The British Listener Who Decoded a Single “Cough” — And Exposed Hitler’s Last Wolfpack D
It is a few minutes. It is a few minutes past 11:00 at night on the 15th of April, 1945. And in a wooden hut on Forest Moor, a wind-scoured plateau above Harrogate in Yorkshire, WREN telegraphist Barbara Cresswell presses her headphones tighter against her ears. The valve set in front of her hums at a pitch she has learned to feel in her teeth.
Rain ticks against the blackout boards. Her tea, poured 2 hours ago, has gone cold in its enamel mug. And a pencil stub lies balanced across an open logbook whose pages are dense with call signs, frequencies, and timings. She is listening to a German naval circuit she has followed on and off for 3 weeks.
And at 11:04, the carrier wave opens a half second before the operator begins to key. In that half second before the Morse starts, something else comes through. A short, double-stage cough, dry and rasping, cut off as though the man clearing his throat has remembered his microphone is live. Barbara has heard it four times now.
She writes the time in the margin, underlines it twice, and reaches for the log page from 6 days earlier, where the same mark sits beside a different call sign altogether. 3,000 miles to the west in the black Atlantic night east of the Azores, sailors aboard two American destroyer escorts are watching radar screens for a target neither of them has seen yet.
Neither Barbara nor the young men on watch aboard USS Stanton and USS Frost know it, but within hours their nights will be joined by the same wireless circuit she has just marked in pencil. By the spring of 1945, the U-boat war that had defined the Battle of the Atlantic for 5 and 1/2 years was ending in home waters.
German losses in the coastal shipping lanes around Britain had grown so severe that by late March, the Kriegsmarine had been forced to break off large-scale operations there altogether. Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz, who had commanded the U-boat arm since 1936 and now led the entire German Navy, needed a way to draw Allied hunting forces away from those waters, even as Germany’s war collapsed around him.
The answer, decided in Berlin, was to send a group of ocean-going boats directly at the coast of the United States. A gamble aimed less at winning the Battle of the Atlantic than at prolonging it by a few desperate weeks. Nine Type IX U-boats, long-range vessels built for distant patrols, left their bases in occupied Norway beginning on the 14th of March, 1945.
Each had been fitted with a snorkel, a breathing tube that let the diesel engines run whilst the boat remained submerged. A technology that had transformed how U-boats could survive against Allied aircraft. On April 12th, seven of these boats were formally grouped under the code name Großer Seewolf and ordered south toward New York and the shipping lanes beyond it.
The remaining two were sent to patrol off Canada. The Allies already knew they were coming. British code breakers at Bletchley Park had been reading German naval Enigma traffic since 1941 and in early March 1945, decrypted signals revealed the outline of the plan before the first boat had even sailed.
What the decrypts did not settle was a fear that had been building in Washington for months, that Germany intended to fit U-boats with V-1 flying bombs or even V-2 rockets and launch them at American cities from just off the coast. British intelligence and much of the American command besides thought the idea implausible.
Admiral Jonas Ingram, commanding the US Atlantic Fleet among, was not willing to gamble on that judgment. He assembled two large anti-submarine barrier forces built around escort carriers and destroyer escorts and gave the operation a code name that captured the mood in Washington that spring. Operation Teardrop.
It was into this picture that stations like Forest Moor fed a second quieter stream of intelligence. Enigma decrypts told London and Washington where Gruppe Seewolf’s boats had been ordered to go. They did not by themselves tell listeners which individual boat was transmitting at any given moment, particularly once operators began varying their call signs to frustrate direction finding.
That gap was where traffic analysts and Y service listeners like Barbara Cresswell did their work, matching not the content of a signal, but its shape, the rhythm of a hand on a Morse key, the timing of a transmission, and on this particular circuit, a sound that had nothing whatsoever to do with code breaking.
Barbara had first logged the cough on 25th March, 10 days into the Seewolf boats voyage west, on a frequency the Admiralty’s operational intelligence center had flagged as likely German naval traffic crossing the Atlantic. At that point nobody at Forestmore knew which boat it belonged to. U-boat wireless operators identified themselves only by changing call signs, precisely so that listeners like her could not build a simple picture of one boat’s movements over time.
What they could not disguise so easily was habit. The same operator tended to open his in London at the operational In London at the operational intelligence center, the contrast was of a different kind entirely. Analysts working through decrypted Enigma traffic and stacks of direction finding reports from stations scattered across Britain, assembling a picture of German intentions from the safety of a basement room, whilst men on both sides of the ocean carried the practical risk of that picture being right or wrong. The Royal Canadian Air Force flew supporting patrols out over the Grand Banks, adding another layer of eyes to a search area that stretched across hundreds of miles of open Atlantic. And in Washington, Admiral Ingram and the staff of the newly formed 10th Fleet weighed intelligence assessments against the political cost of being caught unprepared if Germany’s rocket claims turned out to be true. A fear British analysts largely dismissed, but American commanders felt they could not simply set aside.
What united all these very different vantage points, from a WRNS hut on a Yorkshire moor to a destroyer escort’s bridge in mid-Atlantic fog, was that none of them, on their own, could see the whole of Gruppe Seewolf’s picture. Enigma decrypts gave orders without always confirming which boat had received them.
Direction finding gave bearings without names. Sonar and radar gave contacts without histories. It was only when these fragments were laid alongside one another, amongst analysts in London and in Washington, that the outline of seven boats converging on the American coast became something ships at sea could actually act upon.

She attacked immediately with a Hedgehog mortar, but the target dived and the first salvo missed. Stanton held sonar contact with help from USS Frost, and at 033 on April 16th, a third Hedgehog attack tore into the hull of U-1235, sinking her with the loss of her entire crew. 40 minutes later, and barely more than a mile from that spot, Frost picked up a fresh radar contact, U-880, attempting to flee on the surface under cover of darkness.
Frost closed to 650 yards, lit the submarine with star shell and searchlights, and opened fire with 40-mm guns at 209. U-880 crash dived, but Stanton and Frost tracked her on sonar for nearly 2 more hours. And at 4:04, a final hedgehog pattern sent her down with no survivors. Two boats destroyed within 4 hours, each in a violent underwater explosion, did nothing to calm American fears that Group A Seewolf might be carrying the rocket weapons Washington dreaded.
If anything, the scale of the blast was read by some officers as evidence that something more than conventional torpedoes had gone up. The first barrier force pressed the search harder, working its patrol line southwestward, as intelligence updates from London continued to narrow the area in which the surviving boats were thought to be operating.
At Forest Moor, Barbara Cresswell’s private page of cough entries now carried a question mark beside the two most recent fixes. She could not yet know, and would not learn for some time, whether either lost boat had been the one she had been tracking, or whether her operator was among the five that remained.
The remaining boats scattered their scouting lines further, and for nearly a week the hunt slowed as fog closed over much of the operating area, cutting flying hours for the American carriers to a fraction of what their commanders had planned. Destroyer escorts stood long, cold watches on barrier patrol with little to show for it beyond fuel burned and men exhausted.
Whilst in London, the operational intelligence center kept building its picture from whatever traffic Y stations could still pull out of the static. It was a reminder, familiar by 1945, to everyone still fighting the Battle of the Atlantic, that intelligence rarely delivered its answers all at once. It accumulated fragment by fragment, faster on some days than others, until enough of it pointed the same direction to be worth acting upon.
The hunt’s focus sharpened abruptly on the morning of April the 24th. East of the barrier line, the destroyer escorts USS Frederick C. Davis and USS Heiter had gained sonar contact on a submerged target and turned to engage only to lose it as they closed. When Davis regained contact, the U-boat had already anticipated the maneuver.
At 8:39 that morning an acoustic torpedo fired by U-546 struck Davis on her port side tearing through the forward engine room. She sank within minutes becoming the last United States Navy warship lost to a U-boat in the Atlantic. It was this loss more than any other single event of Operation Teardrop that turned the Second Barrier Force’s search into something closer.
