Germans Were Stunned When Americans Wasted Ammunition On Purpose
Somewhere in a canvas tent behind the American lines, late summer 1944. A captured German artillery officer sits across from an American interrogator. He is somewhere in his 30s. He has been fighting since 1940. He has served in France. Yes, he has served in Russia. He survived the retreat from the Volga and the meat grinder at Monte Cassino and he sits now in a folding chair in a field in Normandy with his uniform torn at the shoulder and dried blood on his collar.
And he has one question he cannot stop asking. Do the Americans fire at empty fields? Why do they fire at bushes? At mud? At road junctions where no German soldier is standing? Why do they fire at hedgerows they cleared with artillery the night before? Why do they, in the professional judgment of every officer he has served under for four years of the most brutal war in human history, waste ammunition on purpose? The American interrogator writes the question down.
He does not answer it because the answer is the reason the German officer is sitting in that tent. And it is the reason the war is about to end. This is a story about a question the German army never figured out. A question a hundred generals asked and a thousand captured colonels asked and in the closing months of the Second World War in the West, the entire professional artillery officer corps of the Wehrmacht asked in report after report and interrogation after interrogation >> >> and never once in the years that followed did they arrive at an answer
that satisfied them. It is a question that has an answer. The answer is one of the strangest, most counterintuitive, most quietly revolutionary military ideas of of the 20th century. It was invented by a man most Americans have never heard of. It was executed by teenagers from Ohio and Indiana and Kentucky who had no idea what they were part of.
It It was made possible by 6,000 trucks driven mostly by black men whose own country had told them they were not fit to fight. And it broke over the course of 10 months from June of 1944 to April of 1945. The finest army Europe had ever produced. It To understand it, we have to start at the hill where the German officer’s world began to come apart.
We have to start at Hill 192. Hill 192 Eastern Normandy the night of July 10th, 1944. The hill is not much to look at. It called a rise in the ground 3 miles east of a small French town called Saint-Lô covered in hedgerow and the kind of low thick woodland the Normans called bocage.
It If you were standing on top of it, you could see the road from Saint-Lô to Bayeux. It You could see the American lines to the north. It You could see the smoke of a war that had been going on since the 6th of June and you would understand immediately why every commander on both sides of the front line wanted this piece of ground. The Germans had held it since D-Day.

On the night of July 10th, they were still holding it. It The men holding it belonged to the 3rd Fallschirmjäger Division, the paratroopers of General Eugen Meindl’s 2nd Parachute Corps. It These were not conscripts. These the exhausted placements. It The Wehrmacht was scraping out of the training depots in the summer of 1944.
It These were paratroopers, veteran soldiers. Some of them had jumped into Crete in 1941. Some had fought at Monte Cassino. Some had come out of Russia. They knew what artillery sounded like. They knew what it felt like. They knew the rules. Yeah, at some point on that night, the rules stopped working.
It The second infantry division of the United States Army fired 13,000 artillery shells at Hill 192 in 24 hours. You say that number out loud. 13,000 shells. One American division. One hill. One day. It The shells came from eight battalions of American field artillery coordinated by a fire direction center miles behind the line targeting a piece of terrain that was maybe a mile across.
It Some of the shells were aimed at German positions. Most of them were not. Most of them were aimed at empty hedgerows. At road junctions where nobody was standing. At bushes. At mud. At the dark spaces between trees where a German soldier might be or might not be and where the Americans had decided it did not matter which.
It two To the paratroopers of the third Fallschirmjäger Division, this was not war. This was insanity. It To the sergeant counting shells in an ammunition dump behind the German line, this was theft. It Every one of those American rounds represented weeks of work in an American factory. Yes. Steel that had been forged, machined, packed, shipped across an ocean, driven across France, and thrown at a hilltop where it killed nothing.
A German artilleryman would have court-martialed a lieutenant who fired like that. A German artilleryman had been trained since the day he put on the uniform to believe that a shell that killed no one was a shell that had been wasted. Yes, the Americans on the far side of Hill 192 on the night of July 10th, 1944 had stopped believing that To understand how a modern army could fire 13,000 rounds at one hill in one day and why this was not madness but doctrine, we have to go back.
We have to go back to a number that average German artillery officer carried in his head like a wedding ring. The number that shaped every decision the Wehrmacht ever made about a cannon. The number that in 1944 on the road from Cherbourg the Americans had already broken. The number was 50. 50 rounds per gun.
That was roughly what a heavy German artillery battery on the Eastern Front could expect to have on hand for sustained combat by the end of 1941. 50 rounds. If the Russians came in waves, 50 rounds meant you had minutes. Minutes before your barrels went cold and your crew was holding a piece of machined steel that could do nothing to save them.
By 1944, the number had not improved. In many places it had gotten worse. The central fact of German artillery in the Second World War, the fact that shaped its doctrine and its training and its logistics and the mind of every officer who wore its uniform was scarcity. A German gun crew never had enough shells. A German battery never had enough guns.
A German regiment never had enough horses to pull the guns it did have. Read that last part again. Horses. In 1944, in the most technologically advanced army in Europe, the army that had built the V2 rocket and the jet fighter and the first assault rifle, the cream, the army that was fight fighting the Americans in France was moving its cannons with the same horsepower that had moved Napoleon’s cannons to Moscow 130 years earlier.

The German General Hans Eberbach, who commanded the Fifth Panzer Army in Normandy, left an inventory of what his artillery actually looked like when the Americans landed. His guns, he wrote, included pieces from every major power in Europe. French guns captured in 1940, dick, Czech guns captured in 1939, Russian guns captured on the Eastern Front.
Some of his pieces had been manufactured during the First World War. Dick, acquiring the correct ammunition for each type, matching shells to guns, maintaining the firing tables for every one of them was a logistical situation Eberbach described as a nightmare. That was what the Wehrmacht was firing back with in the summer of 1944.
The German artillery doctrine was not built by men who believed in abundance, it was built by men who treated every shell as if it might be the last shell. The doctrine, codified in the sacred German field manual called Truppenführung, was explicit. Degree, the manual, published in 1933, was still the Bible every German artillery officer had grown up on.
Yes, it stated that artillery was to be used with maximum mobility and maximum economy. Every shot must have a purp purpose. Counterbattery fire first to silence the enemy guns. Then, targets that were dangerous to the German infantry. Then, harassment of enemy command posts, a methodical system, a prioritized system, a system designed to make every round count.
Germans called this fire discipline. Fire discipline, it produced something remarkable. German artillery, when it fired, fired with extraordinary precision. Pre-plotted targets, to survey-based coordinates, careful bracketing. A German gun crew could put its first ranging shot inside a 50-m circle at 10 km away. Boom.
The Americans captured German firing tables and studied them with professional admiration. The accuracy was real. But, here is what the Germans had traded for that accuracy. Speed, flexibility. The German system required pre-plotted survey positions. >> >> A new target, a target that appeared suddenly on an unexpected axis, required 10 to 15 minutes of careful calculation before effective fire could begin.
10 minutes is an eternity in combat. 10 minutes is the difference between catching an attacking column in the open and watching it disappear into cover. And then, there was counter battery fire. German batteries, the American official histories note with what they called monotonous regularity, were reluctant to engage in artillery duels.
When an American counter battery fire arrived, German guns tended to go silent. This was not cowardice. It was arithmetic. Each If a German battery expended its precious ammunition trading rounds with an American battery, it would not have what it needed when the American infantry came. Better to hide. Better to conserve.
Better to wait for the moment when every shell had to count. All of this produced a German artillery officer who by 1944 had been drilled for his entire professional career in a single mental discipline, to waste nothing, aim everything, justify every round, and on the night of July 10th, 1944, that officer sat in a command post behind Hill 192, listening to the American guns roar on the far side of the hedgerow, and reached the only conclusion his doctrine had ever taught him to reach.
The Americans were incompetent. He was reading them through the only lens his training had given him, and his training was missing something, which something that was not a weapon, something that was not a tactic, something that was in the American system the entire point, which Across from Meindl’s paratroopers on the American side of the line, the man giving the orders was a 56-year-old major general from Nelson County, Kentucky, named Walter Melville Robertson.
Robertson had commanded the 2nd Infantry Division since May of 1942. He had brought his division across the beach at Omaha on the 7th of June, 1 day after the first wave. He had driven it 30 km south through the hedgerows, and on the 17th of June, 3 weeks before the shells started falling on Hill 100 92, he had stopped.
He had stopped because he had run out of supplies. He had stopped because his men were exhausted. He had stopped because in the bocage country of Normandy, every hedgerow was a wall, and every wall was a killing ground, and Hill 192, that unremarkable rise in the earth 3 miles east of Saint-Lô, was the observation point from which German artillerymen were watching every road and every field and every American movement for miles in every direction.
As long as the Germans held that hill Saint-Lô could not be taken. As long as Saint-Lô could not be taken, the American army in Normandy could not break out. As long as the American army in Normandy could not break out, the war in Europe would continue. For 24 days, Robertson planned.
For 24 For 24 days, his division sat under German observation and took what the German artillery gave them. On some days, it was mortar fire. On some days, it was air burst rounds. Some days, German aircraft strafed their lines. Officers were killed. Lieutenant Colonel Humphreys, commanding the first battalion of the 23rd infantry, was wounded on June 19th and had to be replaced by Lieutenant Colonel John M. Hightower.
Casualties came in ones and twos and tens. And Robertson planned. There had been an earlier attempt in mid-June. Elements of the 2nd Infantry Division had tried, in a series of piecemeal attacks between June 11th and June 16th, to take the hill by direct assault. The attempts had failed. Between 1,200 and 1,250 American casualties, killed, wounded, and missing, had come off that hill in 5 days of fighting for no ground.
Robertson had called the attempt off. And he had gone back to his tent and started over. The plan, when it was finished, was for a coordinated attack against the entire hill by two regiments of American infantry supported by eight full battalions of American field artillery. Not eight batteries. Eight battalions.
Something on the order of 96 guns, plus core artillery in reserve, plus air support from nearly 200 P-47 Thunderbolts loaded with bombs and rockets. The infantry was told to be at their line of departure at 4:00 in the morning on July 11th. The pre-attack bombardment was scheduled to open at 6:00 between 6:00 and 6:20 in the morning.
In 20 minutes, the American artillery would fire the opening act. Between 6:20 and the end of the day, the artillery would fire until Hill 192 was in American hands or the guns went dry. The guns did not go dry. By the time the sun set on July 11th, the 2nd Infantry Division had fired 20,000 artillery rounds onto Hill 192.
There is a detail in the American official histories that is so strange, so statistically bizarre, that the first time you read it, you assume it is a misprint. Over a period of days on Hill 192 and the ground around it, the 2nd Infantry Division fired up to 20 time on target missions per night.
Not 20 shells, not 20 barrages, 20 coordinated concentrations, each one involving multiple battalions of guns firing so that all the shells arrived at the target at the same instant. 20 of these per night. The commanding officer of the 29th Infantry Division’s artillery, Brigadier General William H. Sands, recorded in his division’s history that on a single day in mid-July, his guns fired 459 fire missions and expended more than 13,000 rounds in 24 hours.
When American photographic reconnaissance flew over Hill 192 in the days after it fell, what they saw was ground so eaten by craters that one officer in a report that survived into the official record, he said, “The hill looked from the air like a moth-eaten blanket.” To the German officer sitting in a command post reading that morning’s casualty reports, this was not war.
This was theft. Itch. This was a violation of everything he had ever been taught to believe about the profession of arms. He wrote his opinion down. His opinion has survived. In the interrogation reports collected by the intelligence staff of the American First Army, a German officer, unnamed, captured near Saint-Lô in the summer of 1944, he told his American interrogator that the Americans were the most professionally undisciplined artilleryman he had ever seen.
He said they fired without observation. He said they fired at empty fields. He said, “No German commander would ever have accepted such waste of ammunition.” He He believed he was describing a weakness in the American Army. He was, in fact, describing the single most important tactical innovation on the Western Front.
Cuz the Americans were not firing at empty fields because they had missed. The Americans were not firing at bushes because their observers could not see. The Americans were firing at empty fields because at some level above any individual battery, above any individual division, above any individual battlefield, the United States Army had made a decision.
The decision was written down. The document had a number. It was called Field Manual 6-20. Itch. It was published by the War Department. Itch. It described a category of artillery fire that had a formal name in American military doctrine, harassing and interdiction fire. Three words. A line item in the ammunition budget.
Which a published, authorized, deliberate tactic taught at Fort Sill in Oklahoma to every American artillery officer who had come through the school since the late 1930s. Which The idea was so simple that only an industrial nation could have believed in it. You do not need to kill the enemy with every round. You only need to break him. And you can break him with shells that never touch him.
Every round of American artillery fire on Hill 192 in July of 1944 was operating on a premise the German officer across the line did not have room for in his mind. The German premise was that a shell was a transaction. You spent it. You bought a casualty. If you did not buy a casualty, you had wasted the shell.
The American premise was different. The American premise was that a shell was a threat. And a threat did not need to hit anyone to do its work. A threat only needed to be in the air. A threat only needed to arrive at unpredictable intervals on unexpected coordinates at times when the German soldier on the receiving end had convinced himself he was safe.
Multiply that shell by 20,000. Multiply those 20,000 by every hill in Normandy. Multiply Normandy by every road junction and every crossroads and every assembly area from Cherbourg to the Rhine. That is what the German officer was watching from his command post on the night of July 10th, 1944. He did not see it. He could not see it.
The doctrine he had been trained in did not have a category for it. And because he could not see it, he wrote in his report that the Americans were amateurs, that their fire was ineffective, that any competent officer could see they did not know what they were doing. He was not lying. Yes, he was doing his best with the concepts his professional training had put in his head.
And those concepts on the night of July 10th, 1944, had just been rendered obsolete by an American colonel sitting behind a fire direction grid in a canvas tent in a Norman field calmly ordering another concentration on a road junction where no one was standing. Yes, the German officer would spend the next 10 months of the war learning what that meant.
Most of the German army would never figure it out. But the story of how a professional army of 40-year-old Prussian gunners was defeated by teenage American factory boys firing at empty fields is not the story of guns. Yes, it is the story of something else. Something the Germans did not have. Yes, something the Germans could not build.
Something moving in the late summer of 1944 on the roads of Western France in a rivers of steel that stretched from the Norman coast all the way to the German border. And it was driven, loaded, and maintained by men whom the American army itself, in a segregated country in a segregated war, >> >> had officially declared unfit to fight.
6:20 in the morning. Yes, July 11, 1944. Yes, the mist is still lying in the low fields around Hill 192. The temperature is cool. Somewhere in the wet grass at the line of departure, the riflemen of the first battalion of the 38th infantry regiment are flat waiting for a whistle. They have been awake since 2:00 in the morning. They have not eaten.
400 yd in front of them is a hedgerow and behind the hedgerow are German paratroopers who have been dug in for a month and who have already caused 1,200 American casualties on this same hill in a failed attempt 3 weeks earlier. 6:00 exactly, the sky opens. 96 American guns from a single fire direction center behind the American lines begin firing on Hill 192.
Not sequentially, not in rolling waves, all at once. And they keep firing. Yes, for 20 minutes without the shells arrive on the German positions at a rate no one in the wet grass has ever heard before and no one that will forget for the rest of his life. Yet, the men on the line do not know it, but what they are listening to is a system.
Which, a system that took the United States Army 20 years to build, that was invented by a colonel most Americans have never heard of and that in the summer of 1,000 for which 944 has just become the most efficient killing mechanism ever devised by a human military organization. At 6:20, the whistles blow. The riflemen get up. They walk toward the hedgerow.
And the artillery in the moment their boots leave the ground lifts and moves forward walking ahead of them at a pace set by their own commanding officer dropping shells on the ground they are about to occupy until moments before they occupy it. By 1:30 in the afternoon, Hill 192 is in American hands. Yes, the paratroopers of the third Fallschirmjäger Division, the men who had jumped into Crete and fought at Monte Cassino and survived the Eastern Front are dead in their holes or running south towards Saint-Lô and the ground
they held for a month has been taken in 7 hours. If you are a German commando reading the after-action report of that day, you have to stop and understand what has just happened because it violates everything you have been trained to believe about the profession of arms. And to understand [snorts] it, you have to understand a colonel named Carlos Brewer.
Carlos Brewer was born in Kentucky in 1890. He was a career artilleryman. He was not as famous. He never commanded a division. Who He never made general during the fighting years of the Second World War. And in the early 1930s at the United States Army Field Artillery School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Carlos Brewer, working with a small team of officers, most of whose names have been forgotten by everyone except the professional historians of American artillery, redesigned the way an army fires its guns.
Before Brewer, artillery in every army in the world worked the same way. Each battery, which is to say each cluster of four or six guns, calculated its own firing solutions, aimed at its own targets, and fired on its own timetable. If you wanted a coordinated bombardment involving multiple batteries, someone had to work out the geometry by hand, telephone the coordinates to each battery, wait while each battery calculated its own solution, and then hope the whole thing came together.
Brewer’s insight was that this was the wrong way to do it. Brewer proposed that the calculations be done in a central place. Yes. One center receiving one call from one forward observer, doing one calculation, and then transmitting firing orders simultaneously to every battery in range. Not working alone. All of them working as a single instrument.
He called it the fire direction center. It was, in the way of all revolutionary ideas, so obvious in retrospect that most army officers of the 1930s could not immediately see why it mattered. But when it was combined with a second innovation, pre-computed firing tables that allowed adjustments for wind, humidity, temperature, barrel wear, and the specific characteristics of every individual shell in every individual battery, >> >> what emerged was something no other army in the world could match.
An American battery in Normandy receiving a fire mission from a forward observer could put steel on a map reference in under 3 minutes. A German battery working from pre-plotted survey positions and calculating by hand needed 10 to 15 minutes for the same target if that target had not been anticipated in advance. 3 minutes versus 15 minutes.
Think about what that means on a battlefield. A German platoon breaks cover to counterattack. In 3 minutes, they are dead. >> >> In 15 minutes, they are back in cover, drinking water, deciding to try again. But Brewer’s system did something else, something even more consequential. Because the fire direction center could talk to every battery in range, it could time their shells to arrive at the target at the same instant, not sequentially, simultaneously.
36 guns firing at slightly different moments from slightly different positions at slightly different ranges, and every single shell arriving at the target within the same second. The Americans called it time on target. For a German soldier caught in the open by a time on target concentration, there was no warning shell.
There was no first round to tell him to dive for cover. There was no adjusting fire. Yes, there was silence and then there was, in a single instant, the entire concentration of a full battalion or a full division’s artillery landing on top of him. He could not run. He could not dig. He could not react. By the time you understood you were under fire, you were already dead.
And the 2nd Infantry Division, on some nights in July of 1944, fired up to 20 of these time on target concentrations onto Hill 192 in a single evening. Yeah, 20 coordinated instantaneous mass concentrations, most of them at points on the map where the American commanders knew no German soldier was standing. Yeah, they fired them because Carlos Brewer’s system made them cheap.
They They fired them because the doctrine written into Field Manual 620 told them to fire them. Yeah, they fired them because an American artillery colonel had decided, sitting in a canvas tent behind the front line, that a German paratrooper who did not sleep tonight was a German paratrooper who would fight badly tomorrow.
And the cost of a shell was less than the cost of an American infantryman’s life at dawn. But Carlos Brewer’s system needed eyes. Yeah, it needed someone to see the German battery when it fired. It needed someone to see the German column when it moved. And in the summer of 1944, the eyes of the American artillery arm did not belong to men on the ground.
They be- belonged to a small yellow airplane called the Piper L-4 Grasshopper. The Grasshopper was a two-seat single-engine aircraft, unarmed, unarmored, flying at 90 miles an hour at 1,000 ft above the front line. In it sat two men. One flew, the other worked the radio. And when he saw a German column on a road or the muzzle flash of a German battery in a tree line or the movement of a German platoon crossing an open field, he called it in.
Coordinates, description, direction of movement. Behind the American lines, a battery of six 155-mm howitzers received his call. 3 minutes later, the shells arrived. By the middle of 1944, American forward observers in Piper Cubs were conducting the overwhelming majority of all artillery adjustment missions in the European theater.
A German officer who saw a Grasshopper circling knew, in the words of the American Liaison Aviation Histories, that a lethal barrage would break over his head within minutes. Daylight movement for the German army in Normandy became, in the documented military phrase, problematic, which is a polite word for suicidal.
The Grasshoppers were not fast. They were not powerful. A German fighter aircraft could have shot them out of the sky in seconds. But by the summer of 1944, the German fighter force in the west had been so thoroughly ground down by American and British air power that there were no German fighters to send. But the Grasshoppers flew unmolested, and they saw everything.
There was a man watching all of this happen who understood better than almost anyone what it meant. His name was Ernest Taylor Pyle. Which He was 44 years old in the summer of 1944, a slight prematurely gray Indiana-born newspaperman who had been writing dispatches from the front lines of the American war since 1942.
He had been in North Africa. He had been in Sicily. He had been in Italy. Which He had slept in foxholes with the infantry and eaten from mess kits with the artillery. And he had written what he saw in the plainest English any American newspaperman ever wrote. Millions of American families read Ernie Pyle in the morning paper.
Which If you had a son in the war, you read Pyle to understand what your son’s life was actually like. He was the closest thing the American home front had to a witness. Which In a dispatch he wrote in 1943, published in newspapers across the United States, Pyle recorded a conversation with an American artillery officer that captured the entire logic of the American way of war in a single sentence.
Which The officer told Pyle that the Americans had more guns than they knew what to do with. Pyle wrote it down. He wrote that every gun in a sector could be centered to fire on one spot. He wrote that veteran German soldiers, when captured, said they had never been through anything like it. More guns than we know what to do with. Sit with that sentence for a moment.
Which The Wehrmacht in the summer of 1944 was fighting on three fronts. Its artillery officers were counting shells in 50s. Which Its formations in Normandy included, as General Eberbach recorded, guns captured from four different European countries. Some manufactured before the First World War and an American officer in an interview with an American reporter was saying casually that his side had more guns than they could figure out how to use.
Which the number that made that sentence possible was buried in the production reports of the United States War Department. In the single month of May 1,942 yes, before the Americans had even reached North Africa. Dick, American factories produced 567,000 rounds of 155 mm artillery ammunition. One month, one caliber, nearly 600,000 shells.
That was not the arsenal of a nation running out of ammunition. That was the arsenal of a nation for whom ammunition had ceased to be a limiting factor. And 2 weeks after the fall of Hill 192, that arsenal was about to be aimed at a single German division on a road outside a French town called Saint-Lô. The date was July 25th, 1944.
The operation was called Cobra. Well, the commander of the German division about to be hit was named Fritz Bayerlein. Bayerlein was 45 years old in July of 1944. He had spent his career at the elbow of Erwin Rommel. He’d been Rommel’s chief of staff in North Africa watching the Desert Fox humiliate the British in Libya and Egypt.
He had commanded the Third Panzer Division on the Eastern Front and in January of 1944, he had been given command of the most lavishly equipped armored division the German army fielded in the entire war. They called it Panzer Lehr. Lehr means teaching. Yeah. The division had been assembled from the demonstration troops of the German armor school.
The men who taught new tank crews how to fight, and it had been sent to France to break the invasion when it came. When the Americans landed at Omaha Beach on June 6th, Hans von Ahlfen was stationed near Chartres, roughly 150 miles from the coast, with almost 15,000 men and over 200 tanks and assault guns. Ish.
It was von Ahlfen’s division, and it was the finest armored formation Germany still possessed in the west. On the morning of July 25th, 1944, after weeks of hard fighting in the bocage, von Ahlfen’s division was dug in along the road from Periers to Saint-Lô, blocking the American advance out of the hedgerow country. At 9:40 in the morning, the first American aircraft appeared overhead.
There were 1,500 heavy bombers, B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators of the American Strategic Air Forces, followed by hundreds of medium bombers and hundreds of fighter bombers. Nearly 2,500 American aircraft in total, dropping something on the order of 4,000 tons of bombs on an area a few miles across.
von Ahlfen was in his command post when it began. He survived. Most of his division did not. After the war and his manuscript for the American Army’s Historical Division, von Ahlfen wrote down what he had seen. He wrote it in German, and the American historians translated it, and it has been quoted by every serious historian of the Normandy campaign for the last 80 years.
It reads in translation like this: Bombs came as if on a conveyor belt, back and forth the carpets were laid. Artillery positions were wiped out. Tanks overturned and buried. Infantry positions flattened. All roads and tracks destroyed. By midday, the entire area resembled a Mondlandschaft, a moonscape with bomb craters touching rim to rim.
All signal communications had been cut and no command was possible. The shock of effect on the troops was indescribable. Several of my men went mad and rushed round in the open until they were cut down by splinters. Read that one more time. These were not raw recruits. These were the demonstration troops of the German armor school. These were the instructors who taught other men how to fight tanks. And within a few hours on the morning of July 25th, 1944, they were running in the open under an American aerial bombardment because their minds had come apart.
Bayerlein estimated that 70% of his division was dead, wounded, crazed, or numbed by the end of that day. And 70% the finest armored division in the German army in the west gone in a morning. And the bombers were only the first act. Simultaneously with the air strike, American artillery coordinated from fire direction centers behind the lines poured what Bayerlein described as drum fire onto his positions.
Every gun the Americans could bring to bear, every shell they could throw, every principle Colonel Carlos Brewer had written down at Fort Sill 15 years earlier being executed in real time on the road to Saint-Lô against the pride of the German Panzer arm. By nightfall, the American front had ruptured. The breakout had begun.
Within days, American armored columns were pouring into open country, and the German army in France was starting the long, bloody retreat that would end at the Rhine. Pic. But, the retreat and the pursuit that followed brought the Americans a new problem. The war moved faster than the supplies. Pic. Every mile the American armies advanced was another mile that ammunition, fuel, and food had to be trucked from the beaches at Cherbourg to the front line. Twis.
By the middle of August, the front line was hundreds of miles away. Pic. The trucks were not going to catch up on their own. Pic. The French rail system had been so thoroughly bombed by American aircraft in the weeks before D-Day that most of it was unusable. There were no trains. Twoway.
There were only the roads and the trucks and the men who drove them. Four. On August 25th, 1944, the American army improvised the largest emergency logistics operation in the history of warfare up to that time. They called it the Red Ball Express. It was, in the plainest terms, a highway. Eight. Dedicated route from the supply dumps near Cherbourg to the forward supply points behind the American front.
Civilian traffic was forbidden. Duh. Military police guarded the intersections. Roads themselves were marked with red circles at every junction. And the trucks that ran on them were painted with the same red mark. There were 6,000 trucks. Orch. Most of them were the 2 and 1/2 ton GMC cargo trucks, the deuce and 1/2, the vehicle that would become the workhorse of the American army for the next 20 years.
They ran day and night >> >> in two-man teams on a 54-hour round trip. At night, they They without headlights. Pic. At its peak, the Red Ball Express delivered 12,500 tons of supplies per day. For 83 days from August 25th until November 16th, 1944, the Red Ball Express delivered 412,193 tons of ammunition, gasoline, food, and spare parts to the 28 American divisions fighting in France, Belgium, and on the German border.
Compare that to what the Germans were doing. Yeah. In the summer of 1944, the Wehrmacht in the west still relied for a significant portion of its artillery ammunition supply on horse-drawn transport. Kick. Not in 1918. Yeah. In 1944, some German infantry formations in the Ardennes, when the winter came, would have more horses than they had men.
A horse can pull about a ton of cargo. A horse needs to eat. A horse moves at a walking pace. A horse in the wet Norman roads of August 1944 was a beautiful animal and a devastating liability. Cuz Cuz on the other side of the front line, the Americans had 6,000 engines. And those engines never stopped. And then, there is the detail that most Americans, when they hear the story of the Red Ball Express, do not know.
75% of the men who drove those trucks were black. The United States Army in 1944 was a segregated army. It was the army of a segregated country. And the official position of the American military establishment, held with a stubbornness that had barely softened since the First World War, was that African American soldiers were not suited to combat roles.
They were therefore routinely assigned to the mess hall, to the laundry, to the motor pool. They loaded, they cooked, drove. Ish. 23,000 American drivers and cargo loaders worked the Red Ball Express in its 83 days of operation. 17,000 of them were black men who had been told by their own government that they were not good enough to carry a rifle.
They drove without headlights through French villages at night. They drove through German air attacks. They drove for 54 hours at a time with one break. They drove until the engines wore out and then they fixed the engines with parts they carried in the back of the trucks. And they drove more. One of them was named Charles H. Johnson. He was a corporal in the 783rd Military Police Battalion and there is a photograph of him in the National Archives taken in the fall of 1944 waving a Red Ball convoy through a French crossroads. He’s doing the job
the American Army told him was the only job he was fit for. And the job he is doing is what allows George Patton 400 miles ahead of him to keep firing. On July 15th, 1944, two days before an Allied fighter-bomber caught his staff car on a Normandy road and ended his active career, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel sat down and wrote a report to his superiors that contained a sentence he never expected to write in his career as a professional soldier.
He wrote that the enemy had a great superiority in artillery. He wrote that the enemy had an outstandingly large supply of ammunition. The Desert Fox, ich, the commander who had humiliated the British in Libya, ich, the soldier whom Hitler had personally decorated, the general who had built the Afrika Korps out of nothing, ich, he had understood, in his last weeks of active command, what the German officer at Hill 192 had not been able to understand.
The Americans were not amateurs. The Americans were not undisciplined. Krieg, the Americans were doing something the German army could not do. Rommel understood it. His countrymen did not. And by the winter of 1944, in a snow-covered forest in Belgium, on a night when the German army in the west would launch its last great offensive of the war, they were about to learn what happened when the American river of steel was allowed to run at full flood, and a new kind of shell, one that most German soldiers had never heard of,
began exploding not on the ground where they were dug in, but in the air above their heads. Krieg, December 31st, 1944, ich, somewhere on the Belgian-German frontier, there is a photograph in the National Archives from that day. Ich, it shows three American gunners standing next to a 155-mm artillery shell. The shell is nearly 4 ft tall.
It weighs 95 lb. Ich, it has been machined in a factory in the United States, shipped across the Atlantic Ocean, and driven across France by a truck that was probably part of the Red Ball Express, and delivered to the position of Battery C, 28th Field Artillery Battalion, 8th Infantry Division. Ich, the three gunners are grinning at the camera.
Someone has painted a message on the side of the shell in white paint. It reads, “For Adolf, an unhappy New Year.” Yes, they are about to fire that shell into Germany. And the reason they are grinning, the reason they have the time and the confidence and the material abundance to write jokes on their ammunition is that they know when they pull the lanyard, the next shell will arrive by truck before the barrel is cool.
That is not an army calculating whether to fire. If that is an army in which a young man from Ohio can lean against a piece of ordnance worth more than his father earned in a year, write graffiti on it in white paint, and laugh for a photographer while the men who built it work another shift in another factory 5,000 mi away.
Yes, 2 weeks earlier on December 16th, 1944, the war on the Western Front had changed. >> >> Before dawn on that morning in the freezing fog of the Belgian Ardennes, the German army launched the last great offensive of its existence. 30 divisions, a quarter of a million men, hundreds of tanks. Right, the plan was to drive west, split the American and British armies, and capture the port of Antwerp.
Yes, it was made possible by weather so bad that Allied aircraft could not fly, terrain so wooded that Allied reconnaissance had missed the build-up, and surprise so total that when the German assault guns opened fire in the darkness, yes, the American units in front of them were still asleep. Before the first 3 days, the American front was a disaster.
Whole regiments were surrounded. Whole divisions were shattered. One, the 106th Infantry Division lost most of two regiments to encirclement. Yes, the paratroopers of the 101st Airborne were rushed into a Belgian crossroads town >> >> called Bastogne and told to hold it. And by December 21st, they were surrounded. But, by the time the Ardennes Offensive began, the American Army had a weapon the German commanders in front of them did not know existed, the variable time fuse, proximity fuse, the VT fuse.
It had been quietly authorized for use against German ground targets weeks before the offensive, and shells fitted with it had already been shipped across the Atlantic and distributed to American batteries across the front. The German commanders had no idea. You have to understand what this was. A conventional artillery shell explodes when it hits something.
If it hits the ground, most of the blast goes up and out into the air, where it does not kill anyone. It’s a soldier flat in a foxhole in a well-dug position had a real chance of surviving even a direct hit near his hole. The proximity fuse changed that. It was a miniature Doppler radar built into the nose of the shell.
As the shell fell toward the ground, it emitted a continuous radio signal. When that signal bounced back from the ground with the right change in frequency, indicating the shell was roughly 50 to 70 ft above the surface, the fuse fired. The shell exploded above the foxhole instead of in it. Shrapnel rained straight down.
Being flat in a foxhole was not cover. Being under a tree was not cover. The The only thing that stopped the shrapnel was solid overhead protection, timber, sandbags, concrete, and most German positions in the Ardennes in December of 1944 did not have solid overhead protection because the ground was frozen, and men had been dug in for weeks with nothing but what they could carry.
Hitch, the proximity fuse had been the most closely guarded technological secret of the American war effort, more tightly protected than radar. It had been forbidden for use over land for 2 years. The American Army Air Forces were terrified that if a single unexploded fuse was recovered by the Germans, it would be reverse engineered into anti-aircraft ammunition that would devastate the American bomber fleets flying over the Reich.
Heat, for 2 years an American shell that could have killed a man in a foxhole was fired only over water where the fuses could not be recovered. Four, 2 years American infantrymen died charging German positions that a proximity fuse could have suppressed. Hitch, the historians who study this decision have argued about it for 80 years and reasonable men can disagree about whether the caution was worth the cost.
Caution ended in the fall of 1944 and 10 days after the Ardennes Offensive began in a river valley in Luxembourg near the German border, the fuses went to work. The date was December 25th, 1944. Christmas Day. Yes, the place was the Sauer River near the town of Echternach. Guns, the German 212th Volksgrenadier Division was attempting to cross the river in the darkness moving reinforcements toward the shrinking western tip of the German offensive.
They were exposed. They were in the open on the bank of a frozen river and they were within range of the guns of the American Third Army whose commander, Lieutenant General George Smith Patton Jr., had been driving his divisions north through blizzard conditions since December 20th to relieve the encircled paratroopers at Bastogne, Yeah, Patton on that Christmas night ordered a battalion concentration fired on the German troops at the river.
The shells were fitted with the new fuse. They wigged out. They arrived over the German column at 50 ft. They exploded. Patton wrote a letter about it a few days later. He addressed it to Major General Levin H. Campbell Jr., the chief of the United States Army Ordnance Department, the man responsible for the material his soldiers fought with.
The letter has been quoted in every serious history of American artillery in the Second World War because it is the moment when the commander of one of the most powerful armies in history sat down and wrote a single sentence that told the American Ordnance Branch what it had built. The new shell with the funny fuse is devastating.
We caught a German battalion which was trying to get across the Sauer River with a battalion concentration and killed by actual count 702. I think that when all armies get this shell, we will have to devise some new method of warfare. I am glad that you all thought of it first. 702 dead. One battalion of Americans, one concentration of shells, one night for on the far side of a frozen river in Luxembourg on Christmas of 1944.
Patton was not exaggerating. In the days that followed, the effect on German morale across the Ardennes front was catastrophic. American intelligence officers reading intercepted German radio traffic and interrogating prisoners found that German soldiers were refusing orders to leave their bunkers during artillery bombardments.
German commanders were offering rewards to soldiers who could recover a surviving fuse so it could be sent back to Germany for study. None ever was. The fuse was too small, too obscure, too well-built. It exploded with the shell. There was nothing to recover. War. By the 3rd week of January 1945, the German offensive in the Ardennes had failed. H.
The Wehrmacht had lost roughly 100,000 men, and the divisions Hitler had gathered for one last great blow in the west were destroyed. Balans Panzer Lehr had been thrown into the offensive as part of the XLVI Panzer Corps. It had not achieved its objectives, and Bayerlein, H. After the failure of the offensive, he was relieved of division command. Yes.
He would spend February and March of 1945 leading a corps in the collapsing western defenses of the Reich. He would surrender to the Americans in the Ruhr pocket in April. His war, the war of the German army in the west, had 2 months to run. H. The last great obstacle in front of the American armies was the Rhine. H. For 140 years, since the armies of Napoleon had crossed it in the early 1800s, no foreign army had crossed the Rhine by force.
The Germans had built their defensive strategy around it. H. It was the moat around the German heartland, and every senior German commander in the west, from Field Marshal Model down, believed that even a broken Wehrmacht could bleed the allies white in the crossing. >> >> The American 9th Army, commanded by Lieutenant General William Hood Simpson, was assigned to the northern crossing.
Simpson was 56 years old. He was a Texan. He was tall and gaunt and shaven-headed. Eisenhower rated him among the finest professional soldiers under his command, though Simpson never achieved the public fame of Patton or Bradley. Ish. His crossing was scheduled for the night of March 23rd, 1945. Ich.
At his disposal, and at the disposal of Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery’s British and Canadian troops fighting alongside him, was every artillery piece the allies could bring to bear. Tick. When the guns were counted, the number came to roughly 4,000. 4,000 guns. At dusk on March 23rd, they opened fire. On the flat western bank of the Rhine, the muzzle flashes were continuous.
Orch. American, British, and Canadian gunners fired over 65,000 rounds into the German positions on the eastern bank in the opening bombardment alone. Ich. At its peak, the guns were firing roughly 1,000 rounds per minute. Ich. The infantry of the American 30th Infantry Division went into their assault boats expecting the worst river crossing of the war. A.
They had been briefed to expect casualties in the thousands. They had rehearsed for weeks. Every man in every boat had made his peace with the odds. They landed on the eastern bank. They found almost nothing. Boom. The Germans on the far side had been so comprehensively shattered by the bombardment that the American assault battalions came ashore against negligible resistance.
Within 4 days, the Ninth Army had established a bridgehead 35 miles wide and 20 miles deep. The Rhine, the wall of German strategy, was gone. Not because American infantry had fought harder than German infantry. Not because American tanks had outfought a German tanks. Tick. American infantry and German infantry had been fighting to a bloody draw for 11 months.
American tanks had, in almost every direct comparison, been outclassed by German armor since 1943. Then Rhine was gone because the Americans had put 65,000 artillery rounds onto the far bank before the first man stepped into a boat. 6 weeks later the war in Europe was over. Check. Adolf Hitler committed suicide in his bunker in Berlin on April 30th, 1945.
Croc. The German government surrendered unconditionally on May 7th. H. Fritz Bayerlein, who had watched Lehr die under American artillery on the road to Saint-Lô the previous July, spent the next 2 years as a prisoner of war of the United States Army. And it was during those 2 years that the most important reckoning of the war took place. Not on any battlefield.
In a series of interrogation rooms and lecture halls at Camp King in Oberursel, Germany. Run by the American Army’s historical division. Yeah. The American Army in the aftermath of victory did something unprecedented in the history of warfare. Brought together the surviving senior officers of the defeated Wehrmacht and it asked them to write.
To write everything. Yes. To write down every campaign they had fought, every decision they had made, every mistake they had watched their army commit. The Americans gave them paper. Gave them typewriters, gave them access to captured German records, and they said “Tell us what happened.” The result was a body of documents called the Foreign Military Studies.
Hundreds of manuscripts. Thousands of pages. B. The interrogated included field marshals and colonel generals, >> >> and the men who had commanded corps and armies from the Volga to the Rhine. Fritz Bayerlein wrote his account of the destruction of Panzer Lehr. The manuscript was cataloged as MS and 902. General Hasso von Manteuffel, who had commanded the Fifth Panzer Army in the Ardennes Offensive, wrote a detailed account of the winter campaign and what had gone wrong with it.
Colonel-General Franz Halder, who had been Hitler’s Chief of the General Staff in the early years of the war, wrote about the strategic decisions that had brought Germany to ruin. Even General Kurt Meyer, the young Waffen SS commander who had led the 12th SS Panzer Division against the Canadians in Normandy, contributed manuscripts describing his operations. They wrote in German.
American translators translated. American historians filed the manuscripts, cross-indexed them, argued about them, and slowly built the largest single body of primary source testimony about a lost war that any victorious army has ever collected from a defeated one. And in that testimony, in interrogation after interrogation, in manuscript after manuscript, a single theme returns.
For the Germans asked to explain their defeat, did not talk about American infantry. Did not talk about American tanks. They did not talk about American generals. They talked about American artillery. They talked about it with the specific bewilderment of professional soldiers who had watched something they did not have a category for.
They talked about the volume of American fire. They talked about its speed. They talked about its ability to arrive without warning. And >> >> and they talked, in the words that recurred most often, across the largest number of separate accounts, about what they perceived as the apparent indifference of American commanders to the ammunition they were expending.
They still, in 1946, in 1947, in interrogation rooms in Bavaria, did not understand it. >> >> They knew they had lost to it. Just did not understand what it had been. The answer The answers the Germans could not see because their doctrine did not have room for it was that the Americans had been running a different arithmetic.
The German arithmetic asked, “What did this shell kill?” American arithmetic asked, “What did this shell prevent?” Prevention does not require a target. Prevention only requires presence. Gish. A shell that lands on an empty road junction at 2:00 in the morning has still done work because the German supply column that was going to move through that junction tonight now does not move or moves late or moves by a longer route >> >> or arrives at the front with a driver who has not slept in 36 hours. Gish. A
shell that lands on a on an empty field has still done work because the German infantry company that was going to form up in that field for a dawn counterattack now cannot form up in that field and the counterattack does not happen and the American position holds. Multiply that shell by 20,000. Multiply those junctions by hundreds.
Multiply those nights by months. The Germans were not being defeated by American individual rounds. Yes, the Germans were being defeated by the American aggregate and the American aggregate was possible only because in the spring of 1942, American factories had produced 567,000 rounds of one caliber of artillery ammunition in a single month and because in the summer of 1,944, 6,000 trucks, driven mostly by black men whose country would not let them fight, had moved 412,000 tons of that ammunition across France.
And because a colonel named Carlos Brewer had 15 years earlier at Fort Sill redesigned the way an army coordinated its guns. The Germans could not have done any of this if they had wanted to. They did not have the shells. They did not have the trucks. They did not have the factories. They did not have the fire direction centers or the proximity fuses or the grasshoppers.
They did not have the roads. They did not have the drivers. And because they did not have these things, their doctrine had been built around a premise of scarcity, and their officers had to look at American abundance and call it incompetence because their minds had no other category to put it in. The Americans were not wasteful. The Americans were not careless.
The Americans had, at the level of doctrine, understood what industrial war actually was. And then, they had built an army that could fight it. That is the story that the German officers were still trying to write down in 1,947, still trying to explain to themselves, still trying to make sense of. Fritz Erich von Manstein spent 2 years in an American prison camp reconstructing on paper the destruction of the finest division he ever commanded.
Hasso von Manteuffel filled hundreds of pages explaining what had gone wrong in the Ardennes. And a small army of American historians took those manuscripts and filed them away in the National Archives, where they sit to this day waiting for anyone who wants to understand how a war was won. The cross, the commander who defeated the byline was not George Patton.
The commander who defeated byline was not Omar Bradley. Chicken, the commander who defeated byline was not any officer whose name appears in the American command structure. Chicken, the commander who defeated byline was in a sense every machinist in every American factory who cast a shell casing in the spring of 1944.
Every railroad engineer who carried the shell to docks. Every longshoreman who loaded it onto a liberty ship. Every sailor who took it across the Atlantic. Every black truck driver who carried it 300 miles across France in the back of a deuce and a half. Every artillery officer who called down the fire mission.
Every gunner who pulled the lanyard. None of them individually knew what they were part of. Together, they were the largest coordinated act of industrial power in the history of human warfare. That is the American story of the Second World War in the West. Not the story of the men in the foxholes, though the men in the foxholes deserve every honor a nation can give them.
Not the story of the generals, though some of them earned their reputations. Yet, the story of the Second World War in the West is the story of a country that decided at the level of doctrine, at the level of production, at the level of the roads it built and the trucks it drove and the men it put behind the wheels of those trucks that ammunition was a river, not a reservoir.
And that a soldier’s life was worth every shell it took to save him. Two, the German gunners who died on Hill 192 and in the moonscape at Saint-Lô and in the killing ground on on Sauer River on Christmas of 1,944 were most of them brave men. Some of them were veterans of Crete and Cassino and the Eastern Front.
Some of them were professionals whose skill would be studied and admired by American artillerymen for the rest of the 20th century. They lost in the end to a different idea of what an army could be. An idea that took a machinist in a factory in Pennsylvania, a truck driver in the Third Army rear area, a colonel at Fort Sill, and a battery commander in Belgium writing jokes on a shell for Adolf Hitler on New Year’s Eve of 1,944 and made [snorts] them all together part of a single instrument. That instrument
won the war and most of the men who built it never knew what they had done. If you are watching this and your father or your grandfather or your uncles served in the American field artillery in the Second World War, in the Second Infantry Division or the 29th or the Eighth Infantry Division or in one of Patton’s field artillery battalions in the Third Army or in any of the units that put steel on German positions between June of 1,000 944 and May of 1,000 945, they were part of what you have just heard. Or they were part of the largest
coordinated act of industrial firepower any nation has ever put in the field. They did not know it. They came home. They went to work. They raised families. Most of them did not talk about it. >> >> And the men who could have explained what they had been part of are almost all gone now. What remains is the record.

They deserve to be remembered by
name, by unit, and by the work they did with the river of steel their country put into their hands. That is the story.
