If the neck shifted just a few centimeters, the blade might not strike the intended point. By locking the head firmly in place, the lunette ensured the blade always hit exactly where it was designed to. Success depended heavily on the executioner’s skill and the prisoner’s ability to remain still. History records many botched executions where multiple blows were needed because the condemned moved or the executioner missed. Its inventors wanted a machine that would produce the same result every time, regardless of the prisoner’s size, strength, or behavior. The lunette was a vital part of achieving that goal. The position of the neck was also important because of the guillotine’s angled blade. The lunette ensured that alignment from the moment it was locked until the blade fell seconds later. The locking mechanism also protected the executioners and their assistants. Before the guillotine, assistants often had to physically restrain prisoners while an executioner prepared to swing a sword or axe. This was dangerous if the condemned struggled.

With the guillotine, once the neck was secured inside it, everyone could step away safely before the blade was released. The lunette reflected the wider purpose behind the guillotine itself. Introduced in France in 1792, the machine was intended to provide a faster and more consistent method of execution than the sword, axe, or gallows.

While the guillotine later became a symbol of the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror, its design is believed that a swift mechanical execution was more humane than older methods often went badly wrong. Remarkably, the design of the lunette changed very little over the next two centuries of use. Whether executions took place during the French Revolution, under Napoleon, or in the 20th century, the same basic two-piece wooden collar continued to hold the prisoner’s neck in place before the blade was released.

Even France’s final execution on the guillotine, carried out in 1977, used exactly the same principle and equipment. Today’s surviving guillotines displayed in museums clearly show the lunette as one of the machine’s defining features. Although the blade usually attracts the most attention, it was a simple wooden collar that made the guillotine work as intended.

By locking the victim’s head firmly into position, it prevented movement, ensured the blade struck accurately, reduced the risk of a botched execution, and transformed the guillotine into one of the most efficient and also infamous execution devices in history.
