The American Trick That Made P-61 Black Widows Deadlier Against Japanese Bombers in Just Minutes D

June 30th, 1944. Somewhere over Saipan at roughly 17,000 ft in total darkness, a 35-ft long 20,000-lb twin-engine fighter is closing on a target its pilot cannot see with his own eyes. Lieutenant Dale Haberman is flying blind, trusting a green radar scope and the voice of his radar operator, Lieutenant Robert Mooney, in the seat behind him.

The target ahead is a Mitsubishi G4M Betty bomber on its way to drop nuisance bombs on the American Marines who had stormed ashore just 9 days earlier. On paper, hunting an enemy in pitch blackness over open ocean with 1944-era electronics should have been a losing bet. Yet, in the next 90 seconds, the P-61 Black Widow would score the first confirmed aerial kill of its kind in the Pacific theater, and it would do so by closing to under 700 ft before firing a shot. This shouldn’t have worked.

Night interception in 1944 was still closer to guesswork than science, and the aircraft the US Army Air Forces had thrown at the problem before the Black Widow, a converted A-20 bomber called the P-70, had already failed badly at it. But the Black Widow’s apparent disadvantages, its size, its weight, its need to close to night fighting range, turned out to be exactly what led American crews turn a single kill into the collapse of an entire enemy formation in a matter of minutes.

Standard military thinking, both American and Japanese, held that speed and altitude decided air combat, and by that measure the Black Widow looked like a joke. It weighed roughly 20,000 lb empty, more than twice what a Japanese Zero weighed fully loaded, and it needed crew, pilot, radar operator, and gunner just to do the job a single-seat day fighter did alone.

Top speed sat around 366 mph, respectable but far from spectacular for 1944. Against a fast, maneuverable Japanese fighter in daylight, none of that would have mattered. But daylight was never where this aircraft was meant to fight. Japanese bomber crews had built their entire night time tactic around that assumption.

Flying single Betty bombers or small loose formations at high altitude in full darkness. They counted on the same cover that had let them roam over American-held islands for years since no Allied fighter could see them and no fighter pilot could hold a bomber in his gunsight long enough to hit it. Standard military thinking on the American side, at least early on, wasn’t much better.

The P-70 had been rushed into the role using ground-based SCR-270 early warning radar that could only give a target’s direction, not its altitude, leaving pilots and controllers to guess where to point a fighter in the dark. The secret was in what the Black Widow carried in its nose. Northrop built the P-61 from the ground up around an American radar set, the SCR-720, rather than bolting a radar onto an existing airframe as an afterthought.

That distinction mattered enormously. The ground-based SCR-270 sets that had guided the failed P-70 could only tell a controller a bomber’s direction, never its height, which meant fighters were routinely vectored into the wrong altitude band entirely and never got a visual, let alone a firing solution.

The airborne SCR-720 solved that problem inside the cockpit itself. It gave the radar operator both bearing and range to a target, updating continuously as the fighter closed. And just as importantly, it proved resistant to a countermeasure the Japanese would soon try. When Japanese bombers began dropping chaff, strips of metal foil meant to blind radar, at around 30 mi out, the older ground-based sets got swamped with false echoes.

The SCR-720 aboard the Black Widow, once it had already locked onto a contact, burned straight through the interference. The bomber crews had built their defense around fooling on the ground. They hadn’t planned for a machine that flew. What actually mattered wasn’t raw horsepower or the plane’s 20,000 lb weight, features that on paper looked like liabilities for a fighter.

It was that weight and size that gave the Black Widow the stability to fly a slow, patient radar intercept in total darkness without the airframe shaking apart and gave it the fuel endurance to loiter for hours over the vast distances of the Central Pacific, waiting for a single contact.

A lighter, faster day fighter simply couldn’t do that job. The P-61’s armament reinforced the pattern. Four 20-mm Hispano cannons in the belly, backed in early production models by a dorsal turret with four .50 caliber machine guns. That was firepower built for a fighter meant to make one attack run count, not to dogfight at range.

Later B-model production stretched the nose to fit an improved radar set and dropped the troublesome dorsal turret from many airframes entirely. The change made not because the extra guns weren’t useful, but because the turret’s aerodynamic buffeting outweighed its benefit.

On the night of June 30th, Haberman and Mooney’s radar operator held the contact through the chaff, guided the fighter to within roughly 700 ft astern of the Betty at 17,000 ft, and only then gave the order to open fire. The four cannons tore through the bomber’s fuselage in seconds, caught fire, nosed over, and went straight into the ocean.

That close-range doctrine, wait until you cannot miss, then unload everything at once, became standard practice and it produced an effect Japanese planners hadn’t accounted for at all. Crews of the 6th Night Fighter Squadron discovered that when they killed the lead bomber in a Japanese formation, the remaining aircraft did not press on.

They jettisoned their bomb loads and turned for home, often within minutes of watching their leader go down. The tactic built around darkness as protection collapsed the moment darkness stopped being a shield. The Black Widow’s crews weren’t only fighting the Japanese in isolation, either. Detachments of night fighter squadrons had already tested the same close-range radar-guided doctrine against German bombers over Italy in late 1943, escorting Allied convoys during the advance up the peninsula. The Luftwaffe fought at night with entirely different habits than the Japanese did, relying on electronic countermeasures and organized bomber streams rather than lone nuisance raiders, and American crews carried the lessons from both theaters back and forth. American forces there paired the fighters with the AN/TPS-10 Lil Abner, a 3-cm microwave height-finding radar immune to the chaff that still blinded older metric wavelength sets. Crews worked out a firm engagement rule. If a Black Widow hadn’t closed the kill inside 10 mi, it broke off and let the island’s anti-aircraft batteries finish the job, rather than risk a friendly fire accident in the dark.

After May 1945, Japanese night raids against Iwo Jima fell off sharply enough that two entire night fighter squadrons, the 548th and 549th, were reassigned from bomber interception to offensive intruder missions against Japanese airfields in the Bonin Islands. The hunters had run out of prey to hunt.

None of this happened instantly. The 6th Night Fighter Squadron had arrived on Saipan on June 24th, 1944, just 9 days after the Marine landings, and lost two aircraft and their crews to a landing accident on their very first night in theater, leaving only five Black Widows operational before they’d fired a shot at the enemy.

The first probable kill came on June 27th. The first confirmed kill came three nights later. In a single week, a squadron that had arrived with barely half its aircraft intact had already begun rewriting how the Pacific War’s night skies worked. The radar and the cannons only mattered because exhausted undermanned crews kept flying the same patient close-range intercept night after night until the pattern held often enough to be called a doctrine. Critics of the design, and there were plenty inside the Army Air Forces before the P-61 ever reached combat, argued that a two-engine, three-man aircraft weighing over 10 tons had no business being called a fighter at all.

They were right that it could never turn with a Japanese Zero or an Oscar in daylight. They were wrong about what a night fighter actually needed to do. This wasn’t a fast, nimble interceptor that happened to carry radar. It was a stable radar platform that happened to carry cannons. And in the specific job of finding one bomber in an ocean of darkness and killing it before it could react, that distinction was everything.

This wasn’t accidental engineering, and it wasn’t blind luck that the close-in, kill-the-leader approach worked as well as it did. Commanders and crews had learned through the P-70’s failures and the P-61’s early missions that the psychological weight of a night bombing raid depended entirely on the crews believing they were unseen.

They were making a rational decision based on incomplete information, because for most of the war, an American fighter finding them at night at all had been close to impossible. And once air crews understood their formation leader could be picked off from behind without warning, there was no tactic left that restored the advantage darkness used to give them.

That’s also why the closing tactic mattered as much as the radar itself. A Black Widow that fired from long range risked only wounding a bomber, letting it limp home with its formation intact and its crew reporting exactly what had happened. A Black Widow that closed to under a thousand feet before firing, the way Haberman and Mooney did over Saipan, guaranteed a kill decisive enough that nearby aircraft saw fire in the sky and made an immediate decision to abort.

Ground crews and squadron intelligence officers began noting the pattern in after action reports. Formations broken up within minutes of a single loss, bomb loads found jettisoned along the flight path the next morning, no second wave following the first. What looked in pre-war testing and doctrine manuals like an unacceptably risky attack profile turned out in the actual chaos of combat over the Pacific to be the single most efficient way to neutralize an entire raid using only one kill.

By the war’s final weeks, the pattern had become so consistent that P-61 crews were still flying it after the fighting was officially supposed to be over. On the night of August 14th and 15th, 1945, hours after Japan’s surrender but before every unit had received word, a Black Widow named Lady in the Dark forced down a Nakajima Ki-43 Oscar without firing a shot.

The same radar-guided patience that had defined the type’s entire combat career still working on the very last night it was needed.
