Numbers helped.
Numbers alone were not the answer. What made the numbers effective was the same principle we have returned to throughout this story. Using multiple tanks not simply as more targets thrown at the same problem, but as a way to attack from multiple directions at once, forcing a single German crew to choose which threat to engage first, while other American vehicles maneuvered into position on its flank.
It is also worth being honest about what Sherman tanks could and could not do against Tiger armor in a straight exchange. The standard American 75mm gun carried by most Shermans through much of this period struggled badly against Tiger frontal armor at typical combat ranges. Later variants carrying a 76 mm gun improved that picture somewhat, but even then a frontal shot against a Tiger’s thick glacus plate remained a difficult and unreliable proposition.
This is precisely why the flanking principle mattered so much in practice. Not as an elegant theoretical preference, but as a hard technical necessity. American crews who tried to win a frontal gunnery duel against a Tiger were gambling against unfavorable odds. American crews who maneuvered for a shot at the thinner side or rear armor, or who let artillery and tank destroyers change the equation before their own guns ever had to fire, were playing a fight they could actually win.
There is a broader lesson buried inside this story, one that reaches beyond tanks and beyond this single winter campaign. Superior equipment does not automatically decide the outcome of a fight, if the other side controls the conditions under which that fight takes place. The Tiger was a genuinely superior machine in the specific circumstances it was designed for.
But war rarely allows either side to choose its circumstances freely. And the army that adapts fastest to changing conditions, that refuses to accept the enemy’s preferred terms, often finds a way to win, even against better hardware. Patton’s forces did not need to build a tank as good as the Tiger to beat the Tiger.
They needed to make the Tiger’s advantages matter less, engagement by engagement, village by village, until the accumulated weight of flanking maneuvers, combined arms pressure, and relentless movement had done what no single Sherman gun could ever have done alone. The Tiger was designed to dominate one particular kind of fight, a fight fought at range, on ground of its own choosing, with time to aim and fire before the enemy could close the distance.
Patton’s forces again and again across Lraine and through the frozen roads of the Ardens refused to give it that fight. They did not need to prove the Tiger wrong about what it could do. They only needed to make sure it rarely got the chance to do it.
