Everything We Know About Michael 2… And Why Jaafar Faces Even More Pressure – dw

On August 6th, 2026, Lionsgate made an announcement that sent shock waves through Hollywood. Michael 2 is officially moving forward. Production will begin by the end of this year or early 2027 with a release targeted for late 2027 or early 2028. But here’s the thing, this isn’t just another sequel. It’s a billion dollar gamble.

The first $1 billion of the global box office. And now Jaffer Jackson has to do it all again. But this time, the pressure is even greater because the sequel won’t just cover Michael’s music. It will explore the most controversial chapters of his life, and Jaffer will be at the center of it all. We’re going to talk a little uh Michael 2 here.

So, Lionsgate Film Chief talks Michael 2. I found these comments to be a little interesting. I’m going to go start with Deadlines article here. Uh, as Michael 2 comes together, Lionsgate film chief is confident studio can pull off another big and satisfying movie for a global audience. If I was the film chief, I’d probably say the same thing.

Right. Um, the first film, Michael, wasn’t just a success. It was a phenomenon. Directed by Antoine Fugqua and starring Jaffer Jackson, Michael’s real life nephew. The film opened to record-breaking numbers. It earned over $1 billion at the global box office, surpassing Bohemian Raps City to become the highest grossing music biopic of all time.

It also beat Oppenheimer to become the highest grossing biopic overall. So when the film ended with the title card, his story continues. But I just want to do my own thing. Just have all these ideas in my head. Just got to get them out and do it, Michael. Now, Lionsgate needed the first film to reach a major milestone before greenlighting a sequel.

Reports indicated that the film needed to earn at least 700 million worldwide for a second film to be approved. The film surpassed that target by a staggering margin. In August 2026, during a Q1 earnings call, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fodilson confirmed that the sequel is moving forward. Production is set to begin by the end of 2026 or early 2027 and the studio is targeting a release at the end of 2027 or the first half of 2028 movie than I thought.

Oh, and 25 to 30 to 75% of a movie that still has to be completed. That means there’s a lot of room to delve a little deeper and I’m interested if they’re going to do that. What do you think? Well, if that I I think already what what are we at $700 million plus? I think for sure they’re probably going to do that.

And um you know I to be honest I really like Michael Fodelson said we are mostly focused right now on how to make sure we can deliver at the right price the biggest best sequel. That is what the audience is going to want and deserve after the experience we gave them the first time. Do you think Michael 2 can live up to the original? Drop your thoughts below.

He says, uh, Foggesson noted that the studio has 25 to 30% of a second movie already shot, which is great. So, obviously, there will have to be some there’ll be some benefit. Ultimately, we’ll make sure that we make a big and satisfying movie for audiences once again. Lion’s Gate has been surprisingly open about Michael 2, but the details they’ve shared reveal a sequel that’s already half finishedish before filming even begins.

The studio confirmed that 25 to 30% of the sequel is already shot using footage from the first film’s production that was cut due to a legal settlement. The production is set to begin by the end of 2026 or early 2027 with a release targeted for late 2027 or early 2028. But here’s the twist. The footage that was cut from the first film, including massive musical sequences, is now being repurposed for the sequel.

And the sequel will cover material that the first film couldn’t touch. They actually don’t. I I I actually think this is kind of interesting. He says, uh, Ferguson noted that the studio has 25 to 30% of a second movie already shot, which is great. So, obviously, there will have to be some there will be some benefit. Ultimately, we’ll make sure that we make a big and satisfying movie for audiences.

Once again, here’s the most surprising detail about Michael 2. A significant portion of the sequel is already in the can. When Lionsgate chairman Adam Fodilson spoke during the company’s earnings call on August 6th, 2026, he revealed that the studio had a number of sequences, particularly some big musical sequences that were shot previously that are almost sure to be incorporated.

He added, “We certainly will be able to take advantage of some stuff that we previously shot. being repurposed comes from the first film’s production. The original cut of Michael included scenes covering the 1993 allegations against Jackson, including a planned opening sequence depicting the police raid on Neverland Ranch.

But attorneys for the Jackson estate discovered a clause in the settlement agreement with Jordan Chandler that prohibited his depiction or mention in any film project. The clause forced a costly reshoot with estimates ranging from $15 million to $50 million to rework the final act. I think the film the film takes place, you know, from the ’60s to 1988.

It does not go into the first allegations in like 2005. So basically, we we center it on the makings of Michael. So it’s an intimate portrait of who Michael the legal clause is the reason the sequel already has so much footage. According to reports, the settlement agreement with Jordan Chandler included a provision that Chandler could not be depicted or even mentioned in any film project about Michael Jackson.

That clause forced director Antoine Fugqua to cut the entire third act of the first film. The re-shoots were extensive enough to push the film’s budget to nearly $200 million. But those cut scenes, particularly the musical numbers, have now found a new home in the sequel. entire third act of the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic has to be re-shot over a legal dispute with one of Jackson’s accusers in so will Michael 2 actually cover while Lionsgate hasn’t confirmed the exact timeline the sequel is expected to pick up where the first

film left off with Jackson’s 1987 bad tour the next chapter could explore the dangerous and invincible eras his marriage to Lisa Marie Preszley his children and the later years of his life previously noted that there is a massive amount of music and life experiences separate and apart from allegations that would fill more than a second movie on its own.

The biggest question hanging over the sequel is whether it will address the child’s sexual abuse allegations that shadowed Jackson’s later years. The first film avoided them entirely due to the legal clause, but the sequel won’t have the same escape route. The timeline of the sequel naturally leads to the allegations, and [snorts] critics have already questioned whether the film can handle them without sanitizing Jackson’s legacy.

Men’s Journal noted the not so subtle elephant in the room. The severity of these allegations are likely not as appealing to as many movie goers. Wondering why the Michael movie did not touch on any of the allegations? This is why. So, in the original script, the entire third act was going to be about the police raid that happened in Neverland.

However, during the production of the film, the estate lawyers actually found an old legally binding clause from the settlement which explicitly forbids the depiction or mention of Chandler or the abuse allegations in any form of movie, which means it remains unclear whether director Antoine Fugqua will return for the sequel.

Fugqua was involved in the first film’s production and was present during the re-shoots. He has said publicly that he would be open to a sequel, telling one outlet, “It would kill me if somebody else did it.” But Lionsgate has not confirmed his involvement for Michael 2. Given the scale of the project and the pressure to match the first film success, his return would be a significant factor in the sequel’s quality.

Another key detail from the earnings call, the budget is still undetermined. Fodilson told analysts, “We’re not ready to give guidance on the budget yet.” However, he emphasized that the studio would be able to take advantage of some stuff that we previously shot. The first film’s budget was nearly $200 million. The sequel’s cost could be lower due to the pre-existing footage or higher depending on how much new material they shoot.

Finally have a release window for Michael part two. And it actually might be sooner than most people expected. Lionsgate has set a target release window for Michael 2. The film is expected to hit theaters by the end of 2027 or during the first half of 2028. The timeline suggests a tight schedule, but with 25 to 30% already filmed, the production may move faster than expected.

Lionsgate just dropped huge news for part two of the Michael movie. They said it is going to be epic. It is in the works. We have a release date and so I hope you do not hang up your red leather jackets and your sparkly gloves. Here’s everything we know so far. They said that production is set to start later this year, that the film will be released in late 2027 or early 2028.

Jaffer Jackson is the one constant. He’s confirmed to return as Michael Jackson in the sequel, but he’s also filming Supermax in Australia with Will Smith. The tight schedule could create a conflict. However, Jaffer has said he’s ready to return to the role, telling one outlet.

His story is not finished being told. It’s in the early process of figuring that out. His dual commitments, action star and king of pop will test his stamina and versatility is just the beginning. So what will we see in the next phase of this? Oh, I’m excited to see. There’s so much to tell Michael’s story. You can’t fit all into one movie.

It’s possible to tell in 2 hours. So I’m I’m definitely looking forward to to seeing uh what will come about in that way. And and it’s definitely making. Is that already done or you’re making it now? When what is the latest? It’s in the early development right now. Oh, okay. Yeah. So, you’re ready.

You still have to stay in Michael mode. Yeah, that’s right. I do. The first film was a gamble. No one knew if Jaffer could carry a major motion picture. He had never acted before. He had no formal training. He was a golfer, not a movie star. He had to earn the role through a 2-year audition process. But the sequel is different.

Now the world knows what he’s capable of and the world will expect him to do it again but this time with even higher stakes. See the auditioning process was definitely not uh traditional. I would say it was it was almost 2 years and it it started with what is acting and what how do I go about in learning what that is and I was put around uh incredible people an acting coach named Angela Gibbs who the first film’s critical reception was harsh.

Rotten Tomatoes critics gave it just 40%. Reviews called the film sanitized and accused it of avoiding the allegations. But here’s the twist. Even the harshest critics praised Jaffer’s performance. Variety’s David Rooney wrote that which Michael projected a childlike innocence. The Telegraph India called his performance Oscar worthy.

The praise for Jaffer was universal even when the film wasn’t. I thought your father was amazing. That boy don’t get nominated for met Jackson. Yeah, man. I mean to to your movie. You’re amazing in that film. Jafar is LIKE that wasn’t just a movie ending. It was a promise and that promise creates a burden.

The audience now expects the sequel to deliver the parts of Michael’s life that the first film couldn’t touch. the allegations, the controversies, the dark years. Critics have already questioned whether the sequel can handle these topics without sanitizing the story. We’re getting that part two, y’all. We almost there. Here’s the challenge that every actor faces after playing an icon.

Can they escape the role? Many actors who play real life figures get typ cast for the rest of their careers. But Jaffer is taking a different path. By choosing Supermax, an action thriller, he’s showing the industry that he’s versatile. But the Michael sequel will always be the role that defines him. And the sequel will only cement that association.

I love you. The first film made Jaffer Jackson a star, but the sequel could define his career. A successful sequel could cement him as a leading man. A critical failure could typ cast him forever and is a test of his versatility. The question is simple. Will the sequel make him a Hollywood icon or trap him in his uncle’s shadow? I don’t think anybody has done a better job doing a biopic than he has.

And maybe he had the upper hand cuz it’s his uncle and he looks a little bit like, but when you watch it, he actually looks a lot like his father. Many actors who play iconic figures struggle to escape the role. Daniel Radcliffe will always be Harry Potter. Robert Downey Jr. will always be Iron Man. Jaffer is taking a different path.

By choosing Supermax, he’s showing he’s versatile. Yesterday it was announced that Jafar Jackson um who we know played Michael Jackson in the Michael biopic. He is Michael Jackson’s ne nephew uh has a new role that he will be joining. So he’s going to be alongside Will Smith in the action thriller Supermax. Supermax is more than a movie.

It’s a statement. No singing, no dancing, no Jackson family connection. It’s a complete departure for Michael. Entertainment Weekly called it his first post Michael role. Will Hollywood see him as a onenote actor or a versatile star? Will Smith personally texted Jaffer to offer him the role? Smith said, “You are the truth.

This isn’t just a casting, it’s an endorsement. Smith is a global superstar.” His stamp of approval signals that Hollywood’s A-list has accepted Jaffer. The sequel has to match the first film success. The first film crossed $1 billion. It became the highest grossing biopic in history. The studio expects similar numbers from the sequel.

Anything less will be seen as a failure. Jaffer is the face of the franchise. I’m very proud. Don’t let nobody tell you different. And I’m glad they chose a family member. Yes. Yes. To get all the haters. If any family members hate you, let me see. You on top, baby. Thank you. Billion dollars at the global box office.

The highest grossing biopic in history. And a performance from Jaffer Jackson that critics called electric, dazzling, and Oscar worthy. But the sequel has to match that success. And the challenges are significant. The legal restrictions that forced re-shoots on the first film still apply. The budget is undetermined. The director hasn’t been confirmed and the allegations question remains unresolved.

The question is simple. Can Michael 2 live up to the original? The sequel has to tell a story that feels fresh while honoring the first film. Director Antoine Fugqua has said he wants to return, but Lionsgate hasn’t confirmed his involvement. Without Fugqua, the creative direction could shift, and with 25 to 30% of the film already shot, the creative team has to work around pre-existing footage.

I’ll be following every details about the sequel and the entire biopic updates. If you like stories like this, drop a comment below and subscribe to the channel. [bell]
