The MISTAKE That Made The M1 Garand The Most Feared Rifle In The Pacific

The rain had not stopped for 2 days when the North Dakota men came ashore on Guadalcanal on the 13th of October, 1942, and the Marines who had been fighting there since August looked at them and did not think much. These were National Guard soldiers, farm boys and clerks from the northern plains, the 164th Infantry Regiment, and they carried a rifle most of the Marines had never fired.

It was long and heavy, and it had no bolt handle to work, and to men who had been raised on the Springfield, a rifle you did not have to cycle by hand felt like a toy or a lie. One veteran remembered the plain scorn of it, the sense that the army had sent them children with strange guns to hold a line that grown men were dying on. Henderson Field lay just inland, a muddy airstrip that was the whole reason for the battle, and the Japanese meant to take it back.

On the night of the 24th of October, in a rain so hard the men could not see the wire in front of them, they came. They came in the thousands, Sendai Division veterans, screaming and blowing on trumpets, throwing themselves at the perimeter in wave after wave through the dark, and along that line the North Dakota men opened up with those long heavy rifles, and the sound was not the sound the Marines knew.

It was not the slow deliberate crack and pause of the bolt gun. It was a roar that did not stop to breathe. Eight rounds as fast as a man could pull the trigger, then a small metal sound, then eight more. The whole line of them pouring fire into the charging dark faster than anything the Japanese had ever run into.

By morning, the ground in front of the wire was covered with the dead. The 164th and the Marines beside them killed something close to 1,500 attackers over those nights and lost 26 of their own killed, and the Marines who had come to sneer at the new rifle went looking for one of their own. The thing they had laughed at had just held the line.

And it is my honest view, reading it all these decades later, that the mistake they hated is the exact thing that won those firefights in the Pacific. So, let me take you back and show you how it happened because it is a stranger story than the myths make it. The man at the center of it was John Cantius Garand, a French-Canadian by birth, a toolmaker and a shooting man, who went to work for the government armory at Springfield, Massachusetts after the First World War.

His job, the job that swallowed most of his working life, was to build something no major army in the world had ever managed to issue as standard, a self-loading rifle. A rifle where the gun itself did the work of chambering the next round, so the soldier only had to aim and pull the trigger over and over without ever taking his hand off to work a bolt.

Men had been trying to build such a thing for 40 years. Plenty of them worked on a bench. None of them were tough enough and simple enough and cheap enough to put in the hands of millions of ordinary young men and trust in mud and sand and rain. Garand spent the better part of 15 years getting it right.

The way he made it work was a thing called gas operation. When the rifle fired, a little of the burning gas that drove the bullet was bled off through a small hole near the muzzle and pushed back against a piston under the barrel and that push did the work of unlocking the bolt, throwing out the empty case and loading the next round. It was clever and more to the point it was rugged, made of a handful of stout steel parts a soldier could strip and clean in the field with nothing but his hands.

The finished rifle weighed about 9 and 1/2 lb empty, a solid lump of walnut and steel a little over 3 and 1/2 ft long, heavier than the bolt guns it would replace. But weight in a rifle is not all bad. It soaks up recoil and steadies the aim and the men who carried it came to trust it precisely because it felt like it would not break.

Garand, I should say, never made a fortune from it. He was a government employee government salary and the rifle that bears his name earned him no royalty at all. He did his work for the wage. And here is the part that matters. When Garand’s design was working best in the late 1920s and into 1931, it was not built for the cartridge you might expect.

It was chambered for a round called the .276 Pederson. That was a smaller, lighter, gentler cartridge than the round the American Army had been using since 1906, the .30-06. Now, I want you to understand why that choice was a good one because this is the heart of the whole thing. A self-loading rifle works by capturing some of the violence of the shot, the gas and the recoil, and using it to throw the next round into the chamber.

The bigger and more powerful the cartridge, the more violence there is to tame and the more the mechanism gets beaten and hammered every time the man fires. The .30-06 was a big, hard-hitting, long-ranged round designed for machine guns and for bolt rifles where a man’s shoulder and a heavy breech soaked up the punishment. It was frankly more than a light self-loading rifle wanted to swallow.

The smaller .276 round made everything easier. The rifle could be lighter. [clears throat] The parts took less of a beating and lasted longer. The recoil was softer, which meant a soldier could hold his aim and put his second and third and fourth shots where they needed to go instead of fighting the gun back down out of the trees.

And here is the thing people forget. A soldier could carry more of the lighter rounds for the same weight on his back. More ammunition in a war is not a small thing. It is very close to being everything. In the early trials in 1931, 20 of the smaller caliber Garands were tested against the competing designs, and the .

276 Garand was the clear winner. On the 4th of January, 1932, the board that ran these things met and recommended that the army adopt it. The smaller round, that was the plan. The rifle that was going to arm America was going to be a .276. And then, the day after that recommendation, the whole thing was killed by one man.

The Army Chief of Staff at that time was General Douglas MacArthur, and MacArthur personally refused to allow any change of caliber. On the 25th of February, 1932, he ordered that all work on the .276 round and the rifles built for it stop immediately and completely. The rifle would stay in the old .30-06, or it would not be built at all.

Garand went back to his bench and reworked his design, the design that had finally come right, to swallow the bigger, harder, more punishing cartridge after all. Now you can see why serious men called this a mistake. Everything the trials had shown pointed the other way. The lighter round was easier on the rifle, easier on the shoulder, easier to carry in quantity.

MacArthur was throwing that away. And for years afterward, in the gun trade and among the design men, you would hear it said that the general had crippled a fine rifle out of stubbornness. But I have read MacArthur’s reasoning, and it was not stubbornness, and it was not ignorance. It was 1932. The country was in the depths of the Great Depression.

There was almost no money for anything, and the army was sitting on warehouses full of .30-06 ammunition, billions of rounds of it left from the last war and still being made. Every machine gun the army owned fired it. Every training range was set up for it. To adopt a new cartridge meant scrapping all of that and buying it all again in the worst economy the nation had ever seen on the eve of what any thinking man could feel was going to be another great war.

MacArthur decided the army could not afford two calibers and if it was going to have one, it would be the one it already had by the mountain. So, the M1 Garand went to war chambered for the .30-06 and it fed from a device that is the second half of our story. Because the rifle did not load from a box magazine you could top up.

It loaded from a little sheet metal frame called an en bloc clip that held eight rounds and the whole clip went down into the rifle together. You pressed it in with your thumb, the bolt slammed home on the first round and you fired. And when you fired the eighth and last round, the empty clip was thrown up and out of the rifle by a spring and it made a sound, a bright ringing metallic ping clear enough to hear on a still range.

And around that little sound there grew up one of the most famous stories of the whole war. The story goes like this. The enemy learned to listen for the ping. A Japanese soldier or a German in the other war would hear that ring, know the American in front of him had just fired his last round and had an empty rifle and rise up in that two or three seconds to shoot him down before he could reload.

It is a wonderful story in the films and the books and half the conversations you will ever have about this rifle. And I have to tell you from the documents that there is no good evidence it ever happened that way. Think about what a firefight actually is. It is not a still range. It is a wall of noise, rifles and machine guns and shells and men shouting, the loudest thing most of these men ever stood inside of.

The idea that a soldier could pick one small ping out of that roar, correctly match it to one particular enemy among many, know that man had not simply been handed a loaded rifle by the fellow next to him, and gamble his own life on standing up in the open in those two seconds is not how combat works. No veteran ever recorded being caught that way in any account I trust.

And American soldiers, being practical, found their own uses for it. Some carried a spare empty clip and threw it against a rock to make the ping on purpose to tempt an enemy into showing himself. The sound was real. The rifle really did ring. But the myth that it got men killed is just that, a myth. And I would rather give you the truth.

What was not a myth was the firepower. And this is where the mistake turns all the way around and becomes the thing that mattered most. Set the M1 Garand next to the rifle the Japanese soldier carried, the Arisaka, a fine, accurate, sturdy bolt-action rifle, and on paper they are close.

But the Arisaka man had to lift his hand off the trigger after every single shot, work the bolt up and back and forward and down, and only then aim again. The American did not. He held his aim and pulled the trigger, and the rifle handed him the next round by itself eight times, and then he pressed in a fresh clip and did it again. A trained man with a Garand could put out 40 to 50 aimed rounds in a minute.

The bolt rifle man, working hard, might manage a third of that. Multiply that across a squad, across a platoon, across a whole line of men in the dark on Guadalcanal, and you understand what those Sendai Division soldiers ran into. They had trained and planned against an enemy who fired at bolt-action speed.

They met a wall of fire two and three times heavier than anything they had reckoned on, and they died against it in their hundreds. The Japanese understood what had hit them, and they tried to answer it. Late in the war, their designers built a rifle called the Type 4, and it was more or less a copy of the Garand, a gas-operated self-loader meant to give their own infantry the same weight of fire the Americans had.

They got a few hundred of them made, but by then the factories were being bombed, the skilled men and the good steel were gone, and the war was all but lost. The Type 4 never reached the troops in any numbers that mattered. It stands in the record as a plain admission from the other side. That is perhaps the highest praise a weapon ever gets when the men on the receiving end try to copy it and cannot manage in time.

And behind the rifle stood the thing that truly won the Pacific, which was supply. Because the M1 Garand fired the .30-06, the same round as the Browning machine guns, the same round already stacked in warehouses, and already rolling off American production lines by the billion. There was never a moment when a rifleman ran dry for want of some strange new cartridge no partly to The mistake, remember, had been made partly to avoid splitting the ammunition supply.

And so on island after island, the fire never had to slacken because the bullets were always there. A weapon is only as good as the stream of ammunition feeding it, and that stream in American hands never ran out. There is the irony I promised you. The whole reason the smaller round looked better was that it made the rifle gentler and easier.

But by 1942, the rifle was built and the bugs were out of it, and what the soldier in the Pacific needed was not gentleness. He needed the hardest hitting round he could get that would smash through jungle brush and drop a charging man and reach across a clearing, and that shared its ammunition with every machine gun on the island, and every belt of cartridges brought ashore.

The thing the experts had wanted to trade away, the raw power of the .30-06, turned out to be exactly what the island fighting demanded. MacArthur’s stubborn penny-counting refusal, the mistake, had left the American infantryman with a semi-automatic rifle firing a full-power cartridge, and no other army on earth had anything like it.

The Marines, I should say, did not get there overnight. The Marine Corps went into Guadalcanal in August of 1942 still carrying the old bolt-action Springfield of 1903, a rifle they loved and trusted and shot beautifully. They were proud of it, and many of them looked at the army’s self-loader with real suspicion, the way skilled men look at a machine that promises to do their craft for them.

But after nights like the one at Henderson Field, after watching what a line of Garands could do to a charge, the argument was over. Through 1943, the Marines were re-equipped, and by the time they went ashore on Tarawa in November of that year, and on into the harder islands beyond, Saipan, Guam, Peleliu, the average Marine rifleman carried the M1 Garand, too.

The whole American infantry, Army and Marine both, now fought with a weight of individual firepower that its enemies simply could not match, man for man, anywhere. By the end of it, more than 5 million of these rifles had been made at Springfield Armory and at Winchester, more than 5 and a half million in all before the lines finally closed years later.

And the men who used it did not speak of it in the careful language of the Ordnance Boards. General George Patton, who was not a sentimental man about equipment, called it the greatest battle implement ever devised. I have always thought that phrase was doing more work than people notice.

Not the most accurate, not the most elegant, the greatest battle implement. The thing that did the most in the actual business of battle to keep American soldiers alive and their enemies dead. But I keep the human cost in the frame, always, because a rifle is a tool for killing and being killed near, and no amount of admiration for the machine should let us forget that.

The men of the 164th who held that line lost their friends in the mud, and the ones who lived carried those nights the rest of their days. The Japanese soldiers who charged were young men, too, sent to die against a wall of fire their commanders had not understood, and there were thousands of them left in front of the wire.

The Garand did not make the Pacific war clean or quick. It made it survivable for more Americans than would otherwise have come home, and that is a real thing, and it is also not the same as glory. When I read the letters of the men who carried it, they do not write about the ping or the clip or the caliber.

They write about the friend beside them who did not make it to the beach the next morning. So, that is the story under the story. A rifle that was meant to fire a smaller kind of round, a general who said no for reasons of money and warehouses, and the country that had none to spare, and a war in the islands that turned that mistake into the deadliest infantry rifle any soldier carried, ringing out eight rounds at a time into the rain while the men beside it worked their bolts and fell behind.

History does that more often than we like to admit, the wrong turn that saves you. The stubborn choice that only looks wise from the far side of the thing. The whole American infantry, Army and Marine both, now fought with a weight of individual firepower that its enemies simply could not match, man for man, anywhere. By the end of it, more than 5 million of these rifles had been made at Springfield Armory and at Winchester, more than 5 and a half million in all before the lines finally closed years later.

And the men who used it did not speak of it in the careful language of the Ordnance Boards. General George Patton, who was not a sentimental man about equipment, called it the greatest battle implement ever devised. I have always thought that phrase was doing more work than people notice.

Not the most accurate, not the most elegant, the greatest battle implement. The thing that did the most in the actual business of battle to keep American soldiers alive and their enemies dead. But I keep the human cost in the frame, always, because a rifle is a tool for killing and being killed near, and no amount of admiration for the machine should let us forget that.

The men of the 164th who held that line lost their friends in the mud, and the ones who lived carried those nights the rest of their days. The Japanese soldiers who charged were young men, too, sent to die against a wall of fire their commanders had not understood, and there were thousands of them left in front of the wire.

The Garand did not make the Pacific war clean or quick. It made it survivable for more Americans than would otherwise have come home, and that is a real thing, and it is also not the same as glory. When I read the letters of the men who carried it, they do not write about the ping or the clip or the caliber.

They write about the friend beside them who did not make it to the beach the next morning. So, that is the story under the story. A rifle that was meant to fire a smaller kind of round, a general who said no for reasons of money and warehouses, and the country that had none to spare, and a war in the islands that turned that mistake into the deadliest infantry rifle any soldier carried, ringing out eight rounds at a time into the rain while the men beside it worked their bolts and fell behind.

History does that more often than we like to admit, the wrong turn that saves you. The stubborn choice that only looks wise from the far side of the thing.
