A 155mm Gun Drove Up to Brest’s Bunkers and Fired Point-Blank Into 7 Feet of Concrete
On a grey morning in September 1944, a German paratrooper crouched inside a concrete strongpoint on the western edge of Brest and felt the whole wall jump when the first heavy shell struck its face. He had been told this ground would hold for months. The port behind him had been declared a fortress and the order that came with that word was to fight to the last grenade.
The men in the bunkers around him belonged to one of the best formations Germany still had left. What none of them had been told was how fast 7 ft of reinforced concrete comes apart when the gun firing at it drives up close and puts a shell straight into the wall. The gun that helped do that was American and it was the only one of its kind anywhere in the theater that year.
By the end of the siege, the harbor they were holding would be a ruin. 37,000 of them would be prisoners and their commander would hand over a fortress he had promised to defend. And there is one strange thing waiting at the center of it. The German record of the siege, the war diaries and the prisoner reports and the studies the survivors wrote afterward never names that gun once.
So, we are going to let the concrete and the surrender do the talking and we are going to be honest about the silence in the middle. To understand why the men in those bunkers were so sure of themselves, you have to start with the man who commanded them. His name was Hermann Bernhard Ramcke. By the summer of 1944, he was one of the most experienced fortress and airborne officers in the German army.
He had jumped into Crete in 1941 when German paratroopers seized a whole island from the air. He had fought in North Africa alongside the Africa Corps leading a paratrooper brigade across the desert. He was a general of the parachute troops and when Germany needed a hard man to hold a hard place, his was a name that came up.
On the 11th of August, 1944, he was made commandant of fortress Brest. He handed off command of his own division, the second parachute division, to a colonel named Hans Kroh and he took the whole garrison under his hand. That garrison was large. Counts run between 35,000 and 40,000 men drawn from the army, the air force, and the navy.
At its core stood the second parachute division backed by the 343rd infantry division and parts of the 266th. These were not second-rate troops filling out a line. The paratroopers in particular were among the most stubborn defensive fighters of the war. Ramcke’s order to them was plain. Brest was to be held to the last cartridge and if it could not be held, it was to be left useless to the enemy.

He meant both halves of that order and his men believed him. The ground they were defending was built for exactly this kind of fight. Brest is an old naval port on the far western tip of France and it had been fortified for centuries. Some of the works were German, poured in concrete during the occupation. Others were far older.
On the western approach stood Fort Montbarey, built during the reign of Louis the XVI in the 1780s, with walls 30 ft high and 40 ft ringed by a dry moat 15 ft deep. Near the harbor stood the old city wall at Fort Bougen, a stone face between 25 and 35 ft high with its own dry moat below it. Between and around those old forts, the Germans had laid a modern web of bunkers, pillboxes, gun emplacements, and trenches, each one sighted so that its neighbors could [music] cover it with fire.
Some of the concrete ran up to 7 ft thick. A man standing inside one of those positions could look at the wall in front of him and feel that nothing the Americans carried could reach him through it. And for most of what they carried, he was right. The hardest concrete of all sat down by the water. During the occupation, the Germans had built a submarine base at Brest, a vast bunker for their U-boats, and it was one of the strongest structures on the whole Atlantic coast.
Its roof ran more than 20 ft thick in places, layer poured over layer of reinforced concrete. In the weeks before the siege, Allied bombers went after it, dropping heavy bombs straight down onto that roof. Most simply cratered the surface. A few punched partway in and did almost nothing to the submarines sheltering underneath.
If you want to understand why the fight for Brest came down to a gun firing at point-blank range into walls, start there. The Germans had proven in concrete that you could not break Brest from the air. Someone was going to have to come up close and do it by hand. There was a hard question hanging over the whole operation, and American generals argued about it at the time.
Brest was a port, and the Allied armies racing toward Germany were starving for ports to land their supplies through. Brest sat far out at the western end of France, a long way behind the front, and by September its harbor was being wrecked faster than it could ever be repaired. Generals Bradley and Patton came to believe the place was not worth the men it would cost.
General Eisenhower wanted it taken anyway as insurance in case the war turned harder and America needed a harbor to land fresh troops straight from home. And Bradley put the other half of it plainly. Once the American army had put its hand to the plow, he felt, it should not let go. Blaskowitz made the same calculation from the other side.
In August, he had named Brest a fortress, a Festung, with orders to tie down as many Americans as possible for as long as possible, and to leave nothing useful behind. Both sides had decided this half-ruined port was worth a There was going to be one. The Americans reached the outskirts of Brest on the 7th of August.
Rather than rush it, General Troy Middleton, whose eighth core had the job, sealed the city off and spent weeks gathering strength for the assault. His core grew to three infantry divisions, the second, the eighth, and the 29th, with Ranger detachments, engineers, and armor in support. All told, something like 75,000 American troops closed in on the fortress.
They had a problem. Every officer looking at the map understood it. Concrete does not fall to speeches or to shell fire scattered from far off. A field gun firing from miles away lobs its shells down at a steep angle, and against a thick wall, those shells chip and scar and do very little else. To break reinforced concrete, you have to hit it flat, hit it hard, and hit it from close enough that the shell arrives with all its speed still in it.
That meant bringing a very big gun forward, out in the open, close to positions that could fire back. Most heavy artillery was never meant to work that way. The Americans had one weapon that could, and only one. It was called the gun motor carriage M12. It was an odd-looking machine. The army had taken the chassis of the M3 tank, the same boxy hull that carried an earlier generation of American armor, moved the engine forward, and bolted a huge gun onto the back.
That gun was a 155 mm piece of First World War design, a French pattern known as the Grande Puissance Filloux, a heavy field gun the Americans had built and stockpiled decades earlier. On its own, it was old. Mounted on tracks and driven straight up to a target, it became something new. The army had almost forgotten it owned the thing.
The first M12s were built back in 1942, and for a long while nobody was quite sure what they were for, so most of them sat in storage. Then the invasion of France came into view, and the planners understood they were going to have to break concrete at close range all along the Atlantic coast. The odd old gun on tracks turned out to be the one tool that could do it, and there was almost nothing else like it in the entire American arsenal.
The numbers around the M12 tell you how rare it was. Only about 100 were ever built. In the early months of 1944, >> [music] >> before the invasion of France, 74 of them were pulled out of storage and overhauled for combat. That small batch was all there was. Carried a crew of six. Because there was only room aboard for 10 rounds, it traveled with a companion tracked carrier, the M30, that hauled 40 more rounds and extra gunners.
The whole machine weighed about 29 tons. Its shell weighed 95 lb and left the muzzle at roughly 2,360 ft per second. And at that speed, at close range, it did not chip the concrete. It went through it. The crews had a name for what it did. They called the M12 the door knocker. Some called it King Kong. Both names meant the same thing.
This was the gun you brought up when a wall had to come down and nothing else would bring it. It could drive its shell through as much as 7 ft of reinforced concrete and turn a pillbox into a hole in the ground. One more fact makes this gun the right one to talk about at Brest. In the European theater in 1944, the M12 was the only American self-propelled 155-mm gun in service.
Its heavier successor, the M40, did not arrive until 1945. So, when the records of that autumn describe a self-propelled 155 firing directly into the forts of Brest, there is no guesswork about which machine they mean. There was only one it could be. The full assault opened on the 25th of August. Began the way modern sieges begin, with artillery and aircraft working the German positions over, dropping bombs and rockets and napalm across the strong point.

Then the infantry moved in. The fight turned into something slow and grinding. The Americans called it bite and hold. They took the fortress apart one position at a time. A squad of infantry against a bunker, flamethrowers and satchel charges against the firing slits, and behind them the heavy guns brought forward to break the concrete the infantry could not.
The fight moved in stages. None of them were quick. The first big attack on the 25th of August made only slow progress against the outer ring of strong points. A second major push came on the 1st of September, and the decisive assault opened on the 8th. Week after week the Americans fed infantry, engineers, and rangers into the strong points, and week after week the Germans made them pay for every bunker.
This was some of the hardest siege fighting the American Army did in the whole of the war in Europe, and much of it happened far from the headlines while the rest of the world watched the armies racing east toward the German border. This is where the gunners learned the exact math of the thing, and the math is worth hearing because it shows how careful the work had to be.
American artillery officers testing the M12 against reinforced concrete found a strange narrow window. Fired from under 2,000 yd, the shell arrived so fast and so flat that it shattered against the concrete surface without punching through. Fired from beyond 4,000 yd, it lost too much speed on the way. In the band between 2,000 and 4,000 yd though, with a special concrete piercing fuse set to delay, the shell would bury its nose into the wall before it went off.
Three to five rounds like that, and the crews could drive a hole clean through 6 ft of reinforced concrete. So, that is where they fired from. Close enough to hit flat and hard. Far enough that the shell held together. Out in the open where the German gunners could see them come. A gunner on an M12 at Brest [music] was doing the single most dangerous thing an artilleryman can do.
He was trading shots with a fortress at a range where the fortress could shoot back. A pillbox is holding up an infantry advance. It’s firing slits sweeping a street or a field, and nothing the rifleman carry can touch the men inside. Word goes back, and an M12 is brought forward. The crew of six edges the 29-ton machine into a firing position with a clear line to the wall, often in plain view of the enemy.
Its own load is tiny, only 10 rounds aboard. So, the M30 carrier crawls up behind it with 40 more rounds and extra hands to pass them across. Then the gunner goes to work, slow and exact. The first shot, with a delay fuse, finds the range. Then he switches to the concrete-piercing fuse and begins driving rounds into the same spot on the wall, one after another, 95 lb of steel at a time, until the concrete around the slit cracks, caves inward, and the position falls silent.
It is patient, deliberate work done in about the worst place on Earth to be patient. The fuse itself became part of the record. In September 1944, American gunners wrote up a field artillery report with a title as plain as a hardware label. Was called the firing of the 155-mm gun M12 on destruction missions with the T105 fuse, and that was exactly what it described.
The report noted that the high speed of the M12 shell made it a good match for the concrete piercing fuse at sensible ranges. In other words, the men doing the work stopped and wrote down how to knock a fortress apart, so the next battalion would not have to learn it the hard way. The concrete gave way in pieces across September.
On the 10th, the 8th division reached the old city wall at Fort Bougen. That 25- to 35-ft stone face. Heavy guns were brought up to blast a breach in it at point-blank range, and at first, even that failed. The wall was that stubborn. Two days later, on the 12th, the 29th division came up against forts Karen Rue and Montbury on the western edge of the city.
Karen Rue fell that same afternoon. Montbury did not. Fort Montbury was the hardest single problem of the siege, and it shows you what the Americans and their allies were up again. Those walls were 40 ft of masonry and packed earth, built to stop the cannon of the 1700s and more than equal to a lot of what 1944 could throw.
To crack it, the British sent 15 Churchill tanks fitted with flamethrowers, the machines the crews called crocodiles from the 141st Regiment of the Royal Armoured Corps. The first try on the 14th of September went badly. Four crocodiles went in and three were lost. The attack was called off. They came back on the 16th.
Six crocodiles led the second assault and this time with the flame tanks working the walls and the heavy guns hammering the concrete, the fort’s moat and its walls on two sides caught fire and the defense finally broke. When Montbrey surrendered, only about 80 men walked out of it. Carreg Roe gave up about a hundred.
The garrisons that were supposed to hold those forts for weeks had been ground down to a handful. The American side of what happened to that concrete is documented and documented in the plainest terms by the men who did it. A lieutenant colonel named Bradford Butler of the 258th Field Artillery Battalion, an M12 unit, wrote up his battalion’s work against German fortification.
43 pillboxes were attacked by short-range M12 fire, he reported. One of them by pure direct fire. The gun adjusted with a delay fuse and then switched to the concrete fuse once the first shot found the target. His conclusion was one flat sentence. Evidence of penetration was obtained on all targets. 43 concrete pillboxes, and the gun went through everyone.
That is the record on the American side. The gunners knew what their weapon did. They measured it, and they wrote it down. Go looking for the other side of it, though, and you find silent. I went through what the German record leaves us. There is no German war diary, no prisoner debrief, and no post-war study written by the officers who held Brest that names the M12.
Nothing on that side ties the collapse of any one fort to that heavy direct fire. The German accounts describe the garrison, the shortage of supply, the weight of the American attack, and the surrender, and they do it in general terms. They do not point at the gun. Whoever inside those bunkers understood what was breaking their walls, he did not leave us a line about it that survived.
There are reasons for that silence if you look for them. Men inside a bunker under direct fire rarely know the exact machine that is breaking their wall. They only know the wall is breaking. The officers who might have written it down were lost in the fighting or marched into a prison camp with the rest, and the fortress fell in confusion, its paperwork burned or scattered.
What survives from the German side was written mostly afterward from memory [music] about the broad shape of the battle rather than the gun at the end of one particular street. So, the silence proves nothing about the M12 either way. It is just the ordinary way a beaten garrison forgets the details of how it was beaten.
So, we are not going to invent one. There is no German officer’s quote to give you here because there is no honest one to give. What we have instead is the concrete, which is a kind of testimony, and what Ramcke did, which is another. Because the walls did come down and the fortress did fall and it fell fast.
The forts that were built to hold for months held for a matter of weeks. The inner garrison surrendered on the 18th of September. 37,000 German soldiers walked into captivity. Ramcke himself held out one day longer in his command post out on the Crozon Peninsula across the water, and on the 19th of September he gave up the fortress.
Before he did, he made a point of firing one last artillery shell himself, a small stubborn gesture from a man who had promised to fight to the end, and then he surrendered and the promise was over. The cost of taking Brest was real. The Americans suffered close to 10,000 casualties across the siege, a heavy bill for a single port.
And here is the bitter twist that hangs over the whole thing. The entire reason to take Brest was to capture a working harbor, a place to land the supplies that the armies driving into Germany desperately needed. Ramcke’s second order, the one about leaving the port useless, had been carried out to the letter.
His engineers had wrecked the harbor so thoroughly that the allies never really used it. The Americans won the fortress and inherited a ruin. There is one more thing that makes the decision to storm Brest stand out. The other great German fortress ports on the French Atlantic [music] coast, places like Lorient and Saint-Nazaire with U-boat bunkers of their own, were never assaulted at all.
The Americans simply surrounded them, left a light screen of troops to watch them, and drove on toward Germany. Those garrisons sat locked up behind their concrete until the very end of the war, surrendering only in May of 1945. Brest was the one the allies chose to take by force. That is why the heavy guns came up to the walls there and nowhere else on that coast quite like it.
But the fortress fell and that is the verdict the concrete wrote. Here was a general who had held ground in Crete and in the desert with one of the best divisions in the German army under him. He sat behind 7 ft of reinforced concrete and 40-ft walls with orders to hold to the last cartridge. He was a prisoner inside 6 weeks.
The forts did not hold for months. They came apart, one strong point and one pillbox at a time, under infantry and flame. And where the walls were thickest, under a strange old gun on tracks that drove up close and knocked on the door until the door gave. That is the thing to hold on to about the door knocker.
It was no wonder weapon. Just a First World War gun bolted to a worn-out tank hull, built in tiny numbers, crewed by six men who had to expose themselves in the open to make it work. There was nothing elegant about it. What it had was the one quality the fortress could not answer. Could reach the concrete, and the concrete could not reach back through it fast enough to matter.
To break a bunker, the crew had to drive a 29-ton machine into the open, inside the range of the very guns they were trying to destroy. Then they had to work slowly and calmly, walking their shells onto the wall three to five rounds at a time, while that wall was full of men trying to stop them. This is no rear area artillery jewel.
It is a knife fight with a very large knife. The record does not give us most of their names. Gives us their battalion numbers and their reports and the holes they left in the concrete. And that, in the end, is who this story belongs to. Not the machine, and not the general who lost the fortress. Belongs to the ordinary gunners of a handful of field artillery battalions.
The 258th and the others like it. They took an old gun nobody expected much from and used it to do the one job that had to be done and could not be done any other way. The German record forgot them. The concrete did not. Go back for a moment to that paratrooper in the strong point on the western edge of Brest, the one who felt the wall jump on a gray morning in September.
He had been told the fortress would hold for months. Within weeks he was either a prisoner or gone from the line. His fort was a burned and broken shell. His commander was marched off into captivity and the port he had bled to hold turned into rubble that helped no one. Somewhere in the wall of his position, if it still stands, there is very likely a hole about the width of a dinner plate driven clean through the concrete by a 95-lb shell fired from an old French gun on American track.
The Germans never wrote its name. But it signed its work in every wall it went through.
