It rewards whichever side better understands how the enemy processes evidence into belief. The Germans had superior tanks in several respects. The Panzer 3 and a four carried better optics and in some marks comparable or superior guns to early war Allied armor. and Raml’s forces had repeatedly humiliated British armor in maneuver warfare through 1941 and early 1942.
None of that mattered on the night of October 23rd because the fight wasn’t decided by tank versus tank engagement in that critical opening phase. What made Operation Bird from work wasn’t any single clever trick, but the compounding of dozens of small, mutually reinforcing lies sustained over weeks. fake tanks, fake pipelines, fake artillery flashes, fake vehicle tracks, real tanks disguised as trucks, and a deception staff patient enough to let the story build gradually rather than reveal itself all at once.
