The Germans Called Their Pillboxes Impregnable. Then a 155mm Rolled Up at Point-Blank Range
In the third week of September 1944, a German soldier crouched behind 2 feet of reinforced concrete on the western edge of his own country and believed the wall around him could not be broken. He had been told exactly that for years. The box he manned was part of the west wall, the fortified belt the allies called the sief freed line.
The engineers who poured it had promised every garrison the same thing, that no field gun on Earth could reach a man through that much concrete. Then an American machine came up a muddy farm track and stopped a few hundred yards from his firing slit. It ran on tank tracks. It carried a single enormous barrel, a 155 mm gun pointed straight at him over open sight.
What that gun crew did over the next 9 days is written down. It sits in an American field artillery report that still exists mission by mission with a conclusion at the bottom drawn from the German prisoners [music] themselves. By the end of this, you will know the exact line that report puts on the record, and you will understand why so many men inside those boxes came out with their hands raised before the second shell ever arrived.
The gun was called the M12. The Americans who served it had a name for it, King Kong. And the men on the receiving end had earned it a second one, the door knocker. This is the story of the machine, the nine days it spent working the pill boxes in front of the 9inth Infantry Division, and the verdict the enemy handed down on the concrete he had trusted with his life.
The German soldiers certainty came from years of being told the wall would hold against anything. The West Wall was not a bluff. Adolf Hitler had ordered it built in the late 1930s, and after the Normandy landings, he ordered it strengthened again, throwing labor and cement at the border in a hurry. The line ran for hundreds of miles.
In front of the bunkers lay rows of concrete anti-tank obstacles. The pyramids the soldiers called dragons teeth meant to stop armor coal. Behind the teeth stood the pillboxes, thousands of them built to a set of standard patterns. So a garrison moved from one to the next and found the same layout, the same firing slits, the same feel.
The common box carried walls around 2 ft thick. The heaviest works ran to 6 ft of reinforced concrete and were sunk into the hillsides with tunnels between them. The design had one idea behind it. The boxes covered each other. A man attacking one pill box walked into the fire of two more. he could not see [music] and every position had good observation and plenty of artillery zeroed in behind it.
On paper, the line was one of the strongest belts of fortification in Europe, and the men holding it in September had been raised on stories of how it could not be cracked. The reality behind the concrete was thinner than the concrete. By September 1944, the German army in the west had been driven back across France in weeks, and the units falling back onto the border were worn down and stitched together from replacements.

American patrols near the city of Arkan reported the defenders in something close to panic. The commander of the German 116th Panza Division, General Gearard Vonwarin, judged the situation around Akren so far gone that he countermanded the order to evacuate the city and left a note behind for the arriving Americans.
The line was strong. The men inside it in many places were not. The units scraped together to man the border that month tell the same story. Formations that had been shattered in the retreat across France were rebuilt overnight out of stragglers, rear area men, and replacements with little training and thrown into the boxes to hold.
One Panza division facing the American attack could field fewer than 2,500 infantry men, a fraction of its proper strength. Many of the fortress troops posted to the line were older men or soldiers rated fit only for limited duty, put there to hold concrete because concrete was supposed to do most of the work for them.
The whole design of the west wall rested on that trade. thin manpower behind thick walls on the theory that the walls would make ordinary men hard to shift. The theory only held as long as the walls held. That gap is exactly what the American commander in front of it wanted to test. General Joe Collins, who led the Seventh Corps, ordered a reconnaissance in force straight at the West Wall in the Stalberg corridor southeast of Ark.
His armor went first. Lieutenant Colonel William Love drove a task force through a gap in the Dragon’s Teeth near the border town of Roitgun and got behind the first band of defenses. The infantry that had to clear the boxes one by one belonged to the 9inth Infantry Division. And their experience over the following days explains better than any specification why the Americans needed a gun like King Kong so badly.
The ordinary way of taking a pillbox was slow and it was murder on the men who did it. The American Tactical Bulletins written that autumn describe the drill in flat practical language. Put fire on the apertures to force the slits closed and keep the defender’s heads down. Work a squad up along the dead ground.
The box’s own guns could not cover. close enough to fire a couple of rocket rounds at the steel door or to push a pole charge against the wall or to bring a flamethrower up to [music] the slit. Every step of it happened inside the interlocking fire of the neighboring boxes and the German mortar and artillery observers behind the line were watching the whole approach.
A box was rarely one problem. Was three or four problems firing at the men trying to solve the first. To force the surrender of the 38 men inside a single box, the 9inth Division soldiers spent 12 hours and used field artillery, anti-tank rockets, smoke, 24 lb of dynamite, 18 captured German mines detonated against the walls, and 400 lb of high explosive.
12 hours for one box out of thousands. Engineers crawled up to the firing slits under fire with charges strapped to their back. The 47th Infantry Regiment of the 9inth Division captured the village of Chevhut on the 16th of September and after a 3-day fight became the first Allied unit to punch completely through the Sief Freed line on the 17th.
Every yard of that had been paid for at the price of that one box multiplied. There had to be a faster way to open a pillbox than 400 lb of explosive and half a day. The faster way had arrived on tracks and it had a strange history of its own. The M12 was an old French gun bolted onto an American tank. The barrel came from a heavy field gun the French had designed in the First World War, a 155 mm weapon that the United States had built and stockpiled in large numbers.
The chassis underneath it came from the M3 Lee, the boxy American medium tank that had already been passed over for frontline service. American ordinance engineers married the two, mounting the big gun on the open rear deck of the tank hole with a folding blade at the back. When the gun fired, that blade, a heavy spade, was dropped and dug into the earth to hold the machine against a recoil violent enough to shove a tank sideway.
The crew numbered six. The vehicle carried only 10 of its shells on board because each projectile weighed about 95 lbs and a man had to lift it. A second tracked vehicle, a cargo carrier built on the same hull, followed behind with 40 more rounds and extra crewmen to do the lifting. The gun threw that 95lb shell at over 2,300 ft per second and could reach a target 12 m away.
It had been designed to sit far behind the fighting and drop shells on targets its crew would never see. Almost nobody wanted it at first. Only 100 were ever built, 60 in 1942 and 40 in 1943. And for a while, the whole batch sat unused while the army argued about whether a self-propelled heavy gun was worth the trouble.
The invasion of France changed the argument. The machines were pulled back out and refurbished, then handed to a small set of field artillery battalions, among them the 557th and the 558th, which took them ashore in the first days of the Normandy campaign. For most of the summer, they did the job they were built for, firing from far back over the heads of the infantry.
Then the front reached the west wall and someone had an idea that the manual never contemplated. Drive the thing up to the pillbox and shoot the concrete in the face. The gun did nothing on its own. Six men served it. When a firing position was chosen, the driver eased the tall machine into place and the crew dropped the spade at the rear, letting it bite into the soil so the hull would not warp backward under the shock.

Then came the lifting. Each shell weighed about 95 lb, and a man had to carry it to the brereech, seat it, and stand clear before the next one. The vehicle held only 10 rounds of its own. So the second tracked carrier that traveled with it pulled up nearby and its crew fed the fight, hauling shell after shell from the 40 it carried.
There was almost no armor around any of six men stood in the open behind a gun the size of a telephone pole a few hundred yards from a slit that wanted them dead, and they loaded it by hand. Firing a heavy gun over open sights at a fortified target is a different task from lobbing shells over a hill, and it asked a great deal of the crew.
The gun had no armored shield worth the name around the men who worked. Every position they chose had to be scouted first because moving a slow, tall, tracked machine within a few hundred yards of a man firing slit in daylight invited a quick and fatal answer. So the guns came forward carefully, often under cover of darkness, brought into position singly rather than in a battery, and laid directly on the box while the infantry kept the neighboring slits busy.
From the 15th to the 24th of September, a battery detached to work with the 9inth Infantry Division took on this exact job. The record of those nine days is precise. 35 direct fire missions were assigned. 28 of them were pill boxes. The remaining seven were fortified houses and observation posts. Some boxes had to be hit two and three times before they gave.
16 of the missions ended in what the report calls complete success. That meant the box was destroyed outright or its wall was penetrated and in some cases the garrison surrendered directly to the fire of the M12. That last outcome is the one worth stopping on. Men gave up because of what the gun did, not because a rifleman finally reached the door.
Getting the gun into position for those missions was its own hard problem, and it shaped how the crews work. The country along the border was close and wooded in places, cut by ridges and farm tracks and the fringe of the Herkin forest. Ground that swallowed a slow machine, and gave a hidden observer plenty of time to call fire on it.
A 20tonon vehicle with a barrel jutting out over the front could not simply roll up to a firing slit in daylight and expect to survive the experience. So the guns moved forward a short distance at a time, screened by the infantry and often waiting for darkness, and each new position was scouted before the machine ever showed itself.
The reward for all that care was the shot itself. Once the gun was laid on the box, the range was short, the target did not move, and the crew could correct onto the same point with each round until the concrete failed. To understand why, you have to understand what a 155 mm shell does to 6 ft of reinforced concrete.
Because the concrete was the whole promise, the Americans learned the numbers by doing it. At ranges between 2,000 and 4,000 yd using a special fuse designed to bite into concrete before it burst, the gun needed 3 to five hits on the same spot to drive through 6 ft of reinforced concrete. That was the extreme case.
The heaviest walls against the common box with its 2 ft of wall. The work went faster. The shells were aimed at one point over and over, each one chewing deeper into the same crater the last had opened, until the wall failed, and the round went through into the chamber where the garrison lived. This is where every other gun in the American arsenal had already failed.
The 9inth Division and the units beside it had plenty of artillery, and they had tried the smaller weapons against the boxes first. The 57 mm anti-tank gun, the 75 and the 76 mm guns on the tanks and tank destroyers, even the 105 mm howitzer. All of them could scar a pill box and none of them could reliably break it.
A smaller round destroyed a box only with the luck of a shot straight through an open firing slit, which was a rare thing to manage against a slit built to be small and hard to hit. The reinforced concrete simply shrugged the lighter shells off. The heavy self-propelled gun was the answer precisely because it was heavy and because it could be brought close enough to hit the same square foot of wall again and again until that wall gave up.
The men inside did not have to wait for the wall to fail. A 95lb shell striking reinforced concrete a few feet from a man’s head delivers a blow that the body feels through the floor and the air at once. The concussion of the impact repeated hammered the garrison and the concrete itself turned into a weapon. When a heavy shell slams the outer face of a wall, the inner face can shatter and throw splinters of stone across the chamber, even when the wall as a whole still stands.
The men were shut inside a thick box that was now ringing like a struck bell and spitting fragments of its own walls at them. Dust alone in that closed concrete room under repeated heavy impact was enough to choke a position into silence. There was also the simple horror of the sound and the helplessness. Pillbox garrison could not shoot back at a gun that outranged everything they carried and stood beyond the reach of their firing slits ark.
They could only sit in the dark and take it, hit after hit, knowing the next round might be the one that came through. The choice narrowed fast to two options. Stay and endure another strike or open the door [music] and walk out. When the American artillery men wrote up their direct fire missions, they went beyond counting the boxes.
They tried to work out what the shelling had done to the men. Their source was the prisoners, the garrisons who had surrendered and were then questioned. And the conclusion they drew from those interrogations is a single sentence that says everything the specifications cannot. From prisoner of war reports, the artillery concluded that casualties due to concussion and the chipping of concrete had occurred in every case.
Every case. That meant every box they fired on, the ones that held as much as the ones that fail. Even where the wall held, the men behind it had been hurt by the shock of the impact and cut by the fragments their own shelter threw at them. That is the verdict the enemy handed down on the west wall, and it came out of the mouths of the men who had trusted it.
The concrete they had been promised was impregnable, did not have to be breached to defeat them. It had only to be struck hard enough, often enough, and it turned on the garrison it was built to protect. Walking out of a Westwool box with your hands up carried a heavy cost. A German soldier posted to a Westwool box in September had grown up hearing that this line was the shield of the Reich, the wall the French army had never dared to storm.
the reason the border was safe. He had been handed the strongest position most infantrymen would ever occupy and told to hold it. To open the door and step out with his hands up in [music] front of the men beside him meant admitting that the wall and the promise had both failed. The interrogation reports say they did it anyway, and they did it in every box.
The gun worked long enough. A soldier will endure a great deal before he quits a strong position. What the record shows is that the strong position stopped feeling strong the moment the shells kept landing on the same spot and the room filled with dust and flying stone and the ringing would not stop. There is one honest thing to say about the sources here, and it belongs in the story rather than hidden.
Nowhere in the surviving German records does an officer named the M12 and set down what it did to his men in his own words. The verdict does not come from a captured German document quoting the gun. comes from American interrogators writing down what the surrendered garrisons told them and from the American army’s own later assessment of the campaign.
That assessment reached the same place from the other direction. The United States Army’s official history of the sea creed line campaign found that against these boxes, the ordinary field pieces could not do the job. Guns of smaller caliber failed unless they put a round straight through a firing slit. Only the 155 mm self-propelled guns and heavier weapons could break the reinforced concrete at all.
And even they needed those three to five hits to do it. The history’s own summary of what heavy fire achieved against the boxes matches the artillery men’s report almost word for word. It states that this kind of shelling worked mainly by forcing the defenders to stay pinned inside their pill boxes or by causing the surrender of the demoralized occupants of a box that had taken a direct it.

The pattern held past those first nine days. Farther north in the sector of the 19th core, another battalion equipped with the M12, the 258th Field Artillery, began working the line by direct fire from the 26th of September.
Its method was the careful one the whole role demanded. One battery was put on direct laying with concrete piercing fuses. The guns were scouted in, brought up under cover of darkness, and used one at a time so as not to give away where the main attack would fall. The result was the same. The boxes were penetrated and several were beaten down into rubble and the same three to five hits per box appeared again in the afteraction findings.
The whole broad west wall reduction told the same story from every sector that a heavy gun was pushed into. In the 9inth division’s zone, over a stretch of about 6 weeks from the middle of September, well over a 100 pill boxes were cleared along with more than a thousand mines and dozens of other obstacles, much of it booby trap.
The boxes that fell to gunfire fell to the biggest guns brought to bear. It is worth being careful about how far to push the claim because the gun was good, but it was not magic. The same battalions that had worked the West Wall, the 557th and the 558th, were later sent south to help batter the ring of old forts around the city of Mets in the Lraine campaign that autumn.
The heavy guns hammered the fortifications there as well. But the American assault on one of those works, Fort Gryant, ran into deep masonry, underground galleries, and a determined garrison. And after brutal fighting, the attack was called off without taking the fort. A gun that could open a standard concrete pillbox with a handful of rounds could not on its own reduce a purpose.

And it is why a slow, ungainainely, nearly discarded machine ended up doing one of the most important jobs on the German border. The garrison had been sure of the concrete. The concrete was real, and it was thick, and against everything the German soldier had faced before, it had been enough.

The handful that had been built were worked hard through the rest of the war and then retired, and only a single one of the 100 still exists, kept at the Army’s artillery museum at Fort Sil in Oklahoma. It sits there quiet now, an old French barrel on an old American hull, easy to walk past.
The men who felt what it could do never forgot it. And the report they helped write, drawn from their own words in the questioning tent, is still the plainest verdict there is on the wall they had been promised no one could break.
