I I I couldn’t believe it. I uh I got so emotional. He became Michael on that screen. It brought tears to my eyes. I couldn’t believe it. He’s incredible tonight. To know that the legacy, the Jackson family legacy continues on. Start crying cuz I did. I did when I saw it. I couldn’t believe it.

Really? Really? What was What was the part of the film that made you so emotional? Just watching Just watching Jafar out there do his thing and you think I’m thinking I’m watching my brother out there, you know. How proud are you of Jafar? Oh, I can’t even explain. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Just he’s made us all so proud. It’s unexplainable. I think what really and truly honestly impressed me was the fact that Jafar made you believe and think that it was Mike and you you look at him and you forget that it’s Jar and you think it’s your brother. Michael’s own family cried watching Joffar.

Not only because they missed him, because for a second they didn’t. These are people who grew up right beside Michael who knew his laugh, his pauses, the way he moved through a room. And somehow watching Joffar perform, that same family started forgetting the difference. That’s what happened when the Jackson family sat down to watch Jafar Jackson become Michael.

This is the story of how one young man spent years disappearing into his uncle’s shadow and came out the other side as a mirror. This role was in incredibly physically demanding. Initially started with Rich and Tone, seeing if I had it in me to pull off the performances. But within that time, I really learned a lot about myself that even though I wasn’t pulling off a lot of the moves or knowing the meaning behind it, I still tried it again and again, over and over until I got it right. Or even if

I didn’t get it right, I was still trying it. For most of his life, Joffar wasn’t chasing this. He was raised carefully, almost protected by his father, Germaine Jackson, who understood better than anyone what the Jackson name could do to a person. While the world speculated about his resemblance to Michael, Jafar was busy with something completely different. Golf.

Never. I’ve never wanted to be an actor. Um, and I I initially told him, you know, I’ve I I grew up wanting to play golf. I I got into music. Jafar was living a quiet life far from cameras playing golf. Then the Michael Jackson biopic came along and everything changed. Jafar Jackson playing his uncle Michael Jackson is out of this world.

He completely becomes the man. His mannerisms, his smile here. Sometimes when he like turns around some of the dancing, the singing, he is out of this world performing as his uncle. Jafar Jackson gave one of the best performances I’ve seen in a long time. He is just outstanding. When Jafar was confirmed as the lead, the internet didn’t wait to judge.

The word nepotism spread everywhere before a single scene had been shot. Critics said no relative could ever play Michael without bias. It got loud and it got personal. So, the quote tweet replying to that says, “Jafar’s career stops and ends with Michael. He only got the job cuz he’s family.” And that’s just downright dirty and disrespectful.

Now, here’s the thing. I’m not going to sit here and say there’s no nepotism involved whatsoever because at the end of the day, he is a Jackson. His father is the brother of Michael Jackson. Yes, he is a Nepo baby by default. Yes, he had a higher chance of getting the role over many other people who probably auditioned to play Michael Jackson. But Jafar didn’t respond.

He didn’t give interviews defending himself. He went quiet and got to work because he believed that if words couldn’t change anyone’s mind, the performance eventually would. And created this re research room where I put everything I can find on Michael. all of his dislikes, all of his likes, what he what he loves, what he loves to eat, what he doesn’t like, you know.

So, it I just wanted to familiarize myself with everything about Michael uh in a place where he lived and where I grew up as well. It’s a timeline from 1962 all the way until 1996, which is the year I was born. What followed wasn’t a few months of preparation. It was years. He studied Michael the way Michael himself used to study other performers, breaking down every motion, every pause, every energy shift until imitation turned into instinct.

He worked with a movement coach to rebuild not just the dancing, but the voice, the softness, the rhythm, the way it seemed to live inside the body before a word was even spoken. It was very silly to my own ears, you know, when I was trying to do that. I really read a lot of books uh in his voice and I each book I got better basically and you know you get more used to it and sometimes I’d be out like in a grocery store and I’d be talking to someone but I’d naturally respond and I’m like wait that sounded kind of like Michael but I

wasn’t trying to do it intentionally. So I wanted to get to that that place where I wasn’t thinking about it like putting it on. It would just come out naturally and it took a lot of time. Some of that training happened somewhere most people wouldn’t expect. Joffar spent time living and rehearsing in Michael’s old bedroom at the Jackson family’s in Cino Estate.

Taking that time to Havenhurse and setting up mirrors and the same dancing room uh Michael would train in. I think that really was a spiritual journey for me just to be in that same energy to sit in that space but also just to dance for hours and hours every day and look at it as a as a full-time job.

It was life-changing for me to to have that experience there. The role never really turned off. He wasn’t just learning to move like Michael. He was learning to sit in silence like him. The moonwalk brought its own kind of pressure. It’s a move the whole world has already memorized frame by frame. One clumsy step and the internet would notice instantly.

So Jafar didn’t rush it. He broke it down to the smallest details. the shift of weight, the drag of the foot, the pause between each motion, and repeated it until it stopped feeling copied and started feeling like his own. The moonwalk, uh, I mean, as a kid, I always used to try and do it, but it’s different when you’re doing as a kid to when then you’re trying to do it just like Michael and look just like him doing it.

The moonwalk is very challenging for many different reasons. The flooring is important with the shoes you’re wearing. And that was something new for me is being able to dance in loafers and getting used to that. Then came the recreation of Michael’s 1988 human nature performance at Wembley Stadium.

One of the most studied concert moments in pop history. Fans don’t just remember that performance, they compare everything to it. Stepping into that moment meant stepping into a shadow bigger than most entire careers. My favorite scene of the movie is when he’s performing Human Nature and for some reason in the theater that I was in. Um, it was packed.

Every single seat was taken taken and I was with my friend and for some reason the audio was so loud and I could hear like the cheering from the movie and human nature and the bass of that song playing at the same time it for the street scenes. The production even returned to the real location where one of Michael’s most iconic dance sequences was filmed.

Jafar and the crew filmed through two freezing nights, dancing on cold cement until sunrise with his feet aching and going numb between takes. Same exact location for two nights all through the night. And we actually had a full moon on one of those nights. It was just crazy. That’s the kind of Michael Jackson magic. You had a full moon.

Had a full moon and it was it was it was cold. I know he he shot during the summer, but just being at that location, seeing the zombies around me. Yeah. Was that was like I mean that’s one of my favorite videos other than Smooth Criminal, but that to be in the loca the real location was incredible.

But nothing prepared the family for the moment they actually saw him on screen fully transformed. The room didn’t react right away. Nobody spoke. For a second, it didn’t look like an actor playing a role. It looked like Michael was simply back in the room. one time. There’s a lot of people out there imitating Michael Jackson and they do a great job.

But Jafar did not imitate Michael Jackson. He became Michael Jackson and his performance is impeccable. I mean I I told him Jafar, wow. He said that’s great coming from you, Uncle Marlin, and coming from my uncles. Jackie Jackson later described the moment the brothers watched together, saying the tears came almost instantly.

It felt in that instant like they were seeing their brother again. Tito Jackson admitted he could barely process what he was looking at, saying it felt almost too close to real. Marlon Jackson didn’t call it imitation. He said Joffar had genuinely become Michael on that screen. Watching the movie sometime we we think we’re watching Michael up there.

That’s how good he is. That’s incredible. And so what do you think Michael would think of of tonight? to be so proud of him tonight to know that the legacy the Jackson family legacy continues on to start crying cuz I did. I did when I saw it. I couldn’t believe it. We thought we were looking at her.

We couldn’t believe it. That’s how good he was. He was so close. Yeah. Yeah. Was he called me uncle? Did I do I said you did great for me? Yeah. Even Prince Jackson, Michael’s own son, was visibly shaken watching his cousin recreate his father’s most famous choreography.

He later praised the dedication behind the performance, saying it went beyond copying movements and reached something closer to capturing the man’s actual spirit. I think one of the most magical things about this film is for those of us that were lucky enough to grow up with the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons. Hopefully, it will reinstigate that feeling of nostalgia and fun and family.

And for those of us like myself and younger that never got to experience that. I hope that it contextualizes the growth and the rise to stardom and the hard work and effort that my father put into it. My father and my family. Hearing those stories, seeing them, and seeing it emulated in my cousin Jafar and him taking all of that work and dedication and time really put into perspective, you know, this was not easy to achieve.

And to the levels that they achieved and how much work and dedication went in there all while being a family man, being a man of the people, and giving back, uh, I don’t know how he did it. I think what’s the most interesting thing about the film, seeing it 14 times, is I don’t ever get bored of it, even though I know what’s going to happen.

And every time I’ve watched it, I’ve noticed something new. And I was there every day on set, so I knew what we filmed and I knew the shots and the scenes, but the way when it comes all pieced together through post-prouction, I noticed more nuances, I was like, “Oh, I guess I saw him do that, but I didn’t notice how important that was.” And then there was Catherine Jackson, Michael’s mother.

Mother has seen it. Mother’s here tonight. Catherine Jackson making a rare appearance. The film was phenomenal. I said, “Really, Grandma? Like, you really think so?” Said, “You were so good.” Oh, you were so good. Her approval meant more than any critic’s opinion ever could because she remembered Michael before the fame and before the world turned him into a legend.

When she compared her own memories of her son to what she saw in Joffar, she said there were moments she genuinely couldn’t tell the difference. has seen it and mother’s here tonight. She’s not doing the carpet, but she’s here tonight. And yes, yes, she lo she loves it. She she felt and really thought Jafar did an excellent job.

And of course, everybody’s um congratulating him on such a fabulous job. I it’s amazing to me how wonderful he was. I don’t think you can say enough about what Jafar did. I think what really and truly honestly impressed me was the fact that Jafar made you believe and think that it was Mike and you you look at him and you forget that it’s Jafar and you think it’s your brother.

So I was highly impressed with the work that he put into it and how he delivered it on the screen. Did Did it feel Did you feel emotional watching it? I cried three times. Really? For Jafar, hearing that reaction from his family meant more than any review ever could. He later said the support from his father and the rest of the family was the only reason he was able to pull off something this overwhelming.

Knowing his grandmother believed in what he’d done gave him something no amount of public praise could replace. seeing Jafar on the screen, my son. When the most proudest father on the planet, I bring these names up because Jafar’s performance, I thought I was looking at my brother, Michael. I felt that Jafar had it in him and I wanted him to really know what he was going up against cuz Michael’s shoes are a tough set of shoes to fill.

But at the same time, I know Jafar, he’s he’s been um just in a wonderful human being and a very true talent. Sports, anything he can do if you put his mind to it. But I’m just the most proudest father ever. This story was never just about a movie. Underneath the performance, there was real family tension.

Reports from a private screening suggest Germaine and his sister Janet clashed over how parts of Michael’s story were being told. Actually, Janet Jackson hates the Michael Jackson movie. Yes, allegedly. Uh, why? Oh, you know she hates that movie. Well, for starters, she’s not. She should. She got eyes. Wait, what’ you say, Bart? She’s not in it.

I mean, but she’s a Jackson. She is a Jackson. The premiere was the other day. Jermaine and everybody was there. They let the whole movie play and allegedly at the end Janet had a few choice words about everything under the sun. From the makeup that was done, from some of the acting that was displayed, how some of the characters walked, how they talked.

She was just very critical of the film. But Germaine stood firm defending both the film and his son because for him this wasn’t only entertainment. He had lived through the early Jackson 5 years alongside Michael. This was memory, not fiction. Germaine had to say something because you know his son is the one that’s playing Michael.

What’s his name? Jafar. Jafar. His son is playing him. So Germaine stood on business. Said you shut the up. Get the out. You’re going to miss the run. You’re going to miss the wave. And just move it. Disagreement in this family was never really about a lack of love. It was about how carefully they all still guard the memory of someone they lost far too soon.

In the end, Joffar didn’t just play a role. He carried a responsibility that belonged to an entire family and somehow he made the people who knew Michael best believe even for a moment that he was standing in the room with them again.
