Its very name, meaning something close to hut or shack in the local French dialect, hinted at how little there had ever been to defend, just a handful of farm buildings, a small inn, and mile after mile of open pasture running off toward the tree lines in every direction. American commanders understood the danger the moment their maps showed how thin the defenses around that crossroads truly were.
On the night of December 19th, 1944, a major named Arthur C. Parker arrived at Baraque de Fraiture with what remained of his own artillery battalion, the 589th Field Artillery, a unit that had already been badly mauled retreating from earlier fighting further east. That insatiable appetite for ammunition created problems that reached far beyond the crossroads itself, rippling back through an already overstretched American supply system.
