On that ridge, dug into frozen earth along a 2,000-yd front near a tiny Hamlet called Dom Butgenbach, sat the 2nd Battalion of the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, the Big Red One.

The same division that had watched the 10th Panzer die at El Guettar. The same division that had stormed Omaha Beach. The battalion commander was Lieutenant Colonel Darrell Daniel. He had roughly 600 men, a handful of tank destroyers, and the full weight of the 1st Division’s artillery behind him, the 33rd Field Artillery Battalion, the 413th Anti-Aircraft Battalion, and every gun that 5th Corps could reach.

The Gegenstoß was not a tool they could pick up or put down depending on circumstances.

It was the grammar of how they fought. It was taught at every level, reinforced by every success from Poland to France to Russia. Embedded so deeply in the culture of the officer corps that questioning it was like questioning gravity. You do not argue with gravity. You do not ask whether gravity still applies. You counterattack. In the American system, the forward observer, the fire direction center, the precomputed tapes, the 3-minute loop, the simultaneous impact, had turned that gravity into a killing floor.

He had spent 5 days on a hilltop without food calling fire on a road he could see from his foxhole watching columns of German armor burn below him while mortar rounds fell around his position.

He and Robert Weiss were later awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. The 230th Field Artillery Battalion received a Presidential Unit Citation. The 30th Infantry Division, Old Hickory, the National Guard Division from Tennessee and Georgia and the Carolinas, held Mortain and broke Operation Lüttich with a force that was outnumbered in every category except one.

They had a radio. And at the other end of that radio, they had a system that no other army on Earth possessed. A system born in an Oklahoma classroom in 1931, tested in a Tunisian desert in 1943, and perfected on the frozen ridges of Belgium in the last winter of the war. The Germans came with tanks, with doctrine, with courage, with the best army Europe had produced in a century.
