“You told me fish don’t belong on a soybean farm.” “That was before I saw the fish.” Eli let that sit for a second before he answered, watching the shapes still moving under the surface behind Royy’s shoulder. Most people don’t change their mind until they see the fish for themselves. Grant stood a little apart from the rest of the family, watching his son answer questions he used to dismiss as a boy playing at farming.
He remembered the fork Roy had set down slow at that first dinner, remembered his own doubts he’d never spoken out loud, and he found himself doing quiet math on what a second pond might cost if they dug one along the creek bottom that flooded every spring on the other side of the property.
He didn’t say anything about it yet. There would be time for that conversation later over another Sunday dinner at the same table where this one had started with the same fork. Roy would probably set down slowly again, though for a different reason this time. Denise Okapor drove out that same afternoon on her own. Nobody had called her since she liked to check on the ponds she’d helped design once they’d had a full year to prove themselves.
She walked the bank with Eli, dipped a probe into the water without being asked, and read the numbers off the little screen out loud for whoever wanted to listen. dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, all of it sitting comfortably in the range she’d written down for him on a legal pad the previous March. She didn’t make a speech about it.
She just nodded once, the same kind of nod Grant had given a year earlier, and told Eli his notebook was more thorough than half the college interns she trained. For now, Eli set the carp gently back into the water and watched it disappear into the dark green below the surface. one more fish among 2,000 that had grown, mostly exactly the way the numbers said they should.
Roy stayed by the water a while after everyone else had wandered back toward the house. He crouched down, dipped two fingers into the pond, and pulled them back out again, studying the water like it might explain itself to him. It didn’t, but he came back the following week anyway, work gloves already on, asking if Eli had room for one more set of hands come feeding time.
Eli handed him a bucket of pellets and pointed him toward the shallow end where the biggest carp always gathered first, hungry and unbothered by who was standing on the bank above them.
