The Most TERRIFYING Multi Gun Vehicle Of The Vietnam War You’ve Never Heard Of
Picture a narrow street in the old Imperial city of Hugh, early 1968. A squat little tracked vehicle noses around a corner, no taller than the Marines walking beside it. It stops. Six gun barrels swing toward a stone wall packed with North Vietnamese riflemen. Then the whole street vanishes in a wall of dust and fire.
And when it clears, there is a hole where the building used to be. Search for this machine online and you will find it called the most terrifying vehicle of the Vietnam War. The weapon the enemy supposedly feared before it even fired. It makes a great thumbnail. It is also mostly not what the records actually say. Because the real history of this thing is stranger than the legend and honestly it is a lot better.
So, how does a vehicle the United States Army looked at, tested, and threw straight in the bin end up as the weapon Marine colonels would later call the most effective thing they had in the worst city battle of their war? To answer that, you have to go back to the 1950s and a genuinely strange idea. After the Second World War, American planners were haunted by the thought of Soviet tanks pouring across Europe.
The army wanted something that could kill those tanks and still squeeze inside the cargo planes of the day. It had to be light enough to fly, small enough to hide, and still deadly enough to matter. What they got was this, a vehicle so odd it was named after the Greek word for roughly the thing.
Historian Kenneth Estes, who traced the name back to its origins, says that rough translation is close enough to the truth. It weighed only around 9 tons. It carried a crew of three. And instead of a normal turret with one big gun, it wore six recoilless rifles on its shoulders, three to a side, like some kind of mechanical porcupine.
The first versions were cobbled together from the running gear of another failed little tank destroyer. And after a string of design meetings in the early 1950s, the Alice Chalmer’s company was handed a contract to build a batch of pilot vehicles. The whole thing had to stay light because it was meant to be flown into battle and it had to run on the same six-cylinder engine already sitting in the army’s trucks.
In other words, it was designed around its own limitations from the very first day. Here’s the part almost everyone gets wrong. Those guns are usually called 106 mm. The real bore was 105. The military relabeled it on purpose so nobody would jam the wrong ammunition into the older gun it replaced.

It is a small detail, but it tells you how this machine’s whole story got a little mangled in the retelling. The army tested it and said no. Too cramped, too slow, too thinly armored, and the guns had to be reloaded from outside the vehicle, out in the open, under fire. The Marine Corps, always short of money and never too proud to take a handme-down, said yes.
When the production run was finished, records kept by the Marine Corps Vietnam Tankers Historical Foundation put the total at 297 vehicles, not thousands, fewer than 300, for an entire war. One of the young Marines who ended up commanding one was a man named Jim Green, serving south of Daong. Listen to how he describes the machine he was handed and the problem nobody had solved.
>> I was a commander of a three three person anti-tank carrier. It’s called antos o n to ostos. Only weighs 10 tons and has three people. A driver, a loader, a driver, and a commander. And instead of having one one one gun turret, it’s got six recordless rifles. three on the left side and three on the right sides.
In a firefight, you had to reload these 106s. The loader had to get out to load, which is not not particularly a safe thing to do. So, when you’re in a firefight, you can’t in the middle of a firefight, have the loader get out to load. So, you have to move four or 500 yards or farther away from the firefight so he could reload it.

To load fresh rounds, a crewman had to climb out and do it by hand, fully exposed, which meant backing hundreds of yards away from a firefight just to get ready to shoot again. The Marines shipped their to Vietnam in the first half of 1965, expecting to hunt armor. There was just one problem.
The enemy did not bring tanks, at least not to these fights. For most of the war, the North Vietnamese and the Vietkong fought the Marines without the one thing the Anttos was built to destroy. Which brings us to the first myth worth killing. The Antos gets sold as a fearsome tank hunter. In Vietnam, it never knocked out a single enemy tank.
Its only tank kills ever came earlier in the Dominican Republic in 1965 against two light tanks. Historian Peter Brush lays this out plainly in his history of the vehicle. So, a weapon designed to kill tanks arrived in a war with no tanks to kill. And instead of becoming useless, it found a second life nobody had planned.
The Marines aimed those six rifles at bunkers, tree lines, and buildings and used the thing as a battering ram for the infantry. Then there was the round that gave these its nightmare reputation. an anti-personnel shell packed with thousands of tiny steel darts called fleshettes which turned each barrel into a giant shotgun.
You will see videos claim that a single salvo threw 57,000 steel darts at once. Be very careful with that number. The sources cannot even agree on how many darts sat inside one round with estimates running from around 8,000 to nearly 10,000. And that giant salvo figure is just somebody multiplying a guess by six.
What is actually true is grim enough without the exaggeration. At close range, those darts could shred almost anything in a cone in front of the vehicle. But the same little machine had a nasty habit of announcing itself. Every time those rifles fired, they threw an enormous cloud of back blast out the rear, kicking up dust and smoke that told everyone within sight exactly where it was hiding, and the armor meant to protect the crew was barely half an inch thick.
Heavy machine gun rounds could punch clean through it. A mine could gut it from below. This was never a wonder weapon. It was a fragile, loud, half-blind machine that happened to hit like a sledgehammer. Out in the field, the Antos lived a harder and less cinematic life than the legend suggests. Jim Green remembered that on his patrols, the enemy rarely stood and fought in daylight.
The day more or less belonged to the Marines. The night, as he put it, belonged to the other side. And when the siege of Kesan locked down that lonely marine base in early 1968, around 10 ontos were flown in by heavy Sea Stallion transport helicopters to help hold the perimeter, sitting in fixed positions, waiting for an assault.
Which brings us at last to the city of Hugh. Late January 1968, during a holiday truce, tens of thousands of North Vietnamese and Vietkong troops stormed cities across South Vietnam in what became known as the Tet offensive. The old Imperial capital of Hugh was hit hardest of all. Thousands of enemy soldiers dug into its stone buildings and its ancient walled fortress, the Citadel.
And the Marines sent to take it back walked into something they were barely trained for. House-to-house fighting in a dense city against a dugin enemy who was not going anywhere. There is a bitter irony buried in the timing. Just weeks before Tet back in December 1967, the Marine Corps had quietly decommissioned its dedicated anti-tank battalions.

The Marines paired the little 9-tonontos with the 50-tonon patent tank. The patent brought thick armor and staying power. The brought speed and those six rifles.
And this next detail is the one that matters most. According to the Marine Corps official history of 1968, the Marine tanks at first lacked the special fuses needed to punch through Hugh’s thick masonry walls. The Ontos rounds could do it. At ranges of three to 500 yards, a single ontos could blow a hole roughly four square yards wide straight through a defended wall and the infantry would flood through the gap.
The officer commanding the first marines in that fight, Colonel Stanley Hughes called the most effective of all marine supporting arms. Read that again. Not one of the most effective, but the single most effective. Lieutenant Colonel Ernest Cheetum, who led the grinding push through the southern half of the city, said the little vehicle was as big a help as any piece of gear his battalion had.
The tactics were simple and nervy. An ontos would dart out from cover, loose a volley into a target, and reverse back before the enemy could range in on that telltale cloud of back blast. One marine who fought at Hugh Dale die later described watching Anne ontos loader spring out of the back of the vehicle to reload with rounds cracking off the armor all around him and somehow keep grinning the whole time.
It was brutal close personal work and the little vehicle nobody had wanted was right in the middle of it. Inside the citadel itself, the fighting was some of the ugliest of the entire war. Progress was measured in single buildings and single walls. And the marine advance sometimes ground to a halt, not because the enemy was too strong, but because the tanks and the ontos had simply run out of the heavy rounds they needed to keep blasting a path forward.
By the time the fighting in Hugh finally burned out in early March, after roughly a month of close quarters hell, the city lay in ruins, and both sides had paid a staggering price. Through all of it, those few little ontos had been in the thick of the worst of the street fighting, doing the one job nobody had ever designed them to do.

Now, about that terror, Marines at Hugh really did report that [music] enemy soldiers would break and run the moment antos fired its ranging shot before the main guns had even spoken. That is real, and it comes straight from the men who were there. But here is the honest part your average content farm will never tell you.
That fear is described entirely from the American side. In the Vietnamese accounts that [music] have surfaced, the Antos is treated as just another thin skin machine, something to be knocked out with a rocket or a mine. So when you hear that the enemy was terrified of it, understand whose memory that actually is.
It is the Marines telling you the enemy ran, which to be fair, they very often did because for all its firepower, the Antos stayed fragile right to the end. During the battle for Hugh, three of them were knocked out. On the 7th of February, an enemy rocket destroyed one that was supporting the First Battalion, First Marines, and killed its driver.
The very thing that saved so many Marines could still be gutted by a single well- aimed shot. And that was really the beginning of the end for the whole strange experiment. By 1969 and 1970, the Antos was simply worn out. Spare parts had run dry. The guns were going out of date. And the surviving vehicles were quietly cannibalized and pulled from service.
The Marines who had loved it at Hugh watched it disappear. A handful lingered on in odd corners of the world. According to historian Peter Brush, the very last operational was not withdrawn until 1980, guarding the fence line at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, long after almost everyone had forgotten the thing ever existed.
So, here is what actually endures. Not a terrifying super weapon that made a whole army tremble. Something better and a lot more human. A vehicle the army rejected, built by a tractor company, too thin skinned to survive a lucky rocket that a few hundred Marines dragged into the worst street fight of their war and turned into the one thing keeping them alive.
The legend calls it the most terrifying vehicle you have never heard of. The record calls it the misfit that saved Marines at Hugh. And that story never needed the exaggeration in the first place. The bridge was standing and that was the problem because a bridge that is standing looks like a bridge that will hold. It was a masonry arch highway bridge over a river in Lraine in the second week of September 1944. Four spans cut stone built sometime in the previous century by men who had expected it to carry farm wagons and had built it well enough that it had carried far more than that ever since.
The retreating German engineers had put charges on it and had been in a hurry, and the result was a bridge that had lost part of its parapit and a section of roadway on the far end, and was otherwise, to every eye looking at it that morning intact, standing on the near bank with a notebook, a folding rule, and a pair of muddy boots, was Sergeant Harold Vance, 24 years old, from Stubenville, Ohio.
He was a bridge reconnaissance non-commissioned officer in a combat engineer battalion. And his job that morning was to inspect that structure and assign it a military load classification, which is the number that tells every driver and every commander in the United States Army what weight of vehicle a bridge will.
Carrie, there were three officers standing on the road behind him who had already decided what the number was going to be. A colonel from the operation section had said the bridge would take armor. A major had agreed. The engineer captain had not said much, and behind them on the road was a column that included medium tanks.
And behind the column was a schedule, and behind the schedule was the commanding general of the Third Army, who had come forward to see the crossing site himself. Vance came up the bank and he told them the bridge would not carry armor and he said he was not going to sign it. The colonel told him to look again.
Vance said he had looked twice and then General George S. Patton who had been standing quietly at the edge of the road. Asked the sergeant a question that changed the entire shape of that morning. Because to understand what a 24year-old sergeant was actually refusing to do on that riverbank, you need to understand what a bridge classification was in the United States Army in 1944 and what it cost when one of them was wrong. The army ran
on a system called military load classification. Every vehicle in the infantry had a number. Every bridge in a theater of operations had a number. A jeep was a small number. A 2 and 1/2 ton cargo truck was a larger one. A medium tank fully combat loaded with fuel, ammunition, and crew ran into the 30s. The rule was simple and absolute.
You did not put a vehicle across a bridge whose class number was lower than the vehicle’s own. Engineers assigned those numbers. They did it with computations based on span length, material, the condition of the arch or the gerder, the state of the peers and abutments, the scour under the foundations, and the damage the structure had taken.
They painted the number on a sign at the bridge approach, and from that moment on, every column commander in the army made his decisions based on it. That number was a promise, and the man who made the promise signed for it in Lraine in September of 1944, and that promise was under more pressure than at almost any other point in the campaign in Western Europe.
The Third Army had been halted at the end of August on the Muse for lack of gasoline. When fuel began flowing again in the first weeks of September, the army moved east into Lraine and ran directly into the Moselle River and the fortified belt around Mets and into a river system that was about to become one of the most difficult engineering problems the American army faced in that theater.
The Germans understood bridges. Their engineers had been demolishing crossings across France for two months with a professionalism that the American engineers who followed them acknowledged openly. And in Lraine the rains came and the rivers rose. And the fall of 1944 in that region produced flooding that washed out crossing sites faster than they could be built.
So every intact bridge was worth an enormous amount. Every intact bridge saved ours. saved bridging equipment that was in short supply. Saved a river crossing operation that would otherwise have to be fought for, which is exactly why an intact bridge was the most dangerous object on a battlefield to a man with a notebook. Now, here’s the thing.
What Harold Vance had found under that bridge was not visible from the road. And that is the whole point. The German demolition party had placed their charges to bring the structure down and had not been given the time to do the job properly. What they had produced was a bridge with obvious cosmetic damage at the far end which drew every eye and a second effect that drew nobody’s eye at all.
The blast had gone into one of the peers, not through it, into it. The stone facing was intact. behind the facing. The pier had been disturbed, and the river, which had been running high for a week, had been working at the disturbed material at the base ever since. Vance had gone down the bank and into the water to the top of his boots, and then above them.
He had put his hands on the pier below the waterline. He had probed the scour hole with a rod, and had found a void where there should have been foundation. He had come back up and done it again on the upstream side, and then he had run his computations twice, sitting on a stone with a wet notebook, because a number written once by a tired man is not a number.
What he came up with was a bridge that would carry light traffic, trucks, jeeps, ambulances, towed guns, but armor. A medium tank was several times the load, applied through tracks that concentrate weight in a way the men who built that bridge in the 1800s had never imagined. And this is where it gets complicated.
Because the failure mode of a bridge like that is not the one people picture. It does not necessarily come down under the first tank. It might take the first one. It might take the second. What a compromised pier under a masonry arch does is settle. And when a pier settles, the arch above it loses its geometry, and a stone arch that has lost its geometry does not warn anybody.
It goes when it goes, and the thing on it at that moment is at the bottom of the river, and so is the crossing site, and so is the schedule. And the crossing site is the part that a young sergeant standing on a riverbank thinks about. Because a tank in a river is not just a lost vehicle. It is a demolition of the exact structure the army needed.
It closes the crossing until a bridging unit can come forward and build a new one alongside in a river running high under whatever attention the enemy chooses to pay to it. It puts an entire column on the wrong bank for a day or more. Picture it. The second week of September 1944. Gray light.
A river running fast and brown and higher than it should be, carrying branches and debris out of the hills. A stone bridge, four spans, the far parapit gone, rubble on the roadway at the end. A road on the near side packed with vehicles nose totail. Engines shut down. Crews standing on the hulls. Everybody waiting. Officers on the road with a map case.
An engineer captain with his hands in his pocket. And coming up the muddy bank, a sergeant with soaked trousers, a wet notebook, and a number in it that nobody in that group wanted to hear. The tank crews on that road were watching the whole thing without appearing to watch it in the way that soldiers watch an argument between people senior to them.
They had a particular interest in the outcome. A tank crew crossing a bridge is a crew that has handed its life to somebody else’s arithmetic. and every man in that column had at some point in the previous two months driven across a structure on a painted number and thought about it while he was doing it.
They could not hear the conversation. They could see the sergeant’s wet trousers, and they could see that he had come up out of the river, and that told them most of what they needed to know about which of the men on that road had actually looked. Here’s what doesn’t make it into the history books. what it actually cost Harold Vance to hold that number in front of the men who were standing on that road. He was a sergeant.
The colonel who had already announced that the bridge would take armor had close to 20 years in the army. The pressure in that situation is not applied through threats. Nobody threatens a sergeant. The pressure is applied through the simple physical fact of who is standing where and through the perfectly reasonable sounding sentence that begins with the words are you sure.
And the honest answer to are you sure for any engineer who has ever assigned a classification to a damaged structure is that certainty is not what the job produces. The job produces a computation, a margin, and a judgment about how much of the margin the damage has eaten. Vance believed his number. He could not prove it to a colonel standing on a road because the evidence was underwater.
He also knew exactly what the cost of being wrong in the other direction looked like. If he classified that bridge low, and it turned out the pier was sound, he had cost the Third Army a crossing site during the most time-sensitive advance of the campaign, and he had done it out of caution, which is the one sin an army in pursuit does not forgive quickly.
He held the number anyway. Stay with me. Because what Patton did next is the hinge this whole story turns on. He had not said anything up to that point. He had come forward to look at the crossing because that was what he did, and he had been standing at the edge of the road, listening to a colonel and a sergeant disagree about a stone bridge.
The accounts of that moment are consistent in their shape. Patton asked the sergeant one question. He asked him what he had found under the water, not whether he was sure, not who had told him to say that. what he had found. Vance told him, the disturbed peer, the intact facing, the void at the base, the depth of the scour, the two sets of computations. He did not editorialize.
He gave the man the findings the way an engineer gives findings in order without adjectives. Then Patton went down the bank with him. That detail is in more than one account, and it is the one that people who tell this story tend to leave out because it sounds embellished. It is not.
Patton was a man who habitually went and looked at things. He had spent his career doing personal reconnaissance, and he did not consider a riverbank beneath him. He went down the muddy slope in his boots, and the sergeant showed him where the water was working at the base of the pier, and the general looked at it. Then he came back up and he halted the column.
He did not put armor on that bridge. He told the engineer officers to get bridging forward and open a second crossing. And he told them that the stone bridge would carry the light traffic it was rated for and nothing heavier. And he made it clear that the classification stood as the sergeant had written it. And then according to the accounts he said one more thing to the colonel who had been so confident on the road.
He said the man who had been in the water had better information than the man who had not. That was the end of it. It took less than 15 minutes from the moment Vance came up the bank. Think about that for a second. A commanding general in the middle of the most time-sensitive advance of his career, standing on a wet bank in Lraine, accepting a number from a 24year-old sergeant that cost him a readymade crossing and hours he did not have.
See, what most folks don’t realize is that what Patton was deferring to on that bank was not the sergeant’s rank. His confidence or his willingness to speak up. It was his signature, a military load classification, is one of the few things in an army that comes with a name attached to it. The commanding general does not sign it. The colonel from operations does not sign it.
The man who inspected the structure signs it. And if that number is wrong, it is his number and everybody in the chain knows whose it was. That system only works if the man holding the pen is allowed to hold it. The moment a classification becomes negotiable, the moment a sergeant learns that the number gets adjusted upward when a colonel is impatient and a general is waiting.
The entire system stops being an engineering assessment and becomes a prediction of what the command wants to hear. And an army whose bridge classifications reflect the schedule rather than the structure will put something heavy on something weak. At night, in a hurry at a river crossing that it cannot afford to lose. Patton understood that.
He had built an army that moved faster than any American army had ever moved. and he understood better than almost anyone what that speed actually rested on, which was engineers who were right. Harold Vance, 24 years old, Stubenville, Ohio. His father, Ry, had spent 26 years in bridge gangs on the Ohio River, working steel, and had come home most evenings with his hands in a condition that his wife had stopped commenting on.
He had a specific and unscentimental view of the trade which he passed to his son in fragments over a great many years and the core of it was that a structure does not care what anybody wants. It carries what it carries. Everything else is conversation. Harold had gone two years to a state engineering program and had run out of money in the second year.
He took work with the county highway department as a rodman on a survey crew and moved up onto the bridge inspection site, which in 1939 in eastern Ohio meant driving to old county bridges and going underneath them with a rod and a notebook and finding out what the ledgers had stopped being honest about. He learned to read scour.
He learned that the deck tells you almost nothing and the foundation tells you almost everything. He was drafted in 1942 and the army which did not always sort men well sorted this one correctly and put him in the combat engineers. He had a mother named Irene and a wife named Dorothy he had married 11 weeks before he shipped and he was carrying a folded photograph that had not survived the summer particularly well.
His plan for afterward was to finish the two years he had not finished and get his certification and go back to bridges. On the design side if he could get there and on the inspection side if he could not. He was by every account of him not a talkative man. What he was was a man who had been under a great many bridges and had learned that the ones that looked fine were the ones worth crawling under.
The stone bridge in Lraine stayed standing. It carried light traffic for weeks. The bridging unit came forward and opened a second crossing alongside it, and the armor went over that, and the column that had been stopped on the road that morning was moving again by that evening. Whether the old bridge would have taken a medium tank is a question that cannot be answered, because it was never asked of it.
That is the permanent condition of this kind of work. You cannot count the vehicles that did not go into a river. The only evidence that a man was right is the absence of the event, and absence does not get written down. There was no commendation for Harold Vance. There was a number in a notebook, a sign on a bridge approach, and a column that went across a different structure a few hours later than it wanted to.
Was Patton right to accept the sergeant’s classification and halt his own column? Some would say no. That an army in pursuit lives on ours. That the whole art of what the Third Army did in 1944 was accepting risk that more cautious commanders would not accept. And that a commanding general who lets a sergeant’s caution override an experienced colonel’s judgment has handed the pace of his campaign to the most conservative man on the riverbank.
That risk is what generals are for. Others would say exactly the opposite. that the number on a bridge is not an opinion, that it belongs to the man who inspected the structure and signed for it, and that the entire mobility of an army rests on that number, being an honest one. The patent did not defer to a sergeant. He deferred to the water, and the sergeant was simply the only man present who had gone into it.
