The Most TERRIFYING Grenade Launcher of Vietnam You’ve Never Heard Of JJ

A SEAL squad moves through flooded rice paddies in the dark, deep enough into contested territory that extraction is a long way off if anything goes wrong. It goes wrong. Muzzle flashes open up from a tree line and there’s no time to think through a firing sequence. There’s only time to react.

One operator shoulders a stubby aluminum weapon that looks almost like a sawed-off shotgun and starts working the pump. 4 40-mm high explosive grenades leave the barrel faster than a single shot launcher could have been reloaded even once. Each pump feeds the next round almost as fast as he can cycle his arm and the explosions walk across the tree line one after another before the enemy has any chance to reload, relocate, or even register what’s hitting them.

Nobody else in the platoon is carrying anything [music] like it. It was never given an official designation. It was never formally adopted by the Department of Defense. Never assigned an M number the way the M79 or M203 were. Never issued through any supply chain a rifleman would recognize. Barely two dozen were ever assembled, put together by hand at a Navy research base in the middle of the California desert and handed almost entirely to one branch of American special operations.

Most people who spent years studying Vietnam era small arms couldn’t tell you it existed. The men who carried it into the war’s most dangerous missions knew it simply as the China Lake after the base behind it because nobody ever gave it anything more official to go by. By the mid-1960s, American grenadiers in Vietnam had a real firepower problem and it hit the smallest, most exposed units hardest.

The M79 grenade launcher had earned genuine respect since it entered service. It was reliable and it dropped a 40-mm high explosive round exactly [music] where a rifle couldn’t reach. The troops called it the thumper or the blooper after the hollow sound it made lobbing a grenade out past anything a rifleman could throw. But, if fired one shot, then the operator had to break the action open, pull the spent shell, seat a fresh one, and snap it shut before he could fire again.

On paper, the M79 filled a genuine gap reaching past the farthest a man might throw a hand grenade and stopping short of where a mortar took over. In a running gunfight, though, its one-shot rhythm left a grenadier badly out of step. For a regular infantry squad, that trade-off was usually livable. A dozen rifles could keep an enemy’s head down while one man reloaded.

For a six- or eight-man SEAL team out on its own, deep in enemy country, with nobody nearby to cover that reload under fire, one shot followed by several exposed seconds might be the whole difference between breaking contact and not coming home. A grenadier got a single 40-mm round to make it count. Then, for the three or four seconds it took to reload, he was effectively a spectator right when a small team needed every gun in the fight.

The military had already taken swings at the bigger problem, though each attempt chased a different piece of it. In the late 1950s, Springfield Armory produced the T148 E1, a repeater that fed 40-mm rounds from a harmonica-style clip sliding across the action. Nobody had come closer to true multi-shot grenade fire, but the exposed clip fouled easily.

Reloading it once the clip ran dry was slow and clumsy. And the handful that reached Vietnam struck crews as fragile and awkward in the wet, filthy conditions that mattered most. Colt’s later XM148 went a different way. It was a single-shot launcher that clamped under an M-16’s barrel, so a grenadier could keep a rifle in his hands.

That fixed something real, but it was still one round at a time. And it’s exposed trigger linkage proved fragile and unsafe enough that the Army pulled it from combat in 1967. Two very different answers, and neither one put a repeating launcher a SEAL could trust into the hands of the men most likely to need a second shot right now.

SEAL teams had watched the Army’s program stall for years. And betting their lives on whatever launcher came next had stopped looking like a plan. So, the SEALs went to the source. The Naval Weapons Center at China Lake sat out in the Mojave Desert, roughly 150 mi north of Los Angeles. And in 1967, it took on the challenge.

China Lake had a reputation for precisely this kind of work. This was the base that had birthed the Sidewinder missile, staffed by engineers who were used to cracking hard problems fast and well outside the usual red tape. The launcher project fell to a special projects team, and the design is credited to an engineer named Alfred F. Kermode.

Rather than chase a complex automatic or semi-automatic mechanism, the way the earlier programs had, Kermode’s people reached for one of the most proven actions in the history of firearms and scaled it up. The pump-action shotgun. A mechanism generations of hunters and lawmen had already trusted with their lives, long before anyone thought to point it at a 40-mm grenade.

What came out of that shop was compact and aluminum-bodied, with a tubular magazine holding three 40-mm grenades and a fourth in the [music] chamber. Four ready shots before a reload. Rounds loaded through the bottom into the tube beneath the barrel, the same place a shotgunner thumbs in shells. And working the pump kicked out the spent case and chambered the next one.

Fast, simple, and instantly familiar to any American who had ever handled a shotgun, with nothing new to learn but the size of the shell going in. A skilled operator really could send all four grenades downrange before the first one landed. A volume of fire that would take an M79 gunner most of a firefight to match, one slow reload at a time.

For men who had grown up with pump shotguns in duck blinds and squad cars, the learning curve barely existed. Hand a SEAL the China Lake, and he already knew in his hands how to run it. The pump action carried a quieter advantage, too. Very little can go wrong with it. >> [music] >> There’s no gas system to foul, no self-loading mechanism to jam, nothing that has to cycle under its own power in mud, silt, or paddy water.

For a weapon you expected to drag through that kind of filth and still fire, that ruggedness was the entire point of the choice. Construction mattered as much as the mechanism. [music] Cast largely from aluminum instead of steel, the China Lake came in around 8 lb [music] empty. That put it a touch heavier than an unloaded M79, but the M79 fired once.

For a shoulder weapon carrying four ready rounds, 8 lb was remarkably little. And it handed one man four times the immediate firepower for barely more than the weight of a loaded M79. To match four fast rounds any other way, a team would have needed four M79s and four men to fire them. One China Lake and one grenadier did the same job.

The launcher kept the M79’s leaf sight, marked in 25 m steps out to about 400. So, a grenadier moving over from the standard weapon had nothing to relearn. That counted for a lot. A gun a SEAL could pick up and run with, no training pipeline required, could go out on the next operation and be trusted to behave the way its operator expected.

The China Lake never came close to mass production, and that scarcity is a big part of why so few people have heard of it. Kevin Dockery, a historian who dug through Navy SEAL weapons and combat records, counted 22 completed launchers on the books. Other estimates run a little higher, into the 20s or low 30s, but every account agrees the number was tiny.

It was small enough that you could track nearly every unit individually, which almost never happens with a weapon that actually saw combat. >> [music] >> For perspective, Colt turned out something like 28,000 XM148s. China Lake produced 22. That gap tells you almost everything about what this launcher was and wasn’t meant to be.

Nearly all of them went to Navy SEAL teams. A small number reportedly reached Army 5th Special Forces Group operators and Marine Force Reconnaissance units running their own high-risk work. By around the middle of 1968, the launcher was combat-ready, and a SEAL team history later called it a good weapon in the hands of detachments in Vietnam.

It went where the SEALs went, above all into the flooded close country of the Mekong Delta, where a fight could erupt at point-blank range and finish in under a minute, long before artillery or air support could ever weigh in. This was the SEALs’ whole world in Vietnam. Brief, violent contacts on someone else’s ground, where the team that put out the most fire in the first 10 [music] seconds usually walked away.

A weapon that front-loaded firepower fit that world perfectly. It let a tiny element hit like a much larger one for the few seconds that decided the outcome, then melt back into the dark. That is where it earned its keep. In the opening seconds of a firefight, when a SEAL element sprang an ambush or got bounced into [music] one, a single man could throw as much explosive weight down range as a whole section of grenadiers, then hold the pressure on while the rest of the team maneuvered or fell back toward the water. A single

40-mm high explosive round would clear a bunker, swamp a sandpan, or shred a tree line full of muzzle flashes. Four of them walked across a position in a couple of seconds would smother an ambush before it ever grew into a real fight. Fed the high explosive fragmentation rounds it was designed around, the launcher did exactly what the SEALs had asked for.

Sent to Vietnam for field evaluation, it came back with a strong report on HE ammunition. All of that fed straight into how SEAL teams were meant to work. Small, quiet, fast. Every extra man meant more noise, more chance of being spotted, a bigger footprint on the ground. One grenadier with a China Lake put out the firepower of several men, which let the rest of the team stay lean.

On the deep penetration missions the SEALs specialized in, staying lean was often the line between a mission that stayed secret and one that got blown. It wasn’t flawless. Field accounts note it wouldn’t reliably feed the flatter-nosed buckshot cartridge, whose blunt shape didn’t cycle cleanly through a magazine tube shaped around the tapered profile of an HE round.

So, the four-shot capacity that made it so dangerous was best kept loaded with the high explosive rounds it was designed for. And operators learned not to treat it as an answer to every kind of engagement. For the one job it existed to do though, it delivered. Putting several explosive rounds on a dug-in or distant target faster than any launcher America had ever fielded.

That was what the SEALs had gone looking for when the earlier programs left them short. And the men who used it didn’t want to give it back. In a war full of temperamental new gear, here was a gun that worked the way it was supposed to every time they racked the pump. The China Lake was never going to be standard issue, and that was locked in from the start.

Technicians hand-assembled it [music] at a research shop, rather than running it down a production line meant for scale. And because no service ever formally adopted it, the launcher never picked up an M number or any other official name. The SEALs just called it after the base, and that was that. In practice, the whole thing was a workaround, put together outside normal procurement precisely because procurement moved too slowly for men who needed an answer now.

That was the trade at the heart of it. A handful of operators got the exact weapon they needed years faster than the system could ever have delivered it. And in return, the launcher stayed an orphan with no program, no budget line, and no future past the war it served. That informal status was also its ceiling.

While the China Lake solved the reload problem for a few SEAL teams, the wider military was already moving toward a standardized answer of its own. The underbarrel M203. In time, it gave ordinary rifle squads across the Army and Marine Corps a launcher mounted right beneath the barrel instead of a separate weapon a dedicated grenadier had to haul around.

The Army combat-evaluated the XM203 in Southeast Asia in 1969. And SEAL Team 2 records show the unit taking delivery of 10 of them by 1970. Operators who might once have reached for a China Lake were now folding into the standard system like everyone else. The M203 couldn’t match four shots before a reload, but it cracked the underlying problem at a scale the China Lake was never meant to reach, letting a squad’s designated grenadier keep his rifle while carrying a single-shot launcher below it.

All of it backed by a supply chain that could produce, issue, and support it force-wide. Once that answer existed, a hand-assembled [music] 22-unit weapon with no official name had where left to go. It had settled an urgent, narrow question for the men who asked it. The rest of the military settled a broader one for everyone [music] else.

Only a handful of original China Lakes are known to survive, scattered across museum collections rather than any armory. Serial number four is on display at the National Navy UDT Seal Museum in Fort Pierce, Florida. Serial number 13 wound up in the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City, on the far side of the war it was intended for.

A few more reportedly held in Navy historical collections, though public inventories don’t fully agree on how many originals are left or where each one sits. That’s a smaller surviving fleet than some collectors have assembled for far more common guns, and it says everything about how few ever existed. Historians can name the museum holding nearly every known survivor, which almost never happens with a weapon that saw real combat.

The design didn’t vanish from memory, either. In the 1990s, engineers produced a single prototype follow-on called the EX-41, working from the original concept. It was a separate design drawn up two decades later, and it shouldn’t be confused with the wartime launcher. It never got past that one unit or saw any service.

Later, small commercial makers turned out limited runs of faithful reproductions for collectors and historians who wanted a piece of a weapon official history had mostly skipped over. Priced for people who already knew exactly what they were looking at. A faithful copy can run into the thousands of dollars and buyers line up anyway, which is its own strange tribute to a gun the Pentagon never even bothered to name.

Among a certain kind of firearms enthusiast, the China Lake has quietly become a cult object. A piece of hardware whose very obscurity is a big part of the appeal. That a design produced in the low dozens, never officially adopted, never mass-produced, and retired decades ago from the one unit that carried it, is still worth reproducing by hand, says something real about the ingenuity poured into it.

All of it aimed at one narrow problem for one specific group of men who needed it solved now, not eventually. None of that was ever meant to reshape America’s small arms inventory. The China Lake wasn’t designed for that. It was designed to answer for a handful of SEAL platoons in 1967 what the earlier launcher programs never had, a way to put more than one round on target before an enemy who had just taken the first hit could recover.

For a few critical years in the worst terrain and the toughest fights of the war, it did precisely that. Historians can file it among the rarest weapons America ever took into combat. The men who actually carried it never needed a serial number or a survey to know what it was worth to them.
