The .357 Lever Gun Nobody Wants — And Why They’re All Dead Wrong!

Everybody who dismisses this rifle is quoting a number from the wrong gun. That is the whole argument and I want it on the table before anything else. When somebody tells you a.357 lever gun is a cowboy toy, a pistol caliber compromise, a thing you buy because you cannot afford a real rifle. Ask him what velocity he is basing that on.

He will give you a revolver number because a revolver number is the only one anybody ever publishes. A 125 grain 357 Magnum out of a 4-in revolver runs about 1,450 feet per second and around 580 foot-lbs. That is the number on every box in every article in every comment section. Put that identical cartridge in a 20-in barrel and it leaves it right around 2,000 ft per second.

A 158 grain load will run 18 to,900 and land somewhere near 1200 ft-lb. That is not a small improvement. That is roughly double the energy from the same box of ammunition. And it is the single most under reportported fact in American shooting. So today I am going to make the case for the rifle nobody wants. Why nobody wants it, which reasons are wrong and which one is fair, the seven jobs it does better than anything else you can buy, the honest limits and which one to actually buy.

And the one I am going to recommend at the end is the cheapest one on the market, which breaks a rule this hobby has never questioned. Do not skip. First, why nobody wants it. Four reasons, and I want to take them seriously before I take them apart. Reason one, it does not look modern. A generation of shooters grew up on black rifles with rails and optics, and a walnut stock with a brass butt plate reads as costume to them.

So a working man looks at the category, sees $1,500 and walks away thinking it is a rich man’s toy. That is a market problem and not a rifle problem.

And I’m going to give you the way around it. Reason four, and this one is fair, so I am giving it to the other side. A tube-fed lever gun reloads slowly and it is not a magazine gun. That is a genuine limitation and I’m not going to argue with it. One out of four. Now, let me show you what it actually does. Here is what happens to this cartridge in a rifle barrel.

And it is worth understanding the mechanism because it tells you which barrel lengths matter. A 357 Magnum case holds a fairly large charge of relatively slow burning powder for a handgun cartridge. In a 4-in revolver barrel, a substantial amount of that powder is still burning when the bullet exits, which is why a magnum revolver produces such an enormous fireball in such a punishing muzzle blast.

All of that light and noise is wasted energy. It is powder that never got to push anything. Give it 16 to 20 in, and that powder finishes its work inside the barrel where it belongs. You gain 300 to 500 ft per second, depending on the load. The flash mostly disappears and the report drops to something reasonable. The same cartridge transformed because it finally got the barrel it was designed around in 1935.

Now here are the seven jobs it wins. One deer inside 125 yd. 1,200 ft-lb at the muzzle with a good expanding bullet is real deer medicine at Woods distance. For comparison, a30-30 puts about 1,900 ft-lbs at the muzzle. So, you are in the neighborhood of 60 to 65% of the classic American deer cartridge.

That is entirely sufficient inside its range. And inside its range is where the overwhelming majority of whitetail get shot in this country. The average distance is far shorter than internet arguments would have you believe. Check your state regulations because a few have minimum requirements that matter and know your own limit and stay inside it.

Two, recoil that lets anybody shoot it. A 357 carbine produces somewhere in the range of 5 to 7 ft-lbs of recoil. A30-30 is 11 to 13. A308 is around 18. That number is not a comfort feature. It is the entire reason a new shooter, a small frame shooter or an older shooter can put 50 rounds through this rifle in an afternoon and get better instead of firing eight and quitting.

Recoil is what builds flinches and flinches are what ruin shooters. Three, home defense, and this is the one people have not thought about. I made a whole video about how a 357 Magnum revolver fired indoors will deafen you and blind you, and it will. about 165 dB in a fireball in a dark hallway. Now fire the same cartridge from a 20-in barrel.

The powder burns inside the tube, so the flash largely goes away and the blast drops dramatically. You have a stock on your shoulder, so you can actually hit something. 10 rounds in the tube, almost no recoil, and an aiming system that anyone in the house can use. I am not going to tell you it beats a shotgun for everybody.

I am telling you that for a person who cannot run a 12 gauge and there are many. This is a genuinely serious answer that nobody puts on a list. Four, the suppressor host that nobody talks about. Feed a 357 carbine standard 38 special and you are firing a subsonic round out of a long barrel. Put a can on it and it is remarkably quiet because there is no sonic crack to deal with and the powder has already finished burning.

cheap, quiet, and effective on small game and pests at close range. There is not much else that does that job as well for the money. Five. Two guns, one cartridge. If you own a .357 revolver, this rifle eats the exact same ammunition. Same box on the shelf, same box in the truck, same box in the closet. One supply chain covering a handgun and a long gun is a genuine simplification and almost no other pairing in American shooting offers it this cleanly.

Six three cartridges in one rifle. It runs 38 special wad cutters at about 30 cents a round for practice which recoil almost not at all and are quiet. It runs 38 special plus P and it runs full house magnums for hunting and defense. Same rifle, same sights, same manual of arms. Three completely different power levels. That is the same virtue that makes a 357 revolver the best all-around handgun platform.

And it works identically in a rifle, and it means you can actually afford to practice. Seven, the shelf test. When things went bare in 2020, 38 Special and .357 Magnum were among the last handgun cartridges still sitting on pegs, while 5,56 and 9 mm were gone in a week. Not because they are better, because they are unfashionable. And unfashionable cartridges do not get panic bought.

A rifle that runs on the supply chain nobody is fighting over is worth something that does not show up on any spec sheet. Now the honest limits because I would rather you trust me than be impressed by me. The range ceiling is real. That bullet is heavy and blunt and it slows down fast. So the trajectory gets steep past 150 yard and it drops off a cliff after that.

This is a woods rifle and a brush rifle and it is not a western rifle. If your shots start at 200 yd, buy something else and do not let anybody talk you out of it. Twist rate matters and nobody mentions it. Most 357 rifles use a one-turn and 16 in twist, which handles everything well. A few, including some budget imports, have used considerably slower twists, and a slow twist will not stabilize heavy bullets properly.

Ask before you buy if you intend to shoot heavy loads. The reload is slow. Loading a tube magazine one round at a time under stress is not fast, and a side gate helps, but does not fix it. That is the fair criticism from earlier, and it stands. And ammunition is not cheap. 38 practice runs 30 cents or so. Magnums run 75 cents to a dollar and a quarter.

That is more than 22 and roughly comparable to 9 mm. And it is far less than any center fire rifle cartridge. So which one do you buy? There are four honest options and I will be quick. The Henry Big Boy Steel is the smooth one. 20-in barrel, 10 + 1, steel receiver, walnut, and the action out of the box is better than anything else at the price.

Around 900 to $1,000. If you want something you never have to touch, this is it. Older ones load only through the tube. Newer ones have a side gate, so check which you are getting. The Ruger made Marlin 1894 is the one everybody wants. Side eject, so optics mount cleanly. 10 + 1. Superb tolerances. Now that Ruger has it, 1 1200 to,500 street when you can find one and finding one is the problem.

The Maroku built Winchester 1892 is beautifully made and it is top eject which means scope mounting is a compromise 1200 and up. And then the one nobody wants, the Rossi R92. And here is the rule I am breaking. This hobby says you get what you pay for. Everybody believes it and it is usually true. in 357 levers. It is not.

And the R92 is the proof. It is built in Brazil on Browning’s 1892 pattern, which is worth understanding. That design uses vertical locking lugs that rise into the receiver behind the bolt, and it is stronger than the toggle link action in the pretty 1873 that costs three times as much. Browning drew it in 1892 to be a stronger, simpler, cheaper gun than what came before.

And Rossi has been building that same pattern for decades. 20-in barrel, 10 in the tube, roughly six pounds, sidegate on current production, and $6 to $700. Now, the honest problem, because there is one out of the box, quality varies. Roughly a third of the ones I have handled needed something. A burr on the loading gate, an action that felt gritty, a spring that wanted changing.

That is a real complaint and the internet is not making it up. Here is what nobody tells you. That is a $60 spring kit in an evening or it is 500 rounds of shooting and then the rifle runs. You are one hour of work away from a rifle that does the same job as the $1,500 one. So, the actual math is $700 plus $60 plus an evening against $1,500 for a stamp.

I know some of you wanted the JM Marlin here. I get it. I really do. It is the finer rifle. The fit and finish is better, and it will hold its value in a way the Rossi will not. And I said as much in my last video about what these things are worth. But strip the collector premium off it, and the numbers only point one way.

Both rifles shoot the same cartridge out of the same length barrel at the same velocity into the same deer at the same 80 yards. One of them costs $800 less. And $800 is about 2,000 rounds of 38 special. And 2,000 rounds of practice will do more for you than any amount of fit and finish ever will. Proven, common, affordable, and it runs when the fancy stuff quits. Spec, history, price.

It wins all three. One more honest thing before we close it out. There was never a performance case against it. And once you see the velocity difference, you cannot unsee it. Training beats gear every single time. The most important tool you own sits between your ears and your trigger finger. And a rifle you can afford to shoot 2,000 rounds through will make you better than a rifle you’re afraid to scratch.

If I could only keep three off this whole subject, it would be a.357 carbine because it does more jobs than anything else at the price. A.357 revolver to share the ammunition with it and a 22 because repetitions are still the thing that decides everything. Not because they are the flashiest, because they are proven.

They are right for the job. And they are the kind of thing you hand your kids someday. Buy proven, not hyped. And check which barrel that number came out of. All right, your turn.
