But every one of those seven surprises came from a machine the Germans had written off before it fired a shot.

The Valentine was never meant to dazzle anyone. It was meant to survive, to keep running, to keep its crew alive through one more day of desert or one more Soviet winter. And it did that with a stubbornness no recognition chart had prepared the Vermach to expect. The seventh thing was the biggest, and it was less about the tank than about what the tank exposed.

German assessments of Allied armor through 1940 and 1941 had rested on a simple industrial logic. Bigger factories, bigger tanks, better tanks, and the Valentine’s whole career argued against it. Vickers built more than 8,000 of them, cheap, riveted, unglamorous. And every single one of the surprises above traced back to a design philosophy the German general staff had never taken seriously.
