July, 1974, Pretoria, South Africa. Engineers at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research wheeled out their answer to a war that would not be fought with armies. The vehicle had a flat slab body bolted on top of an obsolete British truck chassis. It was tall, it was narrow, it looked like a delivery van wearing armor plate.

Veterans who later rode in it called it ungainly, top-heavy, and slow. But beneath that ridiculous silhouette sat an idea that would, three decades later, save thousands of American lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Pentagon would spend $48.5 billion trying to recreate what these South African engineers built for almost nothing using surplus British truck parts.

This is the story of the Hippo, Africa’s first mass-produced mine-protected armored personnel carrier, built on a Bedford chassis from Luton, designed to defeat the buried Soviet anti-tank mine, and the direct ancestor of every American Cougar, Buffalo, and mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicle that fought in the ED wars of the early 21st century.

War in Southern Africa in the 1970s was not fought across the cratered fields of Central Europe. It was fought along thin red ribbons of laterite gravel, kilometer after kilometer of dirt road, with bush pressing in on either side. An insurgent who buried a Soviet TM-46 anti-tank mine in such a road, then walked away, had a near-perfect weapon.

Cheap, anonymous, indiscriminate, almost impossible to defeat with conventional military force. The Rhodesian numbers tell the scale. Between 1972 and 1980, ZANLA and ZIPRA insurgents detonated 2,504 vehicle mines inside Rhodesia. They killed 632 people. They wounded 4,410. The pace accelerated viciously.

894 mines laid in 1978, 2,089 the following year. Almost six new mines every day. Each Soviet TM-46 contained roughly 5.5 kg of TNT under a 180 kg pressure fuse, enough to flip a 5-ton truck and kill everyone inside. According to a peer-reviewed forensic data set compiled by Imperial College surgeons, occupants of unprotected vehicles suffered an 11.4% fatality rate.

One in nine soldiers died when their truck rolled over a mine. Southwest Africa told the same story in slower tempo. The People’s Liberation Army of Namibia had decided at a SWAPO consultative congress in 1969 that mines would be its primary tactical weapon. From 1973 onwards, PLAN cadres infiltrating from southern Angola began systematically mining the dirt roads of Ovamboland.

Helmoed Römer-Heitman, the dean of South African defense writers, would later put it bluntly, “Mines came to define the conflict.” What made these wars different from the static minefields of an earlier age was layering. Insurgents took factory ordnance and improvised on top of it. Boosted TM-46 mines with 16 kg of supplementary explosive, mines hidden inside elephant dung, mines slipped into the seams of newly laid tar, anti-personnel devices paired with anti-tank charges to kill clearance teams, command-detonated charges fired by wire from a watcher in the bush. The

doctrine that American troops would meet on route Irish in Baghdad in 2004 had been written in a different language on a different continent 30 years earlier. The South African defense establishment saw it coming. On the 11th of February 1970, the chief of the South African Defense Force issued a formal order for the development of a mine protected personnel carrier.

The job went to a quietly spoken physical chemist named Dr. Vernon Joynt at the Defense Research Unit in Pretoria. By 1972, Joynt had settled on the geometrical idea that would define an entire class of military vehicles, a deep V-shaped hull angled at roughly 60° designed to deflect the rising plume of a mine blast outwards and downwards rather than catching it on a flat floor.

A mine detonating under a flat steel plate transferred almost all its energy upwards through the floor. A V-shape splits the blast wave and channels it sideways. Jooste thought about this geometry since he was a teenager. Now he had a war to test it in. Two questions confronted his team in early 1974. How to deliver a mine protected vehicle in months rather than years? And how to do it in a country whose conventional weapons procurement was strangled by United Nations arms embargoes? The answer to both questions was already parked in SADF storage yards

by the thousand. The Bedford RL. The Bedford RL was a 1953 British design from Vauxhall Motors at Luton. Roughly 74,000 were built. South Africa had operated them in army green since the late 1950s under what were then unremarkable Commonwealth purchasing arrangements. By the early 1970s, the SADF was replacing its tired RL fleet with a brand new locally built range called Samil.

That meant thousands of well understood, well documented Bedford 4×4 chassis were sitting around looking for a job. The first production order for what was now called the Hippo Mark 1R was placed in July 1974. The contract was distributed across three arms core coordinated contractors. The vehicle that emerged was deliberately almost defiantly simple.

An ungainly tall box of mild steel reinforced with patches of RB390 armor plate welded into a high narrow capsule mounted on top of the truck’s leaf sprung chassis. Inward facing benches in a staggered layout seated 10 infantrymen with a crew of two. Narrow plate glass slits served as vision blocks. Personal weapon firing ports lined the sides.

Combat weight came in at 8.8 tons. Length 6.53 m. Height 3.3 m. Ground clearance 320 mm. Range 640 km on 240 L of fuel. The drivetrain was Bedford standard, A a 4.9 L 300 cubic inch in-line six petrol engine, the same overhead valve unit that powered every RL ever built, driving a ZF four-speed manual through a transfer case to all four wheels at 110 brake horsepower.

150 Mark 1R vehicles were built for the South African police. The SADF took an upgraded variant, the Mark 1M, fitted with a higher grade armor steel called AR O Q Tuff. Total production across both marks landed at approximately 675 vehicles, but there was a second depot, and it mattered more than the first. Sometime between 1976 and 1978, drawing on parallel innovation by a Rhodesian engineer farmer named Walter Konschel, Joint Team built the Hippo Mark II.

This version dispensed with the Bedford chassis entirely. Bedford drivetrain components, axles, transfer case, engine, were housed inside an integrated monocoque vehicle hull. The hull was the chassis. Gert Pretorius, engineering director at BAE Systems Land Systems OMC, would later credit this design as the moment South African mine protected vehicle engineering left the truck chassis behind and entered an entirely new phase.

The Mark II was never mass produced. It did not need to be. It became the developmental stepping stone for the Caspir of 1980, the vehicle that has every reasonable claim to being the first true mine resistant ambush protected vehicle in history. It takes a second, costs nothing, and helps the channel grow. All right, let us look at the proof. The casualty data are extraordinary. Imperial College London surgeon A. Rule Ramasamy and his colleagues reconstructed 2,212 mine detonations from Rhodesian war records covering 16,456 vehicle occupants.

Occupants of mine protected vehicles on the vehicle lineage suffered a 1.2% fatality rate, 10 times safer than the unprotected vehicles they replaced. Camp and Heitman, Surviving the Ride, the definitive South African source, documented 533 separate mine detonations on SADF and SAP mine protected vehicles between January 1978 and March 1988.

Across all those incidents, many of them daisy-chained, 90 of them involving multiple mines, only 33 soldiers and policemen died. The Hippo’s most colorful operational chapter began in June 1979. Lieutenant General Sterk Hans Dreyer stood up a new South African police counterinsurgency unit modeled on the Rhodesian Selous Scouts.

Its Afrikaans nickname became infamous, Koevoet, crowbar. Its job was to track and kill PLAN insurgents in Ovamboland. When Koevoet was created, the unit possessed no vehicles aside from three Hippo armored personnel carriers. The mechanics promptly cut the roofs off them. The closed cabins were unbearable in the Ovamboland heat.

The high enclosed silhouette stripped crews of the situational awareness that good tracking demanded. Internal water tanks were welded in. Racks for FN machine guns and captured PKM rifles were bolted to the sides. On at least some of those three vehicles, heavier weapons including ZPU-2 anti-aircraft guns and 20 mm MG 151 cannon were mounted.

Those three open-topped Hippos of mid-1979 became the original fighting group doctrine that Koevoet would later perfect on the Casspir, a small, fast, heavily armed mine protected platform that did not try to deliver troops to a fight so much as become the fight itself. By the mid-1980s, this doctrine accounted for an estimated 80% of all SWAPO insurgents killed inside Southwest Africa.

Compare what the rest of the world was building in 1974. The American M113, fielded since 1960, had a flat aluminum box hull. A TM-46 detonating beneath it would, in the dispassionate Rhodesian phrase, trap the blast under that flat plate, thrust the vehicle upwards, and tear through the floor with what one assessment called drastic consequences.

The Soviet BTR-60 and BTR-70 were boat hulled, designed to swim across the Vistula, not to survive a Caprivi mine. The British Saracen and the West German TPZ Fuchs were both flat floored. The French VAB, fielded in 1976, was a flat bottomed boat hull. Not one of the major Cold War armored personnel carriers designed in the great industrial democracies of NATO or the Warsaw Pact had a V hull.

Cold War doctrine assumed European armored battle. The threat was anti-tank guided missiles, artillery, and tank guns. Armored personnel carriers were battle taxis. Drop the dismounts, withdraw. Heavy mine protection conflicted with mass production, amphibious capability, and air transport. The Joint Mine Warfare Committee in Pretoria saw a problem that its NATO equivalents could not see because the South Africans were facing a war NATO was not yet fighting.

Necessity was the mother of invention. Embargo, in this case, was its grandmother. The Hippo’s direct technical legacy in Southern Africa is easy enough to chart. The Mk 2’s monocoque in sight became, with refinement, the Buffalo of 1978. About 2,400 were built. The Mk 2 architecture went straight into the Casspir of 1980.

With an officially rated mine resistance of three TM-57 mines under a wheel and two under the hull, about 2,800 Casspirs were exported to militaries from Angola to India to Iraq. From the Casspir came the Mamba of 1995. From the Mamba came the RG-31 Nyala. From the RG-31 came the RG-33 of 2007. The corporate lineage carried the engineering.

The original design talent moved through Reunert OMC, then Vickers, then Alvis, and finally into BAE Systems Land Systems OMC at Benoni, east of Johannesburg. Then came Iraq. In 2003, American troops began dying from improvised explosive devices in numbers nobody in Washington had projected. The flat-floored Humvee was being shredded.

In February 2007, 65 mine resistant vehicles in Iraq were yielding casualty data so striking that Lieutenant General James Mattis told the Baltimore Sun that crews riding in V-hulled vehicles were several times more likely to survive a blast than the troops in armored Humvees. On the 8th of May, 2007, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates issued a directive making the mine resistant ambush protected program the highest priority acquisition in the Department of Defense.

By the program’s closure on the 1st of October 2012, the Pentagon had fielded 27,740 MRAP vehicles at a cost of approximately $48.5 billion, the fastest major Department of Defense acquisition since the Second World War. The vehicles came from five primary suppliers, and the South African fingerprints range from explicit to unmistakable.

The RG31 and RG33 were direct South African designs. According to military.com, the Cougar’s design traces back to the Olifant Manufacturing Company of South Africa, which had originally developed the V-shaped blast hull architecture for the South African military. The Buffalo, every American military source confirms, was designed based on the Casspir.

The hinge between these stories is one man. In 2004, Vernon Joynt left South Africa for Charleston, South Carolina, where he became chief scientist at Force Protection Incorporated. The man who designed the Hippo in 1974 designed the Cougar that saved American Marines’ lives in Anbar province in 2006.

By the time Robert Gates wrote his memoir Duty in 2014, he was telling reporters that mine resistant vehicles had proved roughly 10 times safer than Humvees in IED attacks. The number is almost exactly the same as the 10-fold ratio derived from Rhodesian data 30 years earlier. The same physics, the same outcome, learned twice. The Hippo’s life as an operational vehicle was short.

It entered service in 1974, peaked around 1978, and was largely supplanted by the Buffel and Casspir within 5 years. There is no thriving Hippo enthusiast scene, no coffee table book of glamour photography. It looked silly. The troops who rode in it did not love it. Even Heitman called it ungainly, yet the conceptual architecture of every modern mine-protected vehicle is visible in the Hippo.

The V-hull, the monocoque, the high ground clearance, the deliberate sacrifice of ride quality and silhouette to put physical distance and angle between human bodies and a buried explosive charge. When American Marines ride in Cougars today, they are riding inside an idea that South African engineers drew on paper in Pretoria more than 50 years ago, that an obsolete British Bedford truck carried into operational reality on the dirt roads of Ovamboland, and that the Pentagon spent $48 billion to relearn.

Bob Dylan understood influence and originality and the relationship between them better than almost anyone alive in 1986. Bob Dylan had spent 24 years thinking carefully and specifically about where music came from and where music was going and what it meant that those two things were always in constant conversation with each other.

Keith Richards was 42 years old in November of 1986. Keith Richards had been playing guitar professionally since 1962. Keith Richards had built a career on a foundation of American blues and rhythm and blues. A foundation that Keith Richards had studied with the systematic devotion of someone who understood that the tradition he was building on was not incidental to the music he was making, but essential to it.

that you could not understand what Keith Richards did without understanding where Keith Richards had come from and what Keith Richards had been listening to since he was a teenager in Dartford with American Import Records and a secondhand guitar and no teacher except the recordings themselves. Keith Richards had never pretended otherwise. Keith Richards had in fact spent considerable energy across his career making the lineage explicit, naming the artists, citing the recordings, insisting on the acknowledgement of influence that the mainstream music

industry had a long history of suppressing or ignoring or crediting to the wrong people. If anything, Keith Richards was more transparent about his sources than most musicians of his generation. Keith Richards had always said openly that the Rolling Stones came directly from the blues, that Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson and the specific tradition of the Mississippi Delta were not background influences, but foundational ones.

The music Keith Richards made was in direct and sustained conversation with that tradition, something Keith Richards considered not a limitation, but a responsibility and a form of respect. The interview had been running for 8 minutes when the host asked Bob Dylan about the current state of rock and roll.
