West of La Gleize, near the town of Spa, and sat American fuel depot number two, more than 2 million gallons of gasoline, enough to refuel Kampfgruppe Peiper for the rest of its drive to the Meuse and beyond. A German reconnaissance patrol

A hastily laid minefield and a scratch defense of anti-aircraft guns and machine guns and thrown together in a matter of hours by American rear area units was enough to turn the patrol back before it got close.
Peiper never knew how near he’d come. His tanks kept running on fumes instead. By December 19th, with fuel critically low and Peiper’s column fought its way into Stoumont and briefly held it. The deepest point his advance would ever reach, marked today by a small stone marker in the Belgian countryside. But holding Stoumont didn’t solve his actual problem.
Every bridge that could carry his heavier tanks west had already gone into a river. His fuel trucks weren’t coming and behind him the American defenders he thought he’d swept aside at Stavelot had retaken the town and cut his route back to the rest of the 1st SS Panzer Division. Most of what remained of Peiper’s armor sat parked and immobile, out of fuel, doing nothing but drawing fire. On the night of December 23rd into the 24th, with no relief coming and no fuel to move his vehicles even if it had, Peiper made the only decision left to him. He ordered his men to destroy what equipment they could and abandon the rest.
Roughly 135 tanks, half-tracks, and other vehicles left behind in and around Leglise, and led approximately 800 survivors on foot through the Belgian forests at night back toward German lines. Of the nearly 3,000 men who had started the offensive under his command a week earlier, fewer than a third made it out. The bridges the 291st Engineer Combat Battalion blew at Trois Ponts, and Heumont didn’t win the Battle of the Bulge by themselves. No single unit did.
