In 1944, Germany Attacked the Ardennes. Nobody Warned Them About the Proximity Fuze.

On the morning of December 16th, 1944, German infantry moved down toward the Sour River in the dark. And for the first hour, everything went the way Berlin had promised. [music] The snow was falling. The fog sat low in the valleys. The American planes that had hunted them for months were grounded, blind, [music] useless.

The men crossing that freezing water believed they were finally safe from the one thing they feared most, the sky. Nobody had told them about the shell. [music] Somewhere on the high ground above the river, American gunners were loading rounds tipped with a device the [music] United States had guarded almost as jealously as the atomic bomb.

A fuse with a miniature radio transmitter sealed inside it. A shell that did not need to strike the Earth to kill a man. When the fire order came, the artillery did not walk its rounds along the bank the old way in hope. It burst in the air roughly 30 ft above the heads of soldiers who had done everything correctly, who had spread out, who had thrown themselves flat into the snow.

The instant they heard the guns open up. Flat [music] into the snow was exactly where the new shell wanted them. It is a stretch of dense forest and steep river valleys straddling the border of Belgium and Luxembourg.

And in the winter of that year, it was almost silent. The American command treated it as a quiet sector, a place to rest divisions chewed up elsewhere and to [music] season green ones that had never seen combat. The line was thin. The men were cold. Nobody expected an army to come out of those trees.

Hitler expected exactly that. His plan was enormous and on paper insane. He would mass more than 200,000 men, including the rebuilt Panzer armies of the Waffan SS, and drive them west through the Arden toward the port of Antworp, splitting the American and British armies in two. It was the last great offensive Germany had in it.

And the entire gamble rested on one condition, the weather. What was about to unfold in those woods would become the largest and [music] deadliest single battle the United States Army fought in the entire war. Before [music] it ended, more than a month later, the Americans would count somewhere around 19,000 of their own men killed [music] and total casualties well past 80,000.

German losses would climb to roughly [music] 100,000 killed, wounded, or captured. This was not a skirmish on the edge of the map. This was the full weight of the war in the west. Brought down on a quiet forest that nobody had been watching. For most of 1944, Allied fighter bombers had ruled the daylight over the western front.

A German column that moved by day was a German column that died by day. So the offensive was timed for the worst winter weather the region could offer. Thick fog and heavy snow and a low gray ceiling that would nail the American air force to its runways. If the planes could not fly, the theory went, the Germans could move their armor in the open, and the one great American advantage would simply evaporate.

For the first days, the theory held. The fog came in exactly as ordered. The airfields went quiet. German infantry and SS Panzers poured out of the treeines with a confidence that had been missing since Normandy because the sky above them was empty and gray and harmless. And this is the part the German planners never accounted for.

When they took the airplanes out of the equation, they left the Americans holding a different weapon entirely. Not the one in the air, the one on the ground. Artillery. In the snow and the fog and the timber of the Arden, with the fighter bombers grounded, American field artillery became the heaviest club the United States Army had left to swing.

And in December of 1944, that club had just been fitted with something new. To understand why it mattered so much, you have to understand what artillery could and could not do to a man who was willing to lie down. For the entire history of the weapon up to that winter, a gunner trying to kill infantry in the open had two bad choices.

The first was a contact fuse, a shell set to explode the instant it struck something solid against troops in the open on hard ground. That was deadly enough. But the Arden was not hard ground. It was deep snow, frozen mud, and forest floor. A contactfused shell that buried itself in a snowbank before it went off sent most of its fragmentation and its blast straight down into the earth.

A man lying 20 ft away in a shallow hole might feel the ground jump and hear his ears ring and stand up unheard. Soft ground swallowed the shell’s fury. The second choice was a timed fuse. You could set a shell to burst in the air above the ground so the fragments rained down on men who thought they were protected. That was the dream.

An air burst over exposed infantry. Shrapnel coming from overhead [music] where no foxhole could stop it. But making it happen was a nightmare of arithmetic. The gunner had to predict exactly how long the shell would fly, set the fuse to that fraction of a second, and pray. get it wrong by a heartbeat and the shell burst too high and wasted itself in empty sky or too low and buried itself uselessly in the snow.

It required registration, careful ranging, a forward observer with eyes on the target and time in a fastmoving fight in bad visibility against a target that would not hold still. It almost never came together. The German infantryman understood [music] all of this in his bones. Even if he had never done the math, he knew that when the American guns opened up, his best chance of living was to get down [music] and get dug in and let the barrage roll over him. Dig a hole, get in it, ride it out.

It was the oldest survival lesson of the [music] whole war. And it worked because the physics were on his side. Picture it from inside the hole. The barrage comes in and the world turns to noise and shockwave and flying snow. and the shells punch down into the drifts around you and drive their steel into the frozen ground where it cannot reach you.

You keep your head down and your body low and you count the seconds and you live. You have done it before. You will do it again. That was the bargain the ground offered the infantry man and for the whole war the ground kept its end of it. The proximity fuse took the physics away from him. Here is what it was.

strip away the secrecy and the code names and it was at heart a tiny radio station riding inside the nose of an artillery shell. Packed into a space smaller than a fist were a miniature radio transmitter and receiver, an amplifier, a gas-filled electronic switch called a thyrtron, a capacitor to hold a charge, and a battery.

All of it built to survive being fired out of a cannon at speeds that should have smashed it to powder. When the gun fired, the transmitter woke up and began broadcasting a continuous radio signal out ahead of the shell. As the shell raced toward the ground, that signal [music] bounced off the earth and came back.

And because the shell was closing the distance so fast, the returning echo shifted and strengthened in a way the electronics could measure. This is the same effect you hear when a train horn changes pitch as it rushes past you. The shell was in effect listening to its own reflection. And the instant that reflection told it that it had reached the perfect killing height above whatever lay below, the thyrtron snapped shut, the capacitor dumped its charge into the detonator, and the shell exploded in the AIR at the right height every time, without a forward observer,

without perfect timing, without anyone on the ground having to guess. The cleverest piece of the whole design might have been the battery. A delicate electronic device needs power, but a normal battery sitting in storage would go dead long before the shell was ever used. So, the engineers sealed the batteries chemicals inside a thin glass ampule.

The violent shock of firing shattered the glass, and [music] the spin of the shell threw the liquid outward onto the battery’s plates, bringing it to life only in the last seconds of its existence. The shell built its own power source in the act of being fired. >> [music] >> The concept was not at its root American. It was British.

Researchers at Britain’s radar establishment, a team including Samuel Curran and William But worked out the radio Doppler principle and even coined the cover name that would follow it through the war. But Britain in 1940 was fighting for its life and had no capacity to miniaturaturize such a thing and mass-produce it by the millions.

So in the autumn of that year, as part of the same secret exchange that carried the cavity magnetron across the Atlantic, the British handed the idea to the Americans and asked them to make it real. The man who took it on was a physicist named Merl Touve, running a hand-picked group under the wartime research organization directed by Vanavar Bush.

The group was called blandly and deliberately section [music] T. It grew out of a quiet laboratory in Washington and eventually became the applied physics laboratory at John’s Hopkins. Tuveet drove his people with a single obsession, which was speed. He did not care about cost. He cared about time because men were dying while they worked and a [music] perfect fuse delivered too late was worth nothing.

He said it plainly to his laboratory. I don’t want any damn fool in this laboratory to save money. What his people built, others had to make by the millions. And the scale of it is difficult to hold in your head. Just over 22 million proximity fuses rolled off American production lines during the war.

It took 87 firms and [music] 110 factories to do it. A single company in Cincinnati produced more than 5 million fuses by [music] itself. The cost of a single unit fell from over $700 early on to $18 by the end. As the manufacturing was tamed, the whole program approached a billion [music] dollars in the money of the day.

War Department leaders would later rank its development second only to the atomic [music] bomb among the technical achievements of the war. And while that is a judgment rather than a fact, it tells you how the people closest to it understood what they were holding. Years later, a formal patent ruling would affirm that the core idea had indeed been British.

[music] Tuveet was gracious and blunt about it at once, noting that the design his laboratory actually delivered was not [music] the one the British had first made work. The concept crossed the Atlantic. The engineering that let it survive being fired from a cannon [music] and let it be built 22 million times over was American.

Both nations have a fair claim, and the [music] shell that fell on the Arden was the child of both. So they had a shell that could sense its own target [music] and kill men who thought they were safe. The obvious question is why the Americans sat on it for years before they let it kill a single German soldier on the ground. The answer is one word, fear.

Not fear of the weapon. Fear of losing it. The nightmare that haunted the men who controlled the fuse was simple. If they fired it over enemy troops on land, some shells would inevitably fail to explode. duds. And a dud is not gone. A dud is lying in the mud, intact, waiting to be picked up. If the Germans recovered even one unexloded proximity fuse, they could take it apart, understand it, and copy it.

Worse, they might work out how to jam it, how to send out a false signal that made every Allied fuse detonate harmlessly in empty air. And that was a catastrophe far larger than the Ardens because the very same fuse was the shield protecting Allied warships and cities from aircraft. Hand the Germans away to defeat it.

And you did not just lose a clever artillery trick. You blinded the anti-aircraft guns guarding the fleets and the skies over England. The early reliability made the fear [music] worse. In one of the first anti-aircraft tests, only about half the fuses functioned at all. Duds were common in those early years.

Every unreliable shell was another chance to compromise the greatest secret in the arsenal. So the rule was absolute. The fuse could be used only where the duds fell into the sea where no German could ever reach them. And at sea, it was a revelation. The very first combat use came aboard the cruiser Helena off Guadal Canal in January of 1943 when [music] a single proximity fused round knocked a Japanese dive bomber out of the sky.

[music] Across the Pacific, gunners who had spent whole engagements throwing up walls of flack that hit nothing suddenly found they could kill aircraft with a fraction of the shells. The fuse did not need a direct hit. It only needed to pass near [music] the target and it did the rest.

Word spread through the fleet fast. Gun crews who had once emptied their magazines into empty sky for every plane they knocked down found the arithmetic of [music] survival rewritten in their favor. A near miss was now a kill. Later, as kamicazi pilots dove on American ships, they flew into a curtain of fire that no longer had to be accurate, only close.

The fuse was saving ships and the men inside them, and every round of it burst harmlessly over open ocean where no enemy could ever fish [music] a dud out of the water and learn its secret. Then came the flying bombs. In the summer of 1944, Germany began raining V1 cruise missiles on England, small pilotless aircraft that were hard to shoot down because they were fast and low and left no crew to kill.

The proximity fuse changed that fight almost overnight. Paired with new radar and automatic gun directors, the anti-aircraft belt along the English coast went from destroying a small [music] fraction of the incoming bombs to destroying the overwhelming majority. In the last week of that campaign, the guns were knocking down nearly 3/4 of everything the Germans sent.

And on the best day, the figure climbed higher still. The same fuse later helped defend the vital port of Antwerp. But all of that was over water or over friendly ground where wreckage could be guarded. The line the Americans would not cross was firing the thing over enemy soldiers, where the ground beneath belonged to the other side.

In late October of 1944, the Combined Allied Command finally approved the fuse for use over land, but only in the anti-aircraft role. The step of firing it directly at enemy infantry over enemy held terrain was still forbidden. And then Hitler attacked the Ardens, and a rule that had held for 2 years lasted about one morning.

The first ground firings of the proximity fuse at the Battle of the Bulge did not come down through a careful chain of command. They came from officers on the spot who decided in the middle of a disaster that the moment had arrived. On that opening morning near the town of Moscow on the far northern edge of the German assault, American field artillery fired proximityfused shells over attacking German infantry in support of the cavalry screen holding the line there.

It is widely described as among the first and possibly the very first use of the fuse against ground troops in the European theater. and it happened before the Supreme Commander had signed off on anything. The records still argue over exactly which battery fired those first rounds.

Some accounts name one field artillery group, some name another, and popular retellings have even gotten the commanding officer’s first name wrong for decades. The man most carefully credited with it was a colonel named Oscar Axelson, a West Point officer commanding a field artillery group on that shoulder of the attack. The precise unit remains contested in the sources and an honest telling leaves that argument on the table rather than pretending it [music] is settled.

What is not contested is the tactical fact. On the first morning of the largest battle the American army would fight in the entire war. Someone made the call to break the seal [music] on the secret and the shells burst in the air over the advancing Germans. 3 days later on the 19th of December, Eisenhower formally requested clearance [music] to use the fuse against ground targets.

The prohibition that had stood [music] for nearly 2 years was lifted within about 2 days, weeks ahead of the release that had already been quietly planned for around Christmas. [music] The emergency in the forest had simply overrun the caution. The leash was off. Now the question was [music] what it could do to an army caught in the open.

If the Germans could turn it, their panzers had open road toward the Muse River and beyond. Standing in their way was a low ridge held by a mix of American divisions. The green and untested 99th infantry division alongside the veteran second infantry division soon reinforced by the first and the ninth. In the villages below the ridge at Krinkl and Rocherath, the fighting was some of the most desperate of the war.

And behind and above all of it on the ridge itself sat the American guns. Elsenborn was the one sector along the entire front of the bulge where the Germans never broke through. Not once.

And the reason more than any other single thing was artillery. The American divisions [music] had masked their field artillery battalions where they could pour fire down onto the German assault formations as they crossed the open snow-covered ground below the ridge. When those [music] assaults came, the guns answered with a weight of fire that stunned everyone who witnessed it.

And among those shells were the new proximityfused rounds bursting in the air over the attacking infantry. The effect on men caught crossing open ground was annihilating. Soldiers who went to the earth for cover found that the earth no longer helped them because the fragments were coming down from above. At the hamlet of Dom Bukinbach, where a single American regiment held against repeated assaults by SS Panzer Grenaders, the Graves registration teams afterward counted the dead in front of the American positions in the hundreds. In

front of that one regiment’s line alone, they counted some 782 German bodies. Here, honesty matters because a knowledgeable audience will demand it. The histories credit the defense of Elsenborn to massed artillery of every kind firing together. And the sources do not cleanly separate how many of those killing rounds carried the proximity fuse and how many were ordinary shells.

So the fair statement is not that the fuse alone held the ridge. It is that the proximity fuse was a significant new multiplier riding on top of an already devastating wall of American artillery. and that together they made Elsenborn a place the German army could not pass. The ridge held because of the guns.

The fuse made the guns worse to stand under than they had ever been. Bastonia belongs in this story, too, though more quietly. When German armor swept around and surrounded that crossroads town, it was the artillery of the encircled defenders, directed by an acting commander, who was himself an artilleryman, that helped break assault after assault against the perimeter.

Proximity fused fire is credited among the guns that held Bastonia, though the roundby round record there is thinner than at Elsenborn, and honesty [music] means saying so out loud. What is certain is the pattern. Wherever American artillery could catch [music] Germans moving in the open that winter, the new fuse made the catching lethal.

[music] For the richest picture of what that meant to the men on the receiving end, you have to go to the southern shoulder, to the Sour River, and the town of Ectook, and to the general who had been waiting for this exact moment. George Patton had personally [music] watched a demonstration of the proximity fuse on the 16th of December, the very day the German offensive began, and he understood immediately what it could do.

He ordered the shells held back, kept in reserve until a target came along worth spending the secret on. As his third army wheeled north to strike the underside [music] of the German bulge, that target appeared. Elements of an American infantry regiment, [music] the 10th infantry of the fifth infantry division under Colonel Robert Bell, pushed up onto hills overlooking Ectern and the sour.

Below them in plain view was a German division trying to force its way across [music] the river. And the Germans had no cover worth the name. They were crossing a wooden bridge, paddling rubber boats, [music] waiting and swimming the freezing water, packed into the open with a river at their backs and high ground full of American observers to their front.

The gunners called what they did next a Christmas present for the Germans. >> [music] >> The proximity fused shells came in and burst about 30 ft over the water and the crossing sights and there was nowhere to go. You cannot dig a foxhole in a river. [music] You cannot take cover from something that explodes above you while you are chest deep in [music] current holding a rifle over your head.

The fire was so murderous that the German assault [music] simply broke apart. The survivors turning and running back into the town they had come from. Patton put the count of the dead at around 700. In one of his letters, he was more precise, [music] describing a German battalion caught trying to cross the sour and killed by actual count at 702.

The Germans themselves left behind [music] the most chilling evidence of what it did to them. When the Americans went through captured documents from the units they had shattered, they found notes recording the terrible effect of a new artillery fuse on the prisoners. The enemy was writing reports to itself about a weapon it could not identify.

And it is worth stopping on who those men in the river actually were. Many of them were boys 17 and 18 years old, poorly trained conscripts of a Volk grenadier division told they would have panzers and paratroopers and air support at [music] their side. None of it came. What came instead was falling snow, a river, and a rain of steel out of the sky above them.

It is possible to tell this story with respect for what the fuse meant to the war and still feel the weight of what it meant on that riverbank. Both things are true at once. The most haunting part of the whole story is that the Germans never understood what was killing them. Prisoners tried to describe it and could not.

They spoke of quick, powerful bursts overhead against which there was no defense. Because the shells arrived faster than sound, the men often never heard the guns before the air above them tore open. They knew they were facing something new. They could not work out what it was or how to escape it. And crucially, German intelligence never determined [music] the principle behind the fuse during the war.

They never learned it was a radio. Germany’s own proximity fuse research had been shut down years earlier in 1940. And now on the other side of the line, the thing they had abandoned was being used to slaughter their sons, and they could not even name it. No German countermeasure was ever developed because the Germans never solved [music] the puzzle of what the puzzle even was.

Think about what that means for a soldier. Every weapon you have ever faced, you can at [music] least understand. You know what a machine gun is and where to hide from it. You know a mortar drops from above and you learn its rhythm. But this was fire that found you when you had done everything right. That ignored the cover that had saved your life a hundred times.

That came from an enemy who had in effect [music] taught his shells to know when they were over your head. There is a particular kind of terror in being killed by something you cannot comprehend. The prisoners at Extternok felt [music] it and they had no words for it and neither did their officers.

Which brings us at last to the line, the title of this video was built on. After the battle, Patton wrote of the weapon with a soldier’s blunt gratitude. The funny fuse won the battle of the bulge for us. It is a magnificent quote and it is exactly the kind of clean decisive claim that makes for a good story and a serious channel owes its audience the truth about it which is more complicated and in a way more interesting.

[music] No single weapon won the Battle of the Bulge. The United States Army’s own official history is [music] careful to note that only limited use was made of the proximity fuse on the ground before January of 1945, largely in situations where poor visibility would have defeated the older timed fire. Anyway, Patton’s line is the enthusiasm of a commander who had just watched something extraordinary, not the verdict of a historian.

There is even a fair limitation to acknowledge that in the thick forest, the fuse could be triggered early by the tree canopy, referencing its burst to the treetops rather than to the men below. So its true advantage was greatest in the open, over snow fields and river crossings and forming up areas exactly like the sour. The bulge was won by many things at once.

It was won on Elsenborn Ridge by men who would not leave it. It was one at Bastonia where a surrounded airborne division and its artillery held a critical crossroads. It was one when the weather finally broke around the 23rd of December and the American fighter bombers rose off their runways at last and fell on the German columns in the open.

It was won by German fuel tanks running dry and German supply lines strangling. The proximity fuse was one powerful thread in that rope. The threat that made already formidable American artillery markedly more lethal against exposed infantry at the worst possible moment for the men attacking. That is the honest version.

It is less tidy than Patton’s sentence and it is truer and it takes nothing away from what the gunners did on those ridges. And if you would rather tell it the simple way, the way Patton did, you can. The quote is real. But the men who study this battle for a living would want you to know what sits underneath it.

The fuse kept doing its work as the Americans shoved the Germans back out of the bulge and on toward the rine. In the Yorken forest, American gunners caught a German patrol with a proximity fused time on target shoot every battery’s rounds time to arrive in the same [music] instant and afterward counted 96 dead.

An ordinance officer who walked the ground said the men looked as though they had gone through a meat grinder. It was the same lesson the boys at the sour had already learned against soldiers caught in the open. There was no longer any such [music] thing as taking cover. The secret did not stay a secret for long after the guns went cold.

Once the war ended, the veil came off and the proximity fuse was celebrated openly as one of the great technical achievements of the Allied effort spoken of in the same breath as radar and the bomb. Across the drive from the Ardens to the Rine, proximityfused [music] anti-aircraft fire brought down more than a thousand German aircraft.

And in the Bulge [music] itself, Allied gunners destroyed hundreds of planes with it. The idea at the center of it, a munition that senses its own target and detonates [music] at the perfect distance, turned out to be one of those ideas that reshapes everything it touches. The same laboratory that built the Fuse went on to build the guided missiles that became the first post-war surfaceto-air weapons.

The air burst over infantry technique came back in later wars under new names. Radio and Doppler proximity fusing is simply standard now. Buried inside artillery and missiles and warheads that no soldier ever thinks about. All of it descended from a glass ampule and a spinning shell in the winter of 1944. The Germans lost the Ardens to many things, to fuel and to weather and to the men on Elsenborn Ridge who refused to give it up.

But some of them lost it to a thing they never saw. Fired by men they never reached. Exploding in an empty patch of gray winter air a few feet above their lives. They had planned so carefully around the danger from the sky. They had picked their weather and timed their attack and grounded the planes. And the sky killed them anyway in a form they were never warned about and never understood.
