How One Engineer’s Wire Trap Stopped a Tiger Tank—and Trapped Three More
It weighs 8 o. You could hold it in one hand and forget you were holding it. No trigger, no fuse, no moving parts at all. It was never fired, never thrown, never aimed. There’s no serial number on it, no makaker mark, no patent, no drawing of it filed in any office in Washington or London. Nobody approved it.
Nobody ordered it into production because there was nothing to produce. Today, it sits behind glass in a museum in Georgia. in a case with the humidity controlled to within a few percent because the people who look after it are worried about rust. That’s the only thing threatening it now, rust. Most visitors walk straight past. It looks like something you’d find coiled behind a water heater in a basement.
Frayed steel. A few flakes of green fabric insulation still clinging on. The kind of thing you’d throw in a bin without thinking twice. And on the morning of June 28th, 1944, that thing stopped 56 tons of German steel in under 3 seconds. Not damaged it, not slowed it down, stopped it in the middle of a road in Normandy with the engine screaming and the commander standing up in his hatch, shouting into a radio that nobody was answering fast enough.
Here’s the part that I find genuinely hard to get my head around. To understand how it happened, you have to understand that this story has two engineers in it, not one. Two. The first engineer worked in castle in central Germany in a heated drawing office with a slide rule and a drafting table and the full industrial weight of a nation behind him.
He had four years. He had a budget that was for practical purposes whatever he asked for. He had access to metallurgists, to test tracks, to prototypes he could break and rebuild. He was solving one of the hardest problems in mechanical engineering at the time. How do you make a 68 ton box of armor plate ride smoothly enough that a gunner can hit a target while the thing is still moving? He solved it. He solved it beautifully.
And in solving it, he drew a 3-in gap into the blueprint. And he was completely right to do it. The second engineer had 90 seconds. His name was James Mallister, 23 years old. Before the war, he wired houses in Pittsburgh, mostly on the south side. Mostly rewiring places built in the 20s that were never designed to run a refrigerator and a radio at the same time.
He carried a union card in his wallet with a coffee stain on it. He had a sister who wrote him letters he didn’t always answer. He was not a tactician. He’d never read a word of armor doctrine in his life. He was a man who spent his 20s crawling into crawl spaces figuring out where other people’s work went wrong.
And that, as it turns out, is exactly the skill that mattered that morning. Because the thing that killed the Tiger tank was already inside the Tiger tank. Mallister didn’t put it there. The Germans did. All he did was introduce them to each other, the tank first, because none of the rest of this lands if you don’t understand what a Tiger was.

By the summer of 1944, it wasn’t really a vehicle anymore. It was a rumor with tracks. Allied crews were reporting tigers everywhere, and intelligence officers knew perfectly well that most of those sightings were Panzer 4s or STOs, or in a couple of embarrassing cases, a shed. But you couldn’t talk men out of it. A Sherman crew hearing Tiger on the ridge over the radio made slower decisions than a crew hearing enemy armor.
More careful ones, sometimes fatal ones, because hesitation in a tank fight is its own kind of wound. The numbers earned the reputation. 54 tons empty, closer to 57 loaded with fuel, ammunition, crew, and all the junk. Five men accumulate living inside a machine. 4 in of hardened steel across the front. an 88 mm gun originally designed to shoot down aircraft at altitude, which tells you everything you need to know about the velocity.
At 1,000 m, it would punch through the front of a Sherman and keep going out the other side. And American crews found that out the way you find most things out in a war, which is by having it happen to friends. 700 horsepower from a Maybach V12 in the back. tracks 2 ft wide and each one cost something like 650,000 Reichkes marks and 300,000 man-h hours.
Germany built roughly 1,400 of them across the entire war. Not 14,000, 1,400. America built 49,000 Shermans and would happily have built more if anyone had asked. So the Tiger sat in a strange position. It won almost every fight it was in and it lost the war it was in. Which meant that on the ground in a field at 6:00 in the morning, an American platoon that heard those engines had exactly one realistic plan.
And the plan was to stay alive long enough for someone with bigger guns to arrive. Now, this is the part nobody puts in the movies, and it’s the only part that matters. Look at a photograph of a tiger from the side and try to count the road wheels. Most people get it wrong because you’re not looking at one row.
You’re looking at three overlapping nested into each other like coins fanned out on a table. Eight aside interled. The number isn’t the point. The overlap is the Germans called the assembly the lof work the running gear. And it was probably the most carefully calculated part of the entire vehicle. Here’s why.
A tank that heavy has a problem. All that weight has to go somewhere and where it goes is into the ground under the tracks. Get it wrong and the machine sinks into a wet field and becomes a very expensive pillbox. So you spread the load. More wheels on more track. More track pressing on more soil. The Tiger came out at roughly 14.
8 lb per square in of ground pressure, which is remarkable. Lighter tanks did worse. A man standing on one foot does worse. The overlapping did something for the crew, too. Interleved wheels smooth out the ride enormously because the shocks get shared and staggered instead of arriving all at once.
A smoother ride means a steadier gun, and a steadier gun means you can shoot while moving and actually hit something. Tiger crews were landing shots from a rolling vehicle that other crews had to stop to take. It was by any honest measurement excellent engineering. And it created narrow vertical channels between the wheel rims, places where two wheels came within a few inches of each other without touching because they had to clear each other to rotate roughly 3 in at the tightest points.
That gap wasn’t sloppiness. It was a tolerance. Somebody calculated it, argued about it, wrote it down, and signed it. If you have ever worked with machinery, your stomach is already turning over slightly because you know what gaps like that do. They eat things. The Germans found that out long before any American did.
In Russia, the spaces between the wheels packed solid with mud, and the mud froze overnight, and crews spent the first two hours of every morning chipping their own suspension free with entrenching tools and bayonets, and when that failed, blow torches. In North Africa, sand ground the rubber rims down like a lathe. Stones cracked tires.
A loose length of chain picked up by a drive sprocket outside Kursk tore through track links before the crew could stop it. Repair was its own nightmare. To change an inner road wheel, you first had to pull off the outer wheels blocking access. Up to eight of them. half a day with the right tools on flat ground in daylight, which is almost never the situation when you need to change a road wheel.
So, here’s the uncomfortable thing sitting under this whole story. The Tiger suspension was not a flaw. It was the best answer to a real problem in conditions that a war does not provide. Mallister saw one of them up close exactly once before the morning that counted, 4 days after Omaha. His company, combat engineers attached to the first infantry division, got handed the usual engineer job, which is the job nobody else wants.

Clear the roadblocks. Somewhere south of a village called Maragnney, they found a tiger sitting in a farm track, abandoned, hatches open, nothing dramatic about it. It hadn’t been hit. It had run out of fuel, which by that summer was how a startling number of German tanks ended their careers. Most of the platoon did what anyone would do.
Took photographs, sat on the barrel. Mallister walked the length of it twice, then got down on his knees in the dirt next to the running gear. He put his hand into the wheels, ran his fingers along the edge where two rims nearly met, the way you’d check a gap in a cabinet before you fit something into it. The tire on the second wheel had a crack in the rubber, and the stone that had done it was still wedged in there, a piece of French limestone about the size of a walnut.
He noticed, and this is the observation the whole morning turned on, that the geometry of it pulled inward and upward. Anything that caught in there wouldn’t be pushed out. It would be drawn deeper. The rotation itself would do the work. That’s not a soldier’s thought. That’s a tradesman’s thought.
It’s what you think when you’ve spent years pulling wire through conduit and watching what happens when it snags. Then someone shouted at him to get moving and he got moving and he didn’t mention it to anyone. Why would he? What would you even say? 3 weeks later, his platoon was dug in south of Kerrantan in terrain that the allies had somehow failed to plan for despite having aerial photographs of it for years.
The Boage, nobody who fought in it ever described it kindly. These were hedros, but calling them hedros undersells it badly. They were earthbanks 4t high or more, built up over centuries of farmers, clearing stones and throwing the dirt to the edges of their fields, then grown over with hawthorne and bramble and roots as thick as your wrist.
They divided Normandy into thousands of smallwalled enclosures, each with maybe one or two gaps in it. From the air, it looked like farmland. From the ground, it was a maze designed by someone who hated you. The Americans had trained for open country, sweeping armored advances across ground that looked like Kansas.
All of that died in the Boage. Tanks couldn’t maneuver, and when they tried to climb a bank, they exposed their thin belly armor at the top, which German gunners learned to wait for. Visibility on the ground sometimes dropped to 20 ft. The Germans had four years to prepare, and they used them. every crossroads pre-registered for mortar fire, every gap covered by machine guns cighted to shoot across each other.
They didn’t need to hold. They needed to charge rent because every day the Allies spent in that maze was another day to move reserves toward Khn and Santlow. Mallister’s platoon had been in the line 18 days. They’d gained about 2 miles and lost 11 men. The replacements were 19 and 20 and had been in Europe under a week.
A kid named Douly from Otmoir couldn’t tell a German machine gun from an American one, which sounds like a small thing and is not because one of those sounds means get down, and the other means keep moving, dig deeper, stay lower, move when I move. Some of them learned, some didn’t get the time. June 28th, 5:30 in the morning. The Germans came and they didn’t come carefully. This wasn’t a probe.
It was a full armored push aimed at cutting the beach head in half. Panza grenaders on halftracks, infantry working forward through the hedges on both flanks, and at the front of it, four Tigers from the 1001st heavy Panza Battalion. Intelligence had actually called this one. Radio intercepts had placed the unit in the sector 3 days earlier, and the men in the holes had been told.
And it turns out being told does almost nothing for you because a briefing cannot reproduce the sound. Mallister heard them before anyone saw them. You feel it in your chest first. A low irregular thudding you mistake for your own heartbeat until you realize your heartbeat isn’t that slow. Then the tracks on the cobbles echoing between the banks so you can’t tell direction.
Then dust shaking loose off the bramble over your head. The platoon was in a sunken road running across the German line of advance. 32 men, two bazookas, orders to hold until relieved or overrun, which is the army’s polite way of saying hold until overrun. Everybody knew the orders were honest. Nobody at battalion expected 32 men with two bazookas to stop four Tigers.
The job was to make the Germans slow down, deploy, and stay in one place long enough for the artillery to find them. 30 minutes would count as a success. Whether the platoon was still there afterwards was, in the arithmetic of that summer, a secondary question. At 6:15, the first Tiger came out of the mist.
Four gray shapes in a loose diamond, keeping to the road where the ground held, guns elevated for the kind of shooting you do against men in holes. The lead tank was 200 m out when it fired. The shell hit a farmhouse to Mallister’s left, and the building came apart, not collapsed. Came apart. Stone and roof timber blown outward in a cloud, and the pressure of it put every man in the road flat against the dirt.
Then the second tank fired, then the third. The sound of an 88 is flat and hard, and it arrives all at once. Nothing like the rolling boom of American howitzers. A crack, then the shell noise, then the impact. All three so close together that your brain files them as one event. And they were firing high explosive, not armorpiercing.
That detail told Malister exactly what was happening. The Tigers weren’t hunting tanks. They were clearing people. Shell the hedge. Roll forward 50 m. Shell it again. Let the infantry walk through what’s left. They’ve done it a thousand times in Russia. against defenses a great deal better than four foxholes and a ditch.
The bazookas were decoration at that range and Malister knew the numbers because engineers get taught the numbers. An M1 would get through about 3 in of armor in ideal conditions at 100 m hitting square on. The Tiger’s front was 4 in face hardened and angled so that most hits arrived at the wrong angle anyway.
The only places worth shooting were the engine deck and the lower rear hull, which meant letting a Tiger drive past your position and then standing up behind it. Standing up behind a tank with a machine gun on the back deck and infantry following it. That was the tactic. That was what the manual had. Mallister looked at the road instead.
15 ft wide, hard packed dirt with old cart ruts in it. banks either side too dense and too soft to carry a tank. Engineers had checked that themselves three days earlier and written it up, which is the least interesting job in the army right up until the moment it isn’t because it meant Malister knew one thing for certain.
The Tigers had exactly one route through this stretch of Bokehage, single file, walking pace, blind to both flanks. And he was still holding a coil of communications wire, 300 ft of braided steel telephone cable, an eighth of an inch thick, rated somewhere around 200 lb of tensile strength. He’d been carrying it for a field telephone run that nobody was going to need.
Now, 200 lb against 56 tons. put like that, it’s a joke. You could wrap that wire around a Tiger’s gun barrel and the crew wouldn’t feel it. Every anti-tank weapon that has ever worked has worked through energy. Explosive force, a shaped charge jet, a solid shot moving fast enough that physics does the rest.
Wire has none of that. Wire is nothing. But Mallister wasn’t thinking about stopping a tank. He was thinking about a 3-in gap that pulled inward and a crack in a rubber tire and a piece of limestone the size of a walnut. He ran 50 m down the sunken road, bent double below the lip where the gunners couldn’t pick him out.
The road curved slightly there, which gave him maybe 8 seconds of dead ground. And in that curve, he found the thing he needed, which was the kind of luck you can’t plan for and can only be ready to use. Two fence posts, oak weathered gray 18 in across, sunk three feet into the bank on either side.
They’d held a farm gate once. The gate was long gone. The posts were still there because whoever put them in had done it properly. Some Norman farmer, probably dead 30 years by then, who would never know what his afternoon’s work was about to do. Mallister tied off on the left post. Three wraps, then a triple fisherman’s knot, which tightens under load instead of slipping.
His father taught him that one for securing conduit in a basement in Pittsburgh. And there is something about that detail I keep turning over. Then he walked the wire across the road, hauling it tort with his hands and his weight. Not chest height, not knee height, ankle height, 8 in off the dirt, maybe less.
Low enough to feed into the running gear, high enough to stay clear of the ruts. Three wraps on the right post. Same knot. foot against the wood, pulling until the cable sang when he touched it. In the shadow of the bank at 6:00 in the morning, it was effectively invisible. A gray line on gray dirt at the height where nobody looks.
He had about 90 seconds left. He got back to his hole and said nothing to anyone. Not to Douly, not to the sergeant, not to the lieutenant on the radio. And that silence is the most human part of the whole story because what he’d just done was on paper absurd. If it failed, he’d have burned 90 seconds and a spool of wire while four tigers shelled his friends.
If he said it out loud, somebody would have to have an opinion about it. So he kept it in his mouth and watched the road. 620. The lead tiger came into the sunken road. 4 km an hour. Engine throttled right back to save fuel. The commander’s hatch was open, and an officer in black stood half out of it, scanning the banks.
Because in close country, a buttoned up tank is a blind tank, and every German tanker knew it. The main gun was traversed left, laid on the hedge where the platoon was, 20 m to the wire. 15 10 Then physics took over, and it took over so fast that nobody in the road properly understood what they just watched.
The wire didn’t break. The posts didn’t pull. That cable was thinner than the gap between the wheels. So in theory, it should have slipped straight through and been dragged along for a few feet before snapping. But the angle was wrong. And wrong here means wrong for the Germans. Instead of passing between the rims, it caught on the lower edge of the third road wheel, and the tank’s own forward motion pulled it up and in.
One loop, two, three. The interleved wheels did exactly what Mallister had worked out on his knees in that farm track 3 weeks earlier. They fed. Every degree of rotation pulled more wire in, and the more went in, the harder it gripped. The cable wedged into the channel between the second and third wheels, bit into the rubber, found purchase, and turned into a ratchet.
200 lb of tensile strength, multiplied by the leverage of a wheel turning under 56 tons. The wheels locked to each other. The left track seized. The right track kept going. The driver felt it through the steering levers before he understood it. Dead weight on one side and a tank swinging left when he hadn’t asked it to.
And he did what almost anyone does in that half second, which is exactly the wrong thing. He gave it throttle. 700 horsepower tried to drag a locked track forward. The right track dug in and threw dirt over the hull. The tank pivoted on its jammed left side 15° in about 2 seconds. And inside the running gear, the loads went somewhere they were never designed to go. Something snapped.
Not the wire. The wire held. The torsion bar on the third road wheel went first, which is exactly what you’d expect because the torsion bar is the part taking the twist. Then a mounting bracket bent. The hull lurched, dropped, and stopped. The engine howled and black smoke came up out of the exhausts as the governor tried to make sense of a load it couldn’t move and the driver killed it before the Mayback destroyed itself.
Elapse time from contact to dead stop somewhere around 2.8 seconds. A 68 ton tank sitting at an angle across a 15 ft road with three more Tigers behind it. The commander came up out of his hatch, looked back, looked forward, and got on the radio. Mallister didn’t speak a word of German, but said afterwards that he understood the tone perfectly.
You always do. That tone is the same in every language. Think about the box those crews were suddenly in. They couldn’t reverse because backing a tank that size down a narrow sunken road needs a man on the ground guiding you and sight lines nobody has in Bokehage, and the road behind was full of the rest of the column.
They couldn’t go around because the banks were 4 ft of packed earth and root and a tiger trying to climb one would either bog in the soft ground behind it or throw a track on the way up and they couldn’t leave it because standing orders were absolute. You did not abandon operational armor to the enemy.
Four of the most feared tanks in the world nose totail on a single lane enclosed country with American infantry on both flanks. This was the exact scenario German armored doctrine had been written to prevent, and a man with a spool of telephone wire had produced it in under 3 seconds. The second Tiger tried to shove the first one clear, closed to 5 m, revved up, pushed. Nothing moved.
The locked track had turned the lead tank into an anchor. 50 odd tons pressing down through a seized assembly. After half a minute, the second tank’s own track started slipping, and its rubber began to smoke. and that commander had the sense to stop before he wrecked his own running gear. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Ree was on the radio with the only weapon that mattered now, which was a map reference.
Fire mission 626. Three batteries of 105s high explosive variable time fuses set for air burst. And the target was not the tanks because American artillery could not crack a Tiger’s roof and everybody knew it. The target was the infantry in the hedges on either side of them. The first rounds came in at 6:30 and burst 20 ft above the banks.
Air burst fragmentation goes downward into the exact places men take cover from ground burst shells and the hedros offered nothing against it. The pans grenaders broke. Some ran back down the road. Some tried to shelter behind the tank holes which worked for a few minutes. Inside 2 minutes, the Tigers were alone, and a tank without infantry in close country is a blind animal in a pit.
The machine guns couldn’t depress far enough to reach the base of their own hulls. Any determined man with a satchel charge could walk up on them from an angle the crew couldn’t see. That was a trade German doctrine made on purpose, by the way. A trained Tiger crew took months to produce. Infantry could be replaced next week. So when the shells came down, the grenaders scattered and the tanks stayed because the tanks were the valuable thing.
Except the valuable thing couldn’t move. A Sherman platoon showed up at 645 4M4s. And these were the 76 mm versions, the longbarreled high velocity guns, not the old 75s that Tiger crews had learned to ignore. And they did the smartest thing available, which was to not fight the lead Tiger at all. They ignored it.
They worked east through gaps in the bokeage that no Tiger could have used because a Sherman is lighter, narrower, and simpler. And the crude little suspension that made it ride like a cement mixer also let it go places the masterpiece couldn’t. They came out 300 m behind the German column.
Four Tigers facing the wrong way in a line on a road. A Tiger’s turret takes around a minute to come all the way round. The Shermans had roughly half that before anything could be brought to bear. At 650, all four fired, and not at the front plate, not even at the side. They shot the rearmost Tiger in the engine deck, where the armor is about 25 mm and lying nearly flat.
Three rounds went through, one found the fuel. It wasn’t a Hollywood explosion. It was worse in a quieter way. A hard orange bloom out of the engine grills, then thick black smoke, and a crew with maybe 15 seconds before the ammunition started cooking off. Five men got out. Two of them were on fire, and the Americans in the hedge, who had spent the previous half hour being shelled by these people, watched them roll in the dirt and didn’t shoot at them.
The other three tigers surrendered at 7:00. Hatches up, hands out, white undershirts tied to radio antennas. Call that cowardice if you like, but look at the arithmetic those crews were doing. Trapped in a line, armor behind them, artillery ranged in, no infantry, no route out, and one burning tank in front of them showing exactly how it ends.
From the first wheeling wire to three Tigers with their hatches open was 40 minutes. The lead tank got towed to a field workshop, and American engineers went over it like men who’d been waiting years for the chance. And the wire was still in there, wound so deep into the assembly that they needed cutting torches to get it out.
It had bitten through the rubber tire rings and scored the steel underneath. Repair estimate 12 hours. One torsion bar, one suspension arm, one bracket, two tire rings, all of it sitting in captured German stock. They fixed it and it never fought again because by then it needed the one thing Germany couldn’t send, which was fuel.
It sat in a depot south of Sandlow through August, waiting for tankers that never came. In October, American units took the depot and found it exactly where the Germans had parked it, and it went onto a flatbed bound for Abedine Proving Ground in Maryland to be taken apart and studied. Mallister’s company commander wrote him up for a Bronze Star.
The citation is a masterpiece of Army Pros, which is to say, it says almost nothing. innovative action resulting in the neutralization of enemy armor. It got approved in August and pinned on him in September in a muddy field outside Kain. Then he went home, used the GI Bill, finished an engineering degree, and went back to being an electrician anyway for 31 years, which tells you something about him.
Married in 1947, three kids, retired in 1976, died in 1989, and his obituary in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette gave his war one sentence. Bronze Star recipient, combat engineer, Normandy to the Elbay. Not one word about the wire. His own family didn’t have the details. The story traveled anyway because after action reports circulate and engineers talk.
By July it was in intelligence summaries. Engineer companies across the theater started carrying extra wire that had nothing to do with communications. Results were uneven and the uneven part is more honest than the legend. It worked on tigers and panthers when everything lined up which meant a narrow road, solid anchors, the right approach angle and surprise.
It failed against lighter tanks with simpler running gear. It failed in mud where the wire sagged before the tank arrived. And it failed the moment crews started looking for it, which they did. German bulletins in August carried warnings about cable traps and told commanders to walk a man ahead of the column in close terrain.
By September, men trying to set the trap were getting killed before they finished tying the knot. The window was June to August. 3 months across seven divisions worth of reports, something like 11 Tigers and Panthers were immobilized this way. Not destroyed, stopped. Which in armored warfare is very often the same thing with extra steps.
Because a stopped tank blocks a road, ties up a recovery crew, burns fuel that isn’t there, and sits in the open where somebody else can kill it at leisure. Here’s what I keep coming back to. The same story repeats across nearly everything Germany built late on. The Mi262 was 100 mph faster than anything the Allies had and needed.
Long concrete runways that bombers cratered nightly with engines that lasted about a dozen hours. The Panther’s sloped armor changed tank design permanently and its final drive tended to fail after 150 km. Brilliant machines. sophistication without sustainability, which is a slow way of losing.
The suspension is the cleanest example because there was nothing wrong with the idea. Interleved wheels really do distribute weight better. They really do give a smoother ride and better gunnery. They work beautifully when they’re clean, maintained, and running on reasonable ground. Which is to say, they needed peaceime conditions to be excellent, and war doesn’t supply those.
Normandy supplied mud and debris and wire. Russia supplied frozen mud and then liquid mud. Africa supplied sand. Every theater found the same gap and pushed something into it. The Sherman suspension was agricultural by comparison. Five wheels aside, no overlap. Coil springs bolted to the outside of the hull.
It rode badly. And a crew could change a road wheel in 20 minutes with the tools they already had in the dark in a hedge under shellfire. which is the only maintenance condition that ever actually matters. Modern tanks made their choice and it isn’t subtle. Six large road wheels, a side on an Abrams, seven on a Leopard 2.
No interle anywhere and suspension designed so a tired 19-year-old can fix it at night with cold hands and a limited toolkit. Mallister understood none of the strategic side of this and never claimed to. He was a man who’d spent years finding out where other people’s work fell apart, who had looked into a gap in some wheels 3 weeks earlier, and had a tradesman’s thought about it, and who had 90 seconds and a spool of wire on a morning when the alternative was watching his platoon get shelled into the dirt, and it very
nearly didn’t work. That’s the part the legend sands off. 6 in higher, and the tiger drives straight under it. rotten posts and they snap. Thinner wire and it parts on the first loop. A more cautious commander sends a man ahead on foot. Softer ground and the column takes a different road.
Change one variable and Malister dies in a hedro and nobody ever hears his name because failure doesn’t generate afteraction reports. It generates casualty lists. The wire is in a case at the infantry museum at Fort Moore with a typed card, a photograph of him in uniform, and a sketch of where the trap was tied.
The sunken road is paved now with houses along it and traffic going past all day and a stone marker somebody put up in 1994. It doesn’t name him. It says, “American soldiers halted enemy armor here with the date and the unit, which is how history usually files people. Nobody teaches the trick anymore. It survives in professional military education as a case study in something much harder to teach, which is looking at a machine and seeing what it actually is instead of what it’s supposed to be.
” Because the Tiger was supposed to be unstoppable. It was also just a collection of parts under load. Wheels, pins, tires, brackets, torsion bars.
