With nowhere to live with her children, the widow cared for an elderly woman—and received an unexpected inheritance.
Having nowhere to live with her children, the widow took care of an elderly woman [music] and received an unexpected inheritance. Marta Alves never imagined that the worst day of her life would begin in such an ordinary way. She woke up before 6 a.m., as she had done for many years. She made coffee using the remaining grounds from the package and looked around the small kitchen of the apartment where she lived with her children, Lucas, 9, and Clara, 7.
The refrigerator contained little food, but she could still put together a simple breakfast. While spreading butter on two pieces of bread, [music] watched the children sleeping on the mattress they shared in the next room. She did everything she could to hide from them the extent of her worry. [music] Since her husband had died in a motorcycle accident three years earlier, [music] Marta had been facing life practically alone.
She worked as a cook in restaurants, snack bars, and small businesses, always accepting any opportunity that came her way. [music] He was never ashamed to work. The problem was that in recent months the restaurant where she was employed had started losing customers. The owner tried to keep the employees, but there came a point when he could no longer afford to pay the entire staff.
That morning, Marta still believed it would be just another day. She picked up her bag, kissed the children, and asked them to wait until the neighbor arrived to take them to school. Before leaving, Lucas asked if she would be back soon. Marta smiled and replied that she would do her best. [music] She always said that, even when she wasn’t sure about anything.
Upon arriving at the restaurant, he noticed a different kind of silence. His colleagues avoided conversation, and the owner stood near the cash register, looking at some papers. All he had to do was call Marta by her name for her to understand what was going to happen. With tired eyes, he explained that the restaurant would be closing its doors permanently that week.
[music] He apologized, said he didn’t have the money to pay all the fees at that moment, and promised to settle everything as soon as he sold some equipment. Marta listened to every word, trying to remain composed, thanked them for the opportunity, picked up her few belongings from the closet, and left without complaining.
As soon as he closed the door, he sat on a bench by the sidewalk and watched the street activity. For the first time since her husband’s death, she felt genuine fear. She was already three months behind on her rent. The owner had been demanding payment every day and had warned that his patience had run out. Even so, Marta walked for hours looking for a job.
He went into bakeries, markets, small restaurants, and hotels. [music] Everywhere I went I received practically the same response. There were no vacancies or they were asking for experience in different areas. As the sun began to set, he returned home trying to think of a solution. As soon as he arrived at the building, he found the owner waiting at the entrance.
[music] The man was holding some documents in his hands and seemed determined. [music] He explained that he had been trying to help her for months, but he also needed to collect the rent to pay his own bills. Marta asked for a few more days. He said he had just lost his job and that he would find another one quickly. The man lowered his head for a few seconds, but replied that the eviction order had already been issued and he couldn’t go back on it .
She entered the apartment, trying to hold back tears. Lucas immediately realized that something was wrong. Clara ran to hug her, asking if she was sick. Marta replied that no, she was just tired. That night, almost no one was able to sleep. Marta was doing calculations in an old notebook, trying to imagine how she would pay off so many debts without a salary.
The following morning, he continued looking for work, but returned home without any positive responses. The days passed quickly and the situation only worsened. The food has almost completely run out. Some neighbors helped by bringing rice, beans, or milk for the children. But Marta felt ashamed of depending on the goodwill of others.
Even so, she accepted it because she knew that Lucas and Clara were not to blame for anything. [music] Then, the day she feared most arrived. Right after breakfast, there was a knock at the door. The bailiff delivered the documents and informed her that she needed to vacate the property that same day. Marta tried to talk to her, explaining that she was still looking for a job, but there was nothing more she could do.
[music] The owner waited outside while she gathered the family’s belongings. The apartment was small, but it held all the remaining memories of her husband. She had to choose what would fit into just two suitcases: some clothes, documents, photographs, the children’s favorite toys, and a few family mementos. The rest were left behind.
Lucas was carrying a backpack on his back, trying to appear strong. Clara was holding a rather worn-out teddy bear and asking where they were going. Marta kept saying that they would find a safe place. When the door closed for the last time, she took a deep breath and picked up a suitcase in each hand.

The children walked beside him, not fully understanding what was happening. They spent hours walking around the city. Marta thought about looking for a public shelter, [music] but all the ones she knew were full. He also had no close relatives. [music] Her mother had passed away a few years earlier and her father had never been involved in her [music] life.
Those few who knew them faced similar difficulties and lived in houses that were too small to accommodate three more people. The money left in his wallet would barely be enough to buy a simple meal. In the late afternoon, the three went into a church just to rest for a while. The place was almost empty. Some people were saying their prayers while others arranged chairs for a meeting that would take place later.
Marta sat on a bench, lowered her head, and tried to find the strength to continue. Lucas gazed at the stained glass windows [music] and Clara silently hugged the teddy bear. After a few minutes, [music] Marta got up to get a drink of water and noticed a mural full of papers held together with thumbtacks.
There were announcements for courses, job openings, [music], clothing donations, and small services. A handwritten piece of paper caught his attention. [music] The lyrics were simple and a little shaky. The ad stated that an elderly lady was looking for someone to live in her home, offering food and lodging in exchange for companionship and help with daily care .
There was an address and a phone number. Marta read it several times to make sure she wasn’t misunderstanding. It seemed too good to be true. He thought it might be some kind of scam, or that the person might back out as soon as they saw a woman arriving with two small children. Even so, that was the first concrete opportunity that had come up since the eviction.
She showed the paper to Lucas, who asked if that meant they would have a house again. Marta replied that she didn’t know yet [about music], but that she needed to try. She saved the number on her old cell phone, which was almost out of battery, and left the church holding the paper carefully, as if that small announcement was the only hope capable of preventing her and her children from spending their first night sleeping on the street.
[music] The next morning, Marta woke up before the sun had fully risen. She and the children had managed to spend the night at the home of a lady from the church, who, upon realizing the family’s situation, offered them a mattress in her living room just for that night. Marta barely got any sleep. [music] The paper with the farm’s address remained in her hand the entire time, folded several times from how often she opened it to check if she hadn’t read it wrong.
Once she had gotten the children ready, she thanked them for their help, [music] placed the two suitcases on the sidewalk, and walked to the nearest bus stop. The money was counted. She did the math in her head and realized that after the ticket, very little would be left. Still, [music] knew there was no other choice. Along the way, Lucas looked out the window trying to figure out where they were going.
Clara held the teddy bear in her lap and asked questions every few minutes. She wanted to know if the house was big, if it had a dog, if the lady in the ad was nice, and if they could stay there for a long time. Marta would simply reply that everything depended on the conversation they would have when they arrived. Deep down, she was also full of doubts.
I was thinking about what I would do if the elderly woman refused the children’s presence or if she simply changed her mind when she opened the door. After almost an hour’s journey, the bus stopped at a roadside stand surrounded by trees. The driver explained that this was the closest place to the indicated address. Marta thanked them, went downstairs with her bags, and realized she still had to walk quite a distance on a dirt road.
[music] The heat increased with each passing minute. Lucas insisted on carrying one of the backpacks to help his mother. Clara walked slowly because she was tired, but she didn’t complain. After a few minutes, an old wooden gate appeared in the distance . Behind her was a narrow road, surrounded by old trees, that led to a large, but rather dilapidated house.
The roof showed signs of age. [music] Some windows were closed and the garden looked neglected for many years. Even so, everything was clean. There was no feeling of abandonment, only silence. Marta took a deep breath before clapping her hands near the entrance. It took a few moments before the main door was opened.
A woman with completely white hair slowly appeared. She was thin, wore a simple dress, and observed every detail of the family standing before her. His eyes darted from Marta to Lucas, then to Clara, before returning to Marta once more. Her expression wasn’t one of sympathy, [music] but it didn’t show immediate rejection either; she was simply assessing who had arrived.
Marta introduced herself politely, explained that she had found the announcement at church [music], and asked if the position was still available. The lady remained silent for a few seconds before replying that yes, [music] but she hadn’t expected to receive someone accompanied by two children. [music] Marta felt a tightness in her chest.
She explained that she was a widow, that she had lost her job days before [in music], and that she had nowhere to leave her children. He also said that he perfectly understood if that were a problem. Dona Amélia continued looking at the three of them without saying anything. Lucas held his sister’s hand while waiting for her answer.
Clara hid part of her face behind her mother. After a few moments, the elderly woman opened the door a little wider and asked them to come in to talk. The interior of the house was simple, but very well organized. The furniture was antique, the walls displayed old photographs in picture frames, and there was a large clock making a constant sound that filled the silence of the rooms.
[music] Marta realized that there were no signs of other people living there. The house seemed too big for just one person to live in. Dona Amélia led everyone to the kitchen, placed a kettle on the stove, and inquired about Marta’s life. The conversation was long. Marta spoke about her husband’s death, her job as a cook, the eviction, and the lack of family members who could help her.
At no point did he exaggerate his situation; he simply answered everything honestly. Dona Amélia listened attentively, asking few questions, but paying attention to every detail. When Lucas asked permission to get a drink of water and Clara thanked the elderly woman for the glass she had received before even taking a sip, she observed the children’s behavior without making any comment.
After hearing the whole story, she explained that she had placed the ad because she could no longer manage the farm alone. She said she needed help preparing meals, keeping the house organized, remembering medication schedules, and assisting with some simple daily tasks. He also made it clear that he valued tranquility and respect.
Marta replied that she would do everything in her power. Even so, Dona Amélia didn’t seem completely convinced. She explained that she didn’t usually trust people easily. He said that he had already hired employees who disappeared, taking tools, music, household items, and even animals from the property. For this reason, he preferred to act cautiously.
So, he made a decision. He said that Marta and the children could only stay for one week. At the end of those seven days, he would decide whether living together would work out or not. Marta accepted immediately. For someone who didn’t even have a place to sleep that night, a week already represented a huge opportunity.
Dona Amélia showed a simple room at the back of the house. There was a double bed, a bunk bed, an old wardrobe, and a window overlooking the backyard. Lucas and Clara smiled discreetly when they realized they would finally have a safe place to rest. Marta thanked them emotionally, [music] but tried to hide how much that help meant to her.
That same afternoon, without anyone asking for [music], she began to organize the kitchen, washed the dishes that had piled up, cleaned the stove, and prepared lunch using the ingredients found in the pantry. [music] When she called Dona Amélia to eat, the old woman seemed surprised. She confessed that it had been a very long time since someone had prepared a meal for her.
During lunch, there was hardly any conversation. Even so, Lucas commented that the food reminded him of the meals his mother used to make when she still worked at the restaurant. Clara asked if there were any fruits in the backyard. Dona Amélia replied that there was an orchard in the back, but no one had harvested anything for months.
After the meal, the children asked permission to explore the grounds. The elderly woman agreed, but asked that they not leave the house. While Lucas and Clara ran around the yard, discovering trees, chickens, and an old wooden swing almost hidden by the undergrowth, Marta helped Dona Amélia put away some groceries and sort out the week’s medicine.

Gradually, the conversation became a little lighter. The woman commented that living alone made all the days seem the same. Marta just listened. In the late afternoon, Lucas appeared carrying some fruit he had found fallen near the orchard. He asked if he could combine them to make juice.
For the first time since they arrived, Dona Amélia smiled slightly. He said that the orchard had fed many people years ago and that a child had shown interest in it for a long time. As the sun disappeared behind the trees, Marta discreetly looked out the window of the room where she would sleep with her children. He still didn’t know if that week would change his life or end in yet another painful goodbye.
[music] But after so many days living only in fear and uncertainty, for the first time, she felt that perhaps there was a small chance to start all over again. The first few days passed faster than Marta had imagined. The morning after her first day on the farm, she woke up early, even before Dona Amélia left her room. She prepared the coffee using the ingredients she had found in the pantry, carefully set the table, and called the children to eat quietly, trying not to disturb the lady of the house.
When Amelia entered the kitchen, she found everything organized. The table was clean, the coffee still hot, the bread warm, and some cut fruit on a plate. She stood there for a few seconds observing that scene, which hadn’t been part of her routine for many years. He sat down slowly and thanked them with few words.
Marta simply replied that she enjoyed cooking and that taking care of the house was part of the agreement. After coffee, [music] while Marta was washing the dishes, Lucas asked if he could help with anything. [music] Dona Amélia looked at the boy and said that, if he wanted, he could collect some dry branches that had fallen near [music] the orchard after the last rain.
Lucas left excited about the mission. Clara asked to join her brother [for music], but Marta explained that she needed to make her own bed first. The girl did everything quickly and then ran to the backyard. From the kitchen window, Dona Amélia watched the two of them walking among the trees, talking and pointing to everything they found.
That activity seemed strange for a house that had become accustomed to silence for so long. Throughout the morning, [music] Marta cleaned the rooms, opened windows that had remained closed for weeks, and let the sunlight in. She also put some bed linens in the wash and dusted off the antique furniture.
At no point did she touch Dona Amélia’s personal belongings without asking permission. He always asked beforehand, showing respect for the house’s boundaries. The old woman noticed every detail, even without commenting. [music] After lunch, Clara appeared holding a small empty clay pot that she had found near the garden.
He asked if he could plant a flower there. [music] Dona Amélia replied that no one had tended to that garden for a long time and said that she could choose any seedling that was still alive. Clara was so happy that she spent almost the entire afternoon digging in the dirt with an old shovel she found in the storage room.
Lucas decided to help her and, without realizing it, [music] the two of them began cleaning part of the garden, removing dry leaves and small branches scattered on the ground. Marta watched everything from afar while hanging clothes on the clothesline. [music] For the first time since the eviction, I saw my children playing without the weight of worry etched on their faces.
That evening, during dinner, Lucas asked Dona Amélia what the farm used to be like. The woman took a few seconds before answering. [music] He recounted that many years ago there were employees working on the property, animals scattered across the pastures, and family celebrations on weekends. He said that the children used to run around the yard just like Lucas and Clara were doing now.
Then he fell silent for a few moments, as if remembering people who were no longer there. Marta realized that the subject stirred up difficult emotions and naturally changed the conversation, asking about some old recipes from the region. Amelia responded more easily and even taught a different way to prepare corn cake.
On the third day, Marta found a box full of old utensils in the pantry. He asked for permission to organize everything and separate what could still be used. Dona Amélia agreed. While they were working together, the elderly woman began to tell little stories about each object. There were pots and pans that had belonged to her mother, plates she had bought when she was young, and a set of cups that were almost never left the cupboard.
Marta listened with genuine attention, without feigning interest. This caused Amelia to talk more than she normally did. [music] Lucas and Clara began exploring only the permitted areas of the farm. [music] They discovered a small lake, watched birds building nests in the trees, and befriended an old dog that lived near the barn.
The animal was quite quiet, but soon began following the children everywhere . Clara decided to call him Bento. Dona Amélia said that the dog had lived on the farm for many years and had never easily accepted strangers. Verbento, accompanying Lucas and Clara everywhere, made the old woman realize that even the old animal seemed less lonely.
On the fourth day, Marta noticed that Dona Amélia was walking with more difficulty. Instead of simply delivering the medication at the scheduled times, he began accompanying the elderly woman on short walks around the yard so she could get some exercise . [music] At first, Amelia said she didn’t need that help, but gradually she accepted the company.
During these walks they talked about simple things, like the weather, [music], the trees on the farm, and the changes the city had undergone over the years. Gradually, the conversations stopped feeling like an obligation and began to happen naturally. That same week, Lucas noticed that some of the roof tiles on the chicken coop were loose, [music] asked for some simple tools, and spent a good part of the afternoon trying to help.
Since he was still small, he couldn’t do everything by himself, but he showed a willingness to help. Dona Amélia watched from afar and commented to Marta that it had been a long time since she had seen a child so concerned with helping without expecting anything in return. Marta replied that her children had learned early on that everyone needed to do their part.
Clara, in turn, decided to pick some flowers from the garden to place on the kitchen table. She asked several times if she could only pick the ones that were already open so as not to damage the flowerbeds. Amelia smiled discreetly when she saw the girl’s thoughtfulness . The table regained a color that had disappeared years ago.
On Friday, Marta prepared a special lunch using vegetables from her garden and a simple recipe she used to make for her family when her husband was still alive. The smell of the food spread throughout the entire house. [music] Lucas and Clara helped set the table while Dona Amélia remained seated, observing the activity.
When everyone started eating, Clara joked that no one could get up before telling a funny story. Lucas laughed and invented a situation involving the dog Bento chasing chickens. Marta joined in the fun, and even Dona Amélia let out a spontaneous laugh, something that seemed like it hadn’t happened in a long time. She herself appeared surprised by her own reaction and remained silent for a few seconds after laughing.
Later, while they were washing the dishes together, Marta commented that it was nice to hear a house full of conversation. Dona Amélia replied softly that she had forgotten what it was like to live in a place where there were children’s voices. That phrase stayed in Marta’s head for the rest of the day. [music] When night fell, the old woman entered the old farmhouse living room [music] and found Lucas reading a children’s book to Clara on the sofa.
The two were so focused that they didn’t even notice his presence. She stood in the doorway, observing that simple scene. [music] Then he walked over to an old bookcase, took out a photo album, and sat down in an armchair. For the first time in many years, [music] opened the album without feeling the urge to close it immediately.
As she listened to Lucas’s calm voice reading to his sister and watched Marta sewing up a small tear in the girl’s backpack, Dona Amélia realized that the silence that had filled the house had begun to disappear without her noticing. The trial week wasn’t over yet, but something inside her was beginning to change in a way she couldn’t even explain.
And for the first time in a long time, the old farm once again seemed like a place where real life existed. As the first week drew to a close, Marta could already see small changes in the farm’s routine. Dona Amélia would wake up a little earlier, making a point of having coffee with everyone at the table, and sometimes even asking what Lucas and Clara planned to do during the day.
That rapprochement happened naturally, without grand displays of affection, [music] but enough to show that the elderly woman no longer saw the presence of her family as a nuisance. That morning, after breakfast, Marta mustered the courage to ask if she should start looking for another place to live or if she could stay for a few more days.
Dona Amélia remained silent while slowly stirring the cup. Then she looked up and replied that the trial week was over, but that she saw no reason to send away people who had brought peace to a house where there had previously been only silence. Marta thanked them emotionally and promised to continue taking care of everything with the same dedication.
Lucas smiled discreetly upon hearing the news, and Clara ran to hug her mother, happy to know they wouldn’t have to go out again. The tranquility, however, was short-lived. Later that afternoon, a black car pulled onto the dirt road, kicking up a large cloud of dust. [music] The engine noise caught everyone’s attention .
Lucas stopped playing near the orchard. Clara ran to her mother, and Dona Amélia looked out the window with a serious expression [music] that Marta did n’t yet recognize. The car pulled up in front of the house and a tall, well- dressed man wearing sunglasses got out without showing any sign of being in a hurry. Before even knocking on the door, he stepped onto the porch as if he were used to doing it.
As soon as he entered the room, he took off his glasses and looked at Marta and the children, unable to hide his surprise. Then he turned his attention to Dona Amélia and asked who those people were. The elderly woman calmly replied that Marta was living there to help her with the housework and that Lucas and Clara were her children.
The man gave a short, unsympathetic smile and replied that it seemed like a rather risky decision. Marta realized immediately that she was not welcome. [music] Dona Amélia introduced the visitor, saying that this was Renato, a nephew who lived in the city. Marta greeted him politely, but he responded only with a discreet nod of his head.
For the rest of the afternoon, Renato walked around the farm, observing everything. He inquired about the vegetable garden, the animals, and certain areas of the property, as if he were conducting an inspection. Marta continued with her tasks as normal, avoiding any arguments.
[music] When he returned to the kitchen, he found Renato talking to Dona Amélia in a low voice. As soon as she entered, he interrupted the conversation and completely changed the tone. That caught her attention, but she preferred not to ask anything. [music] At dinner, Renato remained seated at the table with everyone, but he asked questions that made Marta uncomfortable.
I wanted to know how long she had known Dona Amélia, why she had been chosen to live there, and how much she was being paid for her work. [music] Marta answered everything honestly. He explained that he had found an advertisement at the church and was simply fulfilling the agreement proposed by the homeowner herself.
Renato listened without showing any sign of believing a word. He then commented that there were many people willing to take advantage of elderly people who lived alone. Silence filled the table for a few seconds. Lucas sensed the heavy atmosphere and lowered his head. Clara continued eating without fully understanding what was happening.
Dona Amélia then interrupted the conversation and said that Marta was her guest and deserved respect. Renato replied that he was simply being cautious because he knew of stories of people manipulating elderly people to obtain inheritances. Marta took a deep breath and chose not to answer. I knew that any discussion at that moment would only make the situation worse.
The following morning, Renato returned early. He said he would take care of some farm-related matters and spent hours walking around the property with a clipboard in his hands. He talked to former workers in the area, observed fences, and took notes. At one point, he approached Lucas, who was helping to pick fruit from the orchard, and asked if he liked living there.
The boy replied that he liked [music] very much and that Dona Amélia was a good person. Renato smiled strangely and asked if his mother had ever talked about money or about who would own the farm in the future. [music] Lucas immediately replied that he didn’t understand that subject and went back to work. When she recounted the conversation to Marta, she felt a tightness in her chest.
[music] That same afternoon, Renato looked for Marta while she was preparing dinner. [music] Without mincing words, he said that he knew very well people who appeared out of nowhere offering help to wealthy elderly people. He said that it always ended the same way and implied that she was interested in Dona Amélia’s fortune.
Marta replied firmly that she knew absolutely nothing about the elderly woman’s assets and that she had only accepted the invitation because she needed to protect her children. Renato laughed ironically and said that the speech seemed very rehearsed. Before the conversation could continue, Dona Amélia entered the kitchen and asked what was going on.
Renato quickly replied that he was only talking to Marta. [music] The old woman looked at the two of them for a few seconds and asked him to let the cook finish her work in peace. That night, Marta had trouble falling asleep. He wondered if it would be better to leave before the problems got worse.
I was afraid that Lucas and Clara would witness fights or be treated with hostility. While he was reflecting on this, he heard someone knocking lightly on the bedroom door. It was Dona Amélia. The old woman entered slowly and sat in the chair near the window. He said he knew Renato had been unpleasant and asked Marta not to take those accusations seriously.
He explained that his nephew rarely appeared on the farm throughout the year, [music] but always showed up when the subject involved money or land management. Marta asked if he helped take care of the property. Dona Amélia simply replied that he preferred giving opinions to working. [music] The next day, Renato insisted again that his aunt sign some documents related to the farm’s administration.
She said it would be safer to leave everything organized and that she was too old to handle so many matters on her own. Dona Amélia refused immediately. The old woman’s firm response irritated Renato, who tried to hide his displeasure, but his face betrayed his frustration. Marta watched everything from afar while hanging clothes on the clothesline.
[music] He realized that this discussion wasn’t recent. There was an old conflict between the two that had not yet been fully revealed. [music] As evening fell, Renato called Marta aside once more. This time his tone was colder. He told her she should take advantage of the time she still had to leave of her own accord.
According to him, that story would end very badly [music] and nobody would believe the version of a woman who had appeared out of nowhere, just when an elderly lady was living alone [music] on a valuable farm. Marta replied that she had done nothing wrong and that she would only leave if Dona Amélia asked her to. Renato gave a discreet smile and got into the car without saying anything else.
As the vehicle disappeared down the dirt road, raising a cloud of dust once more, Marta had a feeling that was difficult to explain. For the first time since finding a safe place to live with her children, she realized that the peace they had achieved could be seriously threatened and that Renato didn’t seem willing to give up his own interests so easily.
After Renato’s visit, the farm’s routine continued, but it was no longer the same. Marta did her best to maintain a calm atmosphere in the house, mainly because of Lucas and Clara, who could sense when the adults were worried. Even without fully understanding what was happening, they both felt that something had changed.
Dona Amélia also seemed more attentive. [music] He started locking some drawers that had previously remained open and checked the house documents more frequently. [music] Marta noticed these gestures of care, but never asked questions. He respected the elderly woman’s silence and believed that when she wanted to tell him something, she would do so at the right time.
Two days later, Renato showed up again unannounced. [music] This time he arrived early in the morning, parked the car in front of the house and went inside as if he owned the place. He found Marta sweeping the porch and asked where his aunt was. She replied that Dona Amélia was still having coffee in the kitchen.
Renato didn’t even thank them for the information. He walked over there and started a conversation in a seemingly calm tone. Marta continued working, but she could hear parts of the conversation through the open window. Renato insisted that his aunt let him manage the land. He said there were important contracts to renew and that a lady of her age shouldn’t have to worry about that sort of thing anymore.
Dona Amélia replied that she had taken care of her own life for decades [music] and remained perfectly capable of making decisions about her assets. Renato took a deep breath and changed his strategy. He then started talking about Marta. He said it was dangerous to keep a stranger living on the farm, especially someone who had suddenly appeared with two children.
The old woman replied that she knew Marta’s character much better than he had imagined. The comment bothered Renato, who left the kitchen making no attempt to hide his irritation. For the rest of the morning, he walked around the property asking questions of the former workers from the region, who performed small jobs on the farm.
She spoke to each one separately, trying to find out how long Marta had lived there, what her relationship with Dona Amélia was like, and if the elderly woman ever mentioned anything about money. The answers were not what he expected. Everyone said that Marta worked all day, treated Amélia with respect, and cared for the children with dedication.
[music] This seemed to increase his dissatisfaction even further. When he returned home, he found Lucas helping to repair a wooden fence alongside an employee named Seu Antônio. A simple man who had been doing small repairs on the property for many years. Renato asked the man if he trusted the woman who had appeared out of nowhere.
Seu Antônio replied that trust was earned through actions and that, up to that point, Marta had only done good for Dona Amélia. Renato ended the conversation immediately, clearly annoyed. Later, while Marta was preparing lunch, she heard his car leaving the farm. She thought she would finally have some peace, but she was wrong.
The following morning, a neighbor appeared at the gate, saying that some people in town were commenting that Marta was trying to convince Mrs. Amélia to change her will. Marta was completely surprised; she had never brought up that subject before. The neighbor explained that she had heard this comment at the bakery and decided to warn her because she didn’t believe those stories.
As soon as the woman left, Marta realized that the rumors had started. She had no proof, but she suspected something. It is unclear exactly who was spreading those lies. Even so, he decided not to tell the children anything. I didn’t want them to carry worries that belonged to adults. That afternoon, Dona Amélia invited Marta to have coffee on the veranda.
After a few minutes of silence, she asked if anyone had said anything unpleasant to her in the last few days. [music] Marta tried to downplay the situation, but ended up revealing the rumors circulating in the city. [music] The old woman closed her eyes for a few seconds and shook her head slowly. Then he said that he had known Renato since he was a boy and that he always found a way to convince people that he was right, even when he wasn’t.
Marta asked if there was any reason for him to insist so much on controlling the farm. Dona Amélia replied that it did exist, but preferred to explain everything only when the appropriate time came . I simply said that I hadn’t trusted him for many years. The answer further piqued Marta’s curiosity , [music] but she respected the elderly woman’s decision.
Two days later, Renato returned accompanied by a man in a suit who introduced himself as a financial consultant. [music] The two spent almost an hour trying to convince Dona Amélia that it was necessary to reorganize the entire administration of the property. [music] They talked about investments, contracts, and documents.
Marta remained distant, tending to the kitchen, but she could tell the conversation was becoming increasingly tense. At one point, Dona Amélia stood up from her chair and stated firmly that she would not sign anything that day. The consultant quickly gathered the papers and left without arguing.
Renato stayed for a few more minutes. Before getting into the car, he approached Marta and whispered that she would eventually find out who Dona Amélia really was. Marta replied simply that she knew her well enough to respect her. Renato smiled strangely and left. That night, Lucas asked why that man always seemed angry. Marta explained that some people become so focused on getting what they want that they forget to treat others with respect.
The boy simply agreed and went back to drawing on the kitchen table. [music] Meanwhile, Clara was preparing small cookies alongside Dona Amélia. The old woman chuckled quietly as she watched the girl, covered in flour, trying to get the dough’s shape right. Marta watched the scene and thought that it had been a long time since the house had seemed so welcoming.
Despite all the difficulties, there was a sense of family there that she believed she had lost forever. A few days later, an incident occurred that made Marta realize the problem was even bigger than she had imagined. [music] While cleaning an old cabinet in the living room, she found a wooden box that had fallen behind some books.
Before she could even open it, Dona Amélia appeared and asked her to leave it on the table. The old woman took a deep breath, opened the box, and took out some very old documents. Among them were copies of deeds, receipts, and a folder held together by old rubber bands. Marta tried to move away to give them privacy, but Amélia asked her to stay.
[music] After a few seconds of looking at those papers, he said that he had hidden everything because he had suspected Renato’s intentions for a long time. He explained that years ago he noticed inconsistencies in some property records and began to investigate discreetly. He discovered that part of the land had been sold without his authorization.
Marta was surprised and asked how that was possible. Dona Amélia replied that someone had used a forged power of attorney in her name. [music] For a while, she tried to resolve the situation without creating family conflicts, believing that Renato would admit his mistake. That never happened. On the contrary, whenever he was questioned, he would invent a new excuse.
Marta listened to every word, unable to hide her astonishment. Finally, she was beginning to understand why Renato insisted so much on controlling the farm and keeping away anyone who could gain her aunt’s trust. Before the conversation could continue, they heard the sound of a car approaching again down the road. [music] Dona Amélia walked to the window, looked out, and immediately recognized Renato’s vehicle.
Without changing his tone, he closed the folder with the documents, put everything back inside the wooden box, and told Marta that there were still many things she needed to know, but that this was not the right time, because the man he most feared would have the truth revealed had just returned to the farm once again. Renato entered the house without waiting for an invitation, as he was used to doing, but this time he found a different atmosphere.
Dona Amélia remained seated in the room with a firm posture while Marta stayed by her side. The wooden box had already been put back inside the [music] cabinet, and no documents remained on the table. Renato looked at the two of them, trying to figure out if he had interrupted any important conversation.
Then he offered a discreet smile and asked if there was a meeting taking place. [music] Dona Amélia replied only that she was talking to Marta about household matters. Renato seemed not to believe it, but preferred not to insist at that moment. Instead, he placed a folder on the table and said he needed to resolve an issue related to the farm’s land .
Marta noticed that the old woman’s expression changed immediately. That was nothing new to her. Renato opened some maps of the property and began pointing out specific areas, saying that there were producers interested in leasing part of that land. He spoke as if all the decisions had already been made. [music] Dona Amélia waited for him to finish and asked who had authorized any negotiation.
[music] Renato replied that he was simply anticipating opportunities to avoid losses. The elderly woman calmly closed the folder and said that no negotiations would take place without her authorization. Renato took a deep breath and tried to stay calm, [music] but his patience seemed to be dwindling. He stated that his aunt had not been involved in managing the farm for a long time [music] and that someone needed to take on that responsibility before it was too late.
Dona Amélia replied that she would never hand over control of the property to someone she didn’t trust. Silence filled the room for a few seconds. Marta remained quiet, but she realized that the conversation was hiding much more than what was being said. Renato then stepped forward and asked directly why she insisted on distrusting him after so many years.
It was at that moment that Dona Amélia decided to stop hiding the truth. She looked her nephew in the eye and said she was suspicious because she had discovered that part of the family’s land had been sold using a forged power of attorney. Marta felt a chill when she heard those words.
Renato remained motionless for a few moments and then let out a small laugh, trying to appear calm. He said that was absurd and that someone was putting wrong ideas into his aunt’s head. Dona Amélia replied that no one needed to say anything, because she herself had found the differences between the signatures when she started checking old farm documents.
He also said that he secretly sought out a lawyer to check the records and discovered that some areas had indeed been transferred to third parties without raising his voice. He claimed that she was being deceived and that those deals had been made to protect the family’s assets. The elderly woman replied that protection was never about hiding documents or imitating another person’s signature.
[music] Marta watched everything in silence. That was the first time I had seen Dona Amélia confront someone with such firmness. [music] Renato started pacing back and forth in the room. I tried to find a different justification every minute. First he said it had all been a mistake by the registry office. He then stated that a former accountant was the true person responsible for the documents.
[music] Then he stated that his aunt was confusing old dates. None of the explanations seemed to convince Mrs. Amélia. She remained seated, looking at him without looking away. He then said that he had already gathered copies of contracts, records, and other sufficient evidence to understand exactly what had happened.
Renato stopped walking and asked where those documents were. Dona Amélia replied only that they were very well guarded and that he would never lay a hand on them. His face changed completely. For the first time, Marta saw the facade of a well-mannered man, which he tried to maintain in front of other people, disappear.
His eyes showed irritation and concern at the same time. He glanced quickly at Marta and said that this was only happening because a stranger had appeared to turn the aunt against her own family. Marta calmly replied that she had never given an opinion on documents or on the farm’s administration. She only took care of the house and Dona Amélia’s health .
Renato retorted, saying that was exactly how it all began. According to him, self-serving people first gained the trust of elderly people and then took control of their lives. Before Marta could answer again, Dona Amélia rose from her chair with some difficulty, but keeping her voice firm. He said that Marta had never asked for money, property, or any benefit beyond what had been agreed upon from day one.
He also recalled that Renato would go months without showing up and only return when he wanted to deal with land or contracts. or writings. The old woman’s words left her nephew speechless for a few seconds. [music] Lucas and Clara, who were playing in the backyard, heard part of the argument and approached the living room door.
Marta made a discreet gesture for them to remain outside. She didn’t want the children to participate in that conflict. Renato noticed the two of them and lowered his voice slightly, perhaps so as not to appear aggressive in front of them. Even so, [music] continued to insist that Dona Amélia hand over the documents to his lawyer.
[music] The answer was negative again. The conversation ended when the old woman pointed to the door [music] and asked him to leave. Renato stood still for a few seconds, as if he couldn’t believe what he had just heard. Then he picked up the folder, put away the papers, and walked to the exit. Before getting into the car, he turned to Marta and said that she would regret getting involved in that affair.
She didn’t answer, she just stayed by Dona Amélia’s side until the car disappeared down the dirt road. [music] When silence returned to the farm, Marta helped the old woman sit down again. He noticed that she was tired, although she was trying to hide it. She made some tea and remained silent, [music] until Amelia decided to continue the interrupted conversation.
She explained that she began to suspect Renato about 5 years prior, when she found discrepancies between old farm records and more recent documents. At first, he believed they were just administrative errors, but as he investigated, he uncovered new irregularities. Some areas had been sold for prices well below market value. Others appeared to be registered under the names of companies she had never heard of .
Everything pointed to the same person. Marta asked why she never reported it immediately. Dona Amélia replied that it took her a while to accept that someone from her own family would be capable of acting in that way. [Music] also hoped that Renato would confess what he had done before the situation reached this point. Since that never happened, he decided to seek legal help in secret.
She explained that the lawyer advised her to keep all the documentation [music] and avoid commenting on the matter until she had gathered sufficient evidence. Marta then understood why the old woman was always so cautious whenever Renato appeared. It wasn’t just distrust, it was the fear that he would find some way to permanently hide what he had done.
That afternoon, [music] after Dona Amélia went to rest a bit, Marta went out to the backyard. [music] She found Lucas fixing the old swing so that Clara could play more safely. The two asked why that man was always arguing with the lady of the house. Marta simply replied that some people let the desire to make money outweigh respect for their own family.
The children accepted the answer without asking any further questions. As she watched her children playing again, Marta realized she needed to protect that tranquility as much as possible. Upon returning inside the house, he found Dona Amélia standing in front of an old bookcase, staring intently at a framed photograph.
The old woman held the image carefully, and her eyes were filled with thoughts she couldn’t yet put into words. Then, he took a deep breath, put the photograph back in its place, and simply said that there was still a much greater truth hidden in that house. A truth that would completely change Marta’s life when the time finally came for it to be revealed.
The following days were seemingly calmer, but no one on the farm could forget the argument between Dona Amélia and Renato. Marta continued taking care of the house, as she always did. She prepared meals, organized the elderly woman’s medication, cleaned the rooms, and found time to play a little with Lucas and Clara in the late afternoon.
[music] Despite the effort to maintain the normal routine, she noticed that Dona Amélia was more tired than before. At times, the woman needed to stop for short walks around the yard to catch her breath. Other times, he would discreetly place his hand on his chest and breathe more slowly before continuing to walk. When Marta asked if everything was alright, Amélia would simply reply that it was just a phase and change the subject.
Marta didn’t insist, but she began to observe her more closely. One morning, while they were preparing coffee, Clara appeared holding a drawing she had made with colored pencils. It was a sheet of paper where she had drawn the farmhouse, some trees, the dog Bento, Lucas running through the orchard, Marta smiling on the porch, and Dona Amélia sitting in a rocking chair.
The girl handed the drawing to the old woman, saying that now this was her home too. Dona Amélia stared at the leaf for several seconds, then smiled with teary eyes and gave her thanks. [music] Then he excused himself, stood up slowly, and took the drawing to his own room. Marta realized that this simple gesture had deeply touched the woman.
At lunchtime, Amelia seemed more pensive than usual. She watched Lucas and Clara talking to each other while they ate and, several times, seemed to want to say something, but gave up before starting. At the end of the meal, she asked Marta to accompany her to the balcony. The two sat in silence, watching the wind sway the trees.
After a few minutes, Dona Amélia asked Marta if she believed that a person could spend their entire life trying to fix a very old mistake. Marta replied that some choices leave marks that are difficult to erase, but there is always value in trying to do what is right, even after a long time.
The old woman lowered her head and pressed her hands together. It seemed she was waging a battle within herself . When he finally looked up , he simply said that there were truths that hurt so much that they seemed impossible to tell. Marta replied that no one was obligated to talk about pain when they weren’t ready to do so.
The conversation ended there, but those words kept echoing in both of their heads for the rest of the day. The next day, Lucas asked to help his friend Antônio repair an old fence near the pasture. Clara preferred to stay in the kitchen, learning from Marta how to make shortbread cookies. Dona Amélia watched everything from her seat near the window, smiling as she saw the girl trying to roll out the dough with a rolling pin that was almost bigger than her arms.
Bento remained lying at her feet, as if he too were enjoying that simple moment. When the cookies were ready, Clara separated the prettiest ones onto a plate and took them to Amelia, saying that those were special because they had been made for her. The woman held the girl’s hand for a few moments before trying a piece.
Then she commented that for many years someone had been preparing something just to see her happy. Clara innocently replied that people from the same family often did that for each other. Marta heard that phrase while putting away the kitchen utensils and realized that Dona Amélia was completely speechless.
Later, while the children were playing in the yard, the old woman called Marta over to the house’s library. It was a rarely used room, filled with old books and dark furniture. She carefully closed the door and slowly walked to a shelf where there was a small, old clock. He removed the object from its place, ran his hand over the wood, and stared at it for a few seconds.
Then he said that there was something important hidden in that house, something that one day would need to reach Marta’s hands. Before he could explain further, the sound of a glass falling was heard in the kitchen. [music] Clara had spilled water on the floor while trying to fill a bottle. The two quickly left to help her, and the conversation was interrupted.
That night, a heavy rain began to fall on the farm. Lightning illuminated the sky while the wind made the windows tremble. Lucas and Clara met in the living room with Bento, who was afraid of thunder. Marta prepared hot chocolate for everyone, and the atmosphere became cozy, despite the bad weather. Dona Amélia watched the scene in silence, holding the mug with both hands.
At one point, Lucas asked her what her childhood was like. The woman replied that she grew up on that same farm, ran through the same fields, and played in the same trees that he knew. He also mentioned that the house used to be full of people, laughter, and family gatherings. [music] Then he paused and added that some decisions change life forever.
Before Lucas could ask anything else , she changed the subject by asking about the boy’s school. [music] The next day, the weather was beautiful again. Marta realized that Dona Amélia was insisting on helping her more than she should. Even though she was tired, she insisted on helping prepare lunch and walking through the garden to show the children some of the old plants.
Marta suggested several times that she rest a little, but Amélia said she did n’t want to miss any of those moments. During the afternoon, the four people spent a few hours in the orchard picking ripe fruit. Lucas climbed a small ladder to reach the highest branches while Clara gathered the fruit in a basket.
[music] Dona Amélia watched everything, smiling. Suddenly, she discreetly placed her hand on her chest. Marta noticed the gesture [music] and asked if he was feeling any pain. The elderly woman replied that it was just a minor inconvenience and asked her not to worry. A few minutes later, he insisted on going back inside the house.
That night, Marta found Dona Amélia awake in the living room, even though it was already late. The lady was looking at an old photograph that she held between her fingers. When he noticed Marta’s presence, he quickly put the image away inside a book. Then he asked her to sit down. In a voice more serious than usual, she said that if anything ever happened to her, there was a very old key hidden inside the drawer of her bedroom dresser.
Marta replied immediately that she didn’t want to talk about it and that she still had many years to live. Dona Amélia smiled sadly and said that life didn’t always allow people to choose when to leave. Then he took Marta’s hand and asked her to promise him something. If he ever received that key, he would have to open a room that had remained locked for over 30 years and read everything he found inside before making any decisions.
Marta was surprised by the request and asked why that room was so important. The old woman replied simply that all the answers were waiting behind that door. Before he could explain anything more, a sharp pain gripped his chest. Her expression changed completely. The hand that had been holding Marta’s lost its strength while the other pressed against the left side of her chest.
She tried to get up from the chair, but her legs gave way. [music] Marta ran to catch her before she fell to the ground. Lucas and Clara, startled by the noise, came running out of the kitchen. Marta asked Lucas to pick up the phone immediately while Clara went to get a glass of water. Dona Amélia was breathing with great difficulty.
His face had lost its color, and small beads of sweat appeared on his forehead. Marta called emergency services with trembling hands, quickly describing the situation. While they waited for the ambulance, the elderly woman made a tremendous effort to put her hand in her dress pocket. From there, he retrieved a small, old metal key, darkened by time.
[Music] handed the object to Marta and, holding her hand with what little strength she had left, asked her to open the locked room and discover the whole truth hidden there, [Music] because only then would she understand why that encounter had never been a simple coincidence. The ambulance arrived a few minutes later, but for Marta those minutes seemed like an eternity.
The paramedics quickly entered the house, [music] placed Mrs. Amélia on a stretcher, and began providing initial care right there in the living room. Lucas and Clara watched everything, embraced, completely terrified. Marta did her best to remain calm, answering questions about the medications the elderly woman was taking and about what had happened before the crisis.
One of the professionals explained that she needed to be taken to the hospital immediately. Before the stretcher crossed the front door, Dona Amélia opened her eyes for a few seconds. [music] Her breathing remained labored, but she searched for Marta with her eyes. The old key was still locked in the cook’s hand .
[music] With great effort, the lady repeated that she should not forget the locked room. Then he gently squeezed Marta’s fingers and she was taken to the ambulance. The vehicle sped off down the dirt road with its siren blaring, [music] fading into the trees. The silence that settled over the farm seemed even greater than before.
Marta took the children inside the house and tried to calm them down. Clara repeatedly asked if Dona Amélia would be back soon. Lucas remained quiet, but his eyes showed concern. [music] Marta replied that the doctors would do everything possible and asked the two to rest a little, [music] although she herself knew that no one would be able to sleep.
For much of the night, she remained seated in the kitchen, holding the small key. She thought about the old woman’s last words and tried to understand why that room was so important. At various points, he almost decided to wait for news from the hospital before doing anything. But then, he remembered the request made by Mrs.
Amélia shortly before the ambulance arrived. That seemed like more than just a simple wish. It seemed like a mission that needed to be accomplished. It was already dawn when Lucas appeared in the kitchen. The boy said he couldn’t sleep. Marta hugged him and explained that she needed to check a room in the house because she had promised to do so to Mrs. Amélia.
Lucas asked if he could stay up and wait for her. [music] Marta replied yes, but asked him to look after her sister while she took care of that task. The boy agreed immediately. Holding the key, Marta walked down the hallway of the house. For the first time since arriving at the farm, he noticed an old door at the end of the hallway that had always remained closed.
I had never inquired about that place because I believed it was just a warehouse. Now I understood that there was much more hidden there than that. [music] She brought the key close to the lock. The old metal made a small cracking sound as it was spun. The door took a while to open, as if it hadn’t been used for many years.
As soon as he entered, he smelled the scent of old wood and the aroma of a room that had been closed off for decades. [music] Contrary to what I imagined, the room was not abandoned. Everything remained clean and organized. The furniture was covered with thin fabric covers to protect it from dust. There was a neatly made single bed, a desk near the window, an old wardrobe, and several boxes lined up in a corner.
On the main wall there was a photograph of a smiling girl. Marta approached slowly. The girl in the picture appeared to be about 15 years old. Her face radiated a simple joy. Without knowing why, Marta felt a strange sense of familiarity when she looked at that photograph. She continued walking around the room until she found a wooden box on the desk.
Inside, there were dozens of letters held together by a rather old ribbon. Next to it were several photo albums. Marta sat down in the chair and began to leaf through the first album. The images showed Dona Amélia when she was still very young. [music] In some photographs, she appeared smiling next to an older couple, probably her parents.
In other instances, he was working on the farm or attending town festivals. As the pages turned, the girl from the photograph on the wall reappeared. This time she appeared still small, being held in the arms of Dona Amélia. Marta stood motionless. That child was present in several images. There were birthdays, walks in the garden, simple moments on the porch, and family meals.
Then, suddenly, the girl would completely disappear from the following photographs. It was as if it had never existed again. Marta closed the album and opened the packet of letters. The first one was written by Dona Amélia herself. In it, the young woman said she would never stop searching for her daughter.
even though everyone insisted that she forget the past. Another letter spoke of regret, longing, and guilt. Marta moved on to the next one, then to the next. Gradually, an entire story began to unfold before his eyes. Many years before, Dona Amélia had become pregnant at a very young age. At the time, his family considered it a scandal. Her parents decided that the child would be given up for adoption soon after birth.
Dona Amélia tried to stop [the music], but she couldn’t withstand the pressure from her own family. For years, she wrote letters to her daughter, even without knowing where she was. None of them had been sent. [music] They all remained stored in that room. Marta felt a tightness in her chest [music] as she imagined the pain of that separation.
Continuing to search through the documents, [music] found a folder with old records. There were certificates, receipts, [music] documents from the hospital where the birth took place, and an envelope that was more yellowed than the others. Inside it [the music] was a birth certificate.
Marta began to read attentively. The child’s name was Helena. As soon as he saw that name, his heart raced. Helena was also her mother’s name. [music] She took a deep breath and continued reading. She tried to convince herself that it could just be a coincidence, but when her eyes fell on the rest of the document, she felt her legs give way.
The birthdate was exactly the same as her mother’s. The hospital was also the same one that appeared in old documents kept by the family years ago. [music] Marta reread that information several times. Then he looked for other sheets of paper inside the envelope. He found an adoption record and a document containing the name of the couple who had received the girl.
Those were exactly the names of the grandparents she had always believed to be her biological grandparents. At that moment, all the pieces began to fall into place . Helena, her mother, had been adopted as a baby. Dona Amélia was her biological mother. This meant that the woman who had opened the doors of the farm to him was not just a stranger in need of company.
She was his grandmother. Marta put her hands to her face, unable to believe it. The memories of the last few months began to make sense in a completely different way. The announcement found in the church, the way Dona Amélia watched the children, the silent affection she showed for Lucas and Clara, the questions about her life, and even the way she seemed to know her before even gaining her trust.
[music] All of that stopped seeming like a coincidence. Marta continued examining the documents and found a small notebook with a blue cover. In the opening pages, Dona Amélia wrote that she never stopped searching for news of her daughter. After many years, he managed to discover that Helena had started a family, but she died before Helena had the courage to introduce herself.
[music] Further on, there were notes stating that she had located Marta months before posting the announcement in the church. She wrote that she had followed her granddaughter’s life from afar , witnessed her difficulties after her husband’s death [music], and spent days trying to muster the courage to knock on her door.
However, the fear of being rejected for having lost her daughter was stronger. Then, a different idea emerged . Instead of revealing her identity, she posted an ad offering accommodation in exchange for companionship, hoping that fate would naturally bring the two of them together. Marta slowly closed the notebook.
Tears streamed down her face without her even realizing it. There was no plan to deceive or manipulate her. There was only an elderly woman trying to find a second chance to recover the family she believed she had lost forever. While still holding that notebook in his hands, the house phone began ringing insistently in the hallway, breaking the heavy silence of that room which had kept for over 30 years [music] the truth that completely changed the history of the entire family.
The phone kept ringing incessantly, while Marta remained seated in her room with the notebook still open on her lap. It took her a few seconds to be able to react. His hands were shaking so much that he needed to take a deep breath before standing up. He walked down the hallway almost without feeling his own footsteps.
When she answered the call, she heard a doctor’s voice from the hospital asking if she was the person responsible for monitoring Mrs. Amélia. Marta answered yes. The doctor explained that the elderly woman had been stabilized after the crisis, but her condition was still very delicate. She remained hospitalized in the intensive care unit, and the next few hours would be crucial.
Marta thanked them for the information and slowly hung up the phone . The news brought a small relief, but it also increased his desire to talk to Dona Amélia while there was still time. She went back to the locked room, taking the device with her. I needed to understand everything before going to the hospital.
Lucas appeared at the door a few minutes later. The boy immediately realized that his mother had been crying. He asked if the lady was alright. Marta replied that the doctors were doing everything they could to help her. Lucas hugged his mother without asking any more questions, [music] then went back to the room where Clara had finally managed to fall asleep.
Marta closed the door to her old room again and resumed reading her notebook. The following pages showed Dona Amélia’s thoughts over the past few years. She wrote that she could never forget her daughter. On several occasions he tried to find her, but he always arrived too late or received incomplete information.
When he finally discovered where Helena had lived, he learned that she had already passed away some years before. From that moment on, he began searching for his granddaughter. There were notes stating that she had observed Marta several times from a distance, always very carefully so as not to frighten her. In one of them, he described the day he saw Marta leaving the restaurant where she worked.
Smiling alongside her children. In another, [the musician] recounted that she accompanied her to church after her husband’s death, when she realized that she was seeking strength to continue raising Lucas and Clara alone. Dona Amélia wrote that she wanted to approach at that moment, but couldn’t.
The fear of being told she wasn’t welcome was stronger. She believed that Marta would never forgive the woman who, many years before, had lost her own daughter. The last pages explained how the idea for the advertisement came about. Dona Amélia wrote that she preferred to offer help without revealing who she really was.
If Martha had refused to spend time with them after learning the truth, at least she would have received support when she needed it most. If, on the contrary, fate allowed them to create a true bond, perhaps one day he would find the courage to tell her everything. Marta closed her notebook and brought her hand to her face.
Each moment spent on the farm took on a completely different meaning. Dona Amélia’s lingering gazes , her care for Lucas and Clara, the way she seemed emotional seeing her family gathered around the table—it all made sense now. [music] There was no hidden agenda, nor coincidence. There was only a grandmother trying to reclaim a part of the life she had lost decades before.
When day broke, Marta prepared breakfast for the children and asked her father, Antônio, to stay with them for a few hours while she went to the hospital. [music] The old clerk agreed immediately. He said that Lucas and Clara could spend the day helping in the orchard to clear their heads.
Before leaving, Marta hugged her children tightly. Clara asked if she could give another drawing to Mrs. Amélia when she returned home. Marta smiled, trying to hide her emotion, and replied that the lady would like it very much. The trip to the hospital seemed endless. Throughout the journey, Marta recalled the conversations she had had with the elderly woman in recent weeks.
She remembered walks in the garden, recipes shared in the kitchen, stories about the farm, and the little moments when Amélia seemed to want to say something, but then gave up. Now she understood that on each of those occasions, the truth was about to be revealed. Upon arriving at the hospital, she was instructed to wait a few minutes before entering her room.
The doctor explained that Mrs. Amélia remained very weak and needed to avoid any exertion. [music] When she finally received permission, Marta entered slowly. The elderly woman was connected to several machines, breathing with difficulty, [music] but remained conscious. As soon as he saw Marta, he tried to force a small smile.
Marta moved a chair closer to the bed and held her hand. For a few seconds, neither of them was able to speak. Tears welled up in both of their eyes at the same time. [music] It was Marta who broke the silence. She said she opened the room and found everything that Dona Amélia had kept for so many years.
He said that he read the letters, saw the photographs, and discovered who Helena was. Before she even finished speaking, she noticed the old woman’s eyes filling with tears. Dona Amélia closed her eyes for a moment, as if gathering her strength. Then he asked quietly if Marta had understood the whole truth. [music] Marta answered yes.
He said he finally knew that Helena was his mother and that Dona Amélia was his grandmother. The woman began to cry silently. With great difficulty, he asked for forgiveness for not having been able to protect his own daughter when she was born. She explained that she was very young, completely dependent on her family, and was forced to give up the baby.
He said he fought against that decision for years, but was never able to undo the past. Marta listened to every word, holding her hand tightly. At no point did she interrupt her grandmother’s speech. When Dona Amélia finished, Marta replied with a choked voice that she no longer needed to carry that burden alone. [music] She said she couldn’t imagine the pain she had endured for so many years and that now she understood why she had created the church announcement.
The elderly woman confirmed with a slight nod. He said that months earlier he had discovered who Marta was and had spent days thinking about how he could get closer to her without destroying any possibility of coexistence. She was afraid to show up, claiming to be the grandmother of a woman who had never met her. I thought I would be rejected before I even got to explain my story.
Therefore, he chose a different path. He preferred to open the door of his own house and wait for life to decide the rest. Marta was crying, unable to hide her emotion. He said he never imagined he would find a part of his own family in that way. He also confessed that from the first days on the farm he felt an affection for Dona Amélia that was difficult to explain.
[music] Now she understood that perhaps that feeling existed because their blood had always been connected. Even though neither of them knows how to live this relationship. The old woman smiled very discreetly. With enormous effort, he raised his hand slightly and touched Marta’s face. Then he asked about Lucas and Clara.
Marta replied that they were both fine and that people were asking about her all the time. [music] Dona Amélia closed her eyes for a few seconds and said that the children brought joy back to that house [music] when she believed there was no hope left. She said that hearing her great-grandchildren laughing as they ran through the yard reminded her of her daughter, still a child, playing in that same spot many years before.
While they were talking, the doctor quickly went inside to check the equipment and asked Marta not to prolong the visit for too long. Before leaving, she approached the bed again and said she would return the next day. Dona Amélia held her hand one last time and replied that she hoped to have time to get to know better the family she had spent so long searching for.
Marta left the room with a heavy heart and walked slowly down the hospital corridor. [music] looking at the small, old key he still carried in his pocket. Now she understood that the key had not only opened a forgotten door inside the farm. She had opened up an entire past, [music] that had remained hidden for decades and that had finally allowed a grandmother and granddaughter to meet when neither of them still believed it was possible.
As Marta left the hospital, [music] unaware that he was being watched from a distance, Renato remained standing on the other side of the street in his car, following her every move with an expression that clearly showed [music] that he was beginning to suspect that Dona Amélia’s biggest secret had finally ceased to be a secret.
The next two days were marked by a mixture of hope and worry. [music] Marta divided her time between the farm and the hospital. In the morning, she prepared coffee for Lucas and Clara, tidied the house, and got everything in order with the help of her father, Antônio. Then he would go to visit Dona Amélia.
The children asked her every day when she would be coming home. [music] Clara was drawing new figures to give to her great-grandmother, without imagining that that word now had a much greater meaning. Marta had not yet told her children the truth. I wanted to wait for the right moment, when everything was calmer. [music] In the hospital, Mrs.
Amélia remained conscious at times, but extremely weak. The doctors [clearing their throats] explained that her heart had suffered great wear and tear and that her age made recovery very difficult. Even so, [music] Marta insisted on talking to her, holding her hand and telling little stories from the farm so that the lady would feel close to home.
On one of those visits, Dona Amélia asked Marta to bring the chair closer. In a low voice, she asked if Lucas and Clara were still running around the orchard. Marta smiled and replied yes. She recounted that Lucas was helping his father, Antônio, take care of the fences and that Clara had planted new flowers near the porch because she said the house needed to be beautiful for when she returned.
Dona Amélia’s eyes filled with tears. She said she never imagined she would have the opportunity to hear news from her own family in that way. Marta shook her hand and replied that she was already a part of their lives and that no one would change that. The woman breathed slowly and remained staring at the ceiling for a few seconds.
She then said that she had spent decades believing she would die completely alone. He said that when he met Marta months earlier, he didn’t have the courage to reveal who he was. She felt ashamed of her past and afraid of being rejected. That’s why he created the announcement in the church. She believed that if her granddaughter agreed to live on the farm, she could at least take care of her in silence, even if she never had the courage to tell the truth.
Marta replied that fate had found a path that neither of them could have imagined. [music] That same day, as she was leaving the hospital, she found Renato standing near the reception area. [music] He feigned surprise upon seeing her and asked how his aunt was doing. Marta replied only that the doctors were continuing to do everything possible.
Renato tried to start a conversation, asking if Dona Amélia had mentioned anything important before her hospitalization. Marta immediately realized that he wanted to find out if the old woman had said anything about the documents or the inheritance. He calmly replied that this was not the time for that kind of topic. Renato insisted, saying he needed to organize farm matters.
Marta looked at him and replied that the only priority at that moment was Dona Amélia’s recovery. Unable to hide his irritation, he got into the elevator and disappeared down the hospital corridors. When she returned to the farm that afternoon, Marta decided to tell Lucas and Clara part of the truth.
He gathered the two of them in the room and explained that he had discovered something very important about Mrs. Amélia. He said that she wasn’t just a lady who had helped them, she was his mother’s mother , which meant she was Marta’s grandmother and their great-grandmother. Lucas’s eyes widened as he tried to understand everything. [music] Clara was silent for a few seconds and then asked if that meant they had found a part of the family they didn’t even know existed.
Marta answered yes. The girl smiled and said that she always felt that Dona Amélia seemed like family because she treated the three of them with so much affection. Lucas walked to the window and stood looking out at the backyard. Then she turned to her mother and asked why no one had told her this before.
Marta explained that there were very old and painful stories that Dona Amélia was only able to reveal now. The boy silently agreed. In the following days, the children began calling the woman their great-grandmother whenever they recorded short videos for Marta to show at the hospital. Clara was showing off the flowers in the garden.
Lucas showed the repairs he was making to the fence, and Bento appeared wagging his tail in front of the camera. [music] When Marta put on the videos for Dona Amélia to watch, a discreet smile appeared on her tired face. She watched the same images repeatedly. He seemed to want to preserve every second in his memory, [music], but the improvement everyone expected didn’t happen.
One morning, as soon as Marta arrived at the hospital, she noticed a different kind of activity in the unit. Nurses were walking quickly down the corridor, and the doctor in charge asked her to wait a few minutes before going in. [music] Time seemed to stand still . Finally, the doctor approached with a serious expression.
He explained that Mrs. Amélia had suffered a new setback during the early morning hours. She remained conscious, but her heart was very weak. Marta entered the room trying to remain calm. The elderly woman opened her eyes when she noticed his presence. With great effort, he asked her to come closer.
Marta held her hand again. Dona Amélia spoke slowly, pausing briefly to breathe. [Music] said that he wanted to thank her for accepting that ad without imagining who she would find on the other side of the door. [music] She recounted that each breakfast, each meal prepared, each conversation on the porch, and each laugh from the children gave meaning back to the last days of her life.
Marta replied, crying, that she was the one who should be grateful. If I hadn’t found that document in the church, I might never have met my own grandmother. Dona Amélia closed her eyes for a few seconds [music] and then continued speaking. He asked Marta never to let Lucas and Clara grow up, believing they were alone in the world.
He said that families could be formed in different ways, [music] but the important thing was not to abandon those who needed help. Marta promised she would do it. A few minutes later, the doctor came back in to check the equipment. Dona Amélia seemed increasingly tired. She looked at Marta one more time and, with what little strength she had left, simply said that she could finally leave in peace because she had found her family.
Then he closed his eyes. [music] The machines started emitting different sounds and the medical team quickly entered the room. [music] Marta was led into the hallway while professionals attempted to resuscitate the patient. She stood there staring at the closed door, unable to look away for a single instant. After several minutes that seemed like hours, the doctor slowly came out, [music] approached Marta and said that the team had done everything they could , but Mrs.
Amélia did not survive the new cardiac arrest. Marta felt her legs give way. The tears came without her being able to control them. It wasn’t just the loss of a woman who had offered her shelter. It was the farewell to the grandmother she had just met. Later, when they returned to the farm, Lucas and Clara understood the answer just by looking at their mother’s face. The two ran to hug her.
The three stayed together for a long time, [music] barely able to say anything. Bento lay down at their feet, as if he too realized that something very important had changed. In the following days, the farm received neighbors, old acquaintances, and some people who had worked there many years before.
Everyone was commenting on how Dona Amélia had been living a reserved life lately . Renato also showed up during the wake. He wore dark clothes and greeted people with a serious expression. But Martha realized that his interest seemed to be directed elsewhere. At various times, he discreetly observed the house, the office, and the drawers where he imagined important documents might be kept.
After the burial, when most people had already left, Renato approached the family lawyer and asked in a firm voice when the will would be read . The lawyer replied that everyone would be officially summoned within a few days. Renato smiled confidently, convinced that he would finally take over everything he believed was rightfully his, [music] without imagining that Dona Amélia had prepared one last surprise, capable of completely changing the fate of the farm and of all those who remained connected to that family. The days following the
funeral were difficult for everyone. The farm seemed different without Dona Amélia’s presence. The silence that had previously disappeared because of the children returned to take over some moments in the house. But now it wasn’t a silence of loneliness, [the music] was a silence of longing.
Marta continued taking care of the property as she had done since she arrived. She prepared meals, kept everything organized, and made sure to maintain the garden that Clara had started tending alongside her great-grandmother. Lucas helped his father Antônio with small farm chores and said he wanted to learn everything to keep that place beautiful, because he was sure that Dona Amélia would like that.
Clara continued to place flowers on the kitchen table every morning. On some days, I would still ask if my great-grandmother would be able to see it from somewhere. Marta would simply reply that affection never completely disappears when it’s genuine. A few days later, the family’s lawyer called, asking Marta to come to the office for the reading of the will.
Renato would also be present. On the appointed morning, Marta put on the simplest and tidiest clothes she owned. He asked his father, Antônio, to stay with the children and then went to the city. All the way there, she could only think about the last conversations she had with Dona [musician] Amélia. I never imagined I would receive any inheritance.
He believed the farm would pass to a relative of the family and that after that he would need to find another place to live. When he arrived at the office, he found Renato sitting in the waiting room. He maintained a calm expression. Almost confidently, he greeted Marta with just a discreet nod and looked at his watch again.
A few minutes later, the lawyer invited them inside. On the table was a sealed envelope and several neatly organized documents. The lawyer explained that this was Mrs. Amélia’s most recent will , drawn up a few months before her death and registered in accordance with all legal requirements. Renato crossed his arms and smiled discreetly, as if he already knew the outcome. The lawyer began reading.
[music] First, Dona Amélia would leave small gifts for former employees and for charities that helped elderly people in the region. [music] Next, the document dealt with the main destination of his assets. The lawyer took a deep breath before continuing. Then he read that the entire farm, the productive lands, the financial investments, the savings accumulated over decades, and the other assets belonging to Dona Amélia would be left to her granddaughter Marta Alves, and to her great-grandchildren Lucas and Clara.
For a few seconds, nobody said a single word. Marta remained motionless, trying to understand if she had really heard that. Renato stood up abruptly from his chair. His face completely lost its composure. He immediately stated that this was impossible. She said that Marta had appeared in her aunt’s life a few months before [music] and had no connection whatsoever with the family.
The lawyer calmly closed the document and replied that Mrs. Amélia had attached to the will all the records that proved the kinship between her, Helena [musician] and Marta. There were also adoption documents, old certificates, and legal opinions confirming the entire family line. Renato was completely speechless for a few moments.
Then he started saying that it was all a setup created by Marta to deceive a vulnerable woman. The lawyer interrupted the prosecution and explained that the medical examinations performed when the will was signed proved that Mrs. Amélia was fully capable of making her own decisions. Then he continued reading.
There was also one very important condition. Part of the farm should be transformed into a shelter for mothers with young children who are homeless or facing difficulties similar to those Marta experienced. [music] The document made it clear that this was the deceased’s greatest wish. If this condition were not met, other mechanisms provided for by law would be activated to ensure its fulfillment.
Marta began to cry quietly. He immediately remembered the day he left his apartment carrying only two suitcases and without knowing where he would spend the night. He understood at that moment why Dona Amélia had made that request. She wanted to ensure that no other mother would go through the same despair without finding an open door.
[music] Renato slammed his hand on the table and stated that he would not accept that situation. He said that his aunt had been manipulated by Marta for months and that he would take the case to court. The lawyer calmly replied that he had that right, but also informed him that the will had been prepared with extreme care, precisely to avoid future disputes.
Renato left the office visibly furious. Before crossing the threshold, he turned to Marta and stated that she would not remain on that farm for long. Marta didn’t answer, she just remained seated, trying to process everything that had just happened. After Renato left, the lawyer asked her to stay a few more minutes. He explained that Mrs.
Amélia had left several documents organized to facilitate the transfer of ownership. She also mentioned that the elderly woman frequently spoke about Marta in their recent meetings. According to him, Dona Amélia said that she had finally found someone she could fully trust. Before Marta left, the lawyer handed her a folder containing copies of the will and other important documents.
He also recommended that she prepare for legal proceedings, because he believed that Renato would indeed try to overturn his aunt’s last will and testament. The lawyer’s prediction quickly came true. Less than a week later, Marta received an official notification informing her that Renato had filed a lawsuit to invalidate the will.
In the lawsuit, he claimed that Mrs. Amélia lacked sufficient lucidity when she signed the document and that Marta had influenced all of the elderly woman’s decisions during the last months of her life. The news worried Marta. She never imagined facing such a major legal battle. [music] Even so, he decided to continue living normally on the farm while awaiting the next steps from the justice system.
The days passed filled with meetings with lawyers, document deliveries, and preparations for hearings. Seu Antônio offered help whenever he could. Neighbors who knew Mrs. Amélia for many years also offered to testify about her relationship with Marta. They all said the same thing.
The relationship between the two was based on respect, [music], affection, and gratitude. At no point did anyone witness any attempt at pressure or manipulation. Despite this support, Marta remained worried. He knew that Renato had money and would do anything to get the farm back. One afternoon, while walking through the orchard with Lucas and Clara, she watched the children playing exactly as they had been since the first day they arrived there.
[music] He thought about everything that place represented now. It wasn’t just a property, it was the last gift left by her grandmother [music] and also the opportunity to fulfill the dream she carried until the last days of her life. Lucas noticed that his mother was pensive and asked if they would need to leave again. Marta bent down, hugged her two children, and replied that she would do everything in her power to protect that house.
[music] Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Renato was leaving a meeting with his lawyers, completely convinced that he would be able to overturn the will. He believed that all he had to do was convince the judge that Dona Amélia was not capable of making decisions about her own assets.
What he didn’t yet know was that his aunt herself had spent months preparing for that moment and had hidden evidence capable of definitively destroying all the lies he had built up over the years. The weeks leading up to the hearing seemed much longer than they actually were. Marta tried to maintain the farm’s routine so that Lucas and Clara could continue living peacefully, but the mere ringing of the phone or the arrival of mail was enough to make her heart race.
[music] Every day a new document would appear to sign, a new instruction from the lawyer, or some more information about the process. Even under all that pressure, she insisted on preparing breakfast for the children, monitoring their studies, and taking care of the property exactly as Dona Amélia wanted it to be done.
The orchard continued to produce, the vegetable garden was becoming more and more beautiful, and the garden that Clara had started to tend was blooming again. Seu Antônio said it seemed as if the farm had regained its will to live. Meanwhile, Renato continued spreading rumors around town that he had been deceived by his own aunt [music] and that a stranger had taken control of the family’s assets.
Some people believed the story, while others remembered that he almost never appeared on the farm before Marta arrived. [music] The comments increased as the date of the hearing approached. Marta’s lawyer, however, remained calm. In every meeting, he said that the will had been prepared with great care and that there was sufficient evidence to demonstrate that Dona Amélia made all the decisions of her own free will.
Even so, he also warned that Renato was persistent and would try to create doubts in the judge’s mind. On the day scheduled for the hearing, Marta left the farm early. Before getting into the car, [music] Lucas gave his mother a small hug and told her she didn’t need to be afraid, because Dona Amélia always said that the truth would eventually come out.
Clara placed a small flower she had picked from the garden inside her mother’s bag and asked her to take a little piece of the farm with her. Marta smiled emotionally, carefully placed the flower, and went to the forum. Upon arriving, [music] found Renato talking to his lawyers. He appeared confident and avoided looking directly at Marta.
Shortly after, everyone entered the courtroom. The judge began the proceedings by listening to the arguments presented by Renato. The nephew stated that Mrs. Amélia was a very elderly lady, emotionally fragile and easily influenced. [Music] said that Marta appeared just when she was alone and took advantage of the situation to gain her trust and convince her to change her will.
He also reiterated that the elderly woman no longer had the full capacity to make important decisions. [music] While he was speaking, Marta remained silent. His lawyer waited for the right moment to present the defense. First, he showed the medical reports produced at the time the will was signed. [music] The documents proved that Mrs.
Amélia was conscious, oriented, and fully capable of being held responsible for her own actions. Next, he presented witnesses. Seu Antônio recounted how he witnessed the relationship between Marta and Dona Amélia from the very first day. He explained that he had never witnessed any attempt at manipulation. On the contrary, she said that it was the old woman herself who insisted that Marta remain on the farm after the first week.
Some neighbors also confirmed that Mrs. Amélia returned to participating in community life after the family arrived. Everyone reported that she seemed happier and more cheerful. Renato continued to deny everything. He claimed that those people were being deceived by a very well- planned action by Marta.
The atmosphere became tense. It was then that Marta’s lawyer asked the judge for permission to present new evidence left by Mrs. Amélia herself. Renato seemed surprised. The lawyer placed a small metal box on the table, which had been found among the documents the elderly woman had organized. Inside [the music] were several flash drives, notes with dates, and a letter explaining why that material existed.
The lawyer said that for many months, Mrs. Amélia suspected that Renato might try to challenge her decisions in the future. Therefore, he began to record everything he considered important. With the judge’s permission, one of the files was played in the courtroom. The recording clearly captured Renato’s voice pressuring his aunt to sign documents related to the land.
At one point, he said that she needed to trust him, because soon she would no longer be able to manage the farm. Dona Amélia’s firm voice replied that she would never sign any papers while there were doubts about the illegal sale of part of the properties. Another recording showed Renato completely changing the tone of the conversation.
Annoyed, he said that she would end up alone and that no one would believe a woman her age. Dona Amélia replied that she preferred to face any difficulty rather than hand over her possessions to someone who had betrayed their own family. [music] Silence filled the courtroom. Renato lowered his head for a few seconds.
His lawyer tried to argue that those recordings might be out of context, but the sequence of the files left little room for doubt. Next, Marta’s lawyer presented documents obtained from the registry offices in the region. An expert explained that several signatures used on old powers of attorney did not belong to Mrs. Amélia.
The expert compared the original documents with the genuine signatures and demonstrated clear differences. Bank records and contracts were also presented that directly linked Renato to the transactions carried out without his aunt’s authorization. Gradually, the scenario began to change completely. The man who tried to portray himself as a victim came to be seen as the main person responsible for the fraud.
The judge asked Renato several questions directly. [music] In several answers, he contradicted himself. First, he stated that he never participated in the land negotiations. He later admitted that he only attended some sales as a representative of the family. He later said that everything happened to protect the property. [music] Each new explanation conflicted with the previous one.
His own lawyer had difficulty maintaining that version of events. Once all the evidence had been analyzed, Marta’s lawyer presented the last letter written by Mrs. Amélia on that subject. In it, the elderly woman explained that she decided to record the conversations because she was afraid that Renato would try to destroy her last will and testament after her death.
He also wrote that Marta never knew about the existence of these recordings and that she never participated in the preparation of that material. She also said that she chose to leave all her possessions to her granddaughter because she had finally found someone who cared about people before thinking about money.
Upon hearing those words, Marta couldn’t hold back her tears. The judge concluded the evidence-gathering phase and announced that the decision would be released later that day. Hours later, everyone returned to the room. The judge explained that the evidence presented clearly demonstrated that Mrs. Amélia had full capacity to draw up the will.
He also concluded that there was no evidence of manipulation on Marta’s part . On the contrary, the records confirmed that the elderly woman herself made all the decisions freely and consciously. He then declared the will valid in all its terms. Shortly after, he announced that the documents related to the fraud in the sale of the properties would be forwarded for criminal investigation.
The news hit Renato immediately. Even before leaving the courthouse, agents responsible for enforcing the court order approached him to begin proceedings related to accusations of document forgery, use of false powers of attorney, and illegal transactions involving the family’s land. Renato tried to protest, saying it was all a misunderstanding, but the evidence gathered over the years by Dona Amélia was too detailed to be ignored.
While he was being led away to provide the necessary explanations, Marta stood still for a few moments, [music] unable to believe what had just happened. The lawyer placed his hand on her shoulder and said that Mrs. Amélia had thought everything through long before she passed away. She knew that moment would come and did everything she could to protect not only the farm, but also the truth.
When Marta left the forum, she took a deep breath, feeling the afternoon air. For the first time since finding that small notice pinned to the church bulletin board, she had the feeling that the fear was finally beginning to fade. On the way back home, she looked out the car window, imagining the joy of Lucas and Clara when they learned that the farm would continue to be the place where they could build a new future, just as Dona Amélia had dreamed before she left.
Several months had passed since the end of the process, and the farm no longer resembled the quiet place Marta had found when she first arrived, carrying only two suitcases. and the fear of not knowing where she would sleep with her children. The fences were repaired, the roof was fixed, the orchard is producing again in full force, and the old empty rooms have been given a fresh coat of paint.
Marta made a point of closely monitoring every change. She didn’t want to turn the property into a luxury place. She simply wanted everyone who entered that place to feel the same security she felt the day Dona Amélia opened the door and gave her an opportunity. Lucas and Clara also participated in each stage. [music] Lucas helped his father Antônio with the farm work and already knew almost every corner of the property.
Clara took great care of the garden. The flowers she had planted next to her great-grandmother now occupied a large part of the main entrance and caught the attention of everyone who arrived. [music] One Saturday morning, Marta gathered some local residents, former farm employees, and people from the church where she found the announcement to officially present the new project.
She said she would fulfill Dona Amélia’s last wish, and that part of the farm would be used as a shelter for mothers with young children who were homeless or facing difficult times. He explained that the place would be more than just a roof over his head. The women would receive food, support in finding work, training courses, and the opportunity to rebuild their lives with dignity.
Many of those present were moved upon hearing that idea. Some people offered help immediately. A bricklayer said he could work a few days without charging anything. A retired teacher volunteered to give tutoring lessons to the children. A doctor in the city made his office available [with music] to assist families when needed.
Gradually, the project began to take shape with the participation of many people. Marta decided to name the shelter Casa Amélia. When he placed the sign at the entrance to the property, he stood there for a few seconds looking at those words. He remembered the first time he crossed that gate, never imagining that he was walking towards his own family.
She missed her grandmother, but she also realized that her presence remained in every decision made in that place. The first families arrived a few weeks later. The first group consisted of a young woman named Juliana and her 5-year-old son. She had lost her job and could no longer afford to pay rent. Soon after, Patricia arrived with two little girls.
Next, Rosana appeared, trying to start over after a difficult separation. Each woman had a different story, but they all shared the same look of someone who simply needed an opportunity to move forward. Marta would receive each of them on the veranda of the main house, just as Dona Amélia had done with her.
[music] He showed us the rooms, explained how the property worked, and made a point of repeating that nobody was there by choice. They all deserved respect and a second chance. Living together soon transformed the farm’s atmosphere once again . Children played in the yard, laughter echoed through the hallways, and the dinner table was full every day.
Lucas loved teaching the younger boys how to take care of the vegetable garden. [music] Clara handed out flower seedlings to those who arrived, saying that every house needed a garden to remind them that better days could always come. Seu Antônio observed everything with a discreet smile.
One afternoon, he remarked to Marta [music] that it had been many years since the farm had seemed so alive. She replied that this was only possible because a very brave lady decided to open the door for a stranger when no one else believed in her. A short time later, the day arrived for the official opening of Casa Amélia.
The city hall sent representatives, city residents attended, and even people who had known Dona Amélia for many years before made a point of participating. At the entrance [music] there was a photograph of the elderly woman smiling, surrounded by her favorite flowers that Clara had been planting since the family arrived.
[music] Marta gave a brief thank you. He recounted a bit of the farm’s history, spoke about the importance of offering opportunities to those who needed them most, and explained that the place existed because an act of trust completely changed his family’s destiny. She preferred not to go into detail about her grandmother’s entire story in front of so many people, but she made it clear that Casa Amélia was a way of keeping her grandmother’s greatest dream alive.
After the ceremony, while everyone was chatting in the garden, the family lawyer approached Marta, carrying a slightly yellowed paper envelope. He said that Dona Amélia had requested that the letter be delivered only when Casa Amélia was up and running and receiving its first families.
Marta carefully held the envelope , sat down in the old rocking chair on the porch, and slowly unfolded the paper. The handwriting was the same as she had recognized in the letters kept inside the locked room. Dona Amélia began by saying that if Marta was reading those words, it meant that she had managed to transform the pain of the past into hope for other people.
He then confessed that he had spent much of his life believing he would never have the courage to confront the biggest mistake of his life. [music] He wrote that he never stopped loving Helena, nor thinking about her for a single day. She also said that when she discovered her granddaughter’s existence, she wanted to knock on her door immediately, but the fear of hearing “no” was greater than any courage she still possessed.
Therefore, he chose a different path. He posted a simple announcement at the church because he wanted to offer help without forcing anyone to accept his presence. The letter went on to say that when he saw Marta crossing the gate with Lucas and Clara, [music] realized that God, or destiny, as each person preferred to call it, had given him one last opportunity to repair a part of the past.
Dona Amélia wrote that Marta believed she had been saved that day, [music] but the truth was exactly the opposite. In her own words, [music] the woman who needed help the most was herself. She explained that living so many years carrying guilt had turned her house into an empty place, and that hearing the voices of children running through the yard again had restored the meaning she thought she had lost forever.
In another passage, she said that Lucas and Clara brought joy back to the farm’s hallways, that Marta taught her that there were still people capable of caring for others without expecting reward, and that she finally managed to die in peace because she no longer felt completely alone. At the end of the letter there was only one last request.
Dona Amélia wrote that she hoped no mother would have to choose between protecting her children and sleeping on the street, and that no child would grow up believing that abandonment was their destiny. She asked that the door of Amélia’s house remain open whenever possible, because a simple gesture of welcome could completely change the life of an entire family.
Marta finished reading with tears in her eyes. She carefully folded the letter, held it to her chest for a few moments, and then looked out into the yard. [music] Lucas was playing ball with other children. Clara was teaching a newly arrived girl how to plant flowers near the fence. Juliana chatted animatedly with Patricia while they prepared dinner together.
[music] Bento walked slowly among them all, receiving affection from each child he met along the way. The old clock in the living room continued to tell the time. But now his voice is drawn to the conversations, the laughter, and the constant movement of the house. Marta walked to the entrance of the property and stopped in front of the sign that read “House”.
Amélia [music] took a deep breath and smiled as she realized that the old farm was no longer remembered as the home of a lonely lady. Now it was a place where mothers rediscovered hope, children regained their joy, and families began to believe again that a new beginning was possible. Just like what happened the day a homeless widow found a small handwritten notice on a church bulletin board and decided to knock on the only door that remained open for her and her children.
