Every serious investigation into that story, from the Garand Collectors Association’s own 1952 technical memorandum to modern research by Jonathan Ferguson at the Royal Armouries in Leeds, reaches the same conclusion.
It did not happen as a real tactic. A small piece of ejecting steel is close to an audible under mortar fire, machine gun fire, and shouting. Even granting a soldier who somehow heard it, reloading a Garand took roughly 3 seconds, leaving an attacker standing in the open in full view of the other Americans nearby.
No captured Japanese training manual instructs troops to listen for it. The manuals captured in the field still described Americans carrying bolt-action Springfields. Japanese doctrine, in the most literal sense, was never briefed to listen for a rifle it did not know existed. The ping was a real flaw in the sense that it worried soldiers.
It was not a real flaw in the sense that it ever cost a documented life. And the army, which had stopped an entire production line in 1939 to fix a gas system that actually broke rifles, never touched the ping. No redesign of the clip, no order to muffle the ejection. That is the whole trick laid bare. An institution capable of telling the difference between a mistake that mattered and a mistake that only sounded like one.
The gas trap got a 10,000 round test, a formal ordnance committee recommendation, and a recall of 48,000 rifles, all finished before Pearl Harbor. The ping got nothing because nothing needed to be done. Two years and roughly 9 months separated the letter Guy Drewry wrote in March 1939 from the 4 seconds it took two Garands to stop a bayonet charge on Guadalcanal.
Every one of those months went into making sure the real flaw was gone before the war needed the rifle to work. Once the redesigned front end was standard, production climbed at a pace that should have worried anyone watching from Berlin or Tokyo. By January the 10th, 1941, nearly a year before Pearl Harbor, Springfield Armory was finishing 600 rifles a day.
At peak wartime output in January 1944, the Armory produced 122,000 rifles in 31 days, close to 4,000 a day, with women making up 43% of the workforce under the Women’s Ordnance Workers Program. Winchester ran a second line in New Haven. Between the two factories, more than 4 million M1 Garands were built by the war’s end, and every one of them carried the corrected gas system first tested in 1939.
The Marine Corps, which had warned its own men away from the rifle in 1941, ended the war as one of its heaviest users, carrying it from Tarawa through Guam, Tinian, Saipan, Peleliu, and Okinawa. Combat reports from Tarawa noted the action clearing normally under the same salt and sand conditions the 1940 Marine Board had flagged as a risk.
On January the 26th, 1945, with the Third Army driving into Germany, General George S. Patton wrote to Major General Levin H. Campbell, the Army’s Chief of Ordnance. Patton was not a man given to compliments. In his opinion, he wrote, “The M1 rifle was the greatest battle implement ever devised.
” John Garand himself never collected royalties on any of it. As a government engineer, his patents belonged to the United States, and a 1940 congressional bill to award him a one-time payment of $100,000 never passed. He retired in 1953, the millionth Garand off the line presented to him on his last day, and he died in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1974.
Go back to the two riflemen on the Henderson Field perimeter, 4 seconds, 16 rounds, a bayonet that never reached them. That moment was not luck, and it was not a superior rifle dropped fully formed out of an American factory. It was the product of a document signed in a Washington office in October 1939, admitting that a weapon already in soldiers’ hands was built wrong, and a decision to stop the line and fix it while there was still time.
Japan’s field manuals never caught up. The doctrine built to beat a five-round bolt gun met an eight-round semi-automatic the record books said should not have existed yet, and it broke against it from Guadalcanal to Saipan. The rifle is still fired today at the John C. Garand match at Camp Perry, Ohio, by shooters running actions designed by a French-Canadian boy who once swept the floor of a Connecticut textile mill.
