Jimmy Page applied the technique not just to Robert Plant’s vocals, but to guitars, creating those layers of sound that define the band’s first two albums. ADT on guitar produced a different effect than on vocals, warmer, more physical, with that sensation that the sound occupies more space than it physically should.

 The Who used it. The Kinks adopted it. By 1968, ADT was a standard technique in British recording studios. By 1970, it was standard in American studios. By 1975, it was omnipresent in any quality rock or pop production anywhere in the world. The four-track machines with which The Beatles worked during most of their studio career did not have infinite space. Every track used for manual doubling was a track that was not available for something else. ADT freed up space. It allowed The Beatles to experiment with layers of sound in ways that would have been logistically impossible without it.

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the album that many consider The Beatles’ masterpiece, would be a fundamentally different album without ADT. Not necessarily worse, but different. The result was the Abbey Road ADT, one of the most valued plugins in the professional music production industry.

Townshend’s name appears in the credits for development of the plugin. It is the only place where Ken Townshend’s name appears in something the general public can see directly. Ken Townshend retired as chairman of the studio group in 1995. He had spent 41 years at Abbey Road. He had been present at the first Beatles session on June 6th, 1962, when he remembered the sound of McCartney’s amplifier collapsing on the studio floor like a gigantic noise of flatulence.

He had been present at the final Abbey Road sessions in August 1969 when the four Beatles, already in the process of separating, but still capable of making something extraordinary together, recorded what would turn out to be their last album together. Throughout that entire career, 41 years in the same building, Townsend never received royalties for ADT.

It was not his invention in the legal sense. He had created it during his working hours using his employer’s equipment to solve his employer’s problem. The intellectual property belonged to EMI.
