308 vs 30-06 vs 270: Which Legend Actually Wins in 2026

The .270 Winchester is nothing more than the .30-06 case with the neck squeezed down to hold a skinnier bullet.

270 is the finest open country deer cartridge ever made, they are echoing Jack O’Connor whether they know his name or not. And then, in 1952, came the youngest of the three, >>  >> the .308 Winchester. If the .270 chased speed, the .308 chased something less romantic and a lot more practical. Efficiency. It is the .

30-06 built shorter, a compact cartridge born from the military round that became the 7.62 by 51 NATO. That shorter case fits in a shorter, lighter, faster rifle action. And because it was born military, it ended up everywhere on Earth, cheaper than the other two, in more kinds of rifles than the other two, with more match grade target ammunition than the other two will ever have.

On raw speed, the .270 is the king of the three. With those lighter bullets, it leaves the muzzle roughly 110 feet  per second faster than the .

30-06 and it shoots the flattest of the family. That part,  the .270 crowd gets right. But here is where they overreach. The .30-06  is not far behind. Load a good 150 grain bullet in an ’06  and you are running right around 3,000 feet per second yourself. That gives up almost nothing to the .

270 at any range a person actually shoots an animal. And the ’06 holds a card neither of the others can play. It can throw those heavy 180 and 200 grain bullets. The ones the  .270 physically cannot handle and the .308 starts to run out of steam pushing. On the other end, a .308 out of a longer 24-inch barrel closes most of the velocity gap to a shorter barreled ’06, which tells  you barrel length matters nearly as much as which cartridge you picked.

But here is the part that actually matters and it is the number the entire internet argues about while getting it backwards. On a 200-yard zero, the difference in bullet drop between a fast  .270 and a heavy .308 way out at 300 yards is about 3 inches. 3 inches and  they are separated by less than 100 foot pounds of energy at that distance.

Inside 250 yards, the gap  between all three of these is so small it would not matter to a single deer that ever lived. So all  that screaming about which one shoots flatter and hits harder at the ranges where 90% of game is  actually killed is an argument about almost nothing at all. Which raises the real question, >>  >> the one that separates the people who understand this from the people who just repeat numbers.

If the trajectories are nearly identical and the energy is nearly identical, what actually  kills the animal? A bullet only expands above a certain speed. >>  >> For most standard lead core hunting bullets, that speed is around 2,000 ft per second at the moment it hits.

Drop below it, way out there at distance, and your expensive bullet turns into a solid slug that poke a pinhole. The tougher copper bullets need even more, closer to 2,500 ft per second to open up reliably. Now, watch what that does to our three legends. >>  >> Because the .270 starts so fast, it stays above that magic expansion speed farther down range than the other two.

That, right there, is the real argument of the .270 crowd, the one they feel in their gut, but usually cannot explain. Way out past 400 yd, the fast little .270 is  still opening up and killing clean. A slower round out there might be starting to struggle. But, here is the part  the .270 diehards do not want to hear.

Inside the ranges where almost everybody actually hunts, >>  >> inside 300 yd or so, all three of these cartridges are moving well above that expansion threshold with any decent bullet. All three expand. All three kill clean. So, the velocity advantage that .270 fans worship is completely real. And it is completely useless to a man whose longest shot is  200 yd.

Both camps have been half right this whole time and screaming  past each other. The speed matters, but only at distances most hunters never shoot. Which brings  us to the one honest weakness of the .270, the thing that quietly caps it, >>  >> and almost nobody talks about it. The .

270 has been made with the same barrel twist rate since  1925, a 1 in 10 twist. And that twist can only stabilize bullets up to about 150 grains. It physically cannot spin the long, heavy,  aerodynamic bullets that modern long-range shooting is built around. >>  >> The .270 is, in a real sense, a brilliant cartridge frozen in 1925.

The gun industry knows this, which is exactly why they built a modern replacement called the .68 Western. It is the same skinny .277 bullet in a case with a faster twist that can finally handle those heavy modern bullets. So, if you love the idea of the .270, but wanted to reach into the modern era, that already exists, and it has a different name.

The grandfather, the .30-06, never had that problem because it will spin anything you feed it. A couple of quick things before we crown this because somebody out there is already itching to bring them up. They are not, but that is a different video. So, which legend  actually wins in 2026? The honest answer has three parts and then  one real winner.
