Why German Snipers Were Baffled by the Way American Soldiers Moved

If your father or your grandfather fought in Normandy, he may never have told you this part of the story. He may not have known how to tell it. Because what happened in the hedros of France in the summer of 1944 was something even the German snipers, the finest marksmen in the world at that moment, could not fully put into words.

They wrote reports. They tried to explain. And the reports kept ending with the same sentence. We were not trained for this. The morning fog in the Norman hedros moves like something alive. It settles low over the wet grass, curls around the base of the ancient earthn banks, drifts between the twisted apple trees that have grown here for 400 years. It muffles sound.

It softens the edges of the world. And on this particular July morning in 1944, it is doing exactly what the man in the hedge needs it to do. He has been in this position since before dawn. His name and his unit will not survive the war in any document we can name with certainty. What we know is what men like him wrote, what they trained for, what they carried.

His rifle is a Carabina 98K boltaction five rounds in the internal magazine fitted with a ZF39 telescopic sight at four times magnification. His camouflage is a zeltb barn poncho hand modified with strips of local vegetation woven through the fabric. He has not eaten in 11 hours. He has not urinated in six. He has moved his position by fewer than 2 ft in the past 90 minutes.

He is by every measurable standard that the German army recognizes in the summer of 1944 an expert. He is watching an American squad move through the field beyond the hedge row. 12 men. He counts them again. He counts them a third time. He is not counting because he needs to. He is counting because that is what he has been trained to do.

And the training has become as automatic as breathing. He settles the crosshairs on the second man from the front, not the first. The first is walking too casually to be the leader. The second is glancing at a map. The second is the one who will die. He exhales. He fires. The man drops. And then something happens that this sniper has never in three years of combat on the Eastern front in hundreds of engagements against Soviet infantry ever seen an enemy formation do.

The Americans do not go to ground. They do not freeze. They do not scatter. They do not lie flat in the wet grass while their sergeant screams at them to find cover. Within two seconds, perhaps three, of the shot, the entire formation explodes into a coordinated pattern of movement. He cannot immediately pass. Men are sprinting, but only in short bursts of two or three steps.

They are firing while they move. Rifles are opening up from three directions at once, and the sound is wrong. It is completely, structurally, unmistakably wrong. He hears no pauses. A boltaction rifle firing has a rhythm. Crack. The mechanical thunk of the bolt lifting. The scrape of the bolt withdrawing. The push forward. The lock.

The next round. Two to three seconds between shots. Reliable as a metronome. He has counted those beats for years. He has moved between those beats. He has repositioned in those pauses. He has survived because those pauses exist. There are no pauses. The volume of return fire coming through the hedger toward his general position is the volume of a company, not a squad.

40 rifles, 50, but he counted them. 12 men. He fires a second time at a moving target and misses. He fires a third time and misses again. The man he is tracking has already changed direction before his second shot leaves the barrel. His position, he knows with a professional certainty that requires no reflection, is compromised. He has seconds.

He pulls back through the hedro, low, careful, but fast. He survives. Not all of his colleagues in similar hedge on similar mornings across Normandy that summer will. That evening, in a field notebook that will eventually be collected, filed, and passed up a chain of intelligence officers who no longer have the institution bandwidth to convert observations into doctrine.

He writes down what he saw. He writes that the Americans did not behave the way the Americans were supposed to behave. He is not the first German sniper to write those words in the summer of 1944. He will not be the last. and to understand what he was seeing, what puzzled him, what filled the reports that flowed back through the German command system that summer with a note of quiet professional alarm.

We have to go somewhere else first. We have to go to a forest in the Carpathian foothills, 3 years before Normandy, and meet the men who taught the German army how to kill from a distance. The story of German sniping in the Second World War does not begin in France. It begins in the east. It begins in the summer of 1941 when the Vermacht crossed the Soviet frontier expecting a campaign of weeks and found itself locked into a war that would eventually consume more than 4 million German soldiers and produce. In the crucible of

its violence, the finest infantry marksmanship program in the world. The Germans did not enter the Soviet Union with a sophisticated sniper doctrine. They developed one because they had to. The Soviet Union had entered the war with the largest and most systematically trained sniper corps of any combatant nation.

Names that would become legendary emerged from that program. Leud Miller Pavlenko, 25 years old when the war reached her, a graduate student in history at Kev University before she became one of the deadliest snipers of the conflict, credited with 309 confirmed kills. Vasilei Zaitzf at Stalingrad, even Sidoreno names that the German soldiers who faced them learned to fear in the specific granular way that infantry fear the marksmen who hunt them.

By 1943, the German army had responded with a program of its own. The most rigorous training schools were established in Austria and Bavaria in 1943 and 1944, drawing instructors from among the highest scoring veterans of the Eastern Front. The curriculum was extensive camouflage, ballistics, range estimation, the behavior of wind at different elevations and different times of day.

the relationship between temperature and bullet drop and above all the discipline of patience. The specific and cultivated patience of a man who understands that his life will depend on his willingness to lie motionless for 8 hours in freezing mud waiting for a target that may or may not appear.

Two men will speak for that program in this story, though neither of them will fight in Normandy. The first is Yoseph Alberger. He is 20 years old in 1944, an Austrian by birth, a carpenter by trade before the war. He was drafted into the Vermacht in 1943, sent to the Eastern Front, wounded in the fighting near Voro Shilovgrat.

During his convolescence, he was identified as a potential sniper candidate on the basis of the marksmanship scores he had posted during basic training. He completed his sniper training and returned to the front where by the end of the war he would be credited with 257 is confirmed kills making him the second highest German sniper of the entire war.

His memoir transcribed and published after his death by the historian Alrech Wacka gives us one of the few sustained firsterson accounts of what German sniping actually looked like from the inside. The second is Bruno Sutkus. He is 20 years old as well from Memland, a region that has passed between Lithuania, Germany, and the Soviet Union so many times that his own citizenship is ambiguous.

He is credited with 209 kills on the Eastern Front. He will be captured by Soviet forces in 1945 and will spend the next 26 years in the Gulag system before returning to Germany in 1971. His field notebooks, preserved and later published, offer a rare technical window into how a vermarked sniper actually worked.

Neither of them will ever set foot in Normandy. This is important. This is the shape of the story we are about to tell. The German sniper program that reached its peak of technical excellence in 1944 was calibrated psychologically, tactically, doctrinally for one specific enemy. It was calibrated for the Soviet infantrymen.

The training was built around Soviet behavior. The reflexes were built around Soviet patterns. And when elements of that program were transferred to the Western Front in the summer of 1944 to face the American army, they encountered something that their entire experiential framework had not been designed to process. To un what the Americans looked like to those men, you first have to understand what the Soviets had looked like.

Soviet infantry in the specific and technical sense that mattered to a German sniper moved in ways that a trained marksman could exploit. When the lead element of a Soviet formation was hit, the response tended to follow a pattern. Initial shock, a pause, the formation going to ground, a period of confusion during which leadership reasserted itself, orders were passed, and a new movement began.

This pattern created what German sniper doctrine called operational windows. Moments when the trained observer could work, moments where second and third and fourth shot could be taken. The Soviet officer in particular was a specific and identifiable target. He carried a map. He often stood upright to direct movement.

His uniform, especially at the rank of lieutenant and above, was subtly different from that of the enlisted soldiers around him. The German sniper trained to identify him within seconds of first contact. Take the officer, the training said. Take the officer and the formation loses its coordination. The rest becomes easier.

By the summer of 1944, this doctrine had produced men like Alberger and Sautkus and Hetsenau, the highest scoring German sniper of the war with 34 confirmed kills working on the Eastern front against an enemy whose behavior they had internalized so completely that their responses had become automatic. And in the same summer on the other side of Europe, elements of that same doctrine were being applied by other men in other units against an enemy they had never trained against.

They wrote reports. Those reports, filtered up through the increasingly stressed German intelligence apparatus, began to describe something the analysts in Berlin did not immediately know what to do with. But before we follow those reports up the chain, we need to understand what the German high command believed about the American army in the months before Normandy.

Because that belief and the specific way in which it had been formed and the specific way in which it would prove to be wrong is the foundation of everything that happened next. In the spring of 1943, German intelligence produced an assessment of the American ground forces that would prove influential in shaping vermarked planning for the defense of Fortress Europe.

The assessment was not stupid. It was based on available data. The available data included the recent performance of American forces in Tunisia, specifically their performance at a place called Casarine Pass in February of 1943. At Casarine, the American Second Corps under Major General Lloyd Fredendall had encountered elements of Irwin Raml’s Africa corbs and had come apart.

Not gradually, comprehensively. American units advanced in parade ground formations across open desert. Officers had never visited their forward positions. Tanks blundered into prepared kill zones without reconnaissance. When German assault teams punched through the American lines, the response was panic, disorganized withdrawal, and in some cases the abandonment of equipment and positions without meaningful fight.

The German assessment, when it was written, reflected what the data actually showed. American infantry, the assessment concluded, was materially well equipped, but doctrally underdeveloped. Its soldiers went to ground under fire in ways that offered stationary targets. Its officers led from the rear in ways that made command paralysis easy to induce.

Its formations were rigid in ways that could exploited by mobile aggressive German units. The internal assessment characterized American infantry as materially welle equipped but tactically underdeveloped when compared to seasoned vermarked formations. numerous, well supplied, not in the professional judgment of the German staff, particularly dangerous.

The assessment was correct in February 1943. It became a historical document, unread and unrevised in the ways that mattered within a few weeks of being written. Because here is what happened after Casarine. And this is the twist that the German intelligence apparatus, for reasons that go deeper than any individual failure of analysis, did not register in time to matter.

The American army did not treat Casarine as a shameful failure to be explained away. It did not attribute the defeat to factors outside American control. It did not fire a few subordinates and preserve the command structure. It did something that in the institutional history of modern warfare was not unprecedented, but was executed with an aggressiveness that surprised even the men executing it.

It fired everyone who had failed. Lloyd Fredendall, the core commander, was relieved within days and reassigned to a training command in the United States where he would spend the rest of the war. He was replaced by George S. pattern. A man whose reputation for aggression was already established and whose willingness to reshape a defeated formation was well understood.

Beneath Frednol, the command chain was combed through with a systematic ruthlessness. Officers who had failed under fire were removed. Officers who had performed well but had been junior were promoted. Doctrine manuals were opened and marked up with the specific corrections the Casarine afteraction reports had produced.

And this is the part that will matter most for what German snipers would see in Normandy 16 months later. The corrections did not stop at the level of general officers. They went all the way down, down to the platoon, down to the squad, down to the individual rifleman’s specific behavior when he came under fire from an unseen enemy.

Every layer of the American army’s infantry doctrine was reopened, examined against what had actually happened at Casserine, and rewritten where the evidence showed it needed to be rewritten. The rewritten doctrine was distributed with the same aggressiveness, not filed in headquarters offices, not made available for interested officers to consult if they had time.

Push down, read aloud, practiced. The German army at exactly the same moment was fighting on multiple fronts, absorbing catastrophic losses at Stalingrad and Kursk and increasingly operating under a command structure in which honest analysis of failure was politically dangerous. Officers who wrote frank assessments of what had gone wrong found their careers curtailed.

Reports that reflected badly on decisions Hitler had personally endorsed were softened or suppressed. The institutional machinery that would have been required to notice what the Americans were doing and to formulate a response was already beginning to seize up under political and material pressure. For 18 months, the two armies moved into directions.

One learned one did not know it was falling behind. And then in June of 1944, the two armies met again in the hedge of Normandy, and a German sniper in a wet field on a July morning fired at a moving American squad and watched them do something he could not explain. The reports that would come out of that summer, filed by men whose survival depended on accurate prediction of enemy behavior, were the first clear signal that something in the fundamental mammatics of infantry combat had shifted.

The signal was not that Americans had become better soldiers than Germans. That is the wrong frame, and the men filing the reports were too professional to reach for it. The signal was that the American infantryman in Normandy was not the same soldier the German army had planned to fight.

And the reason for that difference, as we will see in the next section, came down to a rifle, a doctrine, and a habit of institutional learning that had been developing quietly, systematically, and unremarked while the German army was still writing operational plans based on an enemy that no longer existed. The German sniper in the hedge row that July morning did not know he was watching the end of an era.

He knew only what his scope showed him. 12 men who would not lie down. A wall of fire that came from too few rifles. A pattern of movement that his instructors had not described because his instructors did not know it existed. To understand what he was seeing and why he could not process it fast enough to survive the next engagement, we have to leave the hedge.

We have to look at four separate things that had been developing in the American army over the previous 18 months. Four things that on their own were interesting. Four things that in combination produced something the Vermacht had no doctrinal category for. The first was a piece of paper. In the winter of 1943 and 1944, an office within the headquarters of the first United States Army began issuing a periodic bulletin.

The bulletin had a plain and unglamorous name. It was called combat lessons. It was distributed to unit commanders down to the battalion level and in many cases below. It was not marked classified in any restrictive sense. It was meant to be read, discussed, and applied. The contents of combat lessons were what the name suggested.

After action, reports from every American unit that had made contact with the enemy were collected, filtered, [music] and compressed into specific practical guidance. Not philosophy, not strategic overview. The granular, sometimes brutal specifics of what had worked and what had gotten men killed. a machine gun crew that had positioned itself too close to a hedro and been eliminated by a single German grenade.

A platoon that had moved through a village at night without security and walked into an ambush. A rifleman who had fired from the same position twice and had been located and killed by return fire. The bulletin was updated with a frequency that today at the distance of 80 years still reads as remarkable.

In early 1944, it appeared at intervals of months. By the end of that summer, the intervals had shortened as the volume of combat experience being fed back through the system outpaced the doctrine’s ability to absorb it. One lesson appeared in multiple issues over multiple months. It was repeated because it kept being learned painfully [music] in different units, in different terrain, against different German positions.

The lesson concerned sniper fire. The lesson said in language that had been polished by editors and hardened by casualties that the correct response to sniper fire was never to go to ground. The instinct to lie down when a rifle cracks and a man near you falls is one of the deepest instincts a human body possesses.

It feels like safety. The ground is low. The bullets pass overhead. The mind whispers that if you can just be still enough, just small enough, the killing will pass by. The lesson from combat lessons said that this instinct would kill you. A stationary target, the bulletin explained in pros that had been sanded down to its essential meaning, was almost a guaranteed kill for a trained sniper.

A moving target firing back, contributing to the apparent volume of a formation, was a problem the man behind the scope did not have a clean answer for. The correct response to sniper contact was immediate aggressive forward movement. Fire at the probable position. Move. Fire again. Move again. Do not stop. Do not think. Do not lie down.

The lesson had been earned in Tunisia and refined in Sicily and paid for in Italy. And it was by the spring of 1944 taught in basic training at Fort Benning as though it had always been American doctrine. It had not always been American doctrine. It had been added deliberately by men who had read the afteraction reports and had concluded that the previous doctrine was killing people.

Every American infantryman who came ashore in Normandy in June of 1944 had been trained on this lesson. Every sergeant who led a squad in the hedro country had drilled it. Not all of them applied it perfectly. Fear is fear and the ground looks like safety even when you know it is not. But enough of them applied it.

Enough of them in enough engagements in enough hedge rows that the pattern the German sniper in that July field was seeing was not an accident. It was the visible surface of an institutional learning process that had been running quietly for 18 months. The second thing that had been developing was a rifle. The Springfield Armory in Massachusetts had been producing infantry rifles for the United States government since the 18th century.

In 1936, after nearly two decades of development by a Canadian-B born engineer named John Canantius Garand, the armory began production of a new service rifle. It was designated the United States rifle caliber 30M1. Everyone called it the Garand. The Garand was semi-automatic. This is a simple technical fact that carries an enormous tactical consequence.

You have to understand what every other major infantry rifle in the world was. In 1944, every other major infantry rifle was boltaction. The German Carabina 98K, the standard issue rifle of the Vermacht, was boltaction, five rounds in the internal magazine. To fire a second round, the rifleman had to lift the bolt handle, pull it back, push it forward, and lock it down before pulling the trigger again.

In practiced hands, the cycle took between 2 and 3 seconds. In hands that were shaking from cold or fear or exhaustion, it took longer. A round fired, a pause, the scrape and click of the bolt, another round. 2 to 3 seconds is not long by the clock in a kitchen. In a firefight, it is an eternity.

The Garand did not have those seconds. Pull the trigger, the rifle fired. The gas from the fired round cycled the mechanism automatically, and the weapon was ready for the next shot before the rifleman’s trigger finger had completed its return stroke. Eight rounds in the internal magazine loaded as a single unit via an unblock clip, three times the sustained rate of fire of any bolt-action equivalent in service.

General George S. Patton, who did not offer praise casually, called it the greatest battle implement ever devised. But the raw rate of he is not the deepest thing the Garand did. The deepest thing it did was invisible, unless you were the man on the other end. A trained sniper does not just watch his target. He listens.

A firefight has an acoustic signature. Bolt-action rifles produce a specific rhythm. Crack, pause, crack, pause, crack. The trained observer can count rounds. He can estimate the size of a formation from the sustained rate of fire. He can predict when individual weapons will pause to reload. He can time his own shots to the moments when returned fire will be at its lowest eb.

His survival depends on this acoustic mathematics as much as it depends on his marksmanship. When a 12-man American squad armed with garns opened fire on a German position, the acoustic signature did not sound like 12 rifles, and it sounded like 40. There are documented accounts from the hedro fighting in Normandy of German positions that held their counterattack in the belief that they were engaging a company that reinforcements must be moving up behind the initial contact that the volume of fire [music] could not be produced by the number of men their

observations suggested were actually present. When the German positions finally moved forward against what they believed was a depleted enemy, they discovered that the entire fire volume had come from a single platoon. The German sniper in the hedge that July morning was making the same calculation. He was hearing a company.

He was counting a squad. His mathematics was giving him two answers that could not both be true, and he had no time to work out which one was wrong before his position was compromised. This is the third twist, and it is not the one you might expect. The Garan’s advantage was not primarily that it fired faster.

The Garand’s advantage was that it broke the acoustic prediction model that the German sniper’s entire training had been built upon. He could no longer estimate enemy strength by sound. He could no longer time his own movements to the pauses in the enemy’s fire because the pauses did not exist. Every input his ears were feeding him was wrong.

There is a name that survived the war and it belongs in this story. Lieutenant General Fritz Bioline. Bioline was 45 years old in 1944. A veteran of North Africa, a man who had served under Raml and who did not overstate the capabilities of his enemies. He commanded the Panzelair Division, one of the most experienced armored formations in the German army.

[music] His division was engaged in the Hedra fighting west of Slow in July of 1944. Bioline’s post-war interrogation reports filed with US Army historians preparing the official history of the campaign describe American infantry firepower as consistently higher than what his division’s tactical planning had anticipated.

His men were being pinned in positions they should have been able to break out of. His counterattacks were meeting return fire in volumes. His tactical training had prepared him to expect from formations two or three times the size of what he was actually facing. Baine did not know why he knew what the third thing that had been developing in the American army was neither a document nor a weapon. It was a way of moving.

American infantry doctrine as codified in field manual 7 to10 and refined through the afteraction reports of North Africa, Sicily, and Italy organized the 12-man rifle squad around a specific tactical principle. The squad was divided into two elements. One element called AEL was built around the squad’s single Browning automatic rifle.

The BR was a large caliber automatic rifle, air cooled, magazine fed 20 rounds at a time, capable of sustained automatic fire. Abel’s function in a firefight was to produce the base of fire, to keep the enemy’s heads down, to make it impossible for the defender to raise his own weapon to a firing position without accepting an unacceptable probability of being hit.

The other element called Baker was the maneuver element. While Abel produced the fire that pinned the enemy in place, Baker moved around a flank toward a covered position into grenade range of the German fighting position. When Baker was set, Baker became the base of fire and Abel moved. This is fire and movement.

It is not new in the history of infantry combat. It appears in tactical treatises going back to the American Civil War and beyond. What was new was that the American army in 1944 was teaching it consistently, drilling it at the squad level and executing it in combed with a reliability that did not depend on the presence of an officer to give the order.

A German assault group commander who observed an American squad in contact was looking at two things happening at once. fire from one direction, movement from another, the two switching roles every 20 or 30 seconds. [music] His training told him to identify the leader and shoot the leader, but he could not identify the leader.

The squad was operating without visible command. Decisions were being made at the level of twoman buddy teams. Fire teams were reorganizing themselves without waiting for orders. The targeting hierarchy that the German sniper had been trained to apply against Soviet infantry was built on the assumption that decapitating leadership would freeze the formation.

The American formation had no visible head to decapitate. Every soldier in the squad, if his sergeant was hit, knew what to do next. Every fire team leader, if his squad leader was hit, could assume command without the transition being visible to an observer. This is the fourth thing and it is the thing that produced the specific phenomenon that gives this story its name because the fourth thing was not a document, a rifle or a doctrine.

The fourth thing was what happened when documents and rifles and doctrine were applied to a specific piece of ground by specific men. We know the names of two of those men. They served in the same division. They were in the same country at the same time. They saw the hedro country from the inside during the same weeks in June and July of 1944.

their experiences preserved in citations and afteraction reports and interviews conducted years later give us a window into what the American infantry was actually doing when the German snipers were writing their puzzled reports. The first man was Walter David Elers. He was 23 years old on the morning of June 9, 1944.

He was from Junction [clears throat] City, Kansas. He was a staff sergeant in company L of the 18th Infantry Regiment, First Infantry Division, the Big Red One. He had enlisted with his older brother Roland in 1940. They had fought together in North Africa and Sicily. On June 6th, 1944, they had both been part of the assault on Omaha Beach, though in different landing craft.

Roland Elers had been killed on D-Day in the same landings. Walter did not know this yet on the 9th of June. He would not know for weeks. On the 9th and 10th of June, near the village of Gavil in the Norman Hedro country, Walter Elers led his squad in a series of actions that would eventually result in his receiving the Medal of Honor.

The specific details are recorded in his citation and they are worth reading against what we have been describing. Elers led his squad against a series of German positions that had pinned other elements of his company. He did not lead by remaining at the rear. He did not lead by giving orders that his men were expected to execute while he supervised from cover.

He led by moving forward and firing by identifying enemy positions and closing on them by drawing fire onto himself so that his squad could maneuver against the positions that were shooting at him. Over two days, his squad destroyed multiple German machine gun nests and mortar positions. On the second day, when it was ordered to withdraw under heavy German fire, Elers and one of his riflemen stayed behind to cover the withdrawal.

A German rifleman hit both of them. Elers was hit in the back. He continued firing. He carried his wounded rifleman to safety. He returned under fire to recover a Browning automatic rifle that his squad would need to continue operating. His citation does not describe him as a superhero. His citation describes him as a soldier who applied the doctrine he had been trained on with unusual persistence under conditions that would have justified giving up.

He did what combat lessons said to do. He moved. He fired. He did not go to ground. He did not wait for the situation to clarify. He acted on the assumption that the situation would only get worse if he stopped. He survived the war. He came home to Kansas. He worked as a benefits counselor for the Veterans Administration for 34 years.

He gave interviews late in his life in which he was consistently almost stubbornly reluctant to describe what he had done as heroism. He described it as doing what he had been trained to do. He described it as what his brother would have done. He died in 2014 at the age of 92. The second man was William Elmo Miko, Sergeant Miko, First Infantry Division like Elers, a rifleman.

His name is less wellknown. He gave an interview to a combat correspondent in Normandy in the summer of 1944, and what he described has been preserved in the record of the American National Rifle Association’s coverage of small arms use in the campaign. Miko’s specific problem in the first weeks of Normandy was the tree sniper.

Tree snipers had been effective in the Pacific theater where Japanese soldiers concealed themselves in jungle canopy to fire down on American units that were not looking up. In the early weeks of the Normandy campaign, German snipers deployed the same tactic in the dense vegetation of the Bkage. The results at first were exactly as effective as the Pacific experience predicted.

American units were unprepared to search upward. Casualties from tree sniper fire, especially in the first week after the landings were significant. Miko personally accounted for five German snipers he shot out of trees in the hedro country. He described the technique to the combat correspondent. Constant upward surveillance.

every man in the squad responsible for a sector of the tree line. The Garand made it possible to place multiple aimed shots into a tree position rapidly without cycling a bolt without giving the sniper time to reposition or return effective fire. Here is the twist that the numbers reveal.

The tree sniper tactic which had been so effective in the first weeks of the campaign faded from the German tactical repertoire in the American sectors by mid July. It faded quickly not because the American army deployed dedicated counter sniper teams. The American army did not have a systematic sniper program comparable to the German or Soviet programs.

This was a recognized institutional gap. The tree sniper tactic faded because ordinary American riflemen armed with garns learned to look up. And when they saw movement in a tree, they could place four or five aimed shots into the position in the time it would take a bolt-actioned rifleman to fire one. A German sniper in a tree engaged by a grande equipped squad that had learned to search upward was not a hunter.
