Electricity has changed our world. Only a few hundred years ago, it was seen as a mysterious and magical wonder. Welcome to Watch Mojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the most consequential and pivotal moments that redefine civilization. Farming is absolutely revolutionary. Number 20, the fall of the Berlin Wall.

For 28 years, the Berlin Wall severed families, cities, and ideologies, standing as the Cold War’s most visceral symbol of division. The city is divided into four sectors at the end of World War II. In 1961, the Western sectors are surrounded by a fortified border 155 km long, the wall. By 1989, reformist pressure across Eastern Europe had eroded communist control and East Germany’s leadership was crumbling.

On the evening of November 9th, pilot bureau spokesman Gunther Shabowski read new travel regulations at a press conference without realizing they weren’t yet in effect. The words spread instantly and crowds flooded the checkpoints. Overwhelmed guards yielded and jubilant Berliners began dismantling the wall with hammers and chisels.

The first crossing opened at Bourneholmer Strazza just before midnight. They were just heaving through. The gates were open. The guards were gone. The people were just pouring through. Within a year, Germany was reunited. The fall of the Berlin Wall also helped catalyze the collapse of communist governments across the Eastern Block.

Number 19, the first powered flight. From the beginning of human history, flight belonged to birds, myths, and dreams. Inventors experimented for centuries, but sustained controlled flight remained frustratingly out of reach. That changed on December 17th, 1903 in North Carolina when Orville and Wilbur Wright launched their flyer for 12 seconds across 120 ft.

The successful test of the Wright brothers flying machine was a watershed moment in human history. It was the first powered flight in history and the brothers made four flights that morning. The final test with Wilbur at the controls covered 852 ft in 59 seconds. What made them succeed was a better method.

They built their own wind tunnel and designed their own propellers from scratch. Over the following century, aircraft would shrink the world, transform warfare, connect global economies, and eventually carry humans beyond Earth’s atmosphere. So much of what we take for granted today, from commercial airlines, space shuttles, can be traced back to these two ordinary brothers and their unlikely stroke of genius.

Number 18, the development of the printing press. Before the printing press, books were copied by hand, making knowledge expensive, scarce, and largely controlled by religious and political elites. During the Middle Ages, books were written out by hand, mostly in monasteries. In the 1440s, Johannes Gutenberg combined movable metal type, oil-based ink, and mechanical printing into a system that changed the world.

The printing press was born, and all of a sudden, information could be reproduced faster and cheaper than ever before. Literacy expanded, ideas spread across borders, and scholars gained access to previously scarce texts. Gutenberg’s contemporaries were impressed. It was the first time a work had been available in such a large edition, and every copy was identical.

The written word now had authoritative status. The printing press helped fuel the Protestant Reformation, accelerated the scientific revolution, and encouraged the exchange of political ideas. Within the first 50 years of the first Bible, an estimated 15 million books were in circulation across Europe. Even Martin Luther’s 95 thesis spread through Germany in weeks because of Gutenberg’s innovation.

Number 17, the discovery of antibiotics. Until the 20th century, a contaminated wound or routine infection could easily prove fatal. In 1928, Scottish bacteriologist Alexander Fleming returned from Holiday to find that mold growing in a petri dish had killed the bacteria surrounding it.

What Fleming concludes is that the bacteria has been killed by something produced by the mold. And so this naturally occurring mold, something that’s literally in the air could be a bacteria killer. He identified the active compound as penicellin and that changed history. From there, it would take almost another decade before Howard Flory and Ernst Chain developed it into a usable drug.

Mass production during World War II transformed medicine almost overnight. It reportedly saved tens of thousands of Allied soldiers from infections that had killed more troops in every previous conflict than bullets had. Historians estimate that antibiotics have since saved hundreds of millions of lives globally.

Fleming’s accidental observation stands as one of history’s most fortunate breakthroughs. I certainly didn’t plan to revolutionize all medicine, Fleming later said. But I guess that’s exactly what I did. Number 16, the space age launch of Sputnik. On October 4th, 1957, a polished aluminum sphere just 58 cm across changed humanity’s relationship with the sky.

Until 2 days ago, that sound had never been heard on this earth. Suddenly, it has become as much a part of 20th century life as the where of your vacuum cleaner. It’s a report from man’s farthest frontier. The radio signal transmitted by the Soviet Sputnik. The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 into orbit, becoming the first artificial satellite in history.

Its faint radio beeps, detectable by amateur equipment worldwide, stunned the United States and ignited the space race. This triggered the unprecedented surge in government investment in science, engineering, and education. While rockets rapidly evolved from military tools into vehicles for exploration. Sputnik sent a shock wave through America and the world.

Not because of what it did, but because of what it meant. NASA was created the following year, specifically in response. Less than 12 years after Sputnik’s launch, Apollo 11 landed on the moon in July 1969. The little satellite that could burned up on re-entry after just 3 months in orbit. But the technological revolution it sparked has never stopped accelerating.

Number 15, the abolition of slavery. For millennia, slavery was embedded in many societies as a normal part of economic and social life. Empires, kingdoms, and colonial powers worldwide relied on forced labor to build wealth and maintain authority. The transatlantic slave trade that existed between the 16th and 19th centuries was as catastrophic as it was extensive.

By the late 18th century, a growing abolitionist movement began to form. Driven by enlightenment ideals, religious conviction, and testimony from formerly enslaved people, they began challenging an institution many had long considered inevitable. Britain abolished the slave trade in 1807 and emancipated enslaved people throughout its empire in 1833.

The United States followed with the 13th Amendment in 1865. Though formal abolition did not end exploitation and new forms of coerced labor persisted, it established freedom as a legal right rather than a privilege. It’s a statement of the need to rewire the country to change its moral axis. He’s now telling a new story about what America should be.

Number 14, the French Revolution. In 1789, France was a kingdom where birth, privilege, and aristocratic status determined a person’s place in society almost absolutely. Then, economic collapse, food shortages, and public frustration eventually ignited a movement that questioned centuries of royal authority.

The revolutionaries had challenged the might and arrogance of the French court in Versailles. They’d executed their king and created a republic whose watchwords were liberty, equality, and the rights of man. A government whose sovereignty was based in the people. Revolutionaries executed the king and proclaimed liberty, equality, and fraternity as governing principles.

The upheaval unleashed a decade of violence, including the reign of terror, in which thousands of people were officially executed. What they understood by terror was striking terror into the hearts of the enemies of the republic so that they would be either scared straight as it were or um arrested and disposed of.

Yet the revolution’s political ideals of citizenship and sovereignty of the people spread across Europe and into the Americas, dismantling the old orders logic from within. The effects of the revolution shook French political power so much that even the regimes that arose to contain its successes ultimately failed.

Number 13, the discovery of the Americas. Centuries ago, the people of Europe, Africa, and Asia developed largely separate from the civilizations of the Americas. That isolation ended in 1492 when Christopher Columbus’ voyage established contact between the peoples of the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

Believing himself to be in the Far East, Columbus calls the islands the Indies. In fact, he is on the edge of a new continent, the Americas. The consequences were enormous. Crops such as potatoes, maize, and tomatoes crossed the Atlantic and eventually reshaped the diets and demographics of Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Estimates suggest the potato alone fed the population growth that fueled European industrialization. In the other direction, diseases traveled as well, devastating indigenous populations across the Americas. Diseases that were endemic in the entire rest of the world were unknown here.

And and that’s why the epidemics of diseases brought from by Europeans were so devastating. Historians call this the Colombian exchange, but it was much more than an exchange of goods. Columbus’s expedition initiated the first truly global era. One whose consequences are still unfolding today. Number 12, the Black Death.

Sometimes history changes not because of a great leader or invention, but because of a catastrophe between 1346 and 1353. The Black Death swept across Europe, Asia, and North Africa, killing an estimated 75 to 200 million people. So many died that all believed it was the end of the world. Entire villages vanished and the scale of mortality alone created acute labor shortages that gave surviving workers unprecedented bargaining power.

This shattered the foundations of feudalism and accelerated the shift toward paid employment. Traditional authorities struggled to explain the catastrophe and their failure seated deep public doubt towards society and inherited institutions. The economic disruption and social upheaval that followed helped create conditions for the rise of the Renaissance.

In the end, one of history’s greatest catastrophes became one of its most consequential accelerants. All over Europe, great cities lie deserted. Number 11, the Renaissance. Emerging in 14th century Italy as a cultural event, the Renaissance eventually spread across Europe. It revived classical Greek and Roman learning while reorienting humanity’s view of itself.

The Renaissance was more than just the rebirth of antiquity. Men like Michelangelo created something new. They took the techniques and art of the ancient Greeks and Romans and developed them further. Artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo pushed the boundaries of representation while scholars re-examined science, literature, and philosophy with fresh eyes.

Leonardo alone produced anatomical drawings so precise they weren’t surpassed for a century. The movement fostered a spirit of systemic inquiry and individual achievement entirely new in scale and ambition. More than its masterpieces, what the Renaissance gave the world was a method. The idea that careful observation and human reason could unlock truth.

Much of the modern world’s intellectual revolution can be traced back to this remarkable rebirth. The legacy of the Renaissance has never died. It’s still alive today. We could say that the industrial revolution and therefore our modern world wouldn’t have been possible without all the things that were invented in the Renaissance.

Number 10, the fall of Constantinople. Historically, Constantinople served as the eastern anchor of Christian Europe and the crossroads of trade between Asia and the West. As the capital of the Byzantine Empire, it had survived countless invasions that would have destroyed lesser powers. But in 1453, Sultan Mehmed II brought it down after a 53-day siege, deploying massive bronze bombards, he dismantled the city’s ancient walls.

Just like that, the Byzantine Empire vanished, and the Ottomans emerged as the dominant power of the Eastern Mediterranean. Greek scholars fleeing the city carried classical manuscripts into Italy, fueling the Renaissance. As the overland Silk Road came under Ottoman control, European states began urgently seeking sea routes to Asia.

This directly triggered the voyages that eventually reached the Americas within four decades. Number nine, World War II. No conflict in human history matches World War II in scale. On 1st September 1939, Hitler launched an attack on Poland, marking the start of World War II. For the first time, foreign leaders recognized the extent of Hitler’s madness.

Between 1939 and 1945, more than 60 nations fought across continents, oceans, and skies, resulting in an estimated 70 to 85 million deaths. Historians believed unresolved issues from World War I created economic and political instability that fueled the Second War. The Holocaust alone systematically murdered 6 million Jews and millions of others through industrialized killing.

Yet, the war’s consequences extended beyond the battlefield. The United Nations was founded. Colonial empires began unraveling, and two new superpowers emerged to dominate global affairs. It concluded with atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. the first and only use of nuclear weapons in warfare. Humanity was reminded that it now possessed the power to destroy itself.

Following victory, the big three, Britain, America, and the Soviet Union, fought each other for supremacy. The shape of the world we live in today is the legacy of events of 1945. Number eight, Alexander the Great’s conquest of the Persian Empire. When Alexander the Great crossed into Persia in 334 B.CE CE at the age of 22.

He was taking on the largest empire the world had yet seen. By 330 B.CE. Precipilus had fallen and Darius III was dead. The Aimemened Empire extinguished in barely 4 years. Alexander has the failances that his father had created. This incredibly uh hardened and experienced battle force that is at his disposal.

But the true turning point was not simply a military victory. It was the cultural revolution that followed. Alexander deliberately fused Greek and Persian traditions, arranging mass marriages between his officers and Persian noble women. He founded cities across his conquests, seeding Greek languages, philosophy, science, and art from Egypt to Central Asia.

Though Alexander died in Babylon in 323 B.C.E. of 32. His helenistic synthesis continued shaping Rome, early Christianity and Islamic civilization for centuries. His conquest had opened the east to a flood of Western and Greek influence and the contact between cultures was to have a lasting effect on European and Asian civilization.

Number seven, the scientific revolution. For most of human history, the natural world was explained through ancient authorities and inherited tradition. Then between the 16th and 17th centuries, Capernicus, Galileo, Kepler, and Newton asked a question that proved dangerous. Newton is celebrated as the rational genius who propelled us out of medieval darkness and into the enlightenment.

What if accepted wisdom was simply wrong? Working through observation, experimentation, and mathematics, they revealed a universe governed by discoverable natural laws. Capernicus displaced Earth from the center. Newton reduced planetary motion to equations anyone could test. And that changed everything.

More consequential than any single discovery was the method itself. Evidence over authority, testing over tradition. The power of this approach is that it aims to remove preconceived ideas and in doing so deliver a more accurate description of the natural world. Every field of modern knowledge, medicine, engineering, chemistry, physics, traces their roots to this shift.

The evidence-based revolution also laid the logical foundation for every major technological advance that followed. Number six, the invention of writing. Civilization can preserve only so much through memory alone. Before writing, knowledge depended on oral tradition, records, and complex administration difficult to maintain across generations.

What happened in Mesopotamia and uniquely there is that the early people who were experimenting with writing had the idea in their minds that you could draw a symbol not for what it looked like but for what it sounded like. Around 3200 B.CE. Mesopotamians developed ununiform, one of the earliest known writing systems initially to track grain inventories and taxes.

The epic of Gilgamesh, the code of Hammurabi, and the first astronomical records all depended on this leap. Writing made governance at scale possible, allowed knowledge to compound over centuries, and transformed human memory into something that could outlast any individual. Every library, court record, and textbook traces its existence to those first clay tablets.

What began as an accounting tool became the medium through which writing today originated thanks to humanity’s decision to give its thoughts a permanent form. It is perhaps in some ways the most momentous achievement which homo sapiens has come up with that the idea that you can make a set of signs on a surface which other people would recognize and from that get the words of their language that it’s a momentous and most wonderful invention that the results of which are still crucial to us today. five, the discovery of fire. Long before cities, agriculture, or written language, humanity learned how to control one of nature’s most powerful forces. Fire does the following. It destroys harmful bacteria. It neutralizes toxins. It makes food taste better. And more importantly, it breaks down carbohydrates.

The mastery may have changed our biology. Fire provided warmth in hostile climates, protection from predators, and light that extended activity beyond daylight hours. Most importantly, it transformed what people could eat. Cooking made food safer, easier to digest, and more calorie efficient, a shift many scientists believe contributed to the development of larger brains.

Practically, fire became the foundation of metalwork, pottery, and eventually the steam engine. Every furnace, combustion engine, rocket launch, and power plant today descends from that first controlled flame. Mankind’s technological story arguably began the moment our ancestors learned not to fear fire, but to command it. If we’re looking at revolutions in human origins, control of fire must rank among the most important of them.

Number four, the industrial revolution. For thousands of years, most people lived and worked in ways their ancestors would have recognized. Life moved at the pace of muscle, wind, and water. Then in 18th century Britain, machines began doing work on a scale no human workforce could match.

To produce more efficiently and increase profits, cottage workers are increasingly brought together into industrial workshops or factories. Complex tasks are divided into simpler tasks. And to perform these simple tasks, new tools are invented. What turns tools into machines is the addition of superhuman energy. The industrial revolution transformed manufacturing, transportation, agriculture, and commerce, turning rural societies into interconnected economies.

Steam engines powered factories, railways, compressed distances, and mass production made goods available to millions of people. Between 1800 and 1900, Britain’s GDP per capita roughly tripled. The transformation, however, came with severe costs. Crowded cities, brutal labor conditions, and environmental degradation.

Despite this, in little more than two centuries, industrialization helped raise the standards of the economic world to heights previously unimaginable. It’s about finding out about the stuff of life that feeds into technological change. you know, new engines, new techniques, canals, tunnels, steam ships, factories develop.

It’s an enormous span where science and technology and industry all go together. Number three, the agricultural revolution. The decision to stay in one place is probably the most important resolution humanity ever made. For most of human existence, people survived as hunter gatherers, moving constantly in search of food.

When we discovered how to farm, we suddenly increased the ability of the land to support us. Then, beginning around 10,000 B.CE., communities in the fertile crescent began cultivating wheat and barley. Rice was later domesticated in Yangze Valley around 7,000 B.CE. While maize appeared in Meso America and potatoes in the Andes.

Farming produced surpluses that allowed permanent settlement, population growth, and labor specialization. This widescale transition, also called the Neolithic Revolution, transformed villages to empires. The next phase included the invention of the wheel, which helped in mechanization and transport of agricultural produce.

Other major institutions followed from the need to manage settled surplus producing societies. It is the roots quite literally of all society. Number two, the digital revolution. A few generations ago, information moved at the speed of paper, physical travel, and broadcast schedules. Up till the 1950s, computer data was still entered using punch cards.

It wasn’t until the 1970s that powerful processors made computers more common. Today, billions of people can communicate instantly across continents, access vast libraries of knowledge from their pockets, and participate in a global economy that never sleeps. This transformation emerged from the digital revolution driven by the microprocessor, personal computer, and internet.

In just a few decades, we saw the invention of the semiconductor, personal computer, and the internet. By 2026, billions of people were connected to the internet, and more data was being generated in less time than the entire past human civilization had managed. Entire industries were reinvented or rendered obsolete.

Financial systems, health care, education, warfare, and political power were all restructured around digital infrastructure. For the first time in history, a single individual could communicate instantly with a global audience. Technology is merging more and more with humans lives, and that technological change is happening faster than ever.

QQ4 Bob Dylan and Keith Richards have been close friends for nearly 40 years. The friendship began on a live television program in November of 1986 in the 11 seconds after Bob Dylan called Keith Richards music derivative on camera. Keith Richard’s response to that assessment, one sentence said without anger, without performance, with the specific directness of a man who has nothing to prove and knows it made Bob Dylan laugh.

Then made Bob Dylan go quiet. then made Bob Dylan say two words that people who know Bob Dylan say he almost never said to anyone. This is the story of those 11 seconds and the 40 years that followed them. The program was a live music interview special broadcast on an American network on the evening of November 3rd, 1986. The format was simple.

Two musicians, a host, an hour of conversation about music and the state of it. The producers had assembled the pairing of Bob Dylan and Keith Richards with the specific calculation of television producers who understand that two people with equally strong and potentially incompatible views about what music is and what it should do will produce better television than two people who agree about everything.

The calculation was correct, though not in the way the producers had anticipated. Bob Dylan was 45 years old in November of 1986. Bob Dylan had released Empire Burlesque the previous year and had been on the road for most of the intervening period as part of the True Confessions tour with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Bob Dylan was in November of 1986 in one of the most prolific and restless phases of a career that had consisted almost entirely of prolific and restless phases. A career that had moved through folk, rock, country, gospel, and back again, that had been declared finished at least six times by the music press, and at each time continued with the serene indifference of a river to the opinions of people standing on its banks.

Bob Dylan had been redefining what music could be. Since 1962, Bob Dylan had invented and reinvented himself so many times that reinvention had become his defining characteristic, not in the superficial sense of a performer changing costumes, but in the deeper sense of a musician who had never allowed his work to settle into a form that could be anticipated or categorized from the outside.

Bob Dylan understood influence and originality and the relationship between them better than almost anyone alive in 1986. Bob Dylan had spent 24 years thinking carefully and specifically about where music came from and where music was going and what it meant that those two things were always in constant conversation with each other.

Keith Richards was 42 years old in November of 1986. Keith Richards had been playing guitar professionally since 1962. Keith Richards had built a career on a foundation of American blues and rhythm and blues. A foundation that Keith Richards had studied with the systematic devotion of someone who understood that the tradition he was building on was not incidental to the music he was making, but essential to it.

that you could not understand what Keith Richards did without understanding where Keith Richards had come from and what Keith Richards had been listening to since he was a teenager in Dartford with American Import Records and a secondhand guitar and no teacher except the recordings themselves. Keith Richards had never pretended otherwise. Keith Richards had in fact spent considerable energy across his career making the lineage explicit, naming the artists, citing the recordings, insisting on the acknowledgement of influence that the mainstream music

industry had a long history of suppressing or ignoring or crediting to the wrong people. If anything, Keith Richards was more transparent about his sources than most musicians of his generation. Keith Richards had always said openly that the Rolling Stones came directly from the blues, that Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson and the specific tradition of the Mississippi Delta were not background influences, but foundational ones.

The music Keith Richards made was in direct and sustained conversation with that tradition, something Keith Richards considered not a limitation, but a responsibility and a form of respect. The interview had been running for 8 minutes when the host asked Bob Dylan about the current state of rock and roll.

Bob Dylan answered with the density and the indirection that characterized Bob Dylan’s responses to direct questions, turning the question over, approaching it from an unexpected angle, finding his way to what he actually thought through a series of observations that moved like a river rather than a road. Bob Dylan was not a straightforward interview subject.

Bob Dylan had been asked about rock and roll in hundreds of interviews across 24 years and had developed the habit of treating the question as an invitation to think out loud rather than a request for a prepared position. The producer Gerald Sherman said afterward that in the first 8 minutes of the interview, he had been slightly anxious, not because anything was going wrong, but because nothing was going anywhere in particular yet.

The interview had the feeling of two conversations happening simultaneously. Bob Dylan’s internal one and the external one visible to the cameras. And Gerald Sherman was not certain in those first eight minutes that the two conversations would converge into something. Bob Dylan talked about influence. Bob Dylan talked about originality.

Bob Dylan talked about the difference between music that absorbed a tradition and transformed it and music that absorbed a tradition and reproduced it. And then Bob Dylan made his assessment. And then Bob Dylan said with the precision of a man making a musical assessment rather than a personal judgment that the Rolling Stones work, and Bob Dylan was specific, naming Keith Richards as the guitarist whose approach he was discussing was derivative in a way that Bob Dylan found limiting.

Bob Dylan said it without hostility. Bob Dylan said it as a technical observation about the relationship between source material and the work that came from it. Bob Dylan said that Keith Richards played the blues the way the blues had already been played, rather than using the blues as a starting point for something that had not yet been played.

The confidence of a person who has spent long enough thinking about the same things as the person they are talking to that they can locate the exact point where their thinking diverges and say something useful about that point rather than simply defending their own position. The sentence acknowledged everything Bob Dylan had said, the assessment, the distinction Bob Dylan was drawing, the specific musical concern underlying the observation, and then turned it 90°.

Keith Richards took Bob Dylan’s own framework, the one Bob Dylan had used to analyze Keith Richards relationship to the blues tradition, and applied it back to Bob Dylan’s work with the same precision Bob Dylan had used to apply it to Keith Richards. Spare aimed. The sentence asked Bob Dylan something about Bob Dylan’s own music, about the relationship between Bob Dylan’s sources and Bob Dylan’s output that Bob Dylan had not been asked on television before.

The sentence did not attack. The sentence illuminated. Bob Dylan laughed. The laugh was not the polite laugh of someone responding to a joke. The laugh was the involuntary laugh of someone who has been genuinely surprised. The specific kind of surprise that a person of exceptional intelligence experiences when someone else’s intelligence exceeds their expectations.
