10mm vs .45 ACP: The Biggest Lie in The Gun Industry
A lot of the 10 mm for sale in America right now is a .40 Smith & Wesson wearing a taller case and a bigger price tag. The most powerful factory auto pistol round a regular man is supposed to be able to buy, drained of the exact thing that made it worth buying, and sold to you at full price by companies betting you’ll never own the $50 tool that catches them. Same speed as a .
40, same energy, same size hole. You pay more, you feel more recoil at the range, and the target down range can’t tell the difference. That’s the accusation, and it’s a serious one. So, I’m going to prove it, and I’m going to draw the line exactly where the truth draws it, because the size of this lie is the whole story, and most people get it wrong in both directions.
It runs all the way back to why the 10 mm exists in the first place, to a cartridge a Marine Colonel built to fix a problem the whole gun world had just watched play out, and to the moment the industry quietly decided you didn’t need the thing you were paying for. That’s where this starts, because the second you understand what was done to this cartridge, the whole 10 versus .
45 argument changes. It stops being a fight about which round is king, and turns into a fight about which round is even telling you the truth. So, we’re going to do both. >> >> We’re going to expose what the factory did to the 10 mm honestly and narrowly, because the exact size of that lie matters.

Start with why the round exists, because it explains everything that came after. 1986, South Miami. A group of FBI agents boxes in two bank robbers, and in about 4 and 1/2 minutes, it turns into one of the worst gunfights in the Bureau’s history. Two agents dead, five wounded. And the lesson that came out of it had nothing to do with tactics.
The agents had landed square hits with the 9 mm and the .38 [clears throat] of the day, and the two men had kept fighting anyway. Whatever you think of the FBI, that part was real, and it sent every agency in the country looking for a handgun round that hit harder. What they found was a cartridge a Marine Colonel named Jeff Cooper had built 3 years earlier in 1983 to do exactly that, the 10 mm Auto.
That’s the round we’re talking about, and here’s the first thing almost everybody gets wrong about it. Everybody thinks the 10 mm was born hot. It wasn’t. Cooper’s original specification, that same 1983, was a 200 grain bullet at 1,000 ft per second. Do the math, and that’s about 440 ft lbs. A flat-shooting .

45, basically, with a better trajectory. A medium-velocity combat round, not a hand cannon. That’s what Cooper actually asked for. Then, Norma loaded the first commercial 10 mm to 1,200 ft per second instead of 1,000. 50% hotter than the man designed it for. By some accounts, nobody even told Cooper until the ammunition was already shipping.

Cooper’s cartridge got turned into something louder than he ordered before it ever hit a shelf. Then, the FBI adopted it after Miami, couldn’t run the hot loads in mass qualification because the recoil wrecked their scores, and downloaded it back to around 950 with a 180-grain bullet.
And here’s the irony that ought to hang over this entire video. The .40 Smith & Wesson, running 180-grain at right around 1,000 ft per second, is mathematically closer to Cooper’s real 1983 specification than almost any factory 10-mm on the shelf. The caliber the internet spent 30 years mocking as .
40 short and weak is, by the numbers, closer to what the father of the 10-mm actually wanted than the ammunition wearing his cartridge’s name. Now, the part that costs you money today. The major manufacturers never really stopped downloading. They keep loading a lot of their everyday 10-mm to roughly that same soft level in the full-length case, because it’s cheaper to build, it’s easier on the gun, and almost nobody with a chronograph is checking.
So, you pick up a box stamped with what’s billed as the hardest-hitting factory auto pistol cartridge a regular man will ever carry, and more often than you’d think the rounds inside are doing .40 Smith & Wesson work. Put a number on it. A box of Remington 10-mm says 180-grain at 1,150 ft per second.
Run it over a chronograph out of a Glock 20, and you’ll see 950, maybe 980. 200 ft per second gone, and that isn’t a bad lot. It’s the everyday condition of a lot of the big-name 10-mm on the shelf. >> >> The box says 10-mm. The chronograph says .40 Smith & Wesson. Now, I have to draw the line carefully, because this exact claim is where a channel that overreaches gets buried in its own comments, and it deserves to.
This is not all 10-mm. This is specifically the big manufacturer mass-market stuff, and mostly the defensive hollow points, because most hollow points built in this caliber were designed to open at slow 40 speeds and they’ll tear themselves apart at true 10 mm velocity. So, the factory keeps the charge low on purpose.
The boutique loaders are a different story. Run Underwood or Buffalo Bore over a chronograph and it hits the number on the box every time. That’s not my opinion. That’s what the chronograph says. And the men who actually shoot this cartridge know it, which is exactly why they buy from those smaller outfits and side-eye the big names.
And it isn’t only the 10. One of the sharpest things anybody said under the last video is that the .357 Magnum is getting the exact same treatment. A lot of factory .357 now chronographing closer to a hot .38 than to a magnum for the identical reason. So, it’s soft enough that everybody can shoot it. The industry figured out that a detuned cartridge with a powerful name outsells an honest one.
The number on the box stopped being a measurement. It became marketing. If you’d rather know what your ammo actually does than what the label claims, subscribe. That’s the whole channel. So, now we can have the real fight because now you know the terms. When we line up 10 mm against .45 ACP, we’re not comparing the box.
We’re comparing the truth. And the truth splits down the middle depending on which 10 mm you actually bought. Start with raw energy because that’s the 10’s whole reputation. Honest, full power 10 mm. A 200 grain bullet at 1,200 ft per second carries over 630 ft lbs out of a semi-auto. That’s .41 Magnum territory without a cylinder. A standard .
45 230 grain at 830 to 850 runs 370 to 400 ft lbs. 200 ft lbs less per trigger pull. If muzzle energy were the only question, the 10 wins and the video’s over. It isn’t the only question, and the .45 is about to prove it three different ways. The first thing the .45 does that no energy number captures is the size of the hole. A 230-grain .
45 starts at 452 thousandths of an inch wide and heavy, and a good hollow point opens it up dramatically inside tissue. A 10-mm starts at 400 thousandths, and its best expansion runs narrower, and that’s from the hot lightweight loads. The heavier ones most people actually carry open up less. So, the .
45 is punching a wider channel to begin with >> >> and staying wider when both expand. Now, the part the industry doesn’t like to talk about. Hollow points. Clog. Push one through heavy clothing or a barrier, and it can plug up and fail to open at all, and it happens more than anybody selling ammo wants to admit. When that happens, the round is back to its starting diameter.
And that’s the .45’s floor, the worst it can do. 452 thousandths against the 10’s 400 thousandths. 12% wider on its worst day with no expansion at all. The .45 doesn’t need to open up to out-hole a 10-mm that didn’t open up either. It’s bad day is still wider than the other round’s bad day. That’s a floor the 10 can’t match, and it’s pure geometry, not opinion.
The second thing changes the whole debate, and it has nothing to do with gel. Thread a suppressor onto a .45. Standard 230-grain ball leaves the barrel around 830 ft per second. The speed of sound is about 1125. That round is subsonic straight from the factory. Every standard .45 load on the market is. You don’t buy special ammunition.
You don’t download anything. You don’t change your zero. The ammo in your nightstand magazine right now runs quiet under a can. Now, thread a can onto a 10 mm. The entire point of the 10 is velocity. 12, 13, 1400 ft per second. All of it’s supersonic. The suppressor kills the muzzle blast and the bullet still breaks the sound barrier and cracks down range, announcing itself to everyone in earshot.
Yes, you can buy subsonic 10 mm 200 grain downloaded to 900, but look at what you just did. You threw away the one thing the 10 does better than everything, its speed. And a 200 grain 10 at 900 has less energy than a 230 grain 45 at 830. Less mass, narrower bullet, same speed. You turned your 10 mm into a worse 45.

And almost nobody in this debate says it out loud. It’s about your walls. The USCCA ran a wall penetration study. Defensive hollow points fired into spaced sheetrock panels built to mimic interior walls. The .45 with a defensive load punched through around six walls of sheetrock, about three interior walls, right in line with 9 mm and .
357 magnum. The 10 mm went through over 10 walls, five interior walls, nearly double. Think about what that means at 3:00 in the morning. Every wall that bullet passes through is a wall between the threat and someone you love asleep in the next room. The same velocity that makes a 10 mm reach a grizzly’s vitals makes it reach through your drywall and into the room you didn’t aim at.
One of those targets you chose, the other one you didn’t. Inside a house, that reach stops being a feature and becomes a liability. And the .45’s slower, wider, heavier bullet dumps its energy in the barrier faster, doing enough to the threat without doing too much to the house. Now, let me hand the 10 mm its real ground because it has ground the .
45 can’t touch, and its owners are right about it. Where the 10 earns every bit of its recoil is on animals with thick hide and heavy bone. There’s a two-man Danish military unit, the Sirius Patrol, that runs dog sled teams across northeast Greenland for months at a stretch, 40 below, no resupply, no backup, in country with polar bears that weigh over a thousand pounds and can outrun a dog team on flat ice.
Their rifle is the primary. Their sidearm is a Glock 20 in 10 mm. Not because it’s the ideal bear gun, but because it’s the most practical one. 15 rounds of full power hardcast in a semi-auto light enough to ride on a sled for four months. When the bear is on top of you and the rifle is under the sled, 15 rounds of deep driving 10 mm is the answer, and a .
45 is not because it doesn’t penetrate deep enough at its velocity to reach vitals through heavy bone at a bad angle on an animal that size. That’s not opinion. That’s what the penetration data says, and what the men who bet their lives on it chose. If you live or work where big animals can kill you, the 10 mm is the answer, and the conversation’s over.
And to be fair all the way around, even in that country the 10 doesn’t get the final say because a lot of experienced backwoods men still holster a .44 magnum or a stout hardcast .45 instead, and we’ll settle that one another day. That versatility is the 10’s whole soul, and it’s worth saying plainly. You can run heavy hardcast for the woods and swap a magazine to a sane velocity defensive load for town.
One pistol covering two worlds. No .45 does that. But, and this is the whole point of the video, only if you load it honest. Feed your 10 the downloaded factory stuff, and you’ve thrown away the reason to own it. And at that moment, the .45 owner standing next to you has the better argument because his round is doing its real job while yours is doing an impression of a lesser one. Here’s the fact the .
45 camp usually doesn’t know they have. The .45 platform can actually reach up and touch 10 mm power, and the 10 can never reach back. It’s called the .45 Super. Same case dimensions, same bullet, same overall length as your .45 ACP, just loaded to around 28,000 lb per square inch instead of the standard 21. A .
45 Super pushes a 185 grain bullet to around 1,200 ft per second, near 600 ft lb. 10 mm energy out of a .45 with a wider bullet. To run it, you need a stronger recoil spring and a supported barrel, and a lot of aftermarket 45 barrels already handle it. Frame doesn’t change, magazines don’t change, holster doesn’t change. Push it further and you get the 460 Rowland, 230 grain at 1150, over 670 ft lbs, matching the hottest 10 mm loads with a bullet 5/100 of an inch wider.
Neither one went mainstream. Factory ammo is thin. You’re mostly reloading or ordering online, and that’s a real limitation. But the physics don’t care about marketing. The 45 platform climbs to 10 mm power. The 10 mm platform cannot climb to 45 diameter. >> >> That equation runs one direction, and no amount of velocity changes it.
Now, recoil, and not the lazy which one kicks harder version. This is about your second, third, and fourth shots, because in a fight, you don’t fire once. A 45 pushes. Slow rise. The muzzle climbs gradual, and the gun rolls straight back into the web of your hand, predictable, and the sights come back to where they started.
A full-power 10 mm snaps. The muzzle whips up before the recoil spring finishes cycling. The sight picture doesn’t just move, it jumps, and it doesn’t come back to the same place because the snap adds a rotation, the push doesn’t. Slapped versus shoved. Both move you. One lets you recover, the other makes you chase the sights. On the first shot from a ready position, it doesn’t matter. Both are accurate.
On the third shot in 2 seconds under adrenaline, the 45’s push gets you back on target faster, and shooters of similar skill will group tighter in rapid fire with it. The bitter joke is that downloaded factory 10 mm kicks softer than real 10 mm because it’s slower. So, you paid magnum money, and you’re getting 40 ballistics, and you’re not even getting the recoil break a purpose-built 40 would give you.
A Glock 22 in 40 is lighter, slimmer, and holds the same 15 rounds as your Glock 20 running downloaded 10. The downloaded 10 mm manages to be the worst version of both calibers at once. Two more things, and between them they settle which pistol actually belongs in your hand. >> >> First, longevity, because pressure isn’t just about how it feels. A 45 runs around 21,000 PSI. A full power 10 runs closer to 37,500. That gap is stress on the barrel, the slide, the locking surfaces, the frame.
A well-maintained 1911 in 45 can run 50,000 rounds and still lock up tight. Run that same count of full power 10 through a polymer frame, and you’ll be replacing parts along the way. The 45 was designed not to punish the gun that fires it, and 120 years of service life is the proof. Second, cost, and this is the one that governs how much you actually practice, which is the thing that keeps you alive.
A round of 45 American Eagle runs around 30 cents. A round of factory 10 mm runs around 45, half again more for ammunition that chronographs at 40 velocities anyway, unless you’re buying boutique. And the honest 10, the Underwoods and Buffalo Bores, runs 65 cents to a dollar a round. Nobody practices at a dollar a round.

Cheap range ammo at the bottom, carry ammo at the top. Those are two different guns in your hand. You’ve been training on a .40 and betting your life on a magnum you’ve barely fired. The .45 closes that gap for free. There’s a bitter footnote that makes the whole thing worse, the FBI. The agency that kicked off the entire 10 mm craze still couldn’t tame the recoil even in its softened form, and that failure is the entire reason the .40 was invented.
And down the line, the Bureau abandoned the .40 as well and circled back to 9 mm once modern 9 mm hollow points finally closed the gap with lighter recoil and a fuller magazine. The whole power race the 10 was built to win fizzled out with the very people who lit the fuse retreating to the smallest cartridge on the table.
That’s history you can check >> >> and it’s a caution, not a verdict, because you’re not the FBI and your needs aren’t theirs. Now what each of these costs to get into 2026 numbers, because the platform matters as much as the round. The 10 mm home is the Glock 20, right around $718 new and $540 used. For a 15-round magnum class semi-auto that doubles as bear defense, that is a lot of capability for the money >> >> and it’s the gun that kept the whole cartridge alive through the years the industry tried to bury it.
The .45 gives you more ways in. A double-stack Glock 21 runs about 660 new and turns up used around 400, which might be the most gun for the dollar on this whole page. Or the classic route, a working 1911 for around 630. That famous single-action trigger and a century of proof at the cost of capacity. And here’s the move that ends the argument for a lot of men.
A Glock 21 in .45 accepts a 10 mm slide swap. Same frame, different slide, different barrel, different magazines. One pistol that runs both calibers. .45 for the house, subsonic and quiet under a can with no specialty ammo. 10 mm for the woods, full power, deep penetration. The quietest suppressed option and the most powerful semi-auto woods option built on one frame you already own.
That isn’t a compromise. That’s a system and it’s the honest answer to the man who genuinely needs both worlds. So, here’s the verdict and I’m not going to hand you a fake winner because these two rounds aren’t really competing for the same job once you see them clearly. The 10 mm is the better woods gun, full stop.
15 rounds of hardcast at 1,200 ft per second in a semi-auto. And if you spend real time where large animals can kill you, >> >> it earns every penny and every bit of snap. But, it only wears that crown when it’s fed genuine full-power ammunition and the majority of what fills the shelf is not.
Load your 10 with the ordinary stuff off the shelf and odds are you’ve paid a premium for .40 Smith & Wesson ballistics in a bigger gun with a sharper kick for numbers you could have gotten cheaper and softer somewhere else. The single way to get the performance your receipt promised is to own the ammunition decision yourself.
The named hot loads or brass you built at your own bench. If you won’t do that, the honest answer is blunt. You bought the badge, not the performance. The .45 ACP is the better everything else gun and the more honest cartridge in the bargain. Wider hole on its best day and its worst, the best suppressor host there is, safer through your own walls, gentler on the gun, cheaper to practice with, and it feels the same in your hand whether you’re training or carrying.
What’s on the box is what’s in the gun, and it’s been that way for 120 years because the pressure’s low enough that nobody ever had a reason to cheat it. Cooper designed the 10 mm to replace the .45, >> >> and the .45 is chambered in more guns, loaded by more makers, and stacked on more shelves than the 10 ever touched.
The cartridge built to kill it never even outsold it. That’s the real verdict, not one round to rule them all. >> >> Put the 10 in the woods, load it honest. Put the .45 everywhere else.
