He didn’t just play Michael Jackson.  He reincarnated into him. When Jafar Jackson stepped onto the rehearsal floor, he wasn’t just learning moves.  He brought the King of Pop back to life. You look stylish, handsome.  Nice to see you. From bloody socks after rehearsals to record-breaking billion-dollar box office collections—his acting has amazed the world.

To train and rehearse, work with acting coaches, and practice choreography of many different movements. This is how a humble nephew turned into a global icon that everyone is talking about today. Many of my relatives are into sports , but the main thing for us is music.  So, I don’t know. Tireless work on the site.

  18 takes, three days of filming in a row, swollen knees that healed overnight, and back on set the next morning without any complaints.  This is just one dance scene of many that Jafar performed alone during the production period from January to May 2024 .  Fuqua made sure that the filming process was quite intense.  Long shots, no screen previews, and no digital tricks.

John Logan’s script perfectly combined large-scale dance numbers and intimate studio scenes, giving Jafar space between the two styles of filming. Meanwhile, Jafar underwent numerous makeup and hair tests, trying on prosthetics and wigs that matched Michael’s facial features in different decades.    The additional filming increased post-production time, allowing Jafar to rework two important vocal scenes.

  But to dance, he immediately headed to the estate’s rehearsal hall.  The floor at Havenhurst remembered decades of training, where the same rotations were performed over and over again .  Jafar found his rhythm right there, practicing for weeks in the same hall of mirrors where Michael honed his moves. The house was filled with the aroma of polished floors and the smell of rehearsals left over from decades past .

  However, he was not looking for atmosphere.  He claimed that the entire process was purely practical, not spiritual.  His colleagues on the set still noticed how he had changed, becoming calmer and much more focused.  For Jafar, Havenhurst was not a museum or a shrine. Havenhurst was simply a workshop where work was done every day. The mirrors in this workshop reflected two generations standing in the same place at the same time, decades apart: an uncle and a nephew.

  Practice alone.  Although Fuqua himself had not yet made a final decision on who would play Michael Jackson, Jafar worked alone in a rented studio, surrounded by mirrors, looking at himself through a computer screen and rehearsing a role that he had not yet been offered. It took two whole years of independent training without spectators, without feedback, just pure practice.

  He privately collected recordings of concerts, paying attention to transitions and momentary decisions, not just the dances themselves. Michael’s personal diaries opened the way for him, because one phrase about fear became his only emotional stimulus.  The way he held the microphone, the way he adjusted his jacket during verses, the way he took a breath between phrases—Jafar paid attention to every detail.

  He compiled a timeline from Jackson 5 commercials to the History collection, watched Motown 25 countless times, and could point out every editing glitch before it happened.  He also followed another line: how Michael borrowed Fred Astaire’s grace and precision and transformed them into something else. Sitting on a folding chair with a notepad on his lap, Jafar filled page after page with notes, timestamps, and questions every day.

Gradually, individual dance movements ceased to be separate.  They began to form sentences, and each speech, interpreted accordingly, told its own story.  Go beyond exhaustion.  16 full rehearsals of the Motown 25 number, and choreographers Rich and Tone Talawega—two men who worked directly with Michael—stood with their arms crossed, clearly unimpressed.

  They only needed perfect freedom, where the mind loses control over the body. From constant rehearsals, his feet developed such calluses that they had to be bandaged , but he didn’t stop .  One day during training, in the middle of a rotation, his calves buckled and he fell to the floor.  He immediately got up, pushed the pain away, and started all over again .

Balthazar simply danced for hours every day, seeing it as a full-time job. After three months, Jafar developed muscle memory and fluency to the point where he could perform the entire concert program without stopping.  Rich and Toun Talauega finally gave him something more valuable than empty praise.    A tacit permission to continue on the path to your dream, because only a few have been able to overcome this obstacle to it.

Invisible hours in the studio.  His voice did not appear on its own. He created it by making many mistakes, note by note at the piano. While other teenagers played and had fun, he spent countless hours practicing chords, listening to classic R&B and solo arrangements until his fingers ached and his throat burned from vocal exercises.

Instead of appearing on the reality show “Life with the Jacksons” when the cameras rolled that year, he went to practice in a small room at the end of the hall because he realized that failures don’t need an audience.  After receiving only a tiny credit in Tito’s video ” Love One Another” in 2021, he learned about behind-the-scenes magic like light signals and takes.

  At 22, he had spent thousands of hours without any mention in the credits, without even realizing what was happening. Bound by blood. Jaafar was born in Los Angeles on a July day, and no one present at his birth could have imagined that he would one day sing songs in front of crowds of thousands .  This was Jaafar, the second son of Jermaine Jackson and Alejandra Genevieve Oaziaza.

Jaafar walked like someone who really knew those kitchens and rehearsal rooms well.    It was also announced that he would be joined by an all-star cast: Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Nia Long as Katherine, Miles Teller as John Branca, Kendrick Sampson as Quincy Jones, and Giuliano Cruvaldi as the youngest member of the Jackson 5.

The news made headlines worldwide within hours , but Jaafar was not celebrating.  He turned off his cell phone and spent two days in a row in his apartment, silently staring at the ceiling. Millions will watch and judge whether he can honor his uncle’s name. Touched by family.    It’s not just that Katherine Jackson approved him for the role.

Jaafar even dedicated an entire extra monitor in his apartment solely for his father’s commentary.    The real test came when he showed the draft version of the film to his family. Catherine was silent for 20 minutes, then admitted that for a moment she almost forgot that she was watching her own grandson play.

  Your own way.  Jaafar’s first song that was not related to his uncle was released on June 28, 2019.  “Got Me Singing,” a collaboration with Hardy Indigo, was a cheerful Latin pop track filmed on colorful steps in Rio.  Its chorus was accompanied by Brazilian funk beats and beach- style visuals.  Jaafar co-wrote the chorus , trying to create something less anthemic than Jackson’s songs.

The reaction was quite subdued.  Average listening figures, radio rotation, but no viral success.  However, Jaafar did not seek to achieve success with this particular single.  He was simply trying to figure out whether he could perform on stage without being overshadowed by his own name.  Overall, the result of this experiment was positive.

  The album, titled Famous, was canceled before it was released, but the real value of the experience was in everything he learned about vocal techniques and microphone work. Revival of the classics. Vinyl records of the album Off the Wall sold out in London and Los Angeles for the first time in many years due to the unexpected effect of the film’s release.

Streaming services witnessed a similar phenomenon: some of Michael’s older songs had three times more daily streams a week after the film’s premiere.  TikTok was also flooded with videos that showed Jafar’s on-screen performances alongside archival footage of Michael, turning the tribute into a historical event.

Studio sessions, vocal work, and choreographic innovations that changed pop music many years ago.  For those who have never seen Michael live, this film was a true debut.  Whereas for everyone else, it was a reacquaintance .  This cultural wave became noticeable through surges in catalog sales and global playlists.

  And Lionsgate instantly felt that pressure.  Massive online craze. 116 million views in just 72 hours.  This was a reaction to the unexpected release of the first teaser in November 2025. Lionsgate’s marketing team spent the entire day staring at monitors and updating the ever- increasing counter.  In the online world, fans stopped to compare Jafar’s silhouette frame by frame with Michael in footage from a decade ago .

  Jafar learned about the statistics during a lunch break in the rehearsal studio, and took it more with fear than joy, for a simple reason: the trailer had instantly skyrocketed expectations, and there was nothing he could do about it. That evening he continued working as usual, circling until his calf began to cramp terribly again.

  He paid no attention to anything but his dancing.  The trailer had done its job, and now Jafar had to do everything he could to ensure that his on-screen image lived up to those expectations. Facing harsh criticism.  27%.  This was the number that appeared on review aggregators on the first Tuesday morning, gradually increasing to 35% over the following weeks.

During the review of the cautious approach to the scenario, the terms “ superficial” and “ filtered” were often used. Jafar glanced at the headlines only once, alone in his hotel room, and then closed his laptop without finishing a single review. However, despite the negative reviews, one thing remained the same. Compliments on his physical and vocal transformation.

  The word ” eerily similar” was repeated in various media.  One of the critics was honest in his words.    A brilliant performance wasted in an attempt to make a film that is unwilling to take any risks.  Jafar didn’t argue.  He did everything he could. He was not responsible for the carefulness of the script .

  He sent Fuqua only four words. I said I would try. Fuqua’s response was immediate.  You didn’t try, you did. Bad reviews never bothered him. He knew from the very beginning that this would be the case .  A fan favorite.  That night in Chicago, teenagers were leaving a crowded movie theater, singing “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin'” at the top of their lungs in the theater lobby.

  Phones were already bursting with group messages about how much they loved the movie.  That’s how you find out that in every city in the world, critics could have trashed “Michael,” but ordinary people gave it an A-minus and wouldn’t let it pass without publicity.  Late at night, Jafar saw thousands of reactions to ” Michael” on various social media forums.

Heart emoji, capital letters screaming with delight. A mother who wrote that her daughter now wants to listen to Michael Jackson’s music for the first time.  He bypassed all the technicalities and read the messages in their true, unedited form.  This had nothing to do with criticizing his acting skills.  It was a grateful audience, thanking him simply for bringing back the one they missed, at least for a while.

Stunned the director .  A folding chair, one camera, no costumes, no soundtrack, no insurance.  That’s all Jafar had when he auditioned for a role that thousands of actors around the world were competing for at the same time.  After two years of international casting, once director Antoine Fuqua saw the Jafar audition tape, he stopped the playback midway and went back.

  Not because of the facial resemblance, but because of the hands, the way they lay, the way they moved unconsciously when the character spoke.  As producer Graham King noted about himself, it was an organic incarnation of Michael in the sense that Jafar unconsciously reproduced Michael’s speaking style, rhythm, and stage presence .

  26-year-old Jafar suddenly felt like the burden of an entire film with a budget of $100 million fell on his shoulders .  After the news was announced, he received calls non-stop for 6 hours straight.  Then Jermaine’s voice came on the line, saying only two things: “Prove it.” Breaking biopic records: Bohemian Rhapsody, Oppenheimer, Straight Outta Compton.

By the time it was released, Michael had quietly broken all records for any biopic, earning twice as much in international markets as it did domestically, a clear testament to Michael’s popularity, even after so many years, that knows no age or language barriers .  The success of “Michael” did not go unnoticed by Lionsgate shareholders during the next earnings conference call.

Jafar was taciturn and refrained from commenting during press releases that praised the film for breaking one milestone after another.  As for the contribution to ” Michael,” Michael himself was number one, Fuqua was number two, the cast and crew were number three, and he himself was number four or five, whichever you prefer.
