The Jacksons BROKE in TEARS Hearing Jaafar Jackson Sing… – dw

Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe. A melting like hot candle wax. Sensation. I’ve lived where we are. Oh, get both on the first dose. Don’t stop till you get enough. Nobody was ready for Jaafar Jackson singing like this. The moment people heard his voice and saw him perform as Michael Jackson, the reaction was almost immediate.

This was not just another actor playing a music legend. Jaafar, Michael Jackson’s nephew and the son of Jermaine Jackson, had spent years preparing for the role. And he knew exactly how much pressure came with stepping into his uncle’s shoes. I knew how challenging this would be to take on playing Michael Jackson.

And it was not easy. [laughter] Definitely wasn’t. I love challenges and I wanted to prove to myself, my family, and the filmmakers that I I can do this. Jaafar was only 26 when he was chosen to play Michael in the highly anticipated biopic Michael. He had no major acting credits, but there was one thing the filmmakers could not ignore, the resemblance.

I saw an article where it said that Graham King got the rights to tell Michael’s story. Yeah. My first thought was, “Who are they going to get to play Michael?” And I honestly I I think of myself. I’ll like, this is going to be really interesting. Director Antoine Fuqua saw something in Jaafar that went beyond his face.

He saw the way he moved, the way he held himself, and the natural connection he had to Michael. But looking like Michael was only the beginning. Jaafar had to learn how to sound like him, too. He spent months working on Michael’s speaking voice and singing style, studying old interviews and performances, and repeating the smallest details.

Every time I would rehearse, I would always sing out loud. Jaafar’s never acted before, and we did a screen test. Right. Right. And he walked out, and you you felt it. And then we put him on camera, and then me and Graham threw a question at him to see what he would if he could stay in character.

And he responded as Michael. He He turned around, the whole crew was crying. I wanted to prove to myself, my family, and the filmmakers that I I can do this. I started to rehearse for hours and hours upon hours until one single move was right. Dancing until my feet would bleed or them go numb.

There’s so many times I would wake up sore, but I’d say, “Should I go rehearse? Should I just take a break and let the body relax?” And then that’s part of my mind feeling like, “No, what would Michael do?” He worked on his breathing, his tone, his pronunciation, and even the way Michael held a microphone.

And then came the dancing. Jaafar trained with choreographers who had actually worked with Michael, repeating famous routines again and again until the movements became natural. It was not enough to simply copy the steps. He had to make them look effortless, just like Michael did. When we walked in, you know, going into it, I didn’t think it would be that hard.

I knew it would be somewhat challenging, but not as hard as I it came out to be. The flooring is important, the shoes you’re wearing, and that was something new for me, being able to dance in loafers. And the more I studied his movements and looked at footage, it seemed as if it was a trick illusion in in that sense.

He was such a fan of that, of having that element of magic within a performance, to trick the audience to think it’s something unusual going on. The pressure was enormous, because Jaafar was not playing a random character. He was playing his own uncle, one of the most famous performers the world has ever known.

Every move would be compared to Michael. Every note would be judged. Every little detail would be noticed. But Jaafar had something most actors would never have. He grew up around Michael and knew him personally. He had seen his uncle perform, watched him rehearse, and spent time around the man behind the superstar. That personal connection became an important part of his preparation.

What are your memories of your uncle? I remember just growing up and we would have family time, you know, there he Michael would come over to where I was growing up at Hayvenhurst, and we’d have some some days where we’d all get together, play family game day. We’d have wonderful times at Neverland and and just had playing hide and go seek, getting as much candy on the rides, watching movies. It was all fun.

Then came the singing. Jaafar has explained that his voice was blended with Michael’s original vocals for some of the concert scenes, but the work behind that sound was very real. He had spent months training his voice and studying Michael’s vocal style so closely that the final result could feel almost unreal.

And this is where people started paying attention. Are you singing Michael songs or getting a little Michael or both? How does it work? It was It was fun because we When I was doing all the performances, I was actually singing out live in the microphone on top of Michael’s track. So, it’s a blend of my vocal and Michael’s, however they edited, you know, both of my my vocal and Michael’s together.

But even, you know, the moments where there’s no back backing track, it’s actually me singing, you know, the a cappellas, which was really fun to to do. Once the first footage began appearing, fans immediately noticed the voice, the movements, the expressions, and that familiar energy. For some viewers, it was almost like watching Michael come back to the screen.

[singing] But Jaafar was never trying to become Michael in real life. He was trying to understand him well enough to bring the character to life. That difference mattered. He knew he could never truly replace his uncle, so instead, he focused on honoring him. We were there Wait, that’s you? [laughter] THAT’S ME.

THAT’S WILD. We were there from sun sunset to sunrise for two nights, all through the night shooting. Dancing all night long? All night long on cement, which was [laughter] It was quite fun. I heard your foot your feet bled during some of this. There were some moments that yeah, they were they were they would go numb cuz it was also freezing, but [laughter] to be in that actual location and to see the zombies around and there were so many times I couldn’t really believe that I was recreating one

of the most iconic or the most iconic video of all time and to just be in the same space where Michael was was I had to really tell myself I’m really here. Wow, it’s it’s incredible. His family was also watching closely. His father, Jermaine Jackson, supported him throughout the process. While his grandmother, Katherine Jackson also praised the casting.

For Jaafar, that kind of support meant even more because this was not simply another acting job. It was his family’s story. So importantly, I was given a a lot of notes, private notes of Michael’s that he would like his journaling and that really opened up my mind to really feel how he was feeling in a lot of those moments and just see the mantras he would create for himself and really even meditate on some of those to achieve something or to to channel to to write songs and it really opened my mind to how

he was so deeply sensitive to everything going on around the world, to people and that were in need and how to channel that through his music and bring people together and that really uh surprised me. That was one of the things. And perhaps that is why his performance has attracted so much attention.

Jaafar did not walk into this role expecting it to be easy. He spent years preparing, studying Michael’s music, practicing the dances, working on his voice, and learning the smallest details. The world may have been expecting an actor who looked like Michael Jackson. Instead, they got someone who had spent years studying the man behind the legend.

I never dreamed to be an actor or even thought of playing him, but I knew it was a calling. Embodying Michael, I really had to earn the role and prove to the filmmakers that I was capable of of becoming Michael. Jaafar Jackson still has his own identity, his own voice, and his own career ahead of him.

But for a moment, when he steps onto that stage as Michael Jackson, the difference becomes surprisingly difficult to see. And that is why nobody was ready for Jaafar singing because the question was never just can he look like Michael? The real question was can he make us feel like we are watching, Michael? Again.

And from what fans have seen so far, Jafar may have come much closer than anyone expected.
