was destroyed. Even the weapon that could outrange everything on the beach head was in the end just another target being watched from the sky. Third, and least glamorous, the legs. German divisional guns still moved largely by horse. A horsedrawn battery could make perhaps 25 miles a day for a few days before the animals had to rest.
An American heavy battalion under decent conditions could road march up to 160. If you want a single image of what that arithmetic does to an army, take Stalingrad. One reason Sixth Army never seriously attempted to break out was that most of its horses were in rehabilitation camps west of the pocket outside the ring.
The guns and the ammunition could not have gone with them. And then the fourth reason which is the one that could not be fixed by any factory. The German gunners were not incompetent. They were by reputation and by results extremely good. But their technical fire direction lived at the battery and later the battalion.
Above that level, control was tactical rather than technical. You decided which units would fire and roughly where, and then each one worked out its own solution. They leaned heavily on survey parties going forward to plot positions accurately. They recomputed their firing data daily from fresh meteorological messages sent by teletype.
Every part of that is professional. Every part of it takes time. It is a system built for the battle you knew about yesterday. It is not a system for the column of tanks that appeared on a road 11 minutes ago six miles behind the fighting seen by one man in an airplane who has never met any of the gunners who were about to kill it.
They tried to fix the eyes at least. Germany had the right aircraft sitting in its inventory. The Fasler Storch, a machine actually designed with artillery observation in mind and by every account a superb one. It was also, like a great deal of German equipment, overengineered and too expensive to buy in the numbers that would have changed anything.
And by 1944, the sky belonged to somebody else. The storchs that did go up were hunted out of it. The Americans in the fabric aeroplanes knew exactly why they were being chased so hard. One of them, Bruce Gale, explained the German reasoning after the war in nine words. When they saw the cubs, they knew fire would follow. What they brought to Anzio instead was a secret weapon, and the story of it is almost unbearable.
The Goliath was a miniature tracked vehicle packed with explosive steered by a soldier at the far end of a long cable meant to blow gaps in wire and minefields. 13 of them went in on the first day of fish fun. All 13 bogged down in the mud. Three were blown up by shellfire where they sat and the other 10 were dragged away.
Sixth core did not even know they had been present until prisoners mentioned it afterwards. So the picture from the other side of the hill is not one of men who failed to notice. It is worse than that. They noticed early, described the mechanism accurately in their own reports, aimed a well-designed counterprogram directly at its weakest component, and discovered that what they were up against had no component you could bomb, capture, reverse engineer, or crash produce.
What they were up against was a habit of mind drilled for 15 years into thousands of ordinary men. There is no factory for that. read the German documents of that spring and the language keeps sliding away from attrition and toward structural failure, not we suffered losses, communications severed, units cut off from all support, runners who never arrived, a battalion that disintegrated without ever finding the enemy.
These are not descriptions of an army being outfought. There are descriptions of an army coming unglued from itself, which is exactly the condition the field marshal on Lake Garda had named when he said the front had been broken open. Somewhere in these interrogation files and casualty returns is your grandfather or your father or a man your family talked about at Christmas.
If someone in your family served in the field artillery, a battalion number, a battery, a story about a spotter plane, or a night of firing until the barrels smoked, I would be glad to read it in the comments. Almost nothing about the gunline made it into the popular history of this war. And the people who can still correct that are getting fewer every year.
There’s one more person in this story and by the spring of 1944 he was 600 miles away in France bent over a map of the channel coast and losing an argument. He had watched the Italian front come apart. He had written down why and now he was trying to convince two very senior men, neither of whom had been to Italy, that everything they believed about holding a coastline was already obsolete. Part five.
After the 20th of February 1944, the German army in Italy never again attempted an offensive of that size. Not once in the 15 months of fighting that remained on the peninsula. What followed was arithmetic. Between the 15th of March and the 10th of May, Allied air forces flew 21,688 interdiction sorties against the German supply system in Italy and dropped over 25,000 tons of bombs on it.
Kessle Ring’s Army Group Came out of that spring critically short of fuel and ammunition, which is to say short of exactly the two things a reserve needs in order to move and fight. At 11:00 at night on the 11th of May 1944, roughly 1,600 Allied guns opened fire along a 20-m stretch from the Terranian Sea to the abbey at Monte Casino.
The Gustaf line, the position Kessler had promised Hitler he could hold, was breached inside a week. The 10th Army fell back 10 miles to the Hitler line. On the 23rd of May, four Allied Corps hit that. And on the same morning, sixth cores came out of the Anzio beach head swinging. Rome fell on the 4th of June, two days before the landings in Normandy. Now, be fair to Kessle Ring.
He had promised Hitler at least 6 months before the Allies could reach the northern Aenines, and he delivered them. Standing on successive prepared lines in mountain country bought Germany far more time than RML’s plan would have. On his own terms, he was largely right. But look at what stopped working.
And when it was not the crust, German infantry went on holding ridges and river lines in Italy until May 1945, brilliantly on nothing. What died in February 1944 was the capacity to gather and hit back. From that winter onward, the German army in Italy could defend and it could withdraw, and it could no longer do the third thing, the thing Kessler’s whole strategic case had rested on when he beat Raml in front of Hitler, which brings us back to the man who lost that argument and who by the spring of 1944 was losing a second one in France. Raml
had arrived in France with a conviction that struck most of his colleagues as defeist. The invasion, he insisted, had to be destroyed at the water’s edge in the first hours because a reserve held back would not arrive, not would arrive late. Would not arrive. Move the panzers forward now.
Put them where the landing will be. Except that you are gambling on guessing the beach. Because the alternative is a beautifully assembled counterstroke that never reaches the coast at all. Against him stood his own superior, Field Marshal Ger von Runstet, the senior serving officer in the German army, and General Leo Guy Fonenberg, commanding Panzer Group West.
Their position was the orthodox one, and there’s nothing stupid about it. Hold the armor concentrated and inland well back around Paris. And when you know where the real landing is, throw the whole mass at it. That is how the German army had always won. Gar’s formative experience was Russia. where exactly that had worked and he thought Raml was wildly overstating the danger.
Gderrion backed him. Runstet did carry one piece of Italian evidence. He was wary of putting armor close to the sea because of what Allied naval guns had done to it at Solerno. Even the opposition had learned something from that beach head. They just learned the smaller lesson. None of them could settle it and run would not use his authority to decide.
So it went to Hitler. On the 26th of April 1944, he produced the worst possible answer. Three Panzer divisions forward under Raml, three under Runstead, and four more held far back under OKW control, releasable only by Hitler personally. Too few at the coast to stop anything on the beach, too few in reserve to deliver the hammer blow.
Neither concept, executed at half strength. What happened next is the Italian campaign again in a different accent. In the British sector, three full strength panzer divisions came in from Belgium and Poland and assembled near Kong to cut the Kaya road. Their assembly areas were worked over so thoroughly by British and American guns that the attack went in late and shaky and was called off in under a day.
The third parachute division, elite, fresh, brought up from Britany within days of the landings, was bled at roughly a hundred killed and several hundred wounded a day while the front was quiet. By the time the American 2nd and 29th divisions came at it near St. Low, one of the best formations in the German army had already been hollowed out by an enemy it had never closed with.
Raml’s own account of Normandy contains the same two ingredients he had named in Italy, the enemy’s great superiority in guns and an outstandingly large supply of ammunition. On the 15th of July 1944, he sent a report up through Field Marshall Fonluke for Hitler. It is not the language of a man asking for reinforcements.
The fighting, he wrote, was approaching a severe crisis. The enemy’s enormous use of material, artillery, and tanks above all, together with unchallenged command of the air, was driving German losses so high that the divisions were losing fighting strength faster than replacements could reach them. Two days later, on a road near Sua de Montgomery, an Allied fighter caught his staff car.
His war ended in a ditch. And here is the honest Kota, which comes from Guyire himself. Shortly before the strafing, he recalled Raml had remarked that it might have been better after all to have held the panzer’s back. Even the man who had stood in northern Italy and worked out what was happening to it was not certain at the end that he had read it right.
The verdict. So what did he actually mean? Take the word front seriously. It comes from an age when armies genuinely did stand in rows and by 1944 it had quietly stopped meaning anything of the kind. Most of what a commander in that war called his front was not in the ground at all. It was in motion or waiting to be.
And anything that only exists while it is concentrated can be abolished without a single yard of ground changing hands. The Americans had built largely by accident and while chasing a completely different problem in peace time a machine that walked straight past the men in the holes and went after everything behind them.
It could not have been sold to a general as a war winner. No muzzle velocity, no armor thickness, no silhouette. It was a surveyed grid, a printed table, a radioet, a countdown, and a man in a $200 sport plane. And the deepest part of the whole business is this. It was never a secret. There was nothing to steal.
The 1931 gunnery demonstrations were public. The arguments ran through the professional journals all through the decade in English while foreign observers took notes, went home and reported that the idea was clever but impractical, that real war is chaotic, that nothing can be centralized under fire. They were not wrong about the difficulty.
They were wrong about it being impossible. And by the time that distinction mattered, the thing you needed in order to copy it was not a blueprint. It was a decade. which is why the field marshall chose the verb he chose. It was not that the shells killed more Germans than the rifles did, though they did.
He was not reporting damage at all. He was reporting a change of category, the exact moment when a defensive line stops being a front and becomes a cue. One last thing about the pilot. On the 3rd of June 1944, Captain John Oswalt put a Cub down on a racetrack on the outskirts of Rome to make contact with the leading American tanks.
Within a few minutes, Captain Bill Holden landed beside him. And a moment after that, so did Captain Bill McKay, the same man who three and a half months earlier in the rain on the day the bombers stayed on the ground had looked down at two and a half thousand Germans on the Albano Road and picked up a radio.
Three unarmed fabric airplanes parked on a racetrack outside a capital city that had not formally fallen yet, waiting for the army to catch up.
